then start to rotate the rod or part you are applying
the veneer to. As you rotate it push down the veneer
with the burnishing tool. You will need to continuously
run the burnishing tool the full length of the part as it
is slowly rotated. Use the burnishing tool to smooth
down the exposed edge of the veneer strip.
Step 1:
Measure blank diameter
to get the strip width
necessary to cover the
area. To do this, wrap
several plies of masking
tape at each section you
need to measure. Slice
the tape with a razor
blade and remove from
blank. Place the tape on
the backing of the veneer
at the desired length of
the part. Draw a line from
just above the ends of the
tape lengths then cut the
veneer piece to be used
with scissors.
Step 5:
Next you will need to remove the thread after the
veneer strip has cooled down. After removing the
thread you’ll need to do a small trim wrap at each end
to keep the edges down.

Apply 2-3 coats of finish to your abalone. Allow to
rotate and dry. Your Finished.

Remove the backing from the veneer strip. Use the
burnishing tool to gently push down the leading edge
of the abalone veneer strip.

Next, heat the veneer flap with the heat gun set on low.
You begin by gently passing the heat gun across the
veneer with the direction of the hot air towards the flap
of the veneer sticking up. Do this for about 10 seconds

Immediately after applying the abalone veneer strip
you will want to do a thread wrap over the entire
length of the veneer strip you applied. This will smooth
the surface and force out air bubbles for a more
uniform surface to finish over. You will want to leave
the thread wrapped around the part until it cools back
to room temperature (usually about 20 minutes).

3A. Continue this process until you have glued all of
the wedges into a circle.
1A. Insert
cork rings into
checkerboard jig
and cut wedges
to the desired size
(1/4, 1/6, 1/12).
Typically what you
would do is one
darker burnt or
colored cork ring and one regular ring so that you will
get the contrast. Cut one regular ring and one colored
ring into the same number of wedges. For example
purposes we will use 1/6.
2A. After you have the wedges cut, squeeze out a
small spot of glue onto a piece of plastic or cardboard
that can be thrown away. I find it easiest to use a
regular disposable brush for applying the adhesive.
Begin by applying the adhesive on one side of the
wedge, select one of the opposite color wedges and

apply glue to both sides of
that wedge and stick it to the
first wedge you glued up.
Select another wedge of the
opposite color as the last and
apply glue to both sides and
stick it to the previous one.
4A. After forming a circle, use a Mud Hole Cork Ring
Tie (MHCRT-8) to clamp the wedges together under
pressure until they have dried. This usually takes
several hours depending upon the adhesive used.

1B. After the
clamped wedges
have dried forming
a cork ring, you will
want to cut it into
slices so as to form a
checkerboard pattern
in a rod grip. You
will find that different
types of cork rings
are slightly different in thickness so you will most
likely have to sand down the finished ring to a smooth
surface. I make sure during the clamping process that
all of the wedges are flush on a smooth surface so I
only need to sand one side of the ring. I find that a 320
grit sand paper on a flat surface works well and takes
very little time to sand smooth.
2B. Now we are
ready to make our
slices, using the
Slicing Jig, insert the
cork ring you have
made into the jig.
CORK INLAY
Hold it steady inserting the saw blade into the
horizontal cut in the side of the jig. Each cut will create
a 1/8” slice, so you will get 4 slices out of each cork
ring you make. You can also make the slices thinner
by inserting some type of shim material in the bottom
of the jig.
Assembling cork rings
down the mandrel until you have the length of grip
you desire.
Remember before clamping your rings together to
align the checkerboard pieces so that they create the
pattern you desire.
3B. Next you will assemble
your grip utilizing your new
checkerboard slices and
slices of your choice of cork
or eva grip material. You will
assemble the grip the same
way you would if you were
building a grip from regular
cork ring only you will insert
the disc’s to create unique
patterns and designs of your
choice.
1C. For this assembly process we recommend you
use the normal two part epoxy that you would for
your regular handle assembly. We recommend that
you assemble your grip on a steel mandrel and utilize
a cork clamp to compress the rings and minimize the
glue line created by the layer of epoxy in between each
cork ring. Use a spatula or stir stick to put a smooth
layer of glue on each side of each ring, slide the ring

can be achieved. Take measurements then cut the
skin a little larger than required.
Step 1.
Step 3.
Rod Preparation: Scuff the location where the inlay is
to be applied with Scotch Bright. Determine the length
of the inlay. Wrap the beginning and end parameters
with masking tape and mark the 0 and 180 degree axis
on both. This will provide the capability to align the
pattern just like you would do when you do a diamond or
chevron thread wrap.
Step 2.
Apply color
preserver to the
rod blank and the
back side of the
skin. Then place
the skin on the 0
degree center line
aligning the center of the pattern to the marks on the
masking tape. Smooth the skin with your fingers then
roll the rod and smooth the skin to the 180 degree
locatlion. Repeat this process for the other side of
the skin so both sides end at the 180 degree location.
If the skin has any wrinkles, pull loose and smooth
again. Be careful not to stretch the skin so much that
it distorts the pattern. In the event the color preserver
becomes too dry, apply more to allow movement of
the skin.
Step 4.
Cut Skin to size. Place the skin on the rod and
determine the best place where the best design

Create near seamless connection. At the 180 degree
axis (backside of the inlay) over lap the skin making
sure it is glued down with color preserver. Tape a
small metal ruler to the rod blank that is aligned with
the marks on the masking tape. Use a new razor blade
to cut along the ruler to slice through two layers of the
skin. Be careful, the skin cuts very easy so not much
pressure is required. Avoid excessive pressure to
avoid damaging the rod.
Step 5.
Remove under
layer of skin. When
the skin is cut in
step 4, it leaves a
small piece of skin
underneath the top
skin. This is easily
removed by lifting the top skin and pulling the skin
underneath from the rod. When the skin is removed,
apply more color preserver and close the seam by
pushing both sides together.
Step 6.
Square ends of inlay.
Wrap masking tape
around each end of the
inlay to square the ends.
Use a razor blade to
trim the ends of the skin
following the masking
tape as a guide. Again, be
careful, the skin cuts very
easy so only a little pressure is required.

the snake skin inlay is not completely sealed with color
preserver, it will wick into the inlay and create very ugly

Step 1.

base coat.
First you are going to want to tape off the area
where you are going to marble with rod builders
masking tape. This should give you a nice and
clean start and stop lines to work within.
Step 6.
Now you will add in different color pigments
into the the individual cups. The pigments are
extremely concentrated, so using a very small
amount goes a very long way.
Step 4.

Next you are going to spray the taped off area with a
standard spray paint. This is going to be used as your
marbling background. The general rule of thumb is that
using a lighter color yields the best results.
Once the epoxy finish is mixed up, apply a coat of
the clear epoxy to the area that you have prepared
for marbling. This is going to be the layer of finish
we will add our pigment to. Even if you choose
not to use spray paint, you are still going to need
to place a layer of epoxy down before you add
pigment.
Now it’s time to marble. Apply each color to the
rod blank using a toothpick or small thread pick.
Try different patterns and color combinations

Now that you have your background painted on,
you are going to need to mix up at least 6cc of

mixing cups. Use as many mixing cups as colors
you plan on marbling with.

primary colors Red, Yellow and Blue (RYB).
You can create virtually any color by
combining varying ratios of RYB.

You can drag a pick through the colors, or use
a spatula to smear all the colors together. There
are many different methods of adding and
transforming the colors to the rod. Experimenting
on a wooden dowel or scrap piece of blank is
recommended before applying to a rod build.

Step 1:

Use a china marker on your gaff blank and mark the
spots where your EVA handles will be mounted.
Step 2:
Use masking tape and build up an arbor on the
blank so your butt cap fits snugly.

epoxy and glue
your butt cap to
the end of the
gaff blank.

We have supplied a chart with the outside dimensions

WHY Micro?
• A set of micro guides only weigh 17% of what a set of standard sizes weigh. Any weight
savings on the upper portion of a rod adds significantly to its sensitivity.
• Casting distance is increased because the line path is totally straight from butt guide to tip.
• The durability of these guides is equal to or greater than conventional single foot guides
because of their low profile. A shorter profile means a shorter lever with which to bend.
• The low profile means that you get far fewer “wind knots” with braid because there is not
as much protrusion to catch a loop.

These new micro’s offer everything you will want in a “mini guide”. Not only are they less than ½ the weight of
conventional micro’s of comparable size they have no ring to lose. Due to the high carbon content in the alloy
they perform exceptionally well with either braid or mono. Saltwater testing has shown no signs of deterioration.
Consider a full spinning guide set (13 guides) with a combined weight of 0.09 oz. And this weight is with the largest #3 guides for running guides.

History of the Turk’s Head Knot
A Turk’s head knot is a decorative knot with a variable number of interwoven strands,
forming a closed loop. The name is used to describe the general family of all such
knots rather than one individual knot. While generally seen made around a cylinder, the
knot can also be deformed into a flat, mat-like shape. Some variants can be arranged
into a roughly spherical shape, akin to a monkey’s fist knot.
The knot is used primarily for decoration and occasionally as anti-chafing protection.
A notable practical use for the Turk’s head is to mark the “king spoke” of a ship’s
wheel; when this spoke is upright the rudder is in a central position. The knot takes its
name from a notional resemblance to a turban, though a turban is wound rather than
interwoven.
Each type of Turk’s head knot is classified according to the number of leads and bights
and method of construction. The number of bights is the number of crossings it
makes as it goes around the circumference of the cylinder. The number of leads is the
number of strands around the circumference of the cylinder, before doubling, tripling,
etc. Depending on the number of leads and bights, a Turk’s head may be tied using a
single strand or multiple strands. Mathematically, the number of strands is the greatest
common divisor of the number of leads and the number of bights; the knot may be tied
with a single strand if and only if the two numbers are coprime. For example, 3 lead × 5
bight (3×5), or 5 lead × 7 bight (5×7).
