Endeavors - NIU College of Education
College of Education
Endeavors
Vol.7 /Spring 2008
Message from the Dean
I greatly appreciate the support, encouragement, and care that you
have given to the College of Education this year. Your support has
helped our College remain vibrant and resilient in its efforts to move
forward as a premier College of Education. As you will read in this
issue of Endeavors, our students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends
are truly amazing individuals who are all over the world, working to
improve their communities. Their passion for education is contagious,
and I have been energized and enlightened in my numerous meetings
with alumni and friends over the course of the year.
Lemuel W. Watson, Dean
This year has also brought tremendous transitions for the university and
the college. With a new dean, new leadership in four departments
and two new associate deans, we proceeded with a strategic plan
for the College and continued to prepare for our National Council for
Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) visit. I am very pleased
with the progress we have made this year and highly optimistic about
what our future holds. Visit www.cedu.niu.edu
u for more information
about our strategic plan and other initiatives.
This issue of Endeavors presents various stories about how NIU’s College of Education is changing
the region and the world. Our faculty continue to work to obtain funding to support their research and
outreach projects, some of which are highlighted in this issue. Each project reaffirms the College’s
unique role in researching important issues and then sharing the results with the public to influence
practice. As you’ll also see, the College is expanding its reputation as a valuable international partner
and is bringing the benefits of those partnerships directly back to our students.
Finally, we should all pause from our daily routines to give thanks for this wonderful life we have been
given. The February 14, 2008, shooting reminds us that life is so very fragile. As we remember our
losses and the families of those involved, we grieve deeply. But the many stories we have heard of
grace and courage and compassion in the aftermath of this event have given us hope, fed our souls,
and have made all of us so very proud to be a part of Northern Illinois University.
Finally, the rapid pace and the energy extended to lead a College of Education are tremendous. Yet, from
alumni gatherings to national board meetings, I am inspired by the stories I hear from so many of you.
I am humbled and honored to be part of the NIU family, and I look forward to meeting more of you.

Taking Care of School Business: Illinois ASBO
our leadership. Because of our affiliation with NIU, the
legislators knew us and welcomed our views on a variety
of issues and legislation related to education in Illinois.”
Soon, Jacoby was chairing the Illinois Education
Roundtable, a consortium of nineteen school leadership
associations and organizations representing over 13,000
school leaders and 230,000 teachers and other personnel.
He is also one of the principal contributors to the Burnham
Plan for World Class Education, which calls for sweeping
reform in school quality and accountability in Illinois. The
Plan addresses a number of issues related to accountability,
the quality and scope of education, and school funding
and finance. With Illinois ranked 48th in the nation in
terms of support for schools, the Burnham Plan seeks to
boost achievement and develop a new, permanent revenue
source for schools, providing a comprehensive solution to
Illinois’ ongoing school quality and educational funding
crises.
Michael Jacoby, Illinois ASBO
It has been said that in the business world,
everyone is paid in two coins: cash and
experience.
What’s next for the field? Jacoby says that schools will face
increasing calls for accountability and transparency. He
anticipates that Illinois ASBO will be deeply involved in
facilitating and helping schools analyze how and where
they are spending their money as well as how they stack
up with peer districts in terms of resource utilization and
environmental issues. ‹
The Illinois Association of School Business Officials
(ASBO) is concerned with both. Founded in 1952, Illinois
ASBO is an association devoted to the School Business
Management profession; those in this profession are most
often thought of as “budget people,” but in reality they
wear many different hats. Besides school finance, school
business officials are involved in personnel issues, risk
management, technology planning and transportation.
There are currently 2,160 members in Illinois ASBO.
About Illinois ASBO
Founded: 1952
Mission: The mission of the Illinois
Association of School Business Officials
is to provide its members and stakeholders a comprehensive range of
professional development activities
and services.
“Our role is three-fold,” says executive director Michael
Jacoby. “We provide professional development for our
members with over 100 seminars and conferences per
year, we act as a voice for our members in legislative
matters, and then we also develop and administer
programs for schools, such as the Illinois Energy
Consortium, the Illinois School District Liquid Asset Pool,
and the Procurement Card program, all of which provide
significant cost savings to districts through shared resources
and streamlined services.”
Membership: 2,160 members

Jacoby took the helm of Illinois ASBO in 2006, and one
of his first charges was to step up the organization’s role
in the policy arena. “Success was almost immediate,” says
Jacoby. “People wanted us at the table and appreciated

Finding Their VOICE
How do you measure the impact
of an idea?
of her personality that others outside of our family may
not see. It conveys an understanding of her, of how she
communicates, and of what she wants for the future.”
For Traci Van Laarhoven-Myers and Toni Van Laarhoven,
it is in their sister, Steffanie’s, reaction to a multimedia
presentation of music, video, pictures, and slides that
represent her likes, dislikes, needs, and dreams for the
future.
Empowering Students
As a vocational coordinator at Waubonsie Valley High
School, Van Laarhoven-Myers has assisted several students
in the district with preparing their presentations, and the
students’ responses have been “amazing.” “Personally,
I am excited to see the responses to the presentations,”
Van Laarhoven-Myers says. “I know how captivated and
enthralled Steffanie was when she watched the first draft
of her presentation, and I’m seeing the same reaction over
and over again in our students.”
Steffanie is a 46-year old woman who has “pretty
significant developmental disabilities” and cannot
communicate in traditional ways. Through Project
MY VOICE (Multimedia for Youth to Voice Outcomes
Individually Created for Empowerment), project directors
Toni and Traci, along with NIU Professor Jesse “Woody”
Johnson and graduate assistant Heather Johnson, have
given Steffanie and others with developmental disabilities
a “voice” for communicating who they are, what they like,
what they dislike, and what they want for the future.
Speech pathologist Danielle Kos and special education
teacher Katie Neary, who are part of the Multi-Needs
Team piloting the project at Neuqua Valley High School in
Naperville, Ill., are finding the same reactions with their
students.
“Watching Steffanie react to her presentation was so
amazing,” says Van Laarhoven, an associate professor
in the College of Education’s Department of Teaching
and Learning. “She laughed and wanted to see parts of
it over and over again. It really captures the subtleties
Through MY VOICE, Kos and Neary work with their
students to develop presentations that the students will
use at their Individualized Educational Program (IEP)
meetings. IEP meetings, which include the student and
his/her parents, teachers, case
manager, counselor, and related
service providers, are used to gauge
a student’s progress in meeting goals
as well as formulate new goals and
action steps for the future. Knowing the
student’s needs, wants, desires, etc., is
crucial in developing an effective IEP.
“MY VOICE really empowers
the students,” says Kos. “It helps
communicate all the dimensions of
their personalities. Their sense of pride
is evident – when they see their entire
presentation for the first time, their
faces just light up!”
“Because of MY VOICE,” says Neary,
“our students can participate more
fully in their IEP. The student is the
most important person in the room,
and their MY VOICE presentation
helps everyone involved in the IEP
understand what that student would
like to accomplish during their school
years and after.”

‘Phenomenal Support’ from College of Education
NIU students who are majoring in special education are
also a key part of the project.
Last fall, NIU students began working with 13 students with
special needs at Neuqua High School, 13 students from
Waubonsie Valley High School, and four students from the
STEPS program (the transition program in Indian Prairie
School District).
“The support and extra help that Toni, Traci, Woody,
Heather, and the students from NIU have provided has
been phenomenal,” says
Neary. “We could never
have accomplished all
this without them. They
thought of everything,
down to the smallest
detail. We have received
great support.”
“MY VOICE helps to eliminate some of the communication
barriers for our students,” says Kos. “It empowers them to
share their wants, needs, and desires, a right that everyone
deserves. MY VOICE helps them do just that.” ‹
Katie Neary and Danielle Kos
Multimedia is the Key
The idea for Project MY VOICE came about when Van
Laarhoven read and thought about other projects to help
individuals with developmental disabilities communicate
more effectively. The “Aha!” moment arrived when she
realized that “Multimedia was IT!” She approached her
sister, Traci, who has taught and worked with youth with
developmental disabilities for more than a decade, to
brainstorm the idea.
Multimedia for Youth to Voice Outcomes
Individually Created for Empowerment (MY VOICE)
Partners: NIU College of Education’s Department of
Teaching and Learning and Indian Prairie
School District #204 (Illinois)
Funding: $340,000, three-year grant from the Illinois
Council on Developmental Disabilities
Project Description: The project provides tool kits,
training materials and instruction for pre-service
teachers, in-service educators and parents to assist
youth with developmental disabilities between the ages
of 16-21 to create multimedia presentations that reflect
their dreams for the future. Through these presentations,
students communicate their needs and desires and are
able to participate more fully in their Individualized
Educational Program (IEP). The IEP provides a framework
for developing action plans to help them transition out of
the school environment and into the adult world.
“We started planning the project, and then the opportunity
to apply for grant funding came up. Everyone was excited
about participating, and we decided to go for it. All the
pieces of the project just fell into place.”
One of those pieces was receiving a three-year, $340,000
grant from the Illinois Council on Developmental Disabilities
to support the collaborative pilot project between Indian
Prairie School District 204 and NIU’s College of Education.
As a result, Van Laarhoven and her partners developed a
huge binder of materials to help assess a student’s needs in
eleven different life domains, such as communication, daily
living, education, employment, recreational interests, health
and safety, and interpersonal relationships. The grant also
provided funding for hardware, software, and multimedia
equipment for the school, as well as the specialized
training the teachers needed to develop the students’
presentations.

Impacting Practice and Policy
L D and Ruth G. Morgridge Endowed Chair Leads and Inspires
It began in Carbondale, Illinois, with a
group of deaf adolescents and an Apple IIe.
• Completing a third-year assessment of the College’s
Professional Development School and developing goals
to enhance its effectiveness
• Strengthening cross-departmental and interdisciplinary
faculty collaboration in school-based work with partner
districts
With a background in speech pathology and education,
Dr. Sharon Smaldino began working with socially and
emotionally disturbed, deaf adolescents in a residential
program.
• Enhancing understanding of different learning styles
and teaching techniques through colloquiums and
symposiums featuring nationally recognized experts.
“I realized immediately that I was in over my head,”
she says. Undaunted, Smaldino enrolled in a doctoral
program, just as the potential for technology as a
classroom tool was accelerating. One morning, she lugged
her PC (this was before laptops!) into her classroom of
“ornery” adolescent students. They were fascinated.
“Sharon clearly embodies the most important qualities
in an endowed chair,” says Lemuel W. Watson, Dean of
the NIU College of Education. “An endowed position is
reserved for that professor who has a unique combination
of extraordinary scholarship, outstanding service, and
excellent teaching skills; Sharon is that rare individual.
We are indeed indebted to the Morgridge family, whose
generosity has allowed us to attract and retain someone of
her caliber.”
So, she brought it back the next day. And the next. Every
day thereafter, she carried the heavy components from
home to school and back again.
Hooked on Technology
Her heavy lifting paid off. “I found the hook,” she says.
“Technology was what captured their attention and made
them want to study.” Like her students, Smaldino became
hooked on technology for teaching, and that has been her
research focus ever since.
Endowed Chair Makes the Difference
An endowed chair is the key to attracting and retaining
outstanding senior faculty. Those who establish endowed
chairs are forever linked with the achievements of the
faculty who hold the position. Earnings from endowed
funds support salaries and help develop new courses,
conduct collaborative research, and initiate international
partnerships and scholarship. Faculty who hold chairs are
models of intellectual engagement and commitment and
are highly regarded in their fields.
As NIU’s LD and Ruth G. Morgridge Chair in Teacher
Education and Preparation, Smaldino focuses on the
integration of technology into learning. She is not only
exploring ways in which teachers use technology, but
is also delving into how they make decisions about its
use. She is investigating how teachers’ attitudes and
approaches change as they become more comfortable
with using technology.
In addition to holding several national offices, Smaldino
has maintained a personal scholarship agenda related
to teacher education, technology and partnerships. She
has published several articles and co-authored two books:
Instructional Technology and Media for Learning (9th ed.)
and Teaching and Learning at a Distance: Foundations of
Distance Education (4th ed.).
“I want to make it fun for everyone,” she says. “I want
them to see the value of technology and to enjoy what they
do with it. Technology should not be work; it should make
work easier and more productive.”
Scholarship and Service
“Having this position allows me to pursue my research
agenda while keeping me connected to students and
colleagues,” she says. “I feel so very fortunate to have this
opportunity.” ‹
Smaldino’s passion and vision are best illustrated in what
she has accomplished during her tenure as Morgridge
Chair, which includes:
• Enhancing technology use and approaches to teaching
in nine school districts by leading the College’s SchoolUniversity Partnership initiative
• Expanding the use of technology by College of
Education faculty through workshops and courses on
the effective use of newer technology tools

Interactive Illinois Report Card
Web tool provides side-by-side comparisons
of schools’ progress and compliance.
The IIRC site allows for comparison in any of a variety of
categories, including students test performance, per-pupil
spending, ethnic and racial diversity, enrollment, teacher
qualifications, average salaries and levels of tax support.
Users can choose up to 15 schools for comparison over a
multi-year period.
Confused about the ISAT or PSAE? Wondering if your
child’s school is making adequate progress according to
“No Child Left Behind?” Curious about which schools are
on the Illinois Honor Roll?
“This is a marvelous tool for parents and educators
alike,” says Lemuel W. Watson, Dean of the NIU College
of Education. “At a time when increasing emphasis is
placed on accountability, data-driven decision making,
and evaluation, the IIRC provides the information we need
to ensure high standards and positive outcomes in the
classroom. It is a comprehensive and easy-to-use data base
that helps teachers and administrators at all levels improve
curriculum and instruction.” ‹
Parents, teachers and administrators, and the public at
large can find answers to these questions and many more
on the web at the Illinois Interactive Report Card (IIRC)
site: http://iirc.niu.edu. Created by researchers at NIU
in partnership with the Illinois State Board of Education,
IIRC offers an up to date, richly dynamic, and interactive
resource that presents a vast array of information on Illinois
schools and their students’ performance in a “one stop,”
easily navigated site.
Unique Tool for
Comparison
One of the most helpful aspects
of the site is that it allows users
to compare schools side-by-side,
based on data that they select.
“School-to-school comparisons
are a very powerful way to
permit teachers and parents
to identify exemplary schools
and see what they’re doing
right,” says project director
Harvey Smith, Assistant Chair
in NIU’s history department.
“There are a number of school
assessment Web resources, but
what makes the IIRC unique is
collaboration with the schools
and educators to design a very
clear and useful data base
that helps teachers and school
administrators improve their
classroom instruction.”

Impacting Practice and Policy
China
leader delegation visits, joint graduate programming,
and research projects, NIU has established strong
relationships with the University of Helsinki and the
University of Tampere in Finland. Both Niemi and Ilsley
received prestigious Fulbright Fellowships to pursue
work in Finland. As a result, many College of Education
faculty have visited the country in recent years, producing
research publications, joint teaching endeavors and
collaborative programs and grant applications. NIU and
Finnish universities stand at the forefront of online course
development.
The Department of
Counseling, Adult
and Higher Education
has a rich history of
collaboration with China,
dating to 1986, when
a formal agreement providing for faculty and student
exchanges was established. Shortly after, NIU and the
Shanghai Second Institute of Education (SSIE) signed the
first of several five-year agreements for such exchanges.
Ilsley, who researches comparative aspects of civil society
in Finland, China, and the U.S., believes the Finnish
connection is vital to NIU and beyond. “By many accounts,
the most successful education system in the world is found
in Finland,” he says. “Finnish citizens are among the best
educated, possess the greatest appetite for reading, they
speak the greatest number of languages, and, simply put,
have the most civil society on earth. We would do well to
develop a better understanding of their systems and their
culture.”
In the coming years, exchanges of books, resources,
students and faculty took place, along with the first of
many study abroad trips to China. SSIE staff translated
several adult education publications into Chinese, and
NIU College of Education faculty co-authored with SSIE
faculty scholarly manuscripts on adult education in China.
In 1991, NIU hosted the first NIU/SSIE joint conference
with attendees from seven countries. Over time, numerous
students, faculty, and administrators have visited SSIE
to study, teach, and strengthen the international bond
between these diverse institutions and countries.
Kenya
Global Reach, Global Impact
The College of Education and its students
have benefited tremendously from our faculty’s
international work and research. Following
are brief descriptions of a few of the College’s
international partnerships:
A number of faculty members in the Department of
Teaching and Learning (TLRN) are continuing their work in
Kenya, concentrated in Mwala, a small village 90 miles
southeast of Nairobi. Led by TLRN professor and Kenya
native Dr. Moses Mutuku
u and his colleagues, Dr. Maylan
Dunn-Kenney
y and Dr. C. Sheldon Woods, the group has
been involved in various initiatives in this rural village,
including constructing water dams and tanks, building a
community library, and instructing villagers regarding the
important role of family in a child’s education. They also
worked with upper primary schools on disease prevention
and trained teachers on the latest research in early
childhood and elementary education and techniques for
applying it to the classroom. The longer-term project goal is
to influence the Kenyan government in the development of
educational opportunities for rural areas.
That tradition continues today, with Dean Lemuel Watson
and Department of Counseling, Adult and Higher
Education (CAHE) faculty members Dr. Gene Roth and Dr.
Wei Hung traveling to China in October 2007 to meet
with leaders at several universities and institutes. A number
of CoE doctoral students accompanied them, presenting
research papers at the Asian Chapter Conference of the
Academy of Human Resource Development in Beijing
and to network with their Chinese peers. International
experiences such as these build international understanding
and demonstrate the importance of global thinking in
regards to research agendas.
Sri Lanka and India
Dr. Laurel Jeriss of the Department of Counseling, Adult
and Higher Education is leading an effort focusing on
poverty alleviation and capacity building in Sri Lanka and
India. Developed in 2002, Project GROW (Grassroots
Organizing by Women) is a collaborative effort involving
the College of Education, NIU’s International Training
Office, and the office of University Resources for Women

Presidential Teaching Professor
The projects goals are to build the capacities of NGO
leaders, to alleviate poverty, and to strengthen women’s
participation in grassroots democracy. In December 2007,
Jeris led a student study group that visited and interacted
with community development leaders, higher education
faculty, and NGO partners to observe post-tsunami recover
work and to develop a better understanding of the multiethnic contexts of both countries. This groundbreaking
work, which emphasizes empowerment for responsible and
active participation by women in democratic processes, is
leveraging significant resources, expertise, creativity, and
new technology. All partners envision that the project will
have a tremendous multiplier effect on the communities and
the regions.

Ki-Hyung Hong, a well-known South Korean scholar, in
planning an international congress hosted by Chung-Ang
University in Seoul. Several NIU faculty members presented
papers at the congress. In 1997, NIU returned the favor
by hosting a study abroad program of 15 students from the
university. Alumnus Kyung Hi Kim, who helped organize
the program, went on to become a professor at Kyungnam
University, and brought a study group of about 20 students
to NIU in 2001. A collaborative study aboard agreement
between NIU and Kyungnam University was formalized in
November of 2002 in Korea, with then-Provost Ivan Legg
and Dr. Gene Roth (CAHE) attending the signing ceremony.
In 2005, Tollerud was a member of the committee that
developed the Social/Emotional Learning Standards that
are now part of the Illinois School Code. She has been
an outspoken advocate for children’s rights and welfare,
authoring legislation and conducting workshops on such
issues as gender equity, youth and violence, and eating
disorders.
Tollerud’s honors include the American School Counselor
Association’s 2001 Advocate of the Year Award, the 2006
Illinois Mental Health Counselors Distinguished Service
Award and the 1996 Illinois Counseling Association
Counselor of the Year.
Numerous visiting professors and doctoral students from
Korea have come to NIU as a result of these relationships.
During a March 2008 trip to Korea, Dean Lemuel Watson
and Dr. Gene Roth visited friends and colleagues at
Kyungnam University and Chung-Ang University. They
also met with several NIU College of Education alumni,
including Hae Young Lee, Han Sik Shim, Kyung-Hi Kim
and Min Byoung Chul. Colonel Hyo Sun Park, a doctoral
student at Chung-Ang University, will be a visiting scholar
in the College’s Adult and Higher Education program in fall
2008. ‹
Her work at the NIU Center for Child Welfare and Education
includes strengthening services to post-secondary and
college students and working with teachers, counselors and
social workers to improve outcomes for wards of the state.
The NIU Presidential Teaching Professorships were
established in 1991 to recognize faculty who have
demonstrated their commitment to and success in the
many activities associated with outstanding teaching. The
award provides budgetary support and release time for
the enhancement of teaching skills. Following the fouryear fellowship period, the recipient is a permanently
designated Distinguished Teaching Professor. ‹

Professors “Chronicle” Their Journey to Tenure
To assistant professors Joseph Flynn, Drew Kemp, and
Samara Madrid, “being a professor is being part of the
dialogue” – literally. Through a series of “First Person”
articles for the Chronicle of Higher Education, Flynn, Kemp
and Madrid are sharing their diverse perspectives as new
faculty members in the college’s department of teaching
and learning. Their first column, “On-the-Job Training,”
appeared in the February 1st issue of the Chronicle,
followed quickly by their observations about the campus
shooting in the Chronicle’s February 29th issue. Columns
will run on a periodic basis through their tenure decision.
It takes . . . a deep commitment
to the profession. – Samara Madrid
Kemp came up with the idea for the column. He noticed
that the Chronicle
e always had interesting articles about
conferences, careers, tenure, and other higher education
issues, but lacked articles geared toward new faculty
members. On an impulse, he called the editors and pitched
the idea for a column written about – and by – new faculty.
He was thrilled when the Chronicle
e accepted the proposal.
The process of collaborating on a column has worked very
well. “We fell right into it,” Madrid says. “We don’t really
write together that much. We decide on a common theme,
write separately, and then pull [our pieces] together to
make sure we are in fact individual
and not repetitive. We really do try
to ‘check’ our egos and accept that
we are all just trying to help each
other be better writers and make
a stronger column.”
In the end, we must all shake the sand
from our sandals and journey on.
– Joseph Flynn
to be a researcher, a teacher, a mentor, an adviser, a
member of the academic community.”
Entering the professoriate, they say, brought a mix of
emotions: excitement, fear, surprise, anticipation, and
anxiety, all wrapped in the thrill of knowing that their years
of study and hard work had paid off. But what does it
mean to be a part of that community? Will I be successful
in academe? Can I make the cut?? Flynn, Kemp and Madrid
explore these and other questions as they work toward
becoming tenured professors.
But, the answers don’t come easily, and the process can be
challenging. And, as Madrid wisely notes, “It takes daily
practice, discipline, sweat, tears, and most of all, a deep
commitment to the profession.”
It is that commitment that fuels these fine young professors
whose ambition and promise and professionalism make for
inspiring reading. ‹
To follow along on Flynn, Kemp and Madrid’s journey, go
to: www.chronicle.com and enter one of their names in the
“search” box.
The column is enriched by the writers’
different backgrounds along the lines
of gender, race, regional perspective,
etc. Their observations are authentic,
insightful, and at times, painfully
honest: “Is it possible to be filled
with confidence and fear at the same
time?” writes Kemp. “I have no idea
where the fear comes from. Perhaps it
is because I am learning to become a
professor, and all that it entails, and
more than I imagined. I am learning

Beyond the Classroom: Student Successes
Diversifying Higher Education Faculty in Illinois
Nicholas Concepcion was at a turning point. He had lost
his job after the “dot com” implosion and wanted to work
in higher education. To do so, he would need a master’s
degree, which meant more schooling and more debt.
He had almost decided to forego the career change when
he learned about the Diversifying Higher Education Faculty
in Illinois (DFI) program at NIU. The statewide initiative
is designed to encourage people of color to pursue
advanced degrees and positions in higher education at
state institutions. Concepcion applied, was accepted, and
earned his master’s degree in 2006.
NIU has 15 DFI fellows enrolled in a variety of graduate
programs. Brandon Taylor, assistant professor of
instructional design and technology at Chicago State
University, is a DFI fellow in NIU’s College of Education.
Taylor says that the fellowship made a huge impact on his
education and career path.
“It was a very good program,” he says. “I met the most
outstanding people, networked with senior faculty and
administrators, and received a great education. It was a
very positive experience for me.”
“Being a DFI fellow has meant a great deal to me,” he
says. “Not only has the fellowship provided the needed
financial support to pursue my doctorate degree in
instructional technology, but it also provided me with
access to professional development, mentoring, and
networking.” Taylor plans to publish a book within the next
five years; his longer-term goals are to become a premier
authority in his field and to hold the office of university
president.
Highly Competitive Fellowships
Connections and Opportunities
While students of color have made great strides in higher
education in the last decade, progress in increasing
the number of faculty of color has been much slower.
According to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data
System, the number of underrepresented minority faculty
at four-year institutions grew by only 3.8% nationwide
between 1995 and 2005.
Angie Stuckey and her daughter, Tracey Stuckey-Mickell,
are both DFI fellows. Stuckey is working on her Ed.D. in
the Department of Literacy Education and Stuckey-Mickell
is pursuing her Ed.D. in the Department of Educational
Technology, Research and Assessment. Both are grateful for
the mentoring, encouragement and financial support they
have received.
Recognizing the impact of a diversified professoriate,
the Illinois General Assembly created the DFI program
in 2004. Its goals are to encourage minority students to
complete graduate studies, pursue research agendas and
publish, with the larger purpose of enhancing the diversity
of faculty and professional staff at Illinois colleges and
universities. Only full-time students with demonstrated
financial need receive these highly competitive fellowships,
and recipients must agree to seek and accept a position in
an Illinois educational institution.
Stuckey says that the best thing “is the ‘belongingness’
you feel from being a part of a group of people with
like minds.” Her long-term goals include establishing
a non-profit group to serve the educational needs of
underprepared adolescents.
(L-R) Angie Stuckey, Tracey Stuckey-Mickell, Quincy
Paden, LaMetra Curry, and Tammy Holmes
Stuckey-Mickell points to the annual conference as
especially helpful. “The conference gives us a chance to
bond with developing scholars and successful professionals
in higher education,” she says. “I have had the opportunity
to meet with others who were facing obstacles similar to
mine.” Her studies and networking have paid off: In June,
Stuckey-Mickell will begin her position as Director of Nontraditional Learning at Moraine Valley Community College.
The link to employment opportunities and contacts is key, says
DFI fellow Tammy Holmes. “DFI has provided opportunities
that I would otherwise not have been able to access,” she
says. Quincy Paden, another DFI fellow, agrees, noting that
the program has made a tremendous difference in his life.
“Being selected for such a competitive program is one of
the best things that has happened to me. DFI has afforded
me the financial freedom to fulfill my educational dreams
while simultaneously realizing my life goals.” ‹

Alumni News and Events
A Professor Who Changed My Life by Thomas L. Nolan, Jr.
Being recently asked which
professor influenced me the most,
or made the biggest difference in
my NIU experience, I reviewed
some important events such as the
dissertation defense and graduation.
Part of the reason I wanted to be
a full-time graduate student was
the unique experience of being on
campus: the people you meet, the
meetings you can participate in, and
the seminars you attend.
Tom Nolan
Bob kept me on task, asked the
tough questions so my dissertation
would read well, and made certain
my committee was up to date and
that I was prepared for them. In
addition, Bob Mason supported
each of his graduates when they
moved on to the next phase of their
life. He frequently would be on the
phone with prospective employers
extolling the virtues of his students.
It worked – they got jobs.
Robert Mason
I learned from Bob Mason that there
is a system, and it exists for a reason. He encouraged
me to know the system, and then make it work for me. In
the grand scheme of things, all of these experiences were
invaluable lessons. ‹
My epiphany came with the
selection of an adviser. As the deadline approached, I
went to a meeting where refreshments would be served
following the session so students could meet and chat with
some professors. This is when I met Prof. Robert C. Mason.
I asked him if he would consider being my adviser, and
he said: “Not without your checking with other students
about how I work and what I expect.” After chatting with a
number of his past and then-current advisees, I was certain
Bob Mason was the right adviser for me.

Parker Receives Alyce Kramer Marcus Outstanding Educator Award
The College of Education is pleased to announce that
Dr. Jenny Parker, associate professor in the Department
of Kinesiology and Physical Education (KNPE), has
received the first Alyce Kramer Marcus Outstanding
Educator Award. The award recognizes a professor who
has influenced students, who instills a love of learning
in her students, and who demonstrates a passion for
teaching. The award was established by NIU alumnus
Joyce Marcus, to honor her mother’s love of learning and
special gift for teaching. Joyce and her mother, Alyce,
look forward to meeting Dr. Parker.
A student favorite since arriving at NIU in 1995, Parker
is known for teaching extended (none less than three
hours) classes with a pedagogy focus that provides
real-world experiences and demand active learning.
She teaches both within and outside of the traditional
classroom, serving as a faculty advisor for TEACH
House since 2003, where she shares her expertise to
help residents explore a variety of teaching issues. For one
activity, Dr. Parker developed “Games in the Classroom,”
in which she helped students explore ways to make
learning fun and engaging while avoiding some of the
pitfalls of this type of activity.
Jenny Parker, KNPE
She also engages students
in community service and
fundraising activities; she
regularly incorporates
a class project to raise
money for a community
group or cause. Her
students have held fun runs
and bowling nights and
have sent care packages
to military service
personnel. Students take
the lead in all aspects of
planning, developing, and
implementing the projects,
with Dr. Parker serving as
mentor and advisor.
Students rave about Dr. Parker and her teaching abilities,
saying,
•
Alyce Kramer Marcus and Joyce Marcus
•
“Dr. Parker expects a lot, and she has a way of getting
your best. Don’t take her class unless you’re ready to
grow, because she’ll make you think. And, she’ll make
you stretch outside your comfort zone.”
•
“I now try to set my standards to her level. To be able
to teach in the creative, caring and educating manner
that she taught me will be my unending goal.”
•
“You can just tell by the way she teaches her classes
that she loves teaching. She has a way about her that
makes learning fun and understandable.”
•
“She is not just my teacher, but my friend, and most of
all, a person I look up to.”
In all areas of teaching, Dr. Jenny Parker goes well above
and beyond what might be expected. She provides
students with open avenues to reach her and spends
considerable time working with students who are having
difficulties. Dr. Parker has devoted her professional life to
the mentoring of future physical education and kinesiology
teachers and in so doing has become a tremendous role
model for her colleagues, as well.
The College of Education extends sincere congratulations
to Dr. Jenny Parker on being selected to receive the Alyce
Kramer Marcus Outstanding Educator Award. ‹
“Her energy while teaching and for teaching is
contagious.”

Forward, Together Forward
In the days following February 14th, the
same words of hope began to crop up on
posters, banners, and marquees on the NIU
campus and throughout the community:
“Forward, Together Forward.”
Loyal NIU alumni immediately recognized these words
from the Huskie Fight Song, written in 1961 by Dr. Francis
Stroup, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Kinesiology
and Physical Education.
Stroup, 98, said he early
on “cultivated a hobby
of song writing with a
particular interest in college
songs.” Ten years after
graduating from North
Texas State University, he
submitted an entry for his
alma mater’s contest to
find a fight song, and was
surprised to learn that he
had won.
It remains the university’s
song yet today.
Stroup went on to compose
songs for Drake University,
Francis J. Stroup
the University of Wyoming
and the University of
Chicago. His most popular ones include “Fight, North
Texas,” and the Huskie Fight Song.
Stroup and his wife, Marjorie, came to NIU in 1959, when
he accepted a position as a physical education professor.
The editor for the campus newspaper, the Northern Star,
put out a call for an updated version of NIU’s fight song.
Stroup listened to the tune several times, then applied
his three-step technique (“Good songs must be easy to
say, easy to sing, and easy to remember”) and began
writing. The result was the “Huskie Fight Song,” which was
officially adopted on April 30, 1963. It has been played
and sung at countless athletic and alumni events in the 45
years since.
Stroup retired from NIU in 1974. As a public school
teacher, an Academic Instructor in the U.S. Air Force, and
a college professor, he enjoyed a teaching career that
lasted forty-five years. While at Southern State, he directed
studies funded by the Ford Foundation and the U.S.
Department of Education. Stroup is the author of two books
and wrote a number of articles for professional journals.
He was the first swimming coach at NIU and has been
inducted in the Athletic Hall of Fame at both North Texas
and NIU.
“Forward, Together Forward” is also a fitting motto for
Stroup’s relationship with fellow Professor Emeritus in the
Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education, Dr.
J. Hubert Dunn. Dunn joined NIU just three years after
Stroup, in 1962, after serving fifteen years at Washington
Sate University as a
physical education
teacher and gymnastics
coach; he retired from
NIU in 1986. A World
War II veteran, Dunn
participated in the D-Day
invasions of Northern
France (Normandy) and
Southern France as a
Communications Officer
aboard the USS Shubrick
(destroyer).
Dunn’s awards are
numerous, including the
honor of being the first
J. Hubert Dunn
faculty member in the
College of Education
to receive NIU’s Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching
Award. He has been inducted into several Halls of Fame,
including those of USA Gymnastics, Washington State
University Athletics, and his beloved NIU Athletics.
As colleagues, Stroup and Dunn not only taught and
conducted research together, they also developed a deep
friendship that continues to this day. That relationship
led to their establishing the Stroup-Dunn Scholarship for
graduate students in the department who are specializing
in Biomechanics or Exercise Physiology. The endowment is
a fitting tribute to their lasting friendship, their commitment
to education, and their deeply held love for NIU. ‹

Dr. M. Joan Popp
Dr. Popp retired from the
Department of Physical
Education at NIU in August
of 1995, after thirty-six
years of service. A native
of Middletown, Ohio,
she taught at Capital
University (Bexley, OH),
and Valparaiso University
before coming to NIU. Her
education includes a B.S. in
physical education/dance
and zoology from Miami
(OH) University, an M.A.
M. Joan Popp
from Ohio State University,
and a Ph.D. from the
University of Iowa, with an emphasis in body mechanics
and kinesiology.
At NIU, Dr. Popp not only taught classes, but also served
on numerous committees, including the department and
college curriculum and personnel committees, the University
Academic Planning Committee, the University Council, and
the Faculty Senate. She was president of the NIU Faculty Club
and the Organization for Academic Women’s Equality. Dr.
Popp held offices with many state and regional organizations,
including the Northern District of the Illinois Association
of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; the
Illinois Association for Professional Preparation in Health,
Physical Education and Recreation; and the Midwest
Association for College and University Physical Education.
She received the Life Member Award from Delta Psi Kappa

award from the Northern District of Illinois Association of
Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; and the
Honor Fellow Award, which is the highest honor bestowed
by the Illinois Association of Health, Physical Education,
Recreation and Dance.
Dr. Popp’s philanthropy resulted from her own experience.
She worked for a year after graduating from high school
before attending college, and also worked at the university
part-time and every summer to be able to afford college
expenses. She knows how hard it is to work and keep up
with academics, so she established the Dr. M. Joan Popp
Endowed Scholarship to assist female students majoring in
physical education, kinesiology or athletic training.
“I consider it an honor to be able to help deserving
students through this scholarship fund,” she says. “NIU has
meant so much to me, and it has been my great privilege
to be associated with this fine university.”
In addition to her endowed scholarship, Dr. Popp has also
established a charitable gift annuity, the proceeds from
which will be added to her scholarship fund in the future. ‹
Dr. J. Hubert Dunn
Dr. Dunn provided 24 years of dedicated service to NIU
before retiring in 1986. He has received numerous honors,
including NIU’s Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching
Award, and has been inducted into the USA Gymnastics
Hall of Fame, the Washington State University Athletics
Hall of Fame, and the Northern Illinois University Athletics
Hall of Fame. With his colleague in the Department of
Kinesiology and Physical Education, Dr. Francis Stroup, he
established the Stroup-Dunn Scholarship, an endowment
to support graduate students specializing in Biomechanics
or Exercise Physiology. (Read more about Dr. Dunn on the
previous page.) ‹
Dr. Francis J. Stroup
Best-known as the author of the lyrics to NIU’s fight song,
“Forward, Together Forward,” Dr. Stroup provided fifteen
years of service to NIU before retiring in 1974. His fortyfive year teaching career ran the full spectrum, from public
school teacher to academic instructor for the U.S. Air
Force to college professor. Dr. Stroup has authored two
books and has been inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame
at North Texas State University and at Northern Illinois
University. With his friend and fellow KNPE professor,
Dr. J. Hubert Dunn,
he established

Friend of the College Awards
Dennis and Patricia Gurney
If you have attended an NIU or College of Education event, it is highly likely that you
have met Pat and Dennis Gurney. Over the years, this “Double Huskie” couple (both
graduates of the College of Education) have maintained strong ties to their alma mater,
attending athletic events, alumni association gatherings, helping to host College of
Education events, and volunteering their services for the college’s Alumni Council
Board. Pat retired from teaching at Laidlaw School in 2001, and Dennis retired in
2002 after serving as a teacher, associate principal, and principal at various schools in
Tinley Park.
Dennis and Pat Gurney
This “dynamic duo” has hosted several alumni events at their home in Chicago, and
most recently hosted a gathering of college alumni in the Palm Springs/Palm Desert
area. Pat and Dennis have volunteered countless hours at College-sponsored events,
as well, greeting our newest alumni at the College’s post-commencement receptions
and welcoming seasoned alums back to campus at the College’s Homecoming Tent
festivities. For their continued dedication and unselfish service, the College of Education
recognizes Dennis and Pat Gurney as true “Friends of the College.” ‹
Casey’s General Store of DeKalb, Illinois
In preparing for students to return to campus after the tragedy of February 14th, the College
of Education developed the idea of providing “food, beverages and friendly faces” at
Hospitality Tables in five locations to welcome the students back to class. Calls went out
to local businesses and restaurants, asking for donated items. When Tammy Fraedrich,
manager of Casey’s General Store of DeKalb, received a phone call asking Casey’s to
donate, she responded enthusiastically.
Casey’s not only provided food and beverages, but they also generously volunteered to help
host the hospitality tables. Regional Manager Debbie Faber, along with several Casey’s
employees, helped to stock tables, hand out food and beverages, and offered a warm
welcome to the returning students. Huskie Ribbon cookies and Red and Black doughnuts
created by Sandi Jones were especially appreciated by all. The volunteers’ warmth and
kindness was infectious, helping to ease the students’ transition back to campus. The generous spirit of Casey’s General
Store and its employees was an unexpected and wonderful surprise – and one that was greatly appreciated. Their service
and commitment to the College of Education truly exemplifies what it means to be a “Friend of the College.”‹

Our Donors, Our Future
Julianna Gehant Memorial
Scholarship
Julianna Gehant Memorial
Scholarship Contributors List
Contributions as of May 15, 2008.
Julianna Gehantt loved children,
country music, and ballroom
dancing. Most of all, she loved
her tight-knit family and her
homeland.

While in high school, Julianna
discovered her artistic side,
participating in theater and
making a portrait of her mother
as a Christmas gift. More
recently, one of her favorite
pastimes was watching “Dancing with the Stars” with her
mother; in fact, Julianna liked the program so much that
she enrolled in a ballroom dancing class. That was typical
of Julianna, who is described as a “go-getter” who pursued
her goal of teaching with a keen enthusiasm.

Richard and Holly Larson
Before losing her life in the NIU campus shooting on
February 14, 2008, Julianna was an active member of
the NIU Veterans Club and a dean’s list student majoring
in elementary education in the College of Education.
She planned to teach second grade because she loved
the innocence and creativity of that age. Family and
friends describe her as smart, kind, conscientious, and
courageous. She was a bright and highly motivated student
who lit up a room with her smile and her positive attitude.
She had a great sense of humor and an abiding love for
children.
Julianna served her country proudly for thirteen years
and one month in the U.S. Army and the Army Reserves.
She had joined the military right after high school and
spent much of her young adult years traveling the world
as part of an engineering unit. The 32-year-old soldier
was promoted to Sergeant First Class (E-7) during the
November 2007 board and had served tours of duty in
Bosnia, Tonga, and Thailand, where she helped to build
barracks and schools. Her military honors were extensive,
and her experiences as a soldier influenced her career
path. She took classes at military bases around the world
and looked forward to the day when she would lead her
own second-grade classroom. She was an outstanding
leader, and had recently been selected to be one of only
six instructors to teach for the military in Oahu during July
and August of 2008.
This scholarship is established to celebrate the life, the
values, and the indomitable spirit of Julianna Gehant.
