FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK
The 2015 Annual Show can only be hailed as another success story for our club. The 28 exhibitors swelled the number
of entries to 281 of which 23 were in the egg competitions. Kim George from Crookwell, NSW was given the task of
adjudicating this year. The largest classes as usual were the Australian Langshan Bantam Black Pullets (38) and Bantam Black
Ckls (29). The Blue bantam entries also increased, with 19Pullets and 17 Cockerels. The Australian Langshan blue bantam
entries increase each year and it was great to see some in the junior classes. This year saw a big increase in white Australian
Langshans too with 10 large and 23 bantams benched.
CONGRATULATIONS Nick and Kelvin Fenaughty on winning Bird in Show for the second time in a row! Their stunning
black Australian Langshan Bantam pullet stole the show, a deserving winner. This little pullet narrowly beat Elizabeth
Batcheldor’s immaculately prepared and presented black bantam hen which really caught the eye of the judge. Both birds
are a credit to their owners, the epitome of the criteria judges are looking for in Australian Langshans.
The Croad Feature of the show was a great success with Champion Croad Langshan in Show won by Mark Lee with his
black pullet. For this special feature event Mark received a beautifully framed rosette sent from England, a card depicting a
watercolour painting of a Croad hen, (painted by Celia Lewis, a well known English artist). Lyn Heigl - Secretary of the Croad
Langshan Club of Great Britain had signed the card which was presented in a lovely silver frame. Mark also received a $150
Gift pack donated by Allfarm Animal Health. Most Successful Croad Exhibitor was Mark Lee who received an award from
Australasian Poultry Magazine. New member and newcomer to the world of showing poultry, Inger Bray also had success,
winning “Reserve Champion Blue Croad Langshan” at her second ever show! Congratulations Inger, keep up the great work
and welcome to the Langshan Club of Victoria.
The Junior classes were strong this year with another new member, Michael Lloyd taking home the major award,
Junior Bird in Show proudly sponsored by the ever supportive George and Faye Norman. Welcome and congratulations
Michael. Dimity Hague won Reserve Junior Bird in Show with a Bantam Blue cockerel the Hague family had bred; Dimity’s
enduring smile increasing that little bit more.
For the second year in a row, The Noeleen Battley Trophy was won by Sonya Ford with her blue bantam hen - this little
fowl just keeps on keeping on!. Congratulations Sonya and thankyou for your help assisting the photographer Sonya King
who kindly agreed to be the Club’s official photographer. I put together a collage of her photos on the front of the
newsletter.
The egg Competition was very well supported - with the Painted Egg and Decorated Egg classes hotly contested - there
are members out there with many hidden talents! Thankyou Liz Batcheldor for stewarding for Neil Penny who had the
unenviable task of judging the eggs. “Champion Plate of Eggs” was won by Colin Kincaid of Maffra with “Plate of 6 Large
Brown Eggs” receiving a $50 voucher from Silkies Rose Farm. “Reserve Plate of Eggs” was won by Tony Milton “Plate of 6
Brown Bantam Egg”s. The award for Best Decorated Egg was won by Joyce Anderson who once more showed her artistic side
with Humpty Dumpty on the Wall. The “Best Painted Egg” was painted by Deb Sigmund detailing an English cottage and
gardens scene, encompassing the egg. Please continue reading for all show results later in this newsletter.
The Junior Acitivity Centre was not as popular as last year with fewer children around to participate. Jo Hague deserves
an honorable mention here. Thanks for all your preparation and organising activities for the children. The variety was
enjoyed by all the kids who joined in.
There are many people who help to make an event successful t and the Langshan Club of Victoria members are
incomparable. Without their kindness and willingness to “get down and dirty” the show would not be the amazing success it
is. Michael Jones stepped in to the Show Manager’s shoes while Brett had unavoidable work commitments; not an easy job
Page 1
but Michael just smiled and did what had to be done. His stewards Tony Mann and Mark Lee assisted by Graham Sargennt were kept on their toes, this team doing a wonderful job supporting the judge. Tony Milton set out the trophies and
arranged all the sashes and tells me that next year it will “all run smoother than silk” . Great job Tony. Liz Batcheldor and
Nick Fenaughty didn’t bat an eyelid when asked to help in the “kitchen” which was kept very busy all day. It would be gravely
remiss of me to neglect to mention the “girls”who run the catering department. Kathy Holmes, Lee Holmes and Kelly
Williams. Though they have this catering business down to a fine art but are always very grateful for any help. Many thanks
for the great food and I loved the vegie soup!
We have no show if we have no competitors - So, thank you to all the exhibitors; many of you travelling many
kilometers beautiful Langshans. This effort and support made this Annual Show one to remember and I eagerly await the
next one.
Special thank you to David Geering, President of the Langshan Club of Australia, for taking time to visit and exhibit with our
Club, all the way from Dubbo. We also thank Freddie Brincat-Tree, who also tore up the bituman all the way from South
Australia. It was a pleasure to welcome you to Victoria. Last but not least thank you to all club members, their families and
friends who made the day such a friendly, enjoyable and very memorable day.
Each year the Club receives generous donations, sponsorship and support; and on behalf of the Langshan Club of
Victoria, I soncerely thank the following members, businesses, organisations and clubs..

Well done Mark!
JUNIORS
It was very pleasing to see some new faces in the juniors, and of course their Langshans! Michael Lloyd and his dad, Brendan,
covered many kilometers to attend this year’s show which turned out to be a very worthwhile trip. Congratulations again
Michael on your exciting win, Junior Bird in Show. Well done! Nine year old Dimity Hague from Maffra is not new to
showing Langshans and won Reserve Junior Bird in Show with a blue cockerel the Hague family had bred themselves. Her
smiling, happy face has been around since she was little 5 year old. Congratulations Dimity!

ROYAL MELBOURNE POULTRY SHOW
An opportunity presented itself this year for the Langshan
Club of Victoria to participate in the trade stands. A group
of us set to and created a very attractive and informative
stand in the “Poultry Clubs” section. The Essendon Poultry
Club, VPFA and Mountain District Poultry Club had a few
brochures as well. Liz Batcheldor and I had three large
poster-size photos laminated along with an excellent
selection of Langshans photos which formed part of our
display and another poster with Croad Langshan photos.
Added to this were a number of Langshan Club and
Langshan breed and information brochures. Our efforts
were well rewarded with numerous enquiries,
membership applications and orders for birds!

Scene”
Busy “minding the shop” Brett Batcheldor from
the Club and Lou Sigmund, Chairman of the VPFA.
Melbourne displayed her usual wonders of wintery weather – cold grey skies, freezing temperatures, icy rain
Apart from the fact that we all suffered from frost bite, chilled bones, iced fingers, noses and toes –( Pavilion No. 10 at the
Royal Melbourne Showgrounds is now known as the “icebox”) and dripped icy-cold, freezing puddles of rainwater
everywhere at packup time ; the RMPS was great fun and it was so good to spend a relaxed time with fellow Langshan Club
members and others from the poultry fancy. Congratulations everyone on your successes, not only with your Langshans but
also with other breeds you exchibited.
