Food Pantry
Needs in the Summer
As we enter the summer period, the
pantry is preparing to meet the seasonal needs of families with children
who no longer have access to free
school lunches. During May, the pantry had 118 visits from
76 families comprised of 127 adults and 90 children. June’s
most wanted list: breakfast cereals, convenience meals such
as meat ravioli, and fruit cups. For information about volunteering or questions about the pantry contact
dkchesney@hot mail.com.
Congratulations to Joey Hammond after five
years and three straight state championships, has
stepped down to become Assistant Coach at
Wake Forest University. Well done, Joey!!!!
Rock the Red Kettle Kidz Style will be held at
High Point Country Club, 800 Country Club Dr., High
Point, NC from 11:45a.m.-1:30p.m. Tickets $30, Table of 8

and Girls Club Special Guest: Mandy Young.
Mandy has lived a life that most would not choose
to live. From staying months at a time in hospitals, to 27+
years of research, to being diagnosed as the only person in
the world that has her genetic defect. And while her life has
been a roller coaster ride of ups and downs, she wouldn’t
change a single day.
Mandy story has been features in countless newspaper articles like USA Today, in Good Housekeeping
Magazine and on T.V. Shows like Extra, Montel Williams,
NBC Nightly News and international programming like
CNN’s Medical Mysteries. She has been honored to be the

When Saints Sing the Blues
A Seminar for Faith Professionals
When: July 10, 2014
Time: 6:00-9:00pm
Jamestown Presbyterian Church
Christian Life Center
1804 Guilford College Road
Jamestown, NC 27282
When life is extremely challenging or hurtful, spiritually strong people may become depressed. Some may
even want to quit marching. But the experiences of biblical saints assure us there is hope and help available. Growth
and recovery are possible!
Brenda Poinsett, author of eighteen books, will be speaking at this seminar hosted by the Mental Health Association in Greensboro on Thursday, July 10th from 6:00-9:00pm at Jamestown Presbyterian Church, located at 1804
Guilford College Road in their Christian Life Center.
When Brenda struggled with depression, people were surprised-and some shocked-because she was such a
strong person. It was this reaction that prompted her to write When Saints Sing the Blues. In this book, she describes
the depression of 11 biblical characters. This list includes such biblical greats as Moses, Elijah, Job, Jonah, and Hannah showing that even the strongest people can become depressed, recover and can go on to experience a meaningful
life.
This event is aimed at clergy and lay leaders to help identify people in their midst who may be battling depression and encourage ways to compassionately and spiritually help them through their struggles. Light refreshments
will be served from 6:00-6:30pm and the seminar will begin promptly at 6:30pm. Pre-register to reserve your copy of
the book and your seat at this faith-filled and inspirational event. Registration is $15 and is open until June 27, 2014.
REGISTER HERE *The Christian Life Center is located at the rear of the church on the lower level. There
is plenty of parking. For more information, contact Myla Erwin at [email protected] or call 336-373-1402.

this means. Since my commissioning and officially becoming “Rev. Collins”, I have
Eating Disorder (Agape Room)
been asked questions regarding my call to be an ordained Deacon. Hopefully, this artiNo UMYF
cle will answer some of those questions.
I am called to ordained ministry as a Deacon. A Deacon is a clergyperson who is called
to a ministry of Word, Service, Compassion and Justice, and serves in an area of specialized ministry. Deacons serve within local congregations or settings beyond the
local church such as hospitals, schools, social-service and mission agencies, denominational agencies such as our Conference office, and more. A Deacon’s appointment may
also be to attend school. Deacons lead ministries of service, compassion and justice
connecting the church to the world. They serve through worship leadership, preaching,
and teaching, as well as nurturing spiritual vitality. Additionally, they are appointed by
the Bishop but Deacons do not itinerate.
For me, ministry as a Deacon is lived out through ministering with children and youth
by sharing the Gospel with them (preaching and teaching), nurturing them on their
faith journey, and leading them as well as equipping them to lead, in ministry opportunities to reach out to others. I also live out my call by ministering with the entire
church through worship leadership, preaching, and teaching, as well as bringing forth
various ministry opportunities that connect the church to the needs of the world. I feel
that my call to ministry began during my childhood years. I am a “church baby” and do
not remember a time when I was not involved in church activities or that my faith did
not influence my decisions. My relationship with Christ has always been a part of who
I am, and throughout my life, I have been surrounded by many wonderful people that
have recognized, nurtured, and affirmed my gifts for ministry.
Thank you, Christ Church family, for your nurture and affirmation of my call, and for
welcoming me on a warm Sunday morning in August 2011. I am truly blessed to be in
ministry with you. I truly see the face of Christ, the face of love, when I look at each of
you. I look forward to continuing in ministry with you as we make disciples of Jesus
Christ for the transformation of the world.
Grace and Peace, Kim

Please remember in prayer: our homebound members and our members in
nursing and assisted living facilities.
The focus Scripture for our Summer
2014 ASP trip is John 20:21 -- "As the Father has
sent me, so I send you."
The Greek verb apostello -- which
means "to send forth" -- shows up in the New
Testament 129 times. It is used to describe how
God sent Jesus Christ into the world and how
Jesus sent his disciples into the world. The early
church even used a form of the word -- apostle -to designate those "set apart and sent" to build the
Kingdom of God. Eight adults and 19 youth from
CUMC have spent the last six months preparing
to be "sent" -- sent beyond our comfort zone, beyond our stereotypes, beyond every boundary.
Our faith pushes us out of our church and into the
world! July 20 we leave for Greene County, Tennessee, an area where the poverty rate has nearly
doubled since 2009. We will spend five days
working 8 hours a day to help make four homes
warmer, safer and drier. We want to thank our
CUMC family for your generous support of this
mission. On Sunday, July 27, the day after our
return, we look forward to telling you about the
work we've completed, the wonderful people
we've met, and about the special "God moments"
that helped us grow in faith during our week of
service. In the meantime, please keep us in your
prayers!
Your 2014 ASP Volunteers: Jeff Batts;

Long; Emory McGlaughlin; Amy and Dave Nissen; Cory Payne; Maddy Reece; Ryan Sims;
Mike, Meredith and Spencer Stringfellow; Paul

serving on the ASP staff all summer in Avery
County, N.C.
Community Pancake Breakfast
and School Supply Giveaway
Our 2014 Community Pancake
Breakfast and School Supply Giveaway event is Saturday, August
16. We will kick off our school
supply collection effort on Sunday, July 13 -- just
in time for back-to-school sales and promotions.
We will once again be striving to fill 500 packs
with basic school supplies, so that children in our
surrounding neighborhood who need a little help
getting ready for the new school year will have the
tools they need to get their school year off to a
good start. Watch for more information posted
around the church beginning now.
BackPack Beginnings Shoe Drive
This summer, BackPack Beginnings will be working with Funds2Orgs to
begin an annual shoe drive. This organization pays non-profits for collecting gently
used shoes that they re-purpose, distribute
to 3rd world countries, and use to help people in those countries establish shoe stands
in order to earn a living. The minimum
goal is to collect 300 bags of shoes (25
pairs of shoes per bag). Used shoes are
sold for 40¢ per pound -- about $3,000 if
we meet the goal. This money will be used
by BackPack Beginnings to purchase
clothes for students in need who attend
schools with a SMOD (Standard Mode of
Dress) requirement. There are 38 GCS
schools
with
a
SMOD
requirement. BackPack Beginnings simply does
not get enough donations to meet the requests of the students and families in need.
They plan to begin the campaign on July
1st and it will end October 1st (although
donations will be accepted prior to July
1st).
As part of our mission focus, a
Shoe Drive will be held during our Vacation Bible School, July 13th-17th, benefiting BackPack Beginnings. Please bring in
your old shoes and put them in the shoe
collection box located in the Family Life
Center. All sizes and types of shoes including flip flops, boots, heels, and cleats are
accepted as long as they don’t have
holes. Please tie or rubber band your shoes
together. Grace and Peace, Kim
CUMC Community Garden
Thanks to the congregation of CUMC for
sharing so generously in assistance and
monetary donations to the Community
Garden! We are harvesting green beans, zinnias
and potatoes. We now
have a rain barrel and a
method to water our
crops. If you would like
to help water or plant
seeds, please call Lew at 454-6283. Lew
Stookey, [email protected]
United Methodist Men will meet Thursday, August 14th at 7:00p.m. for their
meeting and dinner in the Reception
Room. Please come and join us!!!!!

Help Wanted For New Directory
Putting together a membership directory takes a lot of time and effort!
However, when the tasks are broken down and shared by several people, it becomes far more manageable. It is time for Christ Church to start the process and
produce a new directory. There are many ways you can help!
• Vision - help decide what you want our new directory to be and how it
will look. Which company
should produce
it? How can22we improve on our

directory?
• Plan - help organize and schedule the various parts of the production,
such as Sunday School class pictures and appointment times.
 Pictures - gather (or take!) photos of your church groups and activities. We can use either printed or digital photos.
The Communications Committee hopes our new directory will reflect the
true spirit of our church family. It can if you will help! Contact Cathie Chesney
([email protected], 454-4184) and offer your assistance today!
