It consists of deep kneading slowly and firmly. This massage technique is used in the shampooing, conditioning and treatment process to relax the client and stimulate the blood flow to the hair follicle. It is carried out with the padded palm surface, fingers or thumbs. Use slow circular movements to knead the head. This will stimulate the scalp and is a deep massage technique. B Effleurage is from French meaning to skim or lightly touch and is a series of gentle stroking massage movements made with the palm of the hand. It is used to evenly distribute shampoo, conditioner and treatment. Keep contact with one hand throughout this process to relax the client. C An alternative technique is tapotement / vibration used with a vibro massage machine or hands. It is rhythmic and percussive, and is carried out with the edge of the hand, a cupped hand or the tips of the fingers. This is a stimulating technique. D Rotary massage uses finger pads with a firm circular movements performed over the scalp’s surface. © 2012 My Hairdressers Ltd | Page 2 of 13 LEVEL 2 / UNIT GH8 Step By Step E Friction - A massage technique which consists of vigorous movement with the pads of the fingers. Only done for a few minutes and not always performed. This massage technique can be used in the shampooing and condition process to cleanse the scalp and aid in the removal of dirt and debris. Step 1 Begin by applying a protective gown. Using an Easydry disposable towel, fold a small lip across the long edge at the top double lining the collar area for extra protection. The doubled effect provides a firm edge for tucking. Step 2 Ensure the client is supported when moving back into the backwash. Step 3 Check the client is comfortable. Note: In this instance Chika chooses to use a second towel wrapped around the front of the client for added protection and a professional service feel. This can have cost implications and is affected by individual salon ethos and etiquette. © 2012 My Hairdressers Ltd | Page 3 of 13 LEVEL 2 / UNIT GH8 Step By Step Step 4 Ensure all the hair is in the backwash throughout the hairline. Step 5 Always check the water temperature. Step 6 It is a good idea to wet your hands first to enable you to move the hair away from the hairline. Check the water temperature again. Step 7 Apply water to the crown first. © 2012 My Hairdressers Ltd | Page 4 of 13 LEVEL 2 / UNIT GH8 Step By Step Step 8 Stroke away any excess water on the hands before progressing into the hairline. If the hands and arms are too wet the water could drip onto the clients face causing discomfort. Step 9 When wetting the hair use the hand as a shield. Step 10 Continue until both sides are evenly damp. Pick up the head and check the underneath. In order to evenly soak the back and to prevent the water going down the neck cup one hand and apply water with the other. Step 11 Depending on product quality use approximately 3cm diameter of shampoo in the palm of the hand. © 2012 My Hairdressers Ltd | Page 5 of 13 LEVEL 2 / UNIT GH8 Step By Step Step 12 Massage the product in your hands and with the palms flat work from front hairline round to the ear down to the nape and then through the ends. This ensures even coverage. Step 13 Work through the hairline to the centre of the head with a stroking motion and with fingers apart. Step 14 Work with the same technique from the centre to the back of the ears, then from behind the ears into the nape sliding the fingers. Ensure the back hairline is included. Step 15 Using the same procedure rinse the hair, again checking temperature first. © 2012 My Hairdressers Ltd | Page 6 of 13 LEVEL 2 / UNIT GH8 Step By Step Step 16 If dealing with shorter lengths around the perimeter be aware that the hair can spring back and spray the client therefore a gentle and careful approach must be taken. Step 17 If required, apply suitable conditioner using a jumbo comb working from ends through to roots. Step 18 Then massage the head for client comfort and service. Use the balls of the fingers and apply pressure to the indentations of the head to stimulate blood supply. Step 19 Work from the front hairline into the back. © 2012 My Hairdressers Ltd | Page 7 of 13 LEVEL 2 / UNIT GH8 Step By Step Step 20 Work in the nape then change the angles of the fingers and work back up the centre of the head with a backwards motion. Step 21 Apply pressure with the thumbs and work from the centre front into the crown. Step 22 Apply pressure to the sides of the head using the palms with a rotating movement. Move to the nape area using the finger tips in a rotating manner around the hairline. If time allows, repeat this process. Step 23 Rinse the hair using the same method as before. © 2012 My Hairdressers Ltd | Page 8 of 13 LEVEL 2 / UNIT GH8 Step By Step Step 24 Remove the front towel from the client and place a fold on the long edge at the top for a firm edge. Step 25 Place the edge over the forehead and into the sides. Place your thumbs together at the top and stroke downwards to the ear. Step 26 Use your fingers to blot excess water that has been trapped in the ears. Move your fingers behind the ears. Step 27 Move your hands and the towel back and down to remove excess moisture from the hair using a blotting technique. © 2012 My Hairdressers Ltd | Page 9 of 13 LEVEL 2 / UNIT GH8 Step By Step Step 28 Place the towel across the top of the basin, lift the hair up and over into the towel.
