About the 2016 Auction
Thanks to our donors we have a great auction on tap! This year’s event
offers opportunities for friends and family to get together to share great
meals, visit wonderful places, and experience the best of Leelanau. Get your
group together now to bid on items that you just can’t buy anywhere else!
Our online auction site (see link on our website: www.leelanauconservancy.
org) has a great “email this page to a friend” feature so that assembling
your “syndicate” and gathering friends to bid together is easy. Plan now to
have fun for a great cause. If you cannot come to the picnic, you may still win
auction items by placing a proxy bid online or by calling our office to place
your bid (231-256-9665).

Pre-Picnic Field Trips
Explore, learn, get to know your Conservancy Staff and Docents!
For complete information and directions visit leelanauconservancy.org/pre-picnic-field-trips/
We recommend sturdy hiking shoes, long pants, insect repellent, hats or sunscreen,
and water for all hikes.
3:00pm Kalchik-Newton Hike
3:00pm Brave the Distance!
Easement Hike from the Picnic Site
Come learn about the private
conservation easements surrounding the
Kalchik-Newton farm. Join Executive
Director Tom Nelson or Conservation
Easement Program Manager Yarrow
Brown on a walk from the KalchikNewton farm through neighboring
properties and private conservation
easement lands. Participants will have a
chance to meet conservation easement
landowners and experience a hike over
property that is not typically open to the
public. This is a family-friendly hike and
will be over moderate terrain. (50 max)
Bass Lake to Belanger Creek Preserve
Join Land Steward, Emily Douglas in this
rare opportunity for an adventurous (offtrail) 3-mile hike through a permanently
protected corridor of private conservation
easements and Conservancy-owned
land. This adventure will showcase a very
diverse suite of habitats including mature
hardwoods, young successional forests,
picturesque orchards, an impressive
leatherleaf bog, natural inland lakeshore,
and a coldwater trout stream. Hike
participants should expect moderate
difficulty with off-trail hiking through some
brush and the occasional downed log to
cross – maybe even some creek hopping –
quintessential Leelanau exploration!
(16 people max)
3:00pm Paddle on Bass Lake
Canoe, Kayak, or SUP
Matt Heiman, Director of Land Programs,
will lead a group paddle along 3,100
feet of protected inland lakeshore that
contains the headwaters of Belanger
Creek. Paddling along the lush shoreline
vegetation while watching bluegills and
bass swim amongst the lily pads is a
special opportunity since there is no public
access to this charming little lake that will
be accessed via a private conservation
easement. Matt will explain the amazing
natural features of this property and
how they complement the other projects
the Conservancy has completed nearby.
Attendees must bring their own canoe,
kayak or SUP board with paddle(s) and
PFDs (personal flotation device).
(24 people max)
3:00pm Protecting Farmland
Putnam Farm Land Protection Corridor
The multi-generational Putnam farm is
Leelanau Conservancy’s most recently
funded farmland protection project. We
anticipate closing the Putnam conservation
easement in the summer of 2017. Join Sam
Plotkin, Farm Programs Manager, on a tour
of this 147-acre property. Hikers have a rare
opportunity to traverse private property
and learn about Leelanau County’s unique
agricultural soils and how the Conservancy is
working to protect farmland. The adventure
will take hikers through what is one of
Leelanau Conservancy’s most significant
multi-property, contiguous, land-protection
corridors. (15 people max)
3:00pm Indoor Talk: The Great Lakes
Protecting Our Treasured Inland Seas
Join docent Bobbie Poor for an indoor
talk, at Saving Birds Thru Habitat, about
our Great Lakes, the threats against them,
and what we can do to protect them.
This will be a one-hour talk. Participants
are welcome to explore the sanctuary
immediately following. (40 people max)
3:15pm A Sanctuary for the Birds
Explore Charter Bird Sanctuary
Come learn about the Charter Sanctuary,
protected with private conservation
easements, over a special hike led by
Saving Birds Thru Habitat’s Executive
Director, Kay Charter. The Charter
Sanctuary includes open meadows, valued
wetlands, native forest land and provides
a broad range of habitat for migrating
birds, which breed, nest, and feed at the
property. (30 people max)
3:00pm Houdek Dunes Hike
Explore the Diverse Habitats of Houdek
Join Docent Ann McInnis on a tour of the
ecologically diverse Houdek Dunes Natural
Area. Participants will see the story of
dune succession played out before their
eyes. From the trail, you’ll see examples of
active blowout dunes, woodland pockets
sheltering the giant white birch trees, and
mature forested back dunes. This is a
family-friendly hike on a developed trail
system over moderate terrain. (20 max)
