Yes, that was the Odysseus year end function, which I won’t go into
detail, this is covered later in the bulletin, but what a blast to end the
year off, and here I must thank all those who assisted in any way,
from buying tickets for the raffle to just being there, you made it
happen. BUT---this all would not have been possible had it not been
left in the Capable hands of Anne Bareham who did a sterling job of
organising the whole event, and by all accounts a resounding success
- A big thank you.
I wish you all a safe and peaceful holiday season and may you all be
blessed for all your contributions that has made the Motorcycle club
Odysseus the great club it is.
God bless---and-- “Remember the
reason for the Season”

High Beams During Rides
Remember to use your low beams during
our rides, not your high beams. You
are blinding the rider who is only a few
metres in front of you through his
rear view mirrors. Be considerate and
ensure your headlamp is on low beam
and aimed properly.

a caravan and single beds in the dorm.

The Night arrived at last after 6 months of planning… we
were all set to go… and WOW you all made a huge effort
to dress the part…? It was fantastic to see all the “ball gowns” come of the
closet! THANK YOU ALL so much for taking the time a trouble to do so, and
I am glad to say it seems that everyone had a really good time.
Thank you to Peter G for the great unstoppable music and to all who helped
me on the day, and over the past few months.
Thank you as well to all the sponsors and to all the members who gave
gifts for the lucky draw.
The photo Booth was a great hit , thanks to Justine, and all the pictures
taken will be sent to you by email after the 20th. I will also bring the
pictures to the January meeting as well. Between the raffle and the
Photo Booth we raised R1350:00 for Charity.
Thank you once again, and I wish you all a Happy and Safe Festive
Season.

Report Back.. Odysseus Club Ride
To De Kelder, Somerset West on 10 November
It was a shame really; we were leading the ride and the
venue was in Somerset West, but I still had to get up early. But,
hey! The weather looked good and at least we would have an
easy run home.
It was good to see quite a few bikes and people already waiting at
N1 City, and in no time at all we were on our way. Steve Collinson, who had only rocked up on his bike for a social visit,
even decided to join us when he heard the route, always a pleasure to ride!
No time to waste, the ride would be quite a long and scenic route over 3 passes, so we got a move
onto the N1 without delay. Then it was off the freeway at Klapmuts and a
pleasant winding ride past iconic wine estates such as Backsberg and
Rupert & Rothschild, before turning onto the R45 to Franschhoek.
Passing lots of crowds in Franschhoek, we were soon on the Pass and the
interesting part of the journey, where those that wish to, can test their
skills and reflexes. Too soon, we were at the pitstop on the Theewaterskloof bridge, but no-one
doing wheelies, only responsible riders out today!
The route continues through beautiful countryside, especially at this time
of year, so lush and green. Time was pressing, so no time to waste as we
hurried on towards the N2 and over Sir Lowry’s Pass. It was only a few
kms further on, to our destination at the Vodacom Golf Village near Somerset Mall, a new
venue for many people.
A warm welcome was waiting for us; tables
set outside and live music contributing to a
festive atmosphere. Most people opted for the
set breakfast to save time, which was
promptly served and good value.
We lingered until most people had gone, and then invited by John and
Kathy, who live in Gordon’s Bay, we went off for
an early supper at Harbour Island. For a couple of
hours we relaxed with the view and the vibe, and
a few glasses of wine, and eventually it was time
to go home, not too far for us this time. I know I
had a great time, think I dozed through the MNet
movie!
Another great day out, a good crowd of 31 people, including visitors, on 22 bikes.

The Toy Run 2013
End of November on the motorbiking calendar means one thing; the annual Toy Run to
Maynardville.
Fellow Odysseans would meet as
usual, at N1 City, for a ride to the
breakfast venue, Verdi’s in
Edgemead, thereafter to Canal
Walk for the
mass ride.
Not being keen to get involved in that part of the day, we opted instead to do our own thing. After
putting out details of our alternative ride to the event, we would have to wait and see who wanted
to join us. When we rode up to the meeting point, False Bay 1-Stop on the N2, we were
pleasantly surprised to see a few riders and pillions already waiting, including the Searle’s,
Abrahams, Trollope’s and Makepeace’s. Promptly at 9h00 we set off.
The route was simple, turning off the N2 at Baden Powell Drive and following the coast road
through
Muizenberg
before
reaching our breakfast venue,
Dixies in Glencairn. The weather
was perfect, the ride easy and
uneventful and we were at our
destinationbefore 10h00, where
we
were
joined
by
the
Thompsett’s, making 13 of us in
total.
Breakfast was the usual fare, with coffee and juice in place of
the drinks that the new liquor laws
no longer allow us to enjoy before
11h00. However, everyone enjoyed
the spectacular view.

2013 Toy Run Report Back Cont:
Off we went…..Rob and Julie then
led us on the final leg of the ride, taking us
over Ou Kaapse Weg and through Constantia
to the venue at Maynardville. There was already a big crowd there, as we fought our way
through.
We
eventually found
a few fellow club
members,
and
grabbed a table,
thankfully with an
umbrella
for
shade from the
fierce sun.
The new liquor laws kept everyone in the fenced-off pub
area, unfortunately out of range of the good music being
played. We all enjoyed a couple of hours of ‘meet-and
greet’ with old friends, but
before long, the place was
almost empty. Time to
leave, and only 14h00!
What a disappointment,
the liquor law restrictions
put a serious dampener
on the festivities and the
party ended too early.
As we left, stallholders
were complaining; the situation whereby people could not
browse and have a beer at the same time, had a very negative impact on their business.
All in all, good to do our bit for charity, but the high spirits of
yesteryear were gone, so we won’t be going next year.
Shame on you, municipality, it was supposed to be about the
spirit of giving and you
put silly regulations in the
way!

Keith’s Comments... on The Beaver Rally 2013
The annual Beaver Rally organized by IMOC was held near Montagu at Doringlaagte.
The site is superb with chalets and a grassed camping site surrounding a lake, a swimming pool, ablutions and a pub.
We remarked, later on, over tea and scones that it would make a good venue for our Rally should we ever
resurrect one.
Every Beaver I go along with Jeremy Salt and his friend Rohan from Hermanus and we invariably tag
along with one or two reprobates from Odysseus. This year Franz joined us and we felt as though we had been
transported back into WWII with his modified Honda Pan European. [Wrex yours never looked like this!]. It is quite a
strange looking bike but goes pretty well and became a talking point along the route when we stopped for refreshments.
After a circuitous route via the N2, Swellendam and Barrydale – with the obligatory meal at the Country Pumpkin, - we
arrived at the venue. The 1 km or so on gravel posed no problems, even for the road
bikes, although the road skirts the lake edge quite
closely at one point, so a momentary lapse of
concentration could result in a wet bike and a soggy
ego.
We pitched our tents on the lush grass, generously
imparting unwanted and unheeded advice and
wisdom to one another, in the spirit of helping them
get finished. I was quite smug as I had brought

our food or face eating it raw. The grid remained virginal however as we discovered
that for the consideration of R20.00 the organizers would cook it for us and throw in a
salad. This seemed like a good deal – and it was.
We all settled into the lapa at kick-off time to watch the Boks face the murky Welsh in a tense match which we won, but
not convincingly. But “a win is a win ou Pel!”
During the half time period one of the crowd was frustrated at the lack of a strip show and decided to get into the swing of
things. The results of this exhibitionism can be seen on the accompanying
photograph – not a pretty sight,
Over the course of the evening we bumped into Devin and Hans and Valana
keeping up the good name of Odysseus.
After the rugby the band took over and was reasonably entertaining, but as we
were tired we went to bed fairly early. Despite it being November and quite hot
during the day it was bloody cold that night. To add to my woes my mattress
developed a leak and I woke up on a deflated bed, luckily the grass was soft and so
it was not too uncomfortable.
The other thing that I enjoy about the Beaver is the lack of mouth-breathing morons
revving the guts out of their motorbikes, so the prospect of a peaceful night is
guaranteed. However there is little to be done about the snoring and

snorting from nearby tents, except to do like Lazarus and take up thy bed
and walk a bit further away.
Keith Reeves
And below apropos absolutely nothing is the answer to a question which has been vexing men and women for
many years!
Why is 'beaver' slang for a woman's private area?
I believe you may be requiring a serious and correct answer to your question. so here
in the 17th - late 19th century women were wont to depilate their vaginal regions for both fashionable and health
reasons, however for comfort purposes (using the equipment of the day) it was found that some form of covering
was required to avoid irritation .. the remedial object was known as a 'merkin' (you'll find this is described as a
female or pubic wig in complete dictionaries) .. these were fashioned from fine beaver pelts .. hence the modern
idiom .. her 'beaver', which, correctly, should only apply to the hirsute appendages of the vaginal region

Help Please... Old Ice Cream Cartons
Message from Helen Wrankmore
Helen is involved with a Charity who uses empty the Ice Cream cartons
to give to young girls with a few toiletries inside after trauma counselling for rape and other traumas. Helen ask if everyone could please
keep your old ice cream cartons with lids (which most of us will use at
sometime over this Christmas
period) and bring them into
the January meeting. Helen
will send me more details for
our next

Thanks to all.
