Turning to the Future is a
A goal of the contest is to encourage students to pursue
further education and careers in woodworking and
manufacturing as the industry faces shortages of skilled
workers. In addition, it increases corporate awareness of
active woodworking education programs to potentially
foster industry-education partnerships.
The competition is open to North American high school
and post-secondary students in accredited art, design,
woodworking, or trade programs. Entry is open to all
techniques of woodturning: functional, sculptural, or
decorative, with the exception of furniture making.

of Woodworking & Furnishings Suppliers® (AWFS®) in 1999.
It is intended for serious woodworking students who are
anticipating a career in the wood and related industries.
Fresh Wood is open to students in North America. Students
must be in an accredited high school woodworking or
related program or in an accredited post-secondary
woodworking or related program and transitioning into a
career in woodworking or design.

Post-secondary schools include colleges and universities as
well as trade, art and union apprenticeship schools. There is
no entry fee.
High school and post secondary levels are judged separately
in six entry categories: Case Goods, Seating, Tables, Design
for Production, Special Theme: Musical Instruments and
Open. Entries are rated by a panel of judges that represent
different aspects of the industry such as design, education,
manufacturing and retail.
The winners are determined on-site and announced at the
Fresh Wood Awards Ceremony on Friday, July 24. Students
compete for First Place, Second Place, and Honorable
Mention with cash prizes in each category. AWFS® covers
shipping and the majority of costs to bring student finalists
and their teachers to the AWFS®Fair for the final round.

showcasing student woodturning.

student awards ceremony, Friday July 24,
4:00 p.m. at the AWFS®Fair Stage, booth
#5531 (FREE to all registered attendees and
exhibitors)!
Projects must be at least partially made with a lathe and
should be 20” or less in diameter. All forms of turning are
eligible, including traditional, multi-axis, segmented, and
rose engine/ornamental. Projects must have been built
between August 2013 and April 2015.
A distinguished panel of professional woodturners will act
as judges and cash prizes will be awarded for first, second
and third prize at both school levels, sponsored by Rikon
power tools. All winners will receive an AAW symposium
scholarship and have their work featured in the American
Woodturner journal. There is no entry fee.

2015 Fresh Wood Judges
Thank you to the following industry professionals for committing their time to the Fresh Wood competition as judges!
Bob Barone was the founder and president of an architectural millwork company in Buffalo, NY for eighteen years. In 1997, he moved
to North Carolina and worked for various woodworking machinery companies before accepting his present position as Northeast
Regional Sales Manager for Precision Drive Systems. Bob has been involved in AWI, WTCA, NWPCA and KCMA and is currently a
member of the AWFS®Fair Trade Show Committee. Bob’s love of music and wood has led him to build B² Lap Steel Guitars in his shop in
the Blue Ridge Mountains. He is also a professional musician and pedal steel guitar studio session player.
Martin Goebel is the Co-Founder and Creative Director of Goebel & Co. Furniture in St. Louis, a custom shop that melds traditional
craftsmanship with technology. Martin’s work has been nationally shown and he has received numerous write-ups in various
publications. He holds an MFA in Furniture Design from Rhode Island School of Design and a fine woodworking certificate from College
of the Redwoods, which he received under the tutelage of James Krenov. In 2014, Martin won the Young Woodworking Professional of
the Year sponsored by Vance Publishing.
Daniel Hellman co-founded Hellman-Chang, a high-end furniture design/build company, with lifelong friend Eric Chang. Founded
in Brooklyn, NY, in 2006, the company has won many awards for contemporary furniture designs. Their line is sold through trade-only
showrooms throughout the United States in all the major markets. Daniel heads up the operations of the company and manages the
multiple vendors that help the company offer its diverse product line.
Saúl Martín developed his passion for woodworking in high school and while earning his AA in Cabinetmaking at Los Angeles Trade Technical
College. He has been at Architectural Woodworking Company in Los Angeles, for over 20 years, where he serves as Shop Superintendent. His
commitment to see the woodworking industry thrive has led him into involvement with SkillsUSA at the local, state and national level. In
2014, he was recognized as Industry Person of the Year by the Los Angeles-area California Industrial and Technology Education Association
(LACITEA). He currently serves on the AWFS Education Committee and the Young Furniture Associates (YFA) Board of Directors.
Richard A Schroeder is a veteran of the furniture industry, designing case goods and youth furniture for 39 years. Rick is Vice
President of Design for Stanley Furniture Company, Inc. located in High Point, NC. He also serves as the current President for the
American Society of Furniture Designers (ASFD). Rick believes, “Design is a continuous process; perfection is never fully achieved but
in reaching for that goal, inspiring pieces are created.” Rick is a Pinnacle Award and HOME American Furniture Award recipient. He and
his wife Karen live in Jamestown, North Carolina and have 3 children and 2 grandchildren.
Davide Tonizzo of Design D is a Canadian-born industrial designer featured regularly in international design media. Designing
primarily for mass production, his diverse portfolio includes products in contract and bedroom furniture, public seating, upholstery,
home décor accessories and wood case goods. Davide is the recipient of the American Society of Furniture Designers Pinnacle Award
and the Good Design Award. He is also on the Industrial Design Faculty at the Ontario College of Art and Design University.

Paul Schürch owns and operates Schürch Woodwork (Santa Barbara, CA) specializing in marquetry
and custom furniture. He has been a practitioner of veneer work and marquetry since 1974 and
completed apprenticeships of Church Organ Building in Switzerland and Boat Building in England. Paul
has written several books and produced videos on veneer, marquetry and furniture building. He acts as
a consultant to production and specialty shops and teaches at schools across the country.

The Fresh Wood Best of Show award is selected from the group of first-place winners. The winner receives a 14”
Bandsaw from Rikon Power Tools, a sculptural award designed by renowned woodworking artist Paul Schürch and a
$1,000 cash prize.
