Dear member of the Fall 2008 graduating class:
Congratulations on the successful completion of your hard-earned
baccalaureate degree from Metropolitan State College of Denver.
This is a significant achievement of which you and your family
should be justifiably proud.
Just as you now have a solid foundation on which to build a
career or further your education in graduate school, Metro State
has secured a strong heritage of educational opportunity and
excellence that will serve the Colorado community into the future
as we strive to become the nation’s preeminent public urban
baccalaureate college.
As a graduate of Metro State, you are now a part of that heritage,
which includes more than 62,000 alumni, all of whom through
their tenacity, energy and intelligence are helping put Metro State
on the map. Here are but a few examples of their achievements:
• Lois Tochtrop (’88, nursing and health care management) was recently elected assistant majority
leader in the Colorado State Senate. Fellow alumni K. Jerry Frangas (’98, social work) and Joe
Rice (’89, history) recently won re-election as state representatives.
• Brian Pieper (’72, physics), an engineer for Ball Aerospace, recently received the prestigious
NASA Exceptional Public Service Medal for his work on the CloudSat mission.
• Claudia Janiszewski (’07, nonprofit organization and development) founded the nonprofit
Organization for the Support of Albania’s Abandoned Babies, for which she received the 2002
Albanian Presidential Medal.
• Katherine Archuleta, a 1971 graduate, is the senior policy advisor for the City and County of
Denver. She has also served as chief of staff in the U.S. Department of Transportation.
• Tracie Keesee (’77, political science), a 19-year Denver Police Department veteran, was recently
promoted to chief of the Research, Training and Technology Division. Keesee holds a doctorate
from the University of Denver.
Your degree from Metro State symbolizes the knowledge, experiences and skills you have attained that
make you ready and qualified to accept the challenge of engaging as citizens in a culturally diverse society,
much as the people highlighted above have done. We eagerly anticipate your stream of accomplishments,
both large and small, and your continuing attachment to the Metro State community, which promises you
a very warm welcome whenever you return.
Please do keep in touch.
Sincerely,
Stephen M. Jordan, Ph.D.
President, Metropolitan State College of Denver

Commencement Speaker Terrance Carroll:
Speaker Designee of the Colorado House of Representatives
Terrance Carroll, who will begin his fourth term in the
Colorado House of Representatives (D-Denver) in
January, was recently selected Speaker of the House.
Pending election by the full house in January, he will be the
first African American to hold the position in Colorado.
Having grown up in what he calls one of the worst
neighborhoods of Washington, D.C., Carroll cites his
mother as his prime inspiration. The daughter of a
sharecropper and the granddaughter of a slave, Carroll’s
mother had no more than a third-grade education. Yet
despite the hardships of her life, Carroll said, “she imbued in
me a strong commitment to my community and a desire to
make a difference in the world that I live in.”
Prior to joining the legislature, Carroll worked as a police
officer, a nonprofit executive and a minister. He currently is
an attorney with Greenberg Traurig, LLC.
After being appointed to finish out a term in the statehouse in 2003, Carroll was elected to his first
full term in 2004. During his tenure in the legislature, Carroll has supported affordable housing,
secure pensions, fair wages, and quality and affordable healthcare. A longtime supporter of
education, he has chaired the Metro State Caucus of the legislature since it formed in 2006. He has
also served as chair of the House Judiciary Committee and as a member of the Legal Services and
the State, Veterans, and Military Affairs committees. He became assistant house majority leader in
February 2008.
Carroll was a member of the Colorado Secretary of State’s 2005 Blue Ribbon Election Panel and
the Colorado Criminal and Juvenile Justice Reform Commission. He has also served on numerous
nonprofit boards, primarily dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk children and families.
He holds a bachelor’s degree cum laude from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga., a master of divinity
degree from the Iliff School of Theology in Denver and a law degree from the Sturm College of
Law at the University of Denver. He is also a graduate of the Summer Leadership Institute at the
Harvard Divinity School.
In 2006, Carroll was named a Marshall Memorial Fellow by the German Marshall Fund of the
United States, a public policy institute dedicated to promoting greater understanding between the
United States and Europe. In 2005, he was named Legislator of the Year by the Colorado Trial
Lawyers Association. He received the Outstanding Recent Alumnus award from the Iliff School of
Theology In 2001. Denver Urban Spectrum newspaper recognized him as an “African-American Who
Makes a Difference” and the Rocky Mountain News cited him as an “Up and Coming African-American
Leader” in 1999.
Outgoing Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff said of Carroll: “Colorado is lucky to count
him as one of its leaders.”

Metro State: A Bold Goal of Preeminence
Established in 1965, Metropolitan State College of Denver enrolls nearly 22,000 students,
the second-largest undergraduate student population in Colorado. In 2005, Metro State
set the ambitious long-term goal of becoming the preeminent public urban baccalaureate
college in the nation, toward which it already has made significant progress.
Metro State is steadfast in its mission to provide students from all walks of life with a
high-quality education that prepares them for rewarding careers, postgraduate education
and lifelong learning in a multicultural, global and technological society. With diversity as
a core value, Metro State is proud to enroll more students of color than all other four-year
institutions in Colorado.
Metro State empowers students to create their own success by providing relevant,
enriching and individualized academic experiences. Unique attributes of the College
include outstanding, committed faculty with a passion for teaching; student-centered
learning; a personalized classroom experience with more student/faculty interaction; and
real-world, 21st century career preparation through a blend of theory and applied learning.
The College boasts accomplished professors who are known nationally in their respective
fields, including Associate Professor Cynthia Vannucci, who for the second time was
named Educator of the Year by the National Professional Convention Management
Association; adjunct faculty member and composer Leanna Kirchoff, whose choral
piece, “Meciendo” received the 2007 Sorel Medallion in an international competition
that culminated with a performance at Carnegie Hall; and Interim Deputy Provost and
Chicana/o Studies Associate Professor Luis Torres, who received the 2008 ¡Scouting Vale
La Pena! service award.
Metro State students are making a name for themselves as well. Our students are routinely
selected for nationally competitive study-abroad scholarships and win regional and national
awards in myriad academic areas such as theatre, piloting and accounting. For instance,
Metrosphere, the College’s student-produced literary magazine, received a 2007 Associated
Collegiate Press Pacemaker Award, considered by many to be student journalism’s
highest honor. The weekly television broadcast, Met Report, won the Emmy for Student
Achievement at the Heartland Regional Emmy Awards. And the Metro State Flight Team
once again qualified to compete at the national SAFECON competition.
The Class of 2008 joins the ranks of 62,000 proud Metro State alumni, the vast majority
of whom remain in Colorado to live and work as our teachers, nurses, accountants, pilots,
law enforcement officials, social workers and high-tech employees. Metro State graduates
run businesses, labor in the non-profit world and serve in government at the local
and state levels.
Metro State graduates are achieving their dreams. Roger Foster (’86, civil engineering
technology) is vice president of the URS Corporation in Atlanta and has managed
airport expansion programs at Richmond International, Newark International and Fort
Lauderdale International airports. Col. Laura Jane Richardson (’86, psychology) is the
first female commander of Ft. Myer.
The accomplishments of our students and graduates, and the better lives that education
brings them, are a great source of pride for Metro State and are an integral part of the
foundation on which we are building a national reputation for preeminence.

Academic Attire
Academic attire is modeled after monks’ clothing
from the Middle Ages, when college faculty
and students were members of religious orders.
In England, the faculty of many colleges and
universities still wear gowns, hoods and caps in
the classroom.
In the early 20th century, colleges and universities
throughout the world adopted guidelines for the
design and colors of academic attire. An institution
may design and register special attire for its
administrators and graduates, but it must conform
to certain standards. Once registered, the design/
color combination may not be duplicated by
other institutions.
The bachelor’s gown is most often black and has
long sleeves that taper to a point in the back. It
is always worn closed. At Metro State, women
do not wear a white collar with the gown. The
hood worn by the President’s Award recipient is a
Metropolitan State College of Denver bachelor’s
degree hood and is worn by this student to
represent the graduating class.
The gown signifying the master’s degree is also
usually black and may be worn open or closed. It
features oblong sleeves that hang below the wrist, tapering to a square cut with a cutaway arc.
Although usually black, the doctoral gown is sometimes seen in colors—usually gold, purple, blue or
red. The gown may be worn open or closed. The opening of the gown is faced with velvet and three
velvet chevrons run across its bell-shaped sleeves. The velvet facing and chevrons may be black or
the color representing the field of study.
The hood varies in length and shape according to the degree it represents—the shortest and smallest
signifies the bachelor’s degree and the longest and widest signifies the doctoral degree. The velvet
bordering the hood represents the degree field of study. The colors most frequently seen at Metro
State are royal blue – Philosophy; light blue –  Education; yellow – Science; green – Medicine.
The satin lining of the hood, each a specific design, represents the college or university at which the
individual earned his or her degree.
The Oxford Cap, or mortarboard as it is better known, completes the attire. In place of the hood,
bachelor’s candidates at Metro State wear colored tassels on the Oxford Cap to represent the
academic department of the College from which they earned their degrees. Those holding graduate
degrees usually wear black tassels, but those holding doctoral degrees may wear tassels of gold
thread, and may elect to wear a four-sided or eight-sided velvet tam instead of the Oxford Cap. Some
universities have designated the Cambridge Cap, a large, soft beret, for their administrators and those
who have earned a doctoral degree at that institution.
