Marian Catholic College 185 WAKADEN STREET, GRIFFITH NSW 2680 No 2 TELEPHONE: (02) 69692400 WEBSITE: www.mccww.catholic.edu.au Timetable Week 2– 6 February 2015 God of our Journey, As we begin another year, refreshed, cleansed, renewed, we resolve to begin again. We lift up our hearts to you, we lift them up to you, we rejoice that you are present to us, close to us, journeying with us. Amen Dear Parents, Students and Friends Congratulations to all our Year 12 2014 Distinguished Achievers. Below is a list of the students who were awarded a Band 6 in the 2014 HSC Examinations. The Marian Catholic College Dux for 2014 is Lachlan Webb. Lachlan was invited to address the college assembly to pass on some tips to the students on how he was successful in his studies. Here is an excerpt... wise words indeed! “All I can tell you all is to just do what you find works for you, and do it enough that you start to sound like you know what you’re talking about; there’s no magic secret to doing well. What worked for me was reading the same information from multiple sources, and then using that information to then write, in my own words, either a summary or a response to a question. This was the only thing that I could do to get things to stick. As well as that, and probably more importantly, I made sure to never leave class without having understood the lesson, and that meant asking as many questions as I could think up to make sure it was clear. My thanks goes to my teachers for answering them. Every lesson.“ HSC Band 6 Distinguished Achievers 2014 STUDENT BAND 6 Subject 1 BAND 6 Subject 2 BAND 6 Subject 3 Lachlan Webb Ashley Weir Tristan Agostini Mathematics English Extension I Business Studies Physics Studies of Religion II English (Advanced) Emily Budd Ishra Prasad Sukran Bengisu Mersinli Rhianna Colpo Lucy Ryan David Beecher Maggie Bell Connor Heffernan Hannah Pastro Jacinta Gatti Charlie McIver Design and Technology English (Advanced) Japanese Continuers Business Studies Mathematics Mathematics Ancient History Mathematics Hospitality Examination Society and Culture Society and Culture English Extension I English Extension I Studies of Religion II Dana Romagnolo Society and Culture Studies of Religion I Ted Jones Music 1 Peace and Best wishes Principal Design and Technology Studies of Religion II English (Advanced) Studies of Religion I Society and Culture The following students have achieved a ATAR result of 90 or higher Lachlan Webb, Ashely Weir, Tristan Agostini, Ishra Prasad, Sukran Bengisu Mersinli, Rhianna Colpo, Lucy Ryan, David Beecher and Emily Budd (absent). The theme is ‘We are Gifted’ and the day is an opportunity for the year group to form and strengthen relationships and to recognise each other’s gifts. The day will be held on College grounds during normal school hours. The students will need to wear sun safe clothing, enclosed shoes (no thongs or sandals) and bring a hat. Lunch is provided however they will need to bring recess. It would be great if each student could also remember their pencil case with textas, scissors, coloured pencils and glue. We are all looking forward to a great day getting to know the many gifts your children bring with them to MCC. Sports Uniform 2015 Marian Catholic College has made a slight change to the Sports Uniform during the summer months in terms 1 and 4. During Terms 1 and 4, all students in years 7 and 8 are to wear shorts for the boys and skorts or shorts for the girls. Track suit pants are NOT part of the uniform in terms 1 and 4 and cannot be worn during these two terms. The college also encourages all boys in all year groups to wear shorts as part of their sport and school uniforms during the hotter months. To achieve this, Council’s Community Development team has created a survey to hear from youth directly! The survey, aimed at people aged 12 to 18 years, has been put together by Gemma Hehir, a Charles Sturt University Social Work student who is assisting the Community Development department to develop the strategy. In partnership with Griffith City Cinemas, Community Development is giving away movie passes to 20 young people who complete the survey. “We are very excited to move forward with this important project as it is part of Council’s vision to engage with young people in meaningful ways so we can plan a city that is vibrant and engages our youth,” said Peta Dummett, Community Development Coordinator. “What better way to drive this project than to learn first-hand from youth how they operate, work, communicate, do things and see the world in general? Their input in this survey is very important in helping us move forward with a Youth Engagement Strategy.” The survey asks questions such as “Would you be interested in attending regular youth meetings?” “Would you be interested in joining a youth committee?” “Which form of social media would you use to express your opinion on youth related issues/activities other than a youth council?” and “What are some of the positive things about living in Griffith?” Ms Dummett said Gemma will be in contact with high school students during the next week to discuss anything that will help ensure the strategy meets the needs of young residents. To participate in the Youth Survey, please click here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NKPQ6K5 You can also find the survey link on Council’s website and Facebook page (www.griffith.nsw.gov.au and www.facebook.com/griffithcitycouncil) as well as the headspace4griffith Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/Headspace4Griffith. Printed copies will be available at Griffith City Council’s admin building at 1 Benerembah Street, the Griffith City Library, the Aquatic Centre, Westend Stadium and at local high schools in the Griffith area. If you have questions about the Youth Survey or Council’s Youth Engagement Strategy, please contact Peta Dummett on (02) 6962 8100. Information: Saideh Barlow Corporate Communications Officer Peta Dummett Community Development Coordinator Dear Parents and students, Correspondence has been received from Griffith City Council regarding road rule compliance and infringement notices, the content is as follows: With the start of the new school year - could I ask you to provide a reminder to parents/students about their obligations when complying with the road rules on the streets around Marian Catholic College? Council's Traffic Engineer and I have recently conducted observations around several schools across Griffith and found the behaviour of some drivers and pedestrians significantly places the safety of many students in jeopardy. In relation to Marian Catholic College - our concerns relate to the practice of drivers parking in No Stopping zones on Wakaden Street and Hickey Crescent. On Wednesday afternoon of this week - we observed 8 vehicles parked in the No Stopping zone on the northern side of Wakaden Street between the school car park entrance and Barellan Street. These vehicles were stopped with the intention of turning into the school parking area but because of the congestion - they remained on Wakaden Street in the No Stopping zone. The zone prohibits this practice and should the internal parking area be full - parents must seek alternative places to park whilst waiting to collect students. Similarly, and of greater concern, we observed 11 vehicles parked in the No Stopping zone on the western side of Hickey Crescent between the old bus zone and Wakaden Street. These vehicles effectively blocked off the street south of the Lowing Place intersection therefore other vehicles were travelling on the incorrect side of the road to clear the congestion. No Stopping zones have been implemented in the area as a safety measure to improve the sight distance along the streets and/or to reduce congestion around intersections and narrow streets. Illegally parked vehicles significantly compromises the safety of road users therefore compliance with parking restrictions must be strictly adhered to. Could I ask you to place information on parking issues around the school in your next news letter to remind parents to park correctly and to advise them of the penalties associated with illegal parking. A summary of school related parking offences is attached. Council Rangers will be asked to monitor the situation starting later next week therefore persons found illegally parked may be issued parking fines for not complying with parking restrictions. Greg Balind Road Safety Griffith City Council Ph:0269 628100 Please find detailed infringement brochure following for your information Alan Le Brocque Principal Students are to see Careers Adviser for application forms and further information regarding these days they are mostly open to Year 11 & 12, but occasionally for earlier Years. Applications should be in to me at least 2 weeks prior to event date. These are very valuable experiences and are highly recommended. Mrs Farrugia
