Limited access to Discovery & Marsh boardwalks. Access through the National Historic Site to Sundance canyon and the marsh loop will be maintained, although there will be periodic disruptions to accommodate construction Questions: Steve Malins: National Historic Sites Manager Project Contact: Project Lead – Steve Malins [email protected] “Like some fantastic dream from a tale of the Arabian Nights.” That is how William McCardell described the mist-filled cave when he, his brother Tom, and their partner Frank McCabe first saw it in the fall of 1883. 403-762-1557 or [email protected] Project Overview This project involves a major redevelopment of Cave and Basin National Historic Site of Canada. The main objective for this project is to improve Visitor Experience as well as strengthen protection of the cultural and natural resources at Cave and Basin National Historic Site as the birth place of Canada’s National Park System. Specific Elements of the Project include; Improvements to the pathway from parking lot and forecourt area in front of the Bathing Pavilion including new outdoor interpretive media, and better disabled access. Upgrades to the Service Road including a turnaround for emergency vehicles and a vehicle drop off area Upgraded site services Rehabilitation of Belvederes and entry points Rehabilitation to the 1914 Bathing Pavilion including removal of the existing second floor exhibit area, and development of a new exhibit hall on the main level profiling the National Park System Redevelopment of the existing pool deck with an interactive water feature, programming spaces for four seasons and possible skating surface. Refresh of the reconstructed 1887-1903 Bathhouse. Project will start during the summer of 2010 with deconstruction of the interior spaces within the Bathing Pavilion and finish with a grand opening by Spring 2012 Page 2 Site Plan Central Message: This is the birthplace of Canada’s National Parks Themes: Birthplace of Canada’s National Parks: “Cave and Basin, the birthplace of Canada’s Parks, has a long history of human habitation dating back some 10,000 years.” From Sea to Sea to Sea: “Today, the spirit of Cave and Basin is found across Canada in Parks Canada’s system of protected areas.” Reviving Body and Spirit: “Canadians have a long tradition of using their protected places to revive body and spirit. The rich bathing history of Cave and Basin reflects this.” Understanding and Protecting: “Both the environment at Cave and Basin and its history are shaped by the water that flows from these hot springs. Protecting and understanding special places such as this for current and future generations is Parks Canada’s mandate.” Paul Legris Page 3 Strategic Goals Visitor Experience and Education Celebrate and promote awareness of Canada’s family of protected heritage places that is the legacy and commemorative significance of this high profile location in Banff National Park. Introduce new personal and non-personal programs that appeal to a range of traditional and emerging learning styles and that will engage a variety of audiences including regional residents, local staff, and the full range of priority audiences (new Canadians, urban Canadians, and youth). Resource Protection Strengthen protection of Level I and II cultural resources associated with Cave and Basin NHSC. Strengthen protection of the endangered Banff Springs Snail and promote awareness of the endangered species program. Identify and support management practices that protect the heritage character of the Bathing Pavilion as a Classified Federal Heritage Building Marketing and Promotion Revitalize the Cave and Basin in a manner that reaches out to new Canadians and youth; builds increased relevance with local/regional markets and appeals to the gentle explorer types, personal history explorers, and cultural History Buffs that are on Banff Avenue. Use the Cave and Basin as a key venue to inspire all Canadians to celebrate the successes of Canada’s protected heritage areas system. Market and promote lesser known national parks and national historic sites. Employ a collaborative approach with the Town of Banff, tourism industry, Aboriginal people, and others on key aspects of the renewal project Outcomes: Visitor will... This facility will have a retail space, washroom facilities and interpretive information.
