Racine Yacht Club Commodore’s Report
Racine, Wisconsin
S2 7.9 Class Championship Regatta
The summer surely has moved quickly. The most recent
notable event was Denali’s line honors on the Trans Superior
race. Congratulations to Rick Hennig and his crew on their
success. Dr. Tony Herrmann has taken the time to document
previous Line Honor finishes at the Racine Yacht Club.
There’s more details in his article, but it’s been 66 years since
the last RYC “first to finish” on a Great Lakes major race.
In local racing news, we just finished up whirlwind weeks
with the Racine Yacht Club Regatta. Bounded on both ends,
we hosted the CRAW regatta, Catalina 30 nationals, and the
Star’s 59th Mission Regatta. I don’t think this would have
been possible without the vision and hard work of the Race
Committee volunteers and the Samples. All did an
outstanding job and even took time out to plan perfect
weather.
Some other aspects of Regatta did were less than satisfactory.
Next year, we will return to the membership organizing some

of the food in the style of years gone by. We will improve.
Stay tuned for Blue Nose weekend and the Shrimp Boil. As
always, great food and terrific entertainment.

RYC 2013 Extended Cruise – A Great Success
The RYC fleet (Ultreya/Assuager/Pelican/More Mischief/Pot-OGold and Honey B) completed a 19-day, 550-mile, 13-port
cruise with very, very cooperative weather and no serious
problems. We departed RYC on Aug. 4 with four boats; two
boats, Honey B and Pot-O-Gold having gone out a couple days
earlier to visit additional Michigan harbors. We went to Port
Washington, then to Sheboygan. We crossed from Sheboygan
to Pentwater, Michigan on August 6, where we joined up
with our crews who had left Racine early. Now we were six
boats and we enjoyed two days in beautiful Pentwater before
moving north to Manistee. Sailing north from Manistee to
Frankfort (where Honey B departed for an early return and
Assuager was delayed for a steering system failure), Frankfort
to Leland, and Leland to Elk Rapids on the east side of Grand
Traverse Bay where we enjoyed three restful days.
Phones ミ General: (262) 634-8585
Our return route was Elk Rapids, then Leland, where
Assuager rejoined, Frankfort, where Pot-O-Gold and More
Mischief left one day early to insure better weather for the
westbound crossing, then Manistee and Ludington on the
Michigan side. Ultreya, Assuager and Pelican crossed from
Ludington to Sheboygan on August 20. We finished the
cruise from Sheboygan to Port Washington and home to
Racine, where we got nailed by the big thunderstorm off
Milwaukee on August 22. We thoroughly enjoyed the
company of good sailors, several cook-outs, numerous good
restaurant dinners, plus shopping and sights ashore in
various harbors. Although a fleet of six boats is somewhat
akin to herding turtles, we can handle even more if anyone
would like to join in next year.

Remembering Long-Time Member Cliff Hass
walkway from the Club to the pier and the
building of the new Clubhouse, to name
just a few. Also, let’s not forget,
Thanksgiving and Christmas morning
making Tom and Jerrys.
It is with sadness that I report that long
time Club member Cliff Haas has passed
away at the age of 88. He was married to
Charlotte Knop on February 18, 1950 and
together they raised two children, Bonne
Haas and Keith (and Jill) Haas. Cliff also
enjoyed his four grandchildren and two
great grandchildren.
Cliff and Charlotte joined the Racine Yacht
Club in 1961. Cliff served in several officer
and directors positions of the Club. Being a
CPA, Cliff was a huge asset when the Club
was having financial problems back in the
1960’s. He was deeply concerned for the
financial well being of the Club. Cliff was
also there to help at all of the work parties
for the Club’s improvements like the pier
expansion, the barge slip system, the
Cliff was a man of many skills and a very
hard worker. He was also a very
accomplished sailor. He raced every race
that was available from Wednesday night
Club races to the Chicago Mac race. He
raced them with his brother-in-law, and
best friend, Gary Knop aboard the Rouge,
Miramar, Kimosabe and the super yacht Uber
Alles. At the age of 13, I had the experience
of racing aboard the Uber Alles with Cliff,
Gary, Sherm Foertsch, Doc Skup, Cliff
Shadel, John Nielson, Todd Knop, Brian
Haley and Cliff’s son, Keith. I learned a lot
about what it takes to win, but I also
learned a lot about friendship and
camaraderie and the work ethic that you
must have to win. After racing we would
have some camaraderie and Cliff would
put on his German army helmet and do a
great Arte Johnson impersonation from
Rowan and Martin’s “Laugh-In.” Now,
you have to imagine Cliff with his German
army helmet on, a cigarette in his mouth
and a drink in his hand, and then saying
that funny saying, “Very interesting, but
stupid.” We would all get a good laugh.
Cliff had a quick wit and loved a good joke.
After Cliff’s racing days were done, he
moved into the race management position
where he and Romey Wilear, Tom
Haakenson, Don Fiehweg and Rich
Lennertz were inseparable. They were a
great team that ran the best racing around.
When I became the race director, I owned a
46’ race boat that I wanted to race, but I
couldn’t because I did not have enough
people to run the races. It was Cliff that
came out of retirement and said, “Rick go
race, I got you covered.” Another time I got
myself in some trouble with a high speed
chase and a number of people from the
Club wrote letters to the judge asking for
leniency and one of the letters was from
Cliff. He was always there for the RYC and
he was always there for me and anyone
that needed a helping hand.
In closing, I would like to add a passage
from the RYC’s 51st anniversary book:
“Our many thanks to all who have put forth an
effort to further the Racine Yacht Club in its
endeavors throughout the years. We are proud
to be a part of such an organization.” – Clifford
E. Haas, Editor
The membership was proud to have Cliff
Haas as a member and friend to all.
Until we meet again,
Rick Hennig
Denali Wins Line Honors
In the recent Trans Superior Race, Line
Honors were won by Denali and Rick
Hennig, its skipper-owner and crew of 13.
To our knowledge, the last time a boat
flying the burgee of Racine Yacht Club won
Line Honors for a major offshore race was
66 years ago in the 1947 Queen’s Cup Race
from Milwaukee to St. Joseph, Michigan.
The boat was Q 12 Spindle skippered by
Vitas Thomas. The only other known Line
Honors recognitions won in any major
offshore races by a Racine Yacht Club boat
in its 97 year history were in the 1939
Chicago Mackinac and in the 1940
Michigan City to Chicago/Jackson Park
races. It was again Q 12 then named
Gloriant at the time, owned and skippered
by Tony Herrmann Sr.
Line Honors is a very special and unique
event. It means that independent of any
rating system or handicap, you are the first
boat to finish. In all four of these instances,
these Line Honors were won against boats
in those fleets that were faster and bigger.
Rick and his crew were very satisfied with
their performance especially against the
newer and exotic Volvo 70 Il Mostro with its
canting keel, lee boards and twin rudders,
which was touted as the boat to beat in this
Trans Superior Race.
Congratulations, Rick, to you, your crew
and Denali. You all brought honor and fame
to your home yacht club.
