15-2 Summer - Flagler Beach Historical Museum
Flagler Beach Historical Museum “From the Stone Age... to the Space Age” Summer 2015 5 a Volume 15 - Edition 2 s 5 What’s New at the Museum Meet Phyllis Sweeney and her Tin Lizzie! T h e y came out to kick off the 90th Flagler Beach Birthday Bash on 4-11-15. Photo by Bret Howard This Summer thru September, Celebrate the 60's with Flagler Beach Museum! TE! Saturday 9-19-15 Attendees arriving at the museum for a free Downtown Historic Walking Tour admired the 1911 Model T “Torpedo Runabout” which sported a clever birthday card (L). Many visitors enjoyed talking with Phyllis and her husband Bob, about Lizzie, history, and the Museum. Meanwhile, Museum staff and local restaurants were prepping for their 2nd Annual Food & Wine Tasting, “Cheer at the Pier!” The afternoon was tasty, toasty, breezy, tuneful and successful due to the work and donations of so many people, especially Co-Chair Kim Carney and new Museum Event Coordinator Denise Collins (photo below, story page 7). See pages 2 and 3 for our “thank yous” to Pier Cheer sponsors, restaurants, and friends. Celebrating resumed this month at the Flagler Beach Fabulous 4th! The Museum’s patriotic themed cars and marchers won a 1st place trophy for “Best Stars & Stripes Theme” in the annual Flagler Beach parade. Leading off was Phyllis driving Lizzie accompanied by her sister Ginger Hutchins. Next up cruised brother Al Lindsey with wife Debbie, in his 1961 Corvette, the perfect lead-in to the Museum’s patriotic hippies carrying “Gala A Go Go” signs inviting everyone to “Groove Thru the 60s” with us at our 9-19-15 costume fundraiser. Late last month, Scott Fais called us from Channel 13 to say he was working on a new series about Florida Piers. We happily offered info about our iconic Flagler Beach landmark, AND offered tips about local shops and restaurants within walking distance, as requested. (Note: Where can’t you walk to in laid-back charming Flagler Beach, right?) Scott arrived, guided by our Tourism Associate Amy Lukasik. He visited the pier’s (and Museum’s!) Surf 97.3 closet-sized radio station (photo below) and interviewed city staffer Rodney Harshbarger (photo bottom right). While at the pier, unfortunate but much-needed afternoon rains arrived. A short trot to the museum allowed Scott to protect his recording equipment and talk to Tourism Liaison Karen Young. Later Scott phoned us “thanks” and said he knew one thing for sure: That he would be back! To see the “Tankful” clip, click on the Visit Flagler button at flaglerbeachmuseum.com Cheer at the Pier Special thanks to the “Weather Committee” for holding off the rain until after our 2nd Annual Cheer at the Pier & City Birthday Bash on April 11th. With kites soaring overhead, over 400 guests sipped and sampled tasty treats. Cooling breezes, panoramic seaside views, and toe-tapping tunes added up to a delightful way to enjoy the pier. We couldn’t have done it without our fantastic volunteers who deserve this “group hug” for making the day a success...along with our guests! ~Director Teri Pruden Dan Bayerl Dennis Beauchamp Lindsay Birch Michelle Brown Mary Calkins Kim Carney Mary Ann Clark Thomas Cleary Bill Clemence Bill Colby Denise Collins Mary Craig Rob Creal Cindy Dalecki Dick & LJ Dunham Father Al Esposito Paul Eik John & Kathy Feind Jeff Fisher L-Jo, Liz, & Mr. Jones Shirlee Lepson Marty Lewis Lisa McDevitt Nate McLaughlin Jane Mealy Cindy Miller Kelly Miller Beth Mount Sue Norton Kelli O’Reilly Mayor Linda P! He asked how he should respond if anyone inquired if there would be any comparative studies between him and his brother, noting that he will have flown about 540 days, compared to Mark’s 54 days. That sparked the interest of staff at NASA’s Human Research Program (HRP) who realized that conducting a study of astronaut twins was indeed a rare opportunity and jumped at the chance to join with the National Space Biomedical Research Institute to ask potential researchers for investigation proposals. The Twins Study will include ten separate research investigations in the areas of Human Physiology (effects of spaceflight environment on human organs), Behavioral Health (effects on perception, reasoning, decision making, and alertness), Microbiology/Microbiome (dietary differences and stressors and their effect on organisms in the GI tract), and Molecular/Omics (how genes in cells are turned on and off as a result of spaceflight, how stressors like radiation, confinement and microgravity prompt changes in proteins and me- See next page for more about the Museum’s newest Gift Shop tabolites gathered in body fluid samples). Even some of the more mature volunteers & staff have been seen wearing the Glow Glasses on fun holiday occasions!) Denise is a self-proclaimed “avid history enthusiast” who appreciates the Museum’s mission of preserving the history of our beach community and educating residents and visitors. In fact, Denise is a professional educator having taught third grade at Imagine School in Town Center for three years and currently home schools a small group of local children ranging from second to fifth grade. Denise’s enthusiasm for education will enhance the value she brings to her responsibilities in this new position. The ‘teacher’ in her would like to increase involvement at the Museum by young people, and sees the museum as a “place where our local youth can come to learn about where they live and be inspired to get involved in preserving and sharing the history”. Denise’s duties as Fundraising and Special Events Coordinator will include organizing events including the Museum’s annual gala, with the assistance of our hard-working Gala Committee, valued members, volunteers, and community partners. Her organizational and communication skills honed in the classroom and developed during her earlier 10-year career as a flight attendant with Delta Airlines, and previous event-planning experience, will be invaluable to making our events successful. Denise is excited to be a part of the Flagler Beach Historical Museum team and feels “there is an energy here that is positively contagious! Everyone loves what they do and wants wholeheartedly to see this museum flourish.” With that type of enthusiasm, Denise is sure to contribute greatly to our Museum’s success! ~Virginia Giaramita In the Next Newsletter! == New Gift Shop / Book Shelf for All Ages == Meet Virginia Giaramita The Flagler Beach Historical Museum thanks the County Commission and the F l a g l e r C o u n t y To u r i s t Development Council for their grant awards that help us fund operating expenses, promotion, and much more! See you in the autumn issue. 7 Photo by Ed Siarkowicz Photo by Bret Howard Photo by Ed Siarkowicz Photo by Ed Siarkowicz Many thanks to the wonderful friends who come out to our events and photograph our attendees and volunteers. Their help gains us many more photos of guests enjoying their participation, but -- it does make it difficult to identify individuals and caption each photo with their names. Facebook also has increased photo collection for us, but has made it more difficult than ever to give photographer credit in print as they have been posted and re-posted from near and far. We make every effort to use only photos we know the origins of, and in this issue, we especially want to thank Cindy Dalecki, Brett Howard, Linda Shaw Jones, and Doc Ed Siarkowicz. Ed’s photos often have a white runner with his Ed Shark Photography on the side or bottom. Museum Board Directors’ Cindy and Linda’s photos often go unattributed with their blessing. And our latest volunteer Brett Howard will be credited on his photos. You can find info on Brett at B&D Productions Photography. For corrections or missing attributions, call Teri at (386) 439-6262.
