Herr Markus Assfalg
Herr Markus Assfalg trained as an electrical engineer
and later as an attorney. Since 2009, he is the Head of
Economic Development of the Canton of Zurich.
Previously, he was Head of the Business Association
Swissmen and Secretary General of the University of
St. Gallen.
In an Aargauer article in the summer of 2009, Markus was interviewed
on his appreciation of Bob Dylan, within an economical context of
course, and was questioned about the song title “The Times They
Are A-Changing”. Even through the financial crisis back in 2009
Markus maintained a positive and innovative outlook for the economic
development of Zurich. He is immensely supportive of all innovative
educational institutions, which in our opinion, clearly shows a
correlation between a strong economy and its potential for increased
quality education. Markus equally has a great sense of humour, and is
passionately trilingual in all of the Tandem IMS languages. Finally, it is
always a pleasure to deliberate about “The Times They Are AChanging ” whenever we meet!

Tandem International Multilingual School was first set up in 2004 as an
international bilingual Pre-School in three locations on the northern
shore of Lake Zurich. As a non-profit institution, we have grown into an
international multilingual school offering classes from the nursery age
of 6 months to grade 6 of primary school. Sonya Maechler-Dent and her
husband Dr. Philip Maechler founded the first Tandem school in Uetikon
am See in August 2004.
Sonya trained in the French-speaking part of Switzerland and is
certified as a Swiss primary school teacher. She further studied for a
Masters in Education Management focusing on multilingualism and
organisational culture at Oxford Brookes University in the UK. She also
holds business diplomas in Global Leadership and Diversity
Management. She has taught in different school systems , Swiss & international, and has led training programmes for teachers in
Switzerland, Japan, India, France and Estonia.

Philip has a PhD in Robotics and has a track record in research, IT and
financial institutions, and although he did not wish to be mentioned
here, as he so modestly believes he is no match for the pedagogical
crew, it is also very much thanks to him that Tandem can celebrate its
today's success - Tandem simply could not have been done without him
and his dedication to supporting innovative and quality driven
education. He, alone, battled through the Swiss administrational
labyrinth in the first years of the school's existence. The challenge and fascination of integrating multilingualism into an
international school curriculum became the driver of Sonya‘s
commitment to Tandem IMS. She is backed by an enthusiastic and
efficient team of educational specialists to not only develop Tandem IMS
into a large thriving school. Having started with only six children at the
Uetikon location, Tandem IMS has now close to 200 children of over 25
nationalities with about 60% of them communicating in three or more
languages.

Our 1st children, our 1st teachers
Ten of our first children are here today with us. Several of them have
kept in touch over the years and it has been lovely to see them blossom
into young adolescents. But the best of all, is that most of them are
still bilingual and kept to that multilingual path of education.
We therefore welcome here with us tonight Alexander, Chloe, Isabella,
Kornelia, Lara, Lea, Lucas, Max, Nahuel and Thierry. We also thank their
parents for entrusting them to us 10 years ago!
The three first teachers, back in the summer of 2004, are also here with
us tonight and we would like to warmly welcome Karin HardeggerWalker, Audrey Riklin-Dingli and Judith Haas. Their passion and
dedication in that first year is what allowed Tandem IMS to build on its
history. The beginnings were not easy but the team was excellent and
their incredible efforts are still remembered with immense gratitude.

Also worthy of mention are two more teachers who joined the team
within months of the school opening, Chrissy Schmid and Lee-Anne
Weber. Both are still part of our wonderful Tandem IMS team, 10 years
later. We particularly thank them for being such an important part of
the school’s story and future development. Our heartfelt thanks to you
as well as to all our colleagues who joined you with enthusiasm in the
following years of this adventurous decade!
Name, Logo and Design
In early Spring of 2004 - the Tandem founders were striving to not only
bring their concept to life (and battling with all the Swiss administration
that goes with such idealistic adventures….), but also to seek ways to
give their ideas some colour… Creating a name, finding a logo, setting
up the first webpage… The name in itself proved to be an enormous adventure. Trawling
through thesauruses, dictionaries, and the first Google translators
available 10 years ago - many words were considered such as:

Teaching, Two Wriggly Toes etc… All along
the idea of two…. Back then the search
was focused only on a name for a preschool, not knowing of course that we
would in time grow into a large
international school less than 10 years
later… Looking back, we are immensely
glad that the generic and more
appropriate name of Tandem made its way into our Founders' shortlist! After all, one can only imagine how a Grade 6 Primary student would
take to their school being called “Two Wriggly Toes”.
For the start up phase of the school’s logo, a young design student,
Janine Fuchs kindly jumped in to help us. The first logo was designed in
the style of a woodblock print, and perfectly branded the school just in
time for it’s official opening in August 2004 in Uetikon. This led nicely to
the website banner and the two little woodblock people to round it off.

The first year of Tandem went by quickly - the school grew very fast as
did the ideas and concept design. The founders realised that although
they liked the woodblock print idea as well as the design, it referred to
an older style of education, representing a more static concept that did
not convey the idea of the multilingual innovative education ahead - it

Daniel Meier, founder of the Unikat design and
communication company in Küsnacht and his
wife Jasmine Miescher-Meier both fully understood
the needs of the growing Tandem school and most
kindly offered their unbelievable support, which has
remained true and firm right up to this current day. Daniel Meier, his partner Patrick Lienert, and their
team: Simone Jung, Samo Stahler, Jacqueline Steiner,
Olivier Pasche and Noemi Kandler to name only a
few. They all worked on our projects for the last 9
years including logos, website, flyers, folders, newspaper adverts,
banners, school bus design, children's Portfolios, Progress reports, etc. Their support throughout our journey has been tremendous!
The idea of the colour green came as Daniel Meier visited our school in
Uetikon for the first time and saw the green walls in the hallway. The
splash logo and its other colorful splashes defining the groups were
perfect for our pre-school, but were later replaced by a sleeker look
in 2010 when the primary school was first opened in the Freiestrasse,
Zurich. We are immensely grateful for all the support from Daniel Meier and
his team, for their amazing creativity and their smiles every time we

well acquired writing, and creative skills to construct
a time capsule! With their names, a few adjectives
to describe their current selves, and their artistic
representation of dreams and aspirations for their

dream, and who changes paths completely!
Looking very much like a military storage box, the Capsule should be
able to withstand the test of time. This capsule will be stored away,
somewhere safe... to be ignored, but not forgotten, and reopened for
the Tandem IMS Silver Anniversary in 2029!

To be displayed and remembered for years to come,
these special 10th Year Murals have been created by
the children of the three Tandem IMS locations.
Each child took ownership of one tile, and was asked to
draw themselves in the future, or around their hand depending on age. To create a bigger effect, and to
represent a whole school with co-operation and
teamwork - the tiles were then professionally grouted
and framed by Mr Marcel Merkli, creating a fantastic
display of the children’s work. The Murals will be
mounted for all to share in the individual school
locations, where this special 10 Year Celebration can be
thought of fondly for years and years to come.
The one thing that did strike the PTA
member Gillian Walter, who led the
workshop with the children, was the
absolute certainty the younger children had
of what they would become! Anything and
everything is possible! There seemed no
doubt in their minds about where they
would be in 15 years time.
However, in contrast, the older children
really had a number of inner battles and
mini breakdowns over the question. Gillian
Walter described how amazing it was to see
first hand how the dreaded question of
“what will the future hold” can still be
tackled with a fun sense of fantasy for the
younger children, yet becomes a somewhat
terrifying reality in the later primary years.

Andrew Bond can easily be considered one of the most
popular and successful children's song writers and
musicians in Switzerland today. His fun melodies are
frequently heard in Kindergartens, classrooms and living
rooms throughout German speaking Switzerland.
Music has always played an important role in Andrew's
life, from his childhood years in the Democratic Republic
of Congo and England, to his time as a music and religion

children and young people to take their own issues and

The Art Vernissage: May 2014
Back in May 2014, the children of Tandem IMS worked on a
large scale art project on the theme of “Tandem’s Celebrations
of Ten”. All classes from our youngest members, to Year 5
Primary put their creative hats on to make an art piece along
the set theme.

Last winter, all children, families and staff were called upon to
brainstorm many creative words and sentences, reflecting all ideas
around the essence and culture of the school. All lyrics in the song
were indeed by a Tandem IMS member, with Andrew putting them so
magically together. A few of the amusing sentences were taken “tel
quel” such as the “hats and caps being green” or the “just like home
but without mum and dad”.

Our older children, wishing to have the song slightly more modernized,
improvised with Andrew on the day of the recording last May and
“rapped” the last verse. It became “no mum or dad” and the green
was from “planet mars”….

The children have had fun! Which was the aim of the workshop.
Andrew is not only an entertainer, but an inspiration to children and
their learning. He caught their imaginations, had them moving to the
beat, led our older children with a firm but “cool” hand, gave them a
recording experience and the patience to do many retakes… and
brought melody and rhythm to the Tandem IMS name.
