“Like some fantastic
dream from a tale of
the Arabian Nights.”
That is how William
McCardell described
the mist-filled cave
when he, his brother
Tom, and their partner Frank McCabe
first saw it in the fall

Central Message:
This is the birthplace of Canada’s National Parks
Themes:
Birthplace of Canada’s National Parks:
“Cave and Basin, the birthplace of Canada’s Parks, has a long history of
human habitation dating back some 10,000 years.”
From Sea to Sea to Sea:
“Today, the spirit of Cave and Basin is found across Canada in Parks
Canada’s system of protected areas.”
Reviving Body and Spirit:
“Canadians have a long tradition of using their protected places to
revive body and spirit. The rich bathing history of Cave and Basin
reflects this.”
Understanding and Protecting:
“Both the environment at Cave and Basin and its history are shaped by the water that flows from these hot springs.
Protecting and understanding special places such as this for current and future generations is Parks Canada’s mandate.”
Paul Legris
