At Girl Scouts of Eastern
Massachusetts, our mission
is to build girls of courage,
confidence, and character, who
make the world a better place.
And this year’s Ultimate Guide
is full of programs that will help
transform our girls into the leaders of tomorrow.
Our outdoor programs, from archery to zip-lining, will help girls
build the courage it takes to expand the boundaries of where they
will go and what they can achieve.
Our annual STEM conference, along with other programs offering
hands-on experience in science, technology, engineering and
math, will help girls build the confidence it takes to pursue any
career they choose.
And our new series of civic education and citizenship programs at
the Edward M. Kennedy Institute will help girls build the character
it takes to become good citizens and great leaders.
But these are just a few of the nearly 200 programs listed in the
Ultimate Guide that will strengthen girls’ bodies, minds and
spirits today, so they can change the world tomorrow. And our
comprehensive volunteer enrichment programs support the
adults who will guide girls throughout their journeys.

2016–17 PROGRAM REGISTRATION
How to Register:
Register online at hergirlscouts.org: Click on Activities
to choose your program or training, click the Register
Now button, and log in to register.
If you’d like to register by mail, you’ll find
downloadable registration forms and mailing
instructions by clicking on Forms at the top of the
hergirlscouts.org homepage.
Please note: mail-in registrations may require
up to four weeks to process and confirm. Online
registration can be confirmed immediately.
Before you register, please read and adhere to all
guidelines in the following documents:
1. GSEM Volunteer Policies and Procedures: Please
pay special attention to the Substance Abuse
and Alcohol Policy and to the Non-Smoking
Environment Policy.
2. Volunteer Essentials, Chapter 4: “Safety-Wise.”

GSEM is committed to assuring inclusion of all

Financial Assistance: Grants for Girls
REGISTRATION
Cost should never prevent girls from participating in our programs. Financial
assistance is available for any girl living in one of the Girl Scouts of Eastern
Massachusetts communities.

hamsters, ferrets, hedgehogs, rabbits, turtles and birds. You will

Junior Olympic
Archery Development
JCSA
Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) is a USA
Archery program designed to teach archery to people ages
8 to 20. The program offers instruction in both recurve
and compound disciplines by certified instructors and
coaches. Archers begin by learning range safety and
proper shooting technique in an environment that fosters
focus, self-confidence and team-building skills. JOAD is
designed to monitor and enhance each archer’s growth
and development in this great sport: the introductory
classes naturally progress from beginner skills to advanced
techniques. Program questions: [email protected].
Yearly Joiner Fee
The annual registration fee includes a club T-shirt, lanyard,
stretch band and information packet. You must pay the
joiner fee before registering for sessions.
Art from Above
Girls: $45
Pulled by a team of your friends, you’ll fly 25 feet in the air—while
creating a piece of art. Work together to help each girl create an
item she can show off proudly. Safety note: You will be in a harness,
attached to a belay rope and wearing a helmet. Program questions:

Be inspired by the 50 outdoor artworks in deCordova’s unique
30-acre sculpture park. After a tour featuring the various materials,
scales and subjects of the sculptures on view, you’ll become the
artist and earn the Outdoor Art badge. Make your own sculptures
in varying sizes and materials, then join in creating a collaborative

Examine marine species like jellyfish, sea stars, crabs, sea shells,
squid and more. You’ll learn how to properly care for fish tanks,
make a poster about oceanography, and conduct water experiments.

This program offers girls turning 13 or older this year an outdoor
challenge in a controlled and fun environment. Rock Spot’s staff will
facilitate team-building activities and introduce you to climbing,
belaying, knots and rappelling. This is an advanced program for older
girls seeking adventure. The climbing program takes approximately
four hours to complete. Once the gym closes at midnight, girls may
choose to climb more (with leader supervision), play team-building
games, or watch a movie in the yoga room. At lights out, everyone

through hands-on activities.
Our dynamic workshop presenters, leaders in their STEM

and many others. During the Expo, you will network
with representatives from Massachusetts businesses
and universities with a STEM focus. It is a fun, lively
atmosphere where you will observe live demonstrations,

habitat! Hold a whale bone to see how a whale skeleton differs from
ours, and learn how whales stay warm in the cold North Atlantic.

Junior Essentials
REQUIRED FOR JUNIOR TROOP VOLUNTEERS.
Learn to guide and mentor Juniors as they develop leadership
skills. Develop strategies to promote a girl-led environment and
successfully implement Journeys and badges for a well-rounded and
fun experience. Also covered: the online Volunteer Toolkit, behavior
management, girl-led planning and additional awards.
This course is offered in two parts: an online program and a handson skills session with an instructor. The online portion must be
completed prior to the in-person session, and both portions must
be completed for certification. Certification is valid for two years.

This course is for those whose First Aid and CPR certifications are
about to expire or have expired within 30 days of the listed session.
Recertification is valid for two years. Course fee includes take home
resource book, keychain CPR mask and certification card.

Requirements
At least one troop volunteer should be certified in First
Aid and CPR. Consult GSEM’s Volunteer Essentials
and Safety Activity Checkpoints for activities that
require standard first aid and/or wilderness first aid
training. MEDIC sessions cover: adult/child/infant
CPR, AED and basic first aid. We continue to add in
MEDIC sessions throughout the membership year.

TROOP & GROUP CAMPING TRAININGS
Troop camping requires one adult who has completed Troop Camping Skills training and at least one
other adult certified in First Aid and CPR. First Aid and CPR certification is offered as a separate training.
Camping training is offered during a limited timeframe in the spring and fall. We recommend taking
camping training a full six weeks prior to camping with girls. Visit the Activities tab at hergirlscouts.org for
additional Troop Camping Skills training. Dates for spring 2017 will be posted in January 2017.

Troop Camping Skills—Lodge
Completion of this overnight course enables participants to take
troops camping in tents, cabins or lodges, on council-sponsored
Brownie Camping and Junior Camping programs, or on town

and risk management, packing tips, fire-building, menu planning
and outdoor cooking. Pre-course work required.

Archery Training
Troop Travel and Extended Trips
Girls love to travel and have opportunities to fund their own
adventures and make their own plans. Girl Scouts is the
perfect way to make it happen, however, there is a lot of safety
information adults need to know. An extended trip is defined
as any domestic trip three nights or longer (unless it is a
three-night trip with one night being a federal holiday) or any
international trip. These trips require prior council approval.
For assistance with planning and obtaining council approval,

Learn archery range set-up, safety, rules, procedures, commands
and how to teach the basic form. There is a final one-hour written
exam. Passing the exam (75% or better) and the practical skills
component will certify you as a USA Level 1 Instructor. Program

While the adults are at the Volunteer Conference,
girls can spend the day with other Girl Scouts
having tons of fun: participating in arts and crafts,
sports and games, STEM activities and more. Adults
required to register for conference and stay on site.
Regional Delegate Meetings
Join GSEM at the twice-annual regional delegate meetings to discuss
council business and learn about council governance. All delegates
are required to attend two sessions to represent their region, either
in person or online. Pre-registration is required and open to all
members age 14 and older. New delegates are being sought for a
three-year term beginning with the 2016-17 membership year. The
nomination deadline is Nov. 2016. See hergirlscouts.org for details.

Girl Scouts make a difference in their communities, both at the
girl and adult level. Yet it isn’t always easy to make connections

December 14, 2016 – Volunteer Mediation at GSEM
Dive into the newest GSEM volunteer mediation procedures
that support girls, volunteers and families. We’ll highlight
procedures for dispute mediation, available resources and
helpful tips for resolving disputes among volunteers in your
