South Central Troy Neighborhood Watch Update
Our last meeting was held on October 19th at the USTA Headquarters. Officer Wade gave an update on our area. During
the month of September, there were 23 arrests. A map with
all of the details was given to meeting attendees and questions
and concerns followed. Thanks to residents that helped this
past month with missing dog situations.

We had a representative from Hart Alarm Systems speak to
our group about safe guarding properties to protect from potential break-ins and burglaries. He stressed the following tips
to safeguard properties:
1. Motion detecting lights in the rear of properties are helpful in scaring off potential criminals
2. Use lights on a timer when away from your property.
Make sure the timing of lights makes logical sense. (bedroom
light turned off after living space etc.)
3. All deadbolts should be more than 1 inch deep
4. All windows should be secured/locked/pinned when nobody is home to safeguard property.
Hart Alarm Systems is a family run operation and has been in
existence for more than 30 years. They have a great reputation with residents and they are willing to do free estimates for
security cameras and alarm systems. Their website is
www.hartalarm.com and their phone number is (518) 2722007.

My Favorite Bookshelf by Mike Esposito
Moving from one residence to another (which I am in the process of doing) can be a hectic experience and is made especially difficult when you have to let go of half the books accumulated
over eighteen years in a home that had an ample number of built in bookshelves and additional
space for a few extra bookcases. Two shelves in particular that will go untouched and moved in
tact represent my collection of books on Troy. With the coming holiday season why not consider buying one or more of these fine books as a gift for a family member or friend.
Don Rittner’s Troy, A Collar City History; Troy; Remembering Troy: Heritage on the
Hudson; Troy: Then & Now; Brian and Becky Nielsen, Troy in Vintage Postcards; Jack Casey’s The Trial of Bat Shea: A Novel; Maureen Stapleton and Jane Scovell (Maureen’s Autobiography), A Hell of a Life;Jean Winston Adler’s The Affair of the Veiled Murderess: An
Antebellum Murder Mystery; People by John Scanlon (this fine book may be out of print,
check with a used book store); Troy’s Little Italy by Michael Esposito; The Nightingales of
Troy by Alice Fulton; The Poesten Kill: Waterfalls to Waterworks in the Capital District
by John Warren; John Connor’s A City in Color: Troy, New York; John G. Waite and Diana
S. Waite, Industrial Archeology in Troy, Waterford, Cohoes, Green Island, and Watervliet
and Diana’s Ornamental Ironwork: Two Centuries of Craftsmanship in Albany and Troy,
New York; Hudson Mohawk Gateway: An Illustrated History by Thomas Phelan and P.
Thomas Carroll; A Resourceful People: A Pictorial History of Rensselaer County, New
York by Rachel D. Bliven, Robert N. Andersen, G. Steven Draper, Eva Gemmill, Hughes
Gemmill, Joseph A. Parker and Helen Upton; Troy, New York, and the Building of the USS
Monitor by Stephen Muller and Jennifer Taylor; The Bell Casters of Troy by Sydney Ross;
The Foremost Guide to Uncle Sam Collectibles by Gerald E. Czulewicz, Sr.; Who Was
“Uncle Sam”: Illustrated History of the Life of Our National Symbol by Cecile and JeanPierre Mouraux; Skating Engineers: Hockey at RPI by Kurt Stutt; Frank Laiacona’s Tory
Hill and other short stories; College and Eighth, a memoir by Herb Hyde; Saving Troy: A
Year with Firefighters and Paramedics in a Battered City by William B. Patrick; former
Troy physician Dr. Richard Seltzer’s Down From Troy: A Doctor Comes of Age; Looking
Back: A History of Troy and Rensselaer County 1925-1980 by Joseph A. Parker (possibly
out of print, check with a used book store).
Don Rittner’s new book, Legendary Locals of Troy, as well as New York’s Capital District,
1978 - 2003 by Tom Killips will be added to my favorite bookshelf by Christmas. I am long
overdue for a trip to Market Block Books, Moss Books, and the RCHS, RPI and HVCC bookstores as well as the fine used book stores in Troy including the Book Seller at the Troy Public
Library, (’Burgh Branch), and the Book Outlet in the Atrium. Happy book shopping in Troy!

Little Italy Remembers . . .
During the past few weeks four long time residents of the neighborhood died. We remember
with respect Catherine (Kay) Weingartner Nichols of Ida Street, Catherine (Kay) Bevevino Colasessano formerly of Hill Street, Mary Greco Panza formerly of Fourth Street (lately of Kennedy Towers) and Peter Shaver of Second Street. Kay Nichols served for many years as President of the Washington Park Friendly Seniors and like her former neighbor Mary Panza was a
dedicated parishioner of St. Mary’s Church where both were active volunteers in the parish
community. Mary was always available to assist with mailings to neighbors during the years
South Central sponsored the Neighborhood Resource Center on Fourth and Adams a few doors
north of her residence. She also volunteered at Seton Health. Kay Colasessano, whose family,
the Bevevino’s have lived for decades throughout Troy’s Little Italy neighborhood were consummate community volunteers. Kay worked for HVCC’s Food Services. Her husband Phil
Colasessano was an accomplished musician in the Capital District. Peter Shaver served as Park
historian for the Washington Park Association, always made time to conduct tours of the
neighborhood, continually doing research on the parks’ former residents and their homes. We
offer their families and friends our sympathy at their loss
