Excellence in aluminum
EDAK is a globally active company and leading manufacturer of Aluminum
Transit Cases. EDAK is certified to ISO 9001:2008, with a global sales
network. EDAK Inc. is located in Melbourne, Florida near Cape Canaveral,
and was founded in 1986.
With a well-trained and highly productive staff, EDAK designs and
manufactures transit and transport cases exclusively in aluminum. All
EDAK aluminum cases are engineered to withstand the severity of field
operations, military, and commercial transport usage. We design and
manufacture both standard and nonstandard aluminum transit cases for
rack and flange-mount electronic equipment needing protection from a
variety of elements, such as shock, vibration, water, dust, etc. EDAK also
fabricates cases for general transport purposes.
We manufacture all cases to your exact specifications, irrespective of lot
size. Since we use an aluminum sheet shell process, we are not restrained
by sizing limitations inherent in plastic molds. This advantage is utilized
across all EDAK case lines. With EDAK, you will never have to make
compromises with case size, and you can achieve the smallest possible
footprint with the highest level of protection.
With the EDAK range of transport cases, we cover all needs for the safe
transport and storage of your valuable goods.

MILEX
EMI (RFI) Protection
Because the MILEX cases and enclosures are made of aluminum as opposed to a
non-conducting material such as plastic, composite or wood, it can be
constructed to screen the electronics in the housing against the effects of EMI
and RFI with the installation of some special features.
EMI Gasket:
 Electrically conductive gasket is installed in
the housing to provide electrical contact
between covers and housing. This gasket
also provides weather protection when
covers are mounted.
Conductive Skirt Seal:
 To eliminate the risk of water or dust
contaminating the interior of the case when
the covers are removed, a flexible seal
between the support frame and the housing
can be fitted. The flexible seal does not
affect the anti-vibration characteristics of the
case. Sealing of the space between the
housing and frame results in IP65protection.
The skirt seal is electrically conductive.
RFI Frame:
 A special RFI tight frame manufactured of
aluminum that is Chromate Conversion
(Alodine, Irridite) treated. Electronics in the
case are thereby screened against RFI. In
order to dissipate heat produced by the electronics, the walls of the frame have |3 mm
(0.11“) holes; average distance between
holes is 4 mm (0.15“).

MILEX
19” Wire Rope Rack Mount Case - For Extreme Applications
The MILEX-WR is a 19“ case with the frame
mounted on stainless steel, spiral-wound,
wire rope shock absorbers. It is used where
electronics have to be protected from
vibration and particularly severe shock
impact, where a deflection is required
exceeding that offered by the shock absorbers
in the standard MILEX case.
Typical applications are shock protection on
ships, submarines, helicopters and aircraft.
The MILEX-WR is available in all standard
depths and has an overall width of 29.45
inches. Payload is 100 to 154 pounds.
The MILEX-WR case has been tested to:
• MIL-167-1 for marine applications
• MIL-STD-810F 514.5 C3
• IP65 dust and moisture protection
• MIL-S-901 test in preparation

INTRODUCTION
THERMAL CONTROL ISSUES
The performance limits of conventional cooling techniques are being reached in commercial and
military electronics, industrial and medical devices, and electro-optical systems. The thermal
engineering challenge is:
 Add or remove thermal energy from an EDAK MILEX 19” Rack Case in high reliability applications.
 Maintain critical device temperatures at appropriate manufacturers’ recommended levels.
 Handle increasingly peak high heat densities (cooling) of electronics.
 Safe Warm heat application in cold weather environments so that system warms to operational
levels quickly (heating).
 Effectively thermally control electronics in an EDAK MILEX 19” Rack Case despite the external
environmental extremes.
 Do all of this with available electrical power.
SOLUTIONS
EDAK’s approach is to focus on heat management while providing the best thermal solution. EDAK’s
KOOLEX products range from the low end of complexity with fans and onto the high end with active
vapor cycle air conditioning and liquid cooling systems. Depending on the heating or cooling
requirements, availability and type of electrical power available, EDAK will help assist you find the
best system for the your application.
INTEGRATION
Transit case mounted electronic systems can be compromised during temperature extremes.
EDAK developed the KOOLEX product line to address this application with its EDAK MILEX Case.
MILEX cases are built to be used in mobile environments that the US Military requires to support
the Warfighter. KOOLEX systems are customized to enhance the performance allowing electronic
systems to operate with MILEX Cases.
RATINGS
KOOLEX ratings are based on the effective capacity of the KOOLEX unit to generate or dissipate heat
for rack mounted electronics in EDAK transit cases. Ratings are developed from worse-case testing in
accordance with EDAK Engineering Standards.
Our specifications focus on worst case testing using simulators that represent rack mounted
electronics. When configuring a new system, be aware that the practical application of thermal
control systems will vary depending on the ambient conditions, arrangement of payload, solar load
and many other factors. It is all about the efficiency of the complete system including the electronics
(payload). Our specifications show the Design Capacity and the Measured Capability. The Measured
Capability is the performance of a specific system using electronics simulators, applied to a specific
EDAK MILEX Case using the EDAK In-House Test Plan.

HEAT EXCHANGERS
The KOOLEX passive Cover Heat Exchanger
operates with two forced air circulation
loops that are not connected thereby
allowing sealed operation.
This system cycles air into the CHE where it
passes over fins in the passage reducing the
temperature of the fins which removes the heat.
On the inside loop, the air in the case is brought
into the CHE raising the temperature of the fins.
The heat is passed from the inside loop to the
outer loop via the fins (passive connection). The
heat dissipation capability depends on the
position of the case (stand alone, positioned
against wall, stacked). It works most effectively
when there is a temperature differential
between the inside and outside of at least 20°C.

Q: What is the difference between the KOOLEX Falcon and KOOLEX Yankee/All-Terrain
and Freedom/Multi-User transit case ECU product line?
A: The Falcon will not meet some of the severe US military MIL-STD-810
environmental vibration requirements that the KOOLEX Yankee/All-Terrain and Freedom/MultiUser ECUs will meet; however, the KOOLEX Falcon incorporates many of the features
(though not as robust) such as EMI shielded wiring, rain and dust proof fans, and microprocessor control.
Q: Are “Cooling Only” KOOLEX Falcon units available?
A: Yes, “Cooling-Only” KOOLEX Falcon units are also available.
Q: Why does the KOOLEX Falcon need an optional 1U tray or Face-Mounted AC-DC power
converter to operate on 85-270VAC electrical power?
A: An AC-DC power converter is needed because the KOOLEX Falcon operates internally
on 28VDC electrical power.
Q: What is the purpose of the KOOLEX Falcon's Return Air Temperature Selector?
A: The temperature selected is the heated air temperature in which the KOOLEX Falcon’s
cooling system turns ON.
Q: What prevents the KOOLEX Falcon from switching ON its cooling and heating system
at the same time?
A: The KOOLEX Falcon’s software has a neutral temperature range between the heating
and cooling system of approximately 16°C (25°F) whereby neither system will operate.
Note that the KOOLEX Falcon internal fans will remain on and continue to circulate air
while the air temperature remains within the neutral temperature range.
