THE ITINERARY

THE ITINERARY
South Africa is often described as
"a whole world in one country" due to its
dramatic diversity of landscapes,
cultures, and wildlife. If you have never
experienced this ‘cradle of civilisation’
then you have not truly lived. My wife
Carol and I have travelled to many parts of
the world but after regularly visiting South
Africa since 1989 we decided 14 years
ago to buy a house in Simonstown, which
is 25 miles south of Cape Town and now
spend half of each year in this fantastic
country.
THE ITINERARY
(May be subject to minor changes)
So why not join Carol, myself and 36 others for an uplifting and memorable experience on the
Yorkshire Geriatrics Car Club - South Africa Tour 2016. The 22 day tour starts in Durban on
South Africa’s east coast on 1st April 2016 and finishes in Cape Town for 4 nights, voted in 2014
by the New York Times ‘one of the top 52 places to go’, the Telegraph ‘Best city to visit’ and ‘one
of the best 15 places to visit’ by Conde Nast Traveller on 23rd April 2016.
In the previous 18 days you will drive approx. 2100 miles (only 10 days driving + 2 optional with
only 3 days of over 200 miles) through the rural areas of Kwa-Zulu Natal, the mountains of
Lethoso, the Natal Battlefields, the Golden Gate National Park, the diamond centre of Kimberley (just for the ladies), a crossing of the massive Karoo semi-desert, the historical splendour of the
Eastern Cape, the excitement of the ‘top’ game reserve in South Africa, the Garden Route coast,
the Klein Karoo, the wine lands of the Western Cape and finally Cape Town & its environs.
WEBSITE ADDRESSES AND VIDEO CLIPS: So you sample what the tour offers a selection of
websites and video clips that will show you ‘SOUTH AFRICA’ its culture, history, fantastic
scenery, food & wine. Just ‘click on’ the HOTEL website address in BLUE. HOTEL videos in
BROWN & TOURISM video’s and websites in GREEN. The video clips are only a generalisation
and are not all are necessarily the same as will be supplied on the tour.
To whet your appetite take a look at this:INTRODUCTORY TOURISM VIDEO (17 mins) : www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q759uUg1xFY
(NOTE: On the tour we are only visiting five provinces Kwa-Zulu Natal, the Free State, Northern, Eastern & Western Cape and not everywhere
mentioned or seasonal descriptions will be relevant.)

YOUR ACCOMODATION:
The best hotels have been chosen where possible but in the more rural areas there are very few
that can accommodate a group of 40 people so three of the hotels will be only 3 stars rating as
that is all that is available. The accommodation selected is from my personal experience and that
of many South African’s that know the country even better than me. Each hotel rating and
website address is listed so you can do your own internet investigations as to what is being
provided to see if it meets your satisfaction.

The tour’s final day.(unless you decide to stay longer) Those who have brought their cars will
take them in the morning to the docks for shipping home or those who have hired a car can
return them. Nearly all flights to Europe leave late afternoon or evening, so enjoy your last few
hours in Cape Town. You will need a taxi from the hotel to the airport (approx.) ZAR 240.
CAR OPTIONS
BRINGING YOUR OWN VEHICLE:
As a memory there cannot be a better way to enjoy the tour than in your own treasured
possession but it does come at a cost. Current shipping cost is approx. £ 3000.00 per car return
subject to two cars per 40’ container. I will assist in the arrangements for shipping, customs and
docks handling. The cars will need to be delivered to and collected from the London Gateway
terminal which is situated in the Thames Estuary near Tilbury.
Unfortunately South Africa does not have any ‘get you home’ breakdown insurance schemes like
the UK so in the event of a breakdown of your vehicle we will attempt to get it to the nearest town
for repair. If the repair cannot be undertaken in suitable time or is un-repairable the vehicle will
need to be repatriated to Cape Town for return shipping to the UK. The cost of transport will be
the liability of the owner.
Those who wish to bring their own cars please contact me for more detailed information as there
are various options. The decision on bringing your own car does not need to be made until
September/October. What is important you decided by 30th June if you wish to do the tour or not.
11
MOTOR INSURANCE:
It is not possible to obtain insurance on a foreign registered car in South Africa so you will have to
make arrangements with your own insurers for the necessary cover.
HIRE A CAR:
I have investigated the availability of convertibles/sports cars for rental but there are none
available for collection Durban and drop off Cape Town.
So the only option is something like the standard issue hire car ‘Toyota Corolla’ (about £ 600 for
the tour duration) but it is a bit underpowered for such a long journey especially when you need
to pass a 25m/80ft double artic lorry. I would recommend you consider an SUV - Hyundai iX35/
Nissan Qashqai/ Nissan X-Trail or similar which will give you far better visibility to see the
countryside and animals !!!. (about £1000 for the same period). However if you are thinking of
driving ‘4 up’ a Toyota Fortuner would be preferable (about £ 1200). Although the SA roads are
better than the UK you may come across for the occasional pothole but they are normally
marked.
You will need to make your own arrangements with one of the many hire companies but try
www.car-rental.co.za who appear to be able to get good deals from hire companies. However you
will need to book early as the supply of these type of vehicles is limited.
Driver's licences: Your UK driving licence, provided it bears your photograph and signature is
acceptable. Some vehicle hire companies may also require an international driver's licence. It is
worth confirming requirements with the vehicle hire company when making your booking. This
holds for additional drivers as well, who must be identified when you hire your vehicle.
Remember to carry all your documentation with you when you travel as traffic officers will expect
to see it if they stop you for any reason.
WEATHER:
April is most probably one of the best times to visit South Africa, when the mass of international
tourists have gone home and the high temperatures have cooled off slightly. The daytimes will be
pleasantly warm usually around 23 degs C and evening temperatures should 15 degrees except
in the higher mountain areas where lower temperatures may be encountered. You will also enjoy
the fantastic change of colour of the trees and the roads will be clear of traffic making it a driver’s
paradise.

PRICING OF TOUR & PAYMENT TERMS:
1) RESERVATION.
The tour is limited to 20 cars (40 persons) but that is also the minimum number to maintain the
low price of the tour. Entries are on the first come, first served basis so if you wish to join the
tour say so NOW and I will send you an entry form. When the 20 car places are filled any further
applications will be placed on a reserve list in date received order so in case of withdrawal by one
of the original entrants for valid reasons the place can be filled. If however less than 20 cars wish
to do the tour it may be possible to organise for a lower number but obviously the price will
increase.
Due to reservation requirements by the hotels the final closing date for entries is 30th June 2015.
2) STAGE PAYMENTS.
As the tour is organised on a non-profit basis, the TOTAL sterling price to be paid will be
calculated on the £-Rand exchange rate at 13th April 2015.
An initial deposit of ZAR 10000 per person will be required to reserve your place which is
£ 581.00 per person (R17.21/£1.) at 13th April 2015.
No places are reserved until the deposit is paid.
Dependant on the £-Rand fluctuation it may be necessary to re-calculate the sterling figure. This
could be UPWARDS - i.e. weakening Pound to Rand therefore costing more or DOWNWARDS
i.e. strengthening Pound to Rand therefore costing less when the remaining 2 stage payments
are due on
1.9.2015
ZAR 25000
approx. £ 1452.00 per person ,
1.1.2016
ZAR 15750
approx. £ 915.00 ( per person).
13
With the rand being such a volatile currency obviously it is impossible to calculate the exchange
rate 12 month in advance and by using this method you only pay for what the tour costs rather
than having to increase the overall charge initially to allow for the currency fluctuations.
How to pay: UK Entrants:
BY CHEQUE: Although I can accept cheques until November 2015, I am then away until April
2016 so I cannot handle the December payment if it is sent to me by post. Please therefore send
the December payment direct to Barclays Bank, Parliament Street, York YO1 8SE to the credit
of A.W Raylor, Acc No 53250768
.
BY EFT: Barclays Account Name: A.W Raylor, Sort Code: 20-99-56 Acc No: 53250768
How to pay: South African Entrants:
BY EFT: First National Bank, Fish Hoek: Account Name: Anthony W Raylor, Sort Code: 202309

CANCELLATION / WITHDRAWL / INSURANCE
Should you have to withdraw at any time you will lose the payments you have made unless the
places reserved by you are taken up by another entrant on the reserve list in which case you will
receive a full or part refund dependant on charges raised by the hotels on us.
You should take out cancellation insurance for this purpose.
