Visit our gardens
Come and explore the Classic Gardens of Somerset. You will find
an impressive collection of styles and character, from gardens
that have been newly made to those that have evolved over
centuries. There are cottage gardens and kitchen gardens;
woodland walks and parkland; botanical hothouses and
architectural features that include a viaduct and England’s
highest powered fountain! Be inspired by the gardens and enjoy
browsing the plant nurseries and garden shops and eating
luscious lunches and teas in the cafes.
Set in the heart of England’s west-country, there’s plenty more
to see and do too. Somerset’s unspoilt countryside is perfect for
walking and cycling. The picturesque villages and market towns
offer interesting shops, lively street-markets and excellent eatingplaces. In the summer, enjoy flower shows, music festivals and
outdoor theatre. In the winter, carnivals and Christmas fairs.
Discover a garden
that you can’t see
every day and help
a good cause too.
The NGS promotes
the opening of
private gardens
to the public for
one-off days or
special events, with
the proceeds going
to charities. NGS
Somerset raised
£64,000 for charities
last year and helped
the public see some
wonderful gardens.

The Bishop’s Palace
The Walled Gardens of Cannington
Explore 14 acres of gardens located in the heart of the historic city of
Wells. Fine specimen trees with diverse and luxuriant borders,
complete with restored 19th century picturesque style planting
surround the Palace and the ruins of the Great Hall. Discover the
source of water from which the City takes its name and picnic in a
peaceful arboretum. Family fun events, café and shop. A “must-see”
destination in Somerset.
An RHS partner garden, with a National Collection under
construction, the Walled Gardens of Cannington lie within the grounds
of a medieval Priory. Classic and contemporary features include the
‘hot’ herbaceous border, the blue garden, subtropical walk and a
Victorian style fernery. There is a botanical glasshouse where arid,
sub-tropical and tropical plants can be seen, and two smaller gardens
- areas of real tranquillity. The garden shop and tea rooms round off
an enjoyable visit.
