The music you are listening to represents a musical odyssey that began more than
twenty years ago. Always attracted to music that was from locales I someday wanted
to visit, it was a natural that the beautiful melodies and lyrics of Antonio Carlos Jobim
would have such impact on a young singer! In those days Agua de Beber was one of
the first Brazilian standards I learned, as was Aguas de Marco and both songs remain
favorites to this day. I love that you are hearing it half in English and half in Portugese
- beautifully interpreted by Pepe.
I recall being a student at the Jazz Workshop in Banff and being introduced to the
great Brazilian singer, Elis Regina. I had heard her before but did not truly understand
her impact until I began learning songs like Corrida de Jangada (about a sailing race)
and the hauntingly mournful Romaria (about a pilgrimage). I owe a large part of my
‘learning curve’ to the band members of Fantazea, a Vancouver-based Brazilian ensemble and, while they have certainly morphed into this band’s
present arrangements, Gema (written by the brilliant Caetano Veloso) and Sonho Meu are songs I learned while performing with this group. Both I
cultivated from the recordings of Maria Bethania.
One of the greatest experiences of my life so far has been as a member of Ed Johnson & Novo Tempo - a Bay-area 8 piece ensemble with whom
I’ve had the pleasure to record three CDs. All the members of that group share a passion for this wonderful music - A Felicidade, plus Ivan Lins’
compositions Meu Pais (My Country) & Lua Soberana (Moon Sovereign). Ed loaned us these beautiful arrangements of his - I thank him for introducing us to Ivan Lins’ music - Rene and I are smitten!
Finally, Loro by Egberto Gismonti is a duet with my husband Rene Worst - what a year we’ve had! - and it seems fitting that we included this
song that we fell in love playing together. Full circle for me was writing our closing piece, Voce es Com Deus for my sister Carolyn who we lost so
suddenly in February 2011. This song, this CD is for her. I hope you enjoy listening to these remarkable musicians: Cory, Bill, Pepe, Rene & Nino gentlemen, you have helped me bring together something that can only be described by me as ....Sonho Meu - my dream.
