At grade 9 Willard Boyle went to 15
the well known school of Lower
Canada College. Due to his
home schooling Willard was
behind on writing but very
advanced in reading because of
the reading his mother made him
do.

After completing high school at
LCC he went to the Navy to fight
in WWII but he felt sick on boats
so he joined the Fleet Air Arm of
the Navy.

Three years after university
Willard Boyle joined Bell
Laboratories. He worked his
way up the company and he
eventually became the Executive
Director of a part of Bell Labs.

Willard Boyle finished his flight
training course but WWII was
finished before he fought in the
air. After the war Boyle went to
McGill to get a PhD in physics
which he completed in 1950.

During the sixties Willard Boyle
went to NASA to find a place
that which Apollo could land on
the moon. After NASA Willard
went back to Bell Labs.

In 1967 the scientist who would
invent bubble memory arrived at
Bell Labs, Andrew Bobeck. This
man’s invention became the
inspiration for the CCD chip.

Two years later Willard Boyle
and George Smith invented the
CCD chip after an hour
brainstorming. This device was
made for storing data originally
and later became used for digital
imaging.

One year after this incredible
break through for digital
imaging the CCD chip took live
images from cameras.

The awards Boyle and Smith
won relatively soon afterwards
were the Franklin Institute’s
Stuart Ballantine Medal in 1973
and the year later the Morris
Liebmann Award for the CCD.

A big milestone achieved using
the CCD chip was the first
digital camcorder that was made
by Sony in 1983.

It was not until 1994 when
cameras could be connected to
computers and be used
efficiently.

1995 was a year when digital
cameras got a huge benefit over
the film; they had small LDC
screens fitted to it to view
pictures.

Probably one of the most
important CCD uses in space
was making the Hubble Space
Telescope in 1990 use a CCD to
capture all its images.

Not until recently did Willard
Boyle and George Smith receive
a handsome some of money for
their very useful invention. In
January 2006 they won the
Charles Draper Prize and got
500,000$ to split.
