He later moved to Chaudiere in Quebec when he was three. Willard never went to school – until grade 9 - he was home schooled. 10 20 Zoom in – Pan down http://www.science.ca/scientists/scientistprofile.p hp?pID=129 http://www.science.ca/scientists/scientistprofile.p hp?pID=129 At grade 9 Willard Boyle went to 15 the well known school of Lower Canada College. Due to his home schooling Willard was behind on writing but very advanced in reading because of the reading his mother made him do. 35 http://www.acsl.org/acsl/0102/allstar/photos/LCC.jpg http://www.science.ca/scientists/scientistprofile.p hp?pID=129 After completing high school at LCC he went to the Navy to fight in WWII but he felt sick on boats so he joined the Fleet Air Arm of the Navy. 10 Zoom in Zoom in 45 http://www.science.ca/scientists/scientistprofile.p hp?pID=129 http://forum.apaninfo.net/Fall02/jpeg/rimpac31.jpg Pan up – Zoom in 15 1:00 Willard Boyle – Scientific Life 5 1:05 None Three years after university Willard Boyle joined Bell Laboratories. He worked his way up the company and he eventually became the Executive Director of a part of Bell Labs. 12 1:17 Pan across Willard Boyle finished his flight training course but WWII was finished before he fought in the air. After the war Boyle went to McGill to get a PhD in physics which he completed in 1950. http://www.science.ca/scientists/scientistprofile.p hp?pID=129 http://edgeofspace.net/pages/mcgill-campus.jpg http://inventors.about.com/od/cstartinventions/a/ CCD.htm http://www.ieee-virtualmuseum.org/media/eJuG1JGwLdWy.jpg During the sixties Willard Boyle went to NASA to find a place that which Apollo could land on the moon. After NASA Willard went back to Bell Labs. 11 Zoom in – Pan across 1:28 http://inventors.about.com/od/cstartinventions/a/ CCD.htm http://www.cbsnews.com/images/2006/04/10/im ageLA10904102108.jpg In 1967 the scientist who would invent bubble memory arrived at Bell Labs, Andrew Bobeck. This man’s invention became the inspiration for the CCD chip. 11 Pan across 1:39 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bubble_memory http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Bubble_Mem ory.jpg 11 Two years later Willard Boyle and George Smith invented the CCD chip after an hour brainstorming. This device was made for storing data originally and later became used for digital imaging. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chargecoupled_device 1:50 Zoom in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:CCD.jpg One year after this incredible break through for digital imaging the CCD chip took live images from cameras. 6 1:56 Zoom in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chargecoupled_device http://www.belllabs.com/news/1999/september/20/86300253.jpeg Willard Boyle – After Science 5 2:01 None After Boyle’s eventful life he went on to contribute to many inventions and receive numerous awards. 7 2:08 Pan up – Zoom ine http://www.science.ca/scientists/scientistprofile.p hp?pID=129 http://www.inventions.com/logos/inventions.com .jpg The awards Boyle and Smith won relatively soon afterwards were the Franklin Institute’s Stuart Ballantine Medal in 1973 and the year later the Morris Liebmann Award for the CCD. 14 Zoom in 2:22 http://www.science.ca/scientists/scientistprofile.p hp?pID=129 http://www.quesabesde.com/images/imagenes/Ni kon%20D70%20CCD.jpg A big milestone achieved using the CCD chip was the first digital camcorder that was made by Sony in 1983. 8 2:30 Pan across – Zoom in http://www.answers.com/topic/camcorder http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Sony_bmc10 0p.jpg It was not until 1994 when cameras could be connected to computers and be used efficiently. 6 Zoom in 2:36 http://digicam.kameradigital.com/digital_camera_history.php http://homepage.mac.com/cameradecollection/ot hers/Images/6.jpg 1995 was a year when digital cameras got a huge benefit over the film; they had small LDC screens fitted to it to view pictures. 8 http://digicam.kameradigital.com/digital_camera_history.php Probably one of the most important CCD uses in space was making the Hubble Space Telescope in 1990 use a CCD to capture all its images. In January 2006 they won the Charles Draper Prize and got 500,000$ to split. 14 3:08 Pan across – Zoom in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chargecoupled_device http://www.nasm.si.edu/research/aero/trophy/TR OPHYIMAGE/draper_prize.jpg Credits 3 3:11 None
