JUNE 2016
From Our Pastor
Hello St. Mark’s Family,
OK, I know, it’s the summer and . . . God goes on vacation, Right?! Wait a
minute! “God never sleeps or slumbers, never leaves us or forsakes us, God is
always there, here, everywhere, no matter where we go, God goes with us.”
Will you share your email address with us? If you have an
email address and it is not
registered with us or if your
email address has changed,
would you please share it with
us by emailing :
[email protected]
We are sending this and future issues to those of you
with email addresses if you
have so requested. If you are
interested in receiving your
issues by email and have not
yet requested, please contact
the church office.
The Vision of St.
Mark’s United
Methodist church
is to inspire people
of all ages, through
acts of love and
service, to know
For many of us, summer is a time for family vacations, days at the beach and
enjoying the wonderful warm weather. Summer is also a great time to slow down,
get into the Word, spend time in holy conversations with one another and continue
to learn and grow in our faith in God. We will continue to have our 8:15 and
11:00 Sunday services at the church, along with our 9:45 service at Idlewild Park.
This has become a really popular service where extended family can come
together in a really casual atmosphere to praise God and join with other believers.
(There’s plenty of time to get to the beach or on the boat afterwards!) We will
have some really great sermon series this summer, like “A Disciple’s Heart:
Growing in Love and Grace”, “6 Decisions that will change your life”, and
“Does God care if We Go Green?” Along with coming to worship regularly this
summer, how about reading a Christian classic such as “Mere Christianity” by
C.S. Lewis or “Pilgrim’s Progress” by John Bunyan. I just recently read a book
that I highly recommend called “Servants, Misfits, and Martyrs” by James C.
Howell which gives you a glimpse inside the lives of regular, everyday people
who made a profound impact on the world through their service to God.
If you enjoy cooking out on the grill (who doesn’t), why not invite some friends
over for a barbeque and Bible time! Throw some burgers on the grill, enjoy some
good fellowship and read and discuss God’s Word together!
Looking for a way to serve this summer? How about helping out with Vacation
Bible School? We need folks throughout the entire week of July 18-22 to step up
and help with meals, decorate the church, help with registration, recreation, crafts.
It is so much fun and you receive such a blessing as you bless our kids. There are
plans for a Bible study for adults (especially the parents of the kids) during VBS
also, so look for more information to come about that.
Make this a summer that is meaningful in your relationship with God and with
others. God Bless you, my friends! Pastor Missy

The United Methodist Men of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church meet the second Tuesday of
every month, except July at 6:30 pm at the Church. Our monthly agenda includes bible study
and ways in which we can serve our Church membership and our adjoining community. All men
in the Church are considered members and we look forward to serving the needs of all men.
We will meet again on Tuesday, June 14th at 6:30 pm in room 155 at the church.
Our meeting on June 14th will be our last meeting until August as we do not meet in July.
Please plan to attend this meeting to set our summer commitments. There is always something
to do for our Church in the summer.
We still need to finish the outdoor painting project we planned but had to postpone due to the
unseasonable wet weather. We will do this sometime soon. We will keep you posted on the project.
We have been asked to help with the Vacation Bible School in July. The dates are July 18 – 22,
2016 and we are being asked to help with a science experiment. I will have more information at
the meeting on the 14th of June but check your calendars and help if you can.
Grace and Peace to all! Roger Eareckson

What are UMW Circles?
UMW Circles are subgroups of St.
Mark’s UMW. There are currently four
circles with another one starting in the
Fall, which meet on a monthly basis,
September through June. A circle has a
wonderful variety of women & a meeting
consists of starting with reciting our
Purpose, followed by a devotion, a short
business meeting (consisting of upcoming
events), a Bible Study or Program,
refreshments then ending with reciting
our Benediction. Three of the circles meet
during the day & one meets in the
evening to allow working women to be a
part. We have a list of needs for St.
Mark’s Village pantry we provide for as
well as other non-profit local programs.
The circles rotate holding birthday parties
at St. Mark’s Village as well as all help
serve receptions, Maundy Thursday & a
variety of other requests from St. Mark’s.

free to give me a call: Ruth Higgins 410924-4175

Music Notes
Weekly Chancel Choir rehearsals will end as of the last week of May. We will start
back up with our regular schedule in September.
~In the meantime~
Now is an excellent opportunity for you to join in on this summer’s special music. You
can sing with either the Jubilee Singers or our Summer Singers on the following Sundays:
June 19, July 24, or August 21
Jubilee practice will be held in the bell choir room at 7:30am, presentation at 8:15am
Summer Singers practice will be held in the choir room at 10:00am; presentation at
11am
This is an excellent time for you to meet some members of our choirs. Rehearsals are
held prior to the above services; we then present our music on that same day. An
added bonus is that there is no commitment whatsoever…just show up when you are
able! We are happy to have you join us and welcome you with open arms!
Special Music opportunities are now being booked for the 8:15 and 11am services during our summer season. Please contact me if you would like to present something for our very appreciative congregations.

Attention all members of St. Mark's: The Scholarship Committee needs your support! Please consider making a donation. The cost of colleges continues to rise
each year and St. Mark's can help the youth of our church by providing them with
a scholarship for college. We cannot do this without your financial support. When
making a donation, please specify that your donation should go to the Scholarship
Committee. Thank you for your continued generosity and support!

TALBOT MENTORS: Building community through mentoring relationships. When Phil Kirby
retired from an insurance company in Wheeling, WV in 1982, he and his wife Evelyn moved to Easton and
became members of St. Mark’s Church. Here in Talbot County, Mr. Kirby continued his life long endeavor of
community service. Among other involvements, he chaired the missions committee here at St. Mark’s and was
a co-founder & board member of Habitat for Humanity of T. C. and the founder & first president of Talbot
Mentors, Inc.
This latter endeavor was sparked when a 35-year old man approached him at an event and said, “Thank you.”
Mr. Kirby had no idea who this man was or why he was thanking him. The man said, “Twenty years ago, you
spent 15 minutes with me, just talking to me and giving me some advice, and that’s what changed my life.”
This served as the catalyst and concept for Mr. Kirby’s founding of Talbot Mentors in 1997.
For the next few years, Talbot Mentors was run by volunteers, focused on the basics of matching adults and
students. In time, the Board recognized a need for more programmatic support for the volunteers. Mr. Kirby
had laid the foundation for its subsequent development and, prior to his death in 2000, he set in motion the
hiring of Nancy Andrew as the first employee. And from there Talbot Mentors really began to take off.
Talbot Mentors initial purpose stated in its Articles of Incorporation was “To help students become good and
responsible citizens, with a sense of values and standards, prepared for work and citizenship in the 21st
century.” It strives to accomplish this by fostering partnerships to support and expand the power of one-onone mentoring relationships.
Natalie Costanzo is its fourth and current Executive Director and the program now employs two additional
support staff and has a volunteer board of over 12 directors. The program currently supports 70 mentor/
mentee relationships, however the need is much greater. Ms. Costanzo says: “Our partner, Talbot County
Public Schools, has identified 400 students in need of mentoring services in Talbot County.” To help the
program fill this gap, more adults are needed to volunteer their time as a mentor of a young person by meeting
one to two hours a week during the high risk, out of school hours for at least one year. What the mentor &
mentee do during their time together depends a lot on the interest of the mentee as well as finding things they
both enjoy and have fun doing.
A press release by Talbot Mentors in February told the story about a member of our church who became a
mentor to a youth 13 years ago. And even though the mentee is now a 25 year old adult, their close
relationship continues. In addition, the former mentee is now a mentor to a youth who attends Sunday school
at St. Mark’s Church.
There are many ways in addition to becoming a mentor to support the
mission of Talbot Mentors. For more information, check out their web
site at www.talbotmentors.org.

The school year has come to a close and we have had a fantastic second
half. Between the youth rally, our Easter egg service project, our weekly
meetings, and helping with the Sunday School picnic it has been a busy 5
months! While we are taking a break from our weekly meetings over the
summer we still have projects and get-togethers planned including our
missions trip! Here is some basic information about our trip and how you
can help…
Where: Northampton County, VA
What: home improvement projects to help make one or two homes
“warmer, safer and drier” (yes I stole that mission statement from Appalachia Service Project)
When: Tuesday morning August 2-Sunday afternoon/evening August 7
How can you help?
Pray for us and the families we will be interacting with
We will need to provide our own food for the week along with some
other expenses. Any donations of money or casseroles (please wait to
actually make the casserole until closer to the event…) would be
appreciated!
We need 2 Suburbans or Minivans with at least 5 usable seats each. We
will return them gassed up and shiny!
If God puts something on your heart to ask me about please let me know!

Great news on our Camp Pecometh/Riverview Retreat Center Pledge. A member of the
congregation has offered a 1 – 1 match for all gifts up to a match total of $3,000 to retire this
pledge. As I reported last month the Missions Committee has been managing this pledge and
we now sit at just under $6,300 and it’s everyone’s desire to pay this pledge off this year. I am
asking you to join me in making a special gift to Missions specifically for the Camp Pecometh/
Riverview Retreat Center Pledge. With the matching gift every dollar you give will be $2
towards retiring this pledge. It is important for the financial health of the church to complete
this pledge. So please take a moment and make a gift of any amount towards this pledge. You
can add it to your weekly giving—noting Camp Pecometh or by sending a check to the church
office
for

St. Mark’s to Present Popular Brown Bag Lecture
St. Mark’s United Methodist Church will present a “Brown Bag” lecture on June 22,
at noon at the church.
The speaker will be well-known and popular “Dr. Gil” Anderson, Minister of
Pastoral Visitation at the church. His topic will be “Preoccupation and Communication” and will focus on the many interruptions in our everyday lives and our preoccupation with life in general that interfere with our faith.
Our lives are very busy and we rush from one activity to another. How do we
have time to hear the quiet voice of God and His impact on our lives? The public
is invited. Beverages and dessert will be served – bring a brown bag lunch if desired.
See sign up sheet in the Gathering space.
Just a reminder that July Markings is the yearly Mission Report. These reports are not
mailed out but can be picked up at church and will be posted on our website.
