Girl Rescued from Cycle of Prostitution
India, [undisclosed city] - December 8th, 2012 – Rahab's Rope recently rescued yet another young girl
from the clutches of prostitution and abuse.
Until she was recently rescued, 3 ½ year old Leena (name changed)has lived in an impoverished home
in a red light district of India. Since before Leena was born, her mother has supported her family as a
commercial sex worker; however, her mother's occupation as a CSW has put Leena in a dangerous
place.
Current statistics concerning lower class Indian families show that prostitution is frequently being
passed down from mothers to daughters.
According to Half the Sky, a notable film detailing global sex trafficking, “Ninety percent of sex
workers’ daughters in India follow their mothers into prostitution.” Without intervention into her
situation Leena would have likely followed her mother into prostitution.
Upon discovering Leena's situation, Rahab's Rope staff promptly rescued and placed her in a safe
home, away from the abuse and threat of being prostituted that she has faced. And although saddened
to see her daughter go, Leena's mother has been supportive. When initially asked about her daughter
through a translator, her mother remarked: “Please. Take her [my daughter] somewhere, I don't want
her to end up with the life that I have."
In her new home Leena will have the opportunity to build a promising future and the means to rise
above the vicious cycle of prostitution in India in which her mother is trapped. This home primarily
focuses on education and safety for its girls, is centered around christian values, and is run like a
family, with two couples in charge of all operations.
Leena's rescue represents a step closer to solving the giant problem of India's prostitution cycle. We
feel every success in fighting prostitution in India is worthy of celebration.
