to large farm equipment you can probably find something
that suits your taste at this event.
City of Ceylon
This quiet little community of 413 people in the southern
portion of Martin County celebrated its 100th birthday in
2000, having been established on November 5, 1900, making
it a truly turn-of-the century city.
There are plenty of lakes nearby providing opportunities for
camping and year-round fishing. Clear Lake is about a half
mile from the city limits and Tuttle and Okamanpeedan
Lakes are also nearby.
On April 17th the city plays host to Community Day, an
annual auction and sale that includes almost anything.
People come from throughout the state and surrounding
area to take part in this unique event. From small livestock
City of Sherburn
The annual Sherburn Festival, a long time standard in the
area, will take place in June. The weekend will include a
Firemen’s dance, chicken and sweet corn feed on Friday and
free entertainment in the city park on Saturday and Sunday.
The festival weekend will be topped off with the annual
parade on Sunday, an event which draws quality entrants and
large crowds every year.
Sherburn is the home of Martin County West High School
6

and Elementary School. The elementary school has a swimming pool that is open to the public.
There is plenty to do in Sherburn, whether taking in a $3
movie in the theater downtown on the weekend, visiting one
of the two cafes, or picnicking at Ida Landin Park where kids
can play on the playground equipment while adults grill dinner.
Sherburn offers several outdoor activities year round. If
you like fishing or water sports, Temperance Lake to the east
of town or Fox Lake on the northern edge will meet your
needs, including ice fishing during winter months. Camping
is available on Fox Lake at Everett Park, which is operated by
the Fox Lake Conservation Club. Golfers can hit the links at
Fox Lake Golf Club, a nine-hole course nearby.
For entertainment, the I-90 Expo Center is less than two
miles away. The facility holds numerous horse shows and
competitions, as well as featuring popular concerts from
entertainers like Dwight Yoakum and Trace Adkins. Several
rodeos, roping and riding events, and horse sales are planned
this year at the I-90 Expo Center.
City of Trimont
Tucked away in the northwestern reaches of Martin County
is the City of Trimont, population 754. The city got its name
when the towns of Triumph and Monterey were combined
back in 1959.
Those cities were both established in 1899 on two separate
rail lines, which explains why they were so close to each
other.
One of the most popular sites in the Trimont area is
Cedar/Hanson Park on Cedar Lake. The park is a popular
camping spot and has amenities for picnicking and volleyball. Both tent and RV sites are available, as well as a boat
ramp. If you want to get a spot during the summer holidays
you better move early because the park fills up quickly with
campers who have made these trips part of their annual
agenda. Big Twin Lake is another nearby lake that provides
good fishing also.
On sunny summer Sundays head down to Sundaes in the
Park for an old time community ice cream social. The event
features concerts by local performers who have a tie to
Trimont.
The community also hosts a summer festival, Trimont
Chocolate Festival. This is the first festival in the state to celebrate chocolate.
The festival has a one day format and will be held on July
10th. There will be a chocolate booth and a host of chocolate
items like ice cream, donuts, and malts.
Food, games for the kids, and entertainment will be part of
the weekend and a parade is also planned.
Trimont is home to Martin County West Junior High
School.
City of Truman
Truman is located on the north central edge of Martin
County in Westford Township. The first settlement in the
township was established in 1857 along Elm Creek. It was
named Truman in the spring of 1899 when it was surveyed.
In its early years Truman boomed. By February 1900 there
were over 214 inhabitants. The town was incorporated on
March 29, 1900.
Truman today continues to change and adapt itself for the
future. The railroad and many of Truman’s once-thriving
businesses are gone, fallen victim to declining farm populations, migration to the cities, the automobile, superhighways, and regional shopping centers. Yet, as always,
Truman’s real wealth lies in the energy, tenacity, and vision
of its residents. Born of the railroad and raised on the farms,
Truman continues to reach toward the future as a community of caring, supportive neighbors, and a rural survivor.
Today, the population of Truman is 1,259, boasting affordable housing, a great place to raise a family, and grow a business. A quality education is provided through the Truman
Public School System and St. Paul’s Lutheran school, which
also has a licensed daycare and a Latch Key Program. There
are five churches within city limits: Church of Christ,
Community Baptist, Trinity Lutheran (ELCA), St. Paul’s
Lutheran Church (MO Synod), and St. Katherine’s Catholic
Church.
There are many recreational opportunities that can be
7

enjoyed in Truman. There is an outdoor heated swimming
pool, campground, tennis courts, summer little league baseball and Legion baseball, girls softball, sand volleyball, a Trap
and Skeet Club, and Graf and Perch Lake parks. If you need
a place to stay The Whittler’s Lady Bed and Breakfast is available.
A community celebration is held on the fourth weekend in
July each year called Truman Days with a grand parade on
Saturday at 5:00 p.m. For more information visit the city
website at www.trumanmn.us.
City of Welcome
The City of Welcome, geographically located in the center
of Martin County, was incorporated in 1890. Originally
known as Lily Creek for the creek that still flows to the north,
the name was later changed to Welcome in honor of Alfred M.
Welcome, an Englishman who homesteaded in Manyaska
Township after the Civil War.
With a current population of 653, Welcome is home to two
churches, St. Paul’s United Church of Christ and Trinity
Lutheran Church ELCA and maintains the central offices for
the Martin County West School District. A branch of the
Martin County Library is located here, as well as various civic
organizations including the Welcome Lions, Welcome Senior
Citizens, American Legion Post #553, American Legion
Auxiliary, and the Welcome Historical Society. The Welcome
Historical Museum preserves antiques and records of the by
gone days. The Welcome Economic Development Authority
plays a role in maintaining Welcome’s business climate.
An ice skating rink provides winter recreational activities
and for summer fun, the Welcome Summer Festival is held
annually the third weekend in July. A new four-diamond
baseball complex has just been completed. For camping
facilities, Checker’s Welcome Campground is located within
city limits. Welcome continues to prosper with its vast
assortment of area businesses, services, and proximity to
Interstate 90 and rail service. Welcome to Welcome!

Early History Of Martin County
Martin County was part of the Louisiana, Missouri,
Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota Territories
between 1805 and 1858. It was actually established before
Minnesota became a state on May 23, 1857, taking portions of
Brown County and Faribault County.
The county was most likely named for Henry Martin of
Wallingford, Connecticut. According to William Budd, "The
county was named for him, not because he ever did anything
for the county, but because he was in a position by reason of
being frequently in Mankato to influence the naming of it for
him."
The first settlers in the county were Calvin Tuttle and one
Mr. Rickey. They came in March of 1856 and built the first
house on Center Chain of Lakes.
By the winter of 1856-1857, there were twenty men, nine
women, and twenty-three children in Martin County. The
first boy and girl born to the early settlers were Mary Virginia
Britts and Charles Fowler. The first post office opened in
1858 with William Budd as postmaster. Lorraine Swearingen
taught the first school in 1860. Dr. Orville Chubb built his
home at 209 Lake Avenue in Fairmont, now known as the
Chubb House, and Frank Day founded the Martin County
Sentinel in 1874.
The early settlers in Martin County were primarily of
English origin. In 1872, H. F. Shearman, a Connecticut
lawyer, went on a hunting trip to Martin County. Being very
impressed with the economic potential of the area, he purchased land near Fairmont and developed it into a model
farm. He then went back to England and influenced many
Englishmen, some quite wealthy, to invest in Martin County.
This became the "English Colony," or "Bean Colony," as they
planned to become wealthy raising beans. They arrived in
the spring of 1873 and planted approximately 1,000 to 1,200
acres of beans around Fairmont in Tenhassen and Rolling
Green Townships.
June of 1873 signaled the beginning of the grasshopper
infestation in and around Martin County. It was said that the
grasshoppers came like a snowstorm, completely covering
the ground. This "plague" continued for several years, and
then in 1877, Governor Pillsbury set aside a day of prayer and
fasting. On that day, the grasshoppers flew away without
depositing any of their eggs. The grasshopper plague was
over!

Early History Of Martin County
However, it had its effects on the English Colony.
Eventually their losses from the grasshopper infestation and
partial crop failures due to weather forced most of the
English Colonists to abandon their efforts to grow beans.
Many returned to England, and those that stayed turned to
other ventures, including business and farming.
Despite further setbacks, the colony expanded to the point
that the 1880 census showed that there were 219
Englishmen in Martin County. Those that stayed, such as
Percy Wollaston, Frederich Wherland, the Archer-Burtons,
Harry M. Serle, W. M. Hay, Joseph Ramsdale, H. W. Sinclair,
and others had a definite impact on Martin County and
essentially shaped it into what it was eventually to become.

Lost Towns Of Martin County
Cedarville
Cedarville, a thriving trade center for
thirty years, was located on the north
shore of Cedar Lake. The post office was
in existence from 1868-1903. After the
post office closed the mail was sent to
Monterey. Francis Drugan was the first
postmaster. Richard Crandell, Phinneas
Dennis, and Captain E. F. Wade were early storekeepers.
Captain Wade was also Justice of the Peace, Notary Public,
and did land office and collection business. The town had two
stores a hotel, blacksmith shop, wind grist mill, and some
homes. The Cedarville School (Dist. 34), the first school in
Cedar Township, was established in 1867. The Chicago and
Northwestern Railroads and Minneapolis and St. Louis
Railroads both by-passed Cedarville in 1899. Cedarville
declined rapidly after that.
De Soto
This town, located one mile northeast
of this marker, was platted by the
Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroad in
1899. It was named for Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto, the discoverer of
the Mississippi River, by a St. Paul resident in charge of the road’s town site.
The Spanish-American War had just concluded, and the citizens of Lake Fremont Township expressed hard feelings
about having their rail station named for a Spaniard. Since
De Soto was accessible only from the east, residents raised
$1,500 to move farther south, and thus create the nearby
community of Dunnell. De Soto only existed for a few
months before giving way to public sentiment and a better
location. The land reverted to its previous owner, the Eric
Olson family.
Center Chain
Center Chain, once the cultural center of the county, was the first settlement in Martin County. It was located
on the east bank of Iowa Lake.
Fairmont residents fled here for safety
during the Indian scare of 1857. The
post office was in existence from 1858 1905 after which time the area was served by Rural Route 3
from Fairmont. Linneus H. Hand ran a general store in connection with the post office when he was postmaster from
1880 - 1895. Arthur and Claudia Follett operated the store
around 1910 or before. The creamery was built in 1894 and
was in operation until 1908. The First Congregational
Church was dedicated in 1900. Prior to this, church services
were held in a near-by schoolhouse.
Lone Cedar
Lone Cedar Post Office was established June 4, 1867 in the
home of Kilburn Archer, its first postmaster. It was named
after the large cedar tree growing in Section 18, Manyaska
Township. It was an important post office because it was a
transfer point. The Fairmont-Jackson stage route served it
from the east and the St. James route from the north. Mr.
Archer maintained a tavern in a sod house called Lone Cedar
Tavern and Half-Way House as it was midway between
Fairmont and Jackson. The stage stopped to refresh horses,
drivers and passengers. Meals and overnight lodging were
available. Lone Cedar was changed to Sherburne Post Office
on January 6, 1879 (later Sherburn) when the Milwaukee
Railroad reached Sherburn.

Manyaska
Located on this site, the town of
Manyaska was established in 1899 and
was a station on the Chicago and
Northwestern
Railroad
between
Welcome and Ceylon. Manyaska is a
Dakota word which means "white bank
or bluff." At one time the town had two
lumberyards, a post office, a creamery, a grain elevator, a
general store, a hotel, and a depot. Though it was a prosperous shipping point for livestock and grain, Manyaska gradually declined. The post office closed in 1908, the stockyards
closed, the grain elevator burned down in 1960, and the last
building, the general store, was moved to Welcome in 1961
by Ray Wohlhuter family and converted to their residence.
All that remains today is open farmland.

Lost Towns Of Martin County
Nashville Center
Nashville Center was settled by American pioneers of
English, Scotch, and Welch descent in 1865. A school was
established in 1865 and a post office in 1867. This farming
settlement grew into a country trading center of about 100
people. Businesses included a blacksmith shop, general
store, creamery, livery stable, hardware and machinery store,
millinery shop, Woodman’s Lodge Hall, Freewill Baptist
Church, and 15 homes. The mail stage made 3 trips a week
from Garden City to Nashville Center to Fairmont. In 1899
the railroad was built from Madelia to Truman to Fairmont
which was the demise of Nashville Center. The creamery was
moved to Truman in 1900 and the post office was closed in
1904.
North Star
This community was settled by people of German descent.
A creamery was built in 1894 and a general store in 1895 or
1896. The North Star Post Office was established in Section
22, Waverly Township and moved to the store in 1898. An ice
house, church, parsonage, telephone company, and several
homes were also part of this thriving trade center. The post
office closed in 1904 after Welcome (8 miles southwest)
began a rural mail route. The general store closed about
1910. The exact date of the founding of the "German
Evangelical Peace Congregation," more commonly known as,
the North Star Church, is unknown. Services were held until
1923. The building was demolished in 1937. All that
remains today of this lost town is the cemetery.
Pixley
The town of Pixley, in Pleasant Prairie Township, was the
life work of George Pixley, a Vermont native. He also kept the
post office, 1881-1894, delivering mail to forty families three
times weekly. As a compliment to him, the post office was
named Pixley. In 1870 School District 44 was established at
his home. A schoolhouse was built in 1871 and named in his
honor. In 1881 he opened a country store in his home, for a
time known as the Wayside Inn. This was considered a Martin
County landmark and gathering place for the community.
The building burned down in 1935. In 1902, Mr. Pixley sold
out and moved away.
Tenhassen
Tenhassen, a Dakota word which means “sugar maple” was
known from 1856 to 1873 as Tuttle’s Grove, in honor of
Calvin Tuttle, the first settler in Martin County. The fur trade
furnished its only cash revenue in its earliest years. A post
office was established in 1862, and by 1875 there were stores,
a sawmill, and other businesses that once rivaled Fairmont in
size and importance. In 1875-76 the village aspired to
become a station on the Fort Dodge and Fort Ridgely
Railroad. When those hopes faded in 1878, businesses began
moving to Sherburn and in 1899 to Ceylon, a new town on
the Chicago and Northwestern line. By 1900 Tenhassen was
in rapid decline and lost its post office. Bypassed by the railroad, all that remains of Tenhassen today is a cemetery.
Much more information is available at the Martin County
Historical Society and Pioneer Museum in Fairmont.

Local History
The first permanent settlers, in what is now the City of
Fairmont, were E. Banks Hall and William H. Budd. In June
of 1857, these people built their homes on the lakes that still
bear their names. Mr. Budd recorded that in January of 1857,
twenty men, nine women, and twenty-three children lived in
the Fairmont area.
Fairmont was platted in October of 1857, by the Des Moines
and Watertown Land Company, who also named the town for
the rolling hills surrounding the adjacent lakes. The original
name was Fair Mount, but this was later changed to
Fairmont. Fairmont had the first post office in Martin
County, dedicated on October 9, 1858, with William Budd as
the first postmaster.
Fort Fairmount was established in 1862, shortly after the
start of the Dakota (Sioux) Indian uprising which terrified
settlers throughout southern Minnesota. With the end of the
Civil war and the subsiding of Indian troubles, Fort
Fairmount was abandoned. The site is now marked by a
plaque attached to a large native stone near the present courthouse.
When railroads came, prosperity followed, and towns
sprang up in every direction. The first train came to
Fairmont in July of 1878, when the village was only twenty
years old.
As cities go, Fairmont was young, vigorous, alert, and busy.
It was busy supplying the needs of a little empire right in the
middle of North America. Even in the lean years of the
1930’s, when drought depleted most sections of the Midwest,
Fairmont enjoyed fairly good business conditions while other
communities were existing on government relief checks.
With a vast trading area, both wholesale and retail,
Fairmont has remained stable. In fact, no economic nosedive
can be remembered by the oldest inhabitant. Fairmont
enjoys the enviable distinction of not having had a bank failure during the memorable 1930’s when bank failures were so
prevalent. The faith of the pioneers, who generations ago
selected this are as a home, has been justified. Nothing has
ever been lost through abiding faith in this area.
Fairmont’s future is as bright and exciting as her past….her
potential is unlimited.

Economic Development
Fairmont’s community and economic development effort
are what drive Fairmont to be one of southern Minnesota’s
best cities for transportation access, land availability, workforce and quality of life. Fairmont has a fairly significant
industrial manufacturing base. In the last five years there
has been some moderate decline, not unlike most of the
Midwest. Fairmont manufacturing companies of more moderate size 10-20 employees have experienced a higher rate of
physical and financial growth in their companies, while
employment numbers stabilized. Most growth companies
are smaller with fewer employees. 80% of all new jobs created are created in companies with 20 employees or less.
Fairmont is host to more than 500 businesses with these
characteristics. In fact, over the past 12 years Fairmont’s
Economic Development Authority’s revolving loan fund has
helped 47 businesses with loans from $17,000 - $140,000
totaling $2,200,000 leveraging another $16,000,000 in equity and conventional financing. It has also created 404 new
jobs or about 10 per company with new payroll of more than
$12,600,000.
Fairmont is also home to some fairly large businesses
including: Rosen Diversified, 3M, Avery Weigh-Tronix,
Aerospace Systems, REM, Hancor, Harsco Track
Technologies, and Fairmont Foods of Minnesota all employing in excess of 200 employees with a few that employ over
400. Fairmont Medical Center-Mayo Health System employs
over 700 with more than 40 doctors.
Located in the city limits of Fairmont are approximately 25
manufacturing firms. The nine largest employ between 1,500
- 2,500 people total. The entire Fairmont community is represented by more than 500 businesses.
Employment data is reported by county and MSA
(Metropolitan Statistical Area). For Martin County with a
population of 21,802 people; its labor force is 11,477 with
about a 8.1% unemployment rate. More than half of the
labor force are Fairmont residents, as Fairmont is over 50%
of the county’s total population. It is very important to point
out that the labor force draw area is a 30-mile radius. This
includes seven counties in Minnesota and Iowa. This area
represents a labor force of about 35,000.
For the last few years Fairmont has been gaining momentum as a value-added ag processing center and an area beginning to explore renewable fuels. In 2001 CHS, Inc. constructed a $75 Million soybean processing facility. The facility was planned with a refinery for sometime in the future. In
the summer of 2008 BioFuel Energy, LLC began production
and is one of Minnesota’s first 100 Million gallon/$150
Million ethanol plant. The plant will consume approximately 40 million bushels of corn each year. Each facility is set on
200 acres and abuts one another in Fairmont’s northwest
portion of the community. Each will create or have close to
50 employees with a combined payroll of just over $4 Million.
Each will add $0.05-$0.15 cents per bushel to the commodity they consume creating an additional $4 - $12 Million in
new revenue for area producers.
Four miles to the west, Valero Renewable Fuels opened and
began producing 100 million gallons annually at its $150
Million ethanol plant. The two plants will consume 80 million bushels of corn. Combined these three plants will have
created 150 jobs with an average annual wage of about
$40,000 per year. During these plants’ construction more
than 650 workers spent over 500,000 man hours completing
each plant at an average wage of $32 per hour or $16,000,000
in payroll. The US Chamber of Commerce suggests the longterm benefit of a plant creating 150 jobs account for another:
• $1.9 Million in personal income
• 6 new retail establishments
• 64 new non manufacturing jobs
• 202 increase in population
• 100 new family units
• 60 new school enrollments
• $1.4 Million in retails sales
20
Economic Development
Fairmont’s retail base is keeping pace by adding most
recently Walgreens, Wal-Mart Super Center, Kwik Trip,
Arby’s and many other national brand retailers are looking at
the opportunities that exist.
Other positive economic indicators are:
• Average hourly wage: top ten manufacturing
employers - $13.51/hour
• Average taxes (not including street assessments) on a
$100,000 home:
• City/County - $765/year
• Fairmont ranks 96 of 125 out state communities
making Fairmont one of the lowest property taxed
communities in the state.

2007 was approximately $180,000-$200,000 plus the

Yacht Club:
The Fairmont Chain of Lakes Yacht Club (CLYC) is one of south central Minnesota's best family recreation facilities. The CLYC was started by
families back in 1958 who wanted to enjoy the lakes of Fairmont, and have a place where they could feel like they were on vacation without leaving home. Located on the south end of Hall Lake, the CLYC is a family oriented, recreation club. The CLYC has a heated pool, with a slide and diving board, and also a baby pool for toddlers. There are daily lifeguard hours from Memorial Day weekend through the Labor Day weekend.
Swimming lessons are available to both members and non-members. The CLYC has a private sand beach and a members only boat landing. There
are several sailing regattas and sailing lessons available for those who would like to give sailing a try. A lakeside patio near a fire pit makes a perfect setting for barbequing and sunset bonfires. The CLYC has a modern climate controlled club house, which has a full kitchen and seating for
over 100 people. A large deck along the lakeside of the clubhouse gives a perfect view of the pool and Hall Lake. The CLYC offers complete facility rental for your wedding, graduation, company picnics, class reunions or company meetings. the fun at Friday’s in the Park at Citizen’s Park in downtown
Fairmont. Local talent provides entertainment each week
beginning the first Friday in June and running through mid

demonstrations, and animal shows are just some of the entertainment featured each week from 12:15 p.m. – 12:45 p.m.
One of the many fine Fairmont restaurants provides a reasonably priced lunch such as pizza, tacos, or subs. Lunch is
served to you by various members of the Fairmont business
community. Bank Midwest serves up hot, freshly popped
popcorn from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. every week. Not only is
it fresh – it’s FREE!

The Blizzard Snowmobile Club has been in existence since
1968. Over the years we have had races, safety classes, helped

to the south. During the winter months check out our website for grooming reports for our trail system. Our annual
racing weekend will be held in January. Contact Roman

access the club’s website at www.myblizzardclub.com.
Monthly meetings are held the first Monday of each month at
7:30 p.m. at the Blizzard Snowmobile Club Groomer
Building, 1224 East 10th Street. If it were not for clubs like
the Blizzard Snowmobile Club the state of Minnesota would
not have 20,000 miles of groomed trails. Protect your trails,
join Minnesota United Snowmobilers Association and a local
club, and be a part of it!
Cedar Creek Disc Golf
Cedar Creek Park, located in the southwest corner of
Fairmont, is home to two fantastic, 18-hole disc golf courses;
Cedar Creek EAST and Cedar Creek WEST. Disc golf is one of
the fastest growing sports in the world with over 6,000 courses worldwide. It is played with similar rules to ball golf but
you play by throwing plastic golf discs, similar to Frisbees,
and counting the number of throws from the tee to the basket.
The first course in Fairmont was installed in 1996 and its
use has grown every year. With the addition of the WEST
course in 2006, Cedar Creek Park became the only place in
Minnesota with multiple courses together in the same complex.
Check out our website at www.cedarcreekdiscgolf.com and
see a lot more details about these courses. You can check out
past and upcoming events, download scorecards with maps of
each course and see photographs of the beautiful course layout. Contact one of the course pros if you have any questions:
Jon Riggs at 507-238-9331, Trevor Boehne at 507-399-9536
or Dustin Reutzel at 507-399-3035. Call to learn about our
summer league. Discs are available at the Fairmont Area
Chamber of Commerce, 323 East Blue Earth Avenue,

City of Fairmont Trail System
The City of Fairmont offers miles of scenic trails that take
you around our beautiful chain of lakes. This multi-purpose
trail system may be accessed at various points throughout
the city. City of Fairmont Trail System maps are available at
the Fairmont Area Chamber of Commerce, 323 East Blue

ATV Trail System
Elm Creek Trail System is a scenic 7+ mile trail system with
enough excitement for the most adventurous in any group.
The trail is situated west of Trimont, MN in Martin County,
off of Martin County Highway 44. The trail was developed,
and is maintained by the All Season Wheelers. Funding provided through a Minnesota DNR grant-in-aid fund.
Bring friends and/or the whole family. This trail system is
situated entirely on private land. The narrow, meandering
trail weaves through the woodlands along Elm Creek and

crosses the creek several times. There is a 16+ acre open field
scramble area to play in, and release your need for speed.
There are also a couple of nice hills to climb and jump.
Leisurely types can look at/for wild life. Mud is popular, so
bring clean clothes just in case. If the water is at an appropriate enough level, we have armored crossings to get wet in.
These crossings pass through the creek in a few spots in an
environmentally friendly way. Otherwise, feel free to use any
of the bridges. Come on out, and have a great time.
The All Season Wheelers (ASW) ATV Club was started in
1998 for the purpose of creating a trail to be open to the public, and coordinate club ATV rides to far away places. ASW has
active members from several surrounding counties, with
some members being from out of state. For active members,
our meetings are held the third Thursday, of every month, at
7:30 p.m., at the Welcome Legion in Welcome, MN. ASW
maintains over 52 acres of trails and scramble area at the Elm
Creek Trail System near Trimont, MN. All Season Wheelers
always welcomes new associates to volunteer to help work on
maintaining the trail system. All ATV enthusiasts are welcome to enjoy our trail system.

AMBER LAKE
BRIGHT LAKE
The final member of
Fairmont’s chain of lakes is
relatively featureless, but
don’t let that fool you,
Amber is full of pan fish.
The east shoreline is great
for both bass and northern
pike. Channel catfish were
also more abundant, averaging about 15 inches long,
thus providing a bonus
species.

CEDAR LAKE
Cedar Lake is about as shallow
and flat as they come.
Surprisingly it has a gillnet count of
5.33 walleyes and the lake is not even managed for walleyes.
Sampled walleyes weighed in at 2.72 pounds! Experts believe
that walleyes are entering Cedar from nearby Fish Lake
which is regularly stocked.

HALL LAKE
LAKE GEORGE
Hall is not noted for bass; however, it can be a sleeper as few people are looking for them. Most of
the activity here is toward
walleyes, with the average
lengths being 19.79 inches. The
experts describe Hall Lake as a
"good overall fishery." In addition to walleye, Hall is noted for
its perch, crappies, and northern
pike. However, it is probably the
best lake in Fairmont for catching catfish.

A very productive lake, this shallow bowl retains an ample supply of walleyes, crappies, perch,
and bluegills. In 2001, statistics
reveal that walleye size ranged
from 7 – 22 inches with several
around 16 inches. Many crappies were sampled in the 7.5 – 9
inch range. The public fishing

fishing spot.

SOUTH SILVER LAKE
Experts get excited about the largemouth bass population in
South Silver. South Silver retains much better vegetation
than other area lakes, thus explaining strong bass, bluegill,
and crappie population. Crappie nets came up with fish averaging 9.5 inches in length. Walleye measured in gillnets varied in length from 11 inches – 26 inches. Also try the western edge for northern pike.

Fairmont Soccer Association
Fairmont Soccer Association continually strives to provide
a quality soccer program for all kids and adults that want to
play the game in a fair, fun, and safe environment. We seek
to educate and develop the whole person through the game
of soccer. We are affiliated with MYSA – Minnesota Youth
Soccer Association, the largest youth sports organization in
Minnesota. We present an inclusive philosophy that promotes a positive, fair, and safe family experience with the
game of soccer with emphasis on positive coaching and
sportsmanship. We do this all with volunteer time and talent.
Emphasis is placed on the education and training of volunteers to grow, develop, and operate a successful youth program.
Soccer was established as a Fairmont Community
Education and Recreation program in 1985 to provide an
inclusive recreational program primarily for kids ages 5-18 in
the greater Fairmont area. The recreational program is
structured to teach younger kids the basic skills with skill
games and short scrimmages. For kids 11 years and up, FSA
sponsors a spring competitive league through the Minnesota
Youth Soccer Association (MYSA). Since fall of 2006,
Fairmont High School has fielded six teams – varsity, Jr.
Varsity, and C squad (7th and 8th Grade) teams for both boys
and girls. For more information visit our website at www.fairmontsoccer.org.

Martin County Fair
The 145th Martin County Fair, one of Minnesota’s largest
county fairs, will be held August 16th – 22nd. The seven-day
event features over 150 commercial exhibitors, a large variety
of food concession stands, livestock and horse shows, regional livestock shows, open class and 4-H exhibits, and a large
midway. There will be a free children’s petting zoo, free entertainment in the park, and free parking daily.
On Tuesday come out and enjoy The Johnny Holm Band.
Leader and front man of the most widely known and traveled
band in America, Johnny Holm is the most entertaining
entertainer performing today. The show is dedicated to the
fans, and they do most of the entertaining. Mostly impromptu, the show moves with the speed of lightning and changes
direction as soon as "the pied piper" notices a lag. "Never a
dull moment" was never a more true description.
Wednesday come out and enjoy InPulse. InPulse creates a
powerful sound that features stunning solos, exceptional harmonic blend, and driving rhythms. Their performances showcase the beauty and versatility of the human voice, drawing
from virtually every genre of music - from Pop to Rock,
Country to Hip-Hop, and Jazz to R&B. INPULSE plays an
active part in the evolution of a cappella music through
dynamic, original compositions and inventive arrangements
of songs distinctive to the INPULSE sound. The group's artistic approach leaves little confusion as to their mission: To take
the a cappella "vocal band" sound into mainstream music and
bring genuine musical artistry to today's pop culture.
Thursday night come out and enjoy The Association. It all
started in 1965 with the breakup of one of the first folk rock
ensembles called, "The Men". What was originally an 11 member singing group ultimately became the six man band
named, "The Association!" In 1967, The Association made history being the first band anywhere to open a rock festival - the
now historic, Monterey Pop Festival.
One of the most successful bands to come out of the 60’s.
They’ve earned a number of achievement awards, as well as six
gold records and two platinum records. Their album, THE
ASSOCIATION GREATEST HITS (Warner Brothers), continues to be one of the longest best-selling albums in the history of the company.
Friday laugh out loud with Tina and Lena, two of the funniest, zaniest ladies you’ll ever meet. Their engaging variety
show is a rich blend of clever to cornball comedy, musical harmony and spirited antics …a celebration of the audience that
goes full blast in high gear from start to finish. Also playing
Friday will be The Wee Willy Band.
Country music star Randy Houser will be performing
Saturday night in Schmidtke Park. As illustrated in his breakthrough single, Randy Houser is a breathtaking vocalist with
fire and conviction at his core. The songs he has chosen by
other Nashville writers for this album are superb showcases
for the vocal side of his talent. In addition to "Anything Goes,"
they include the sensual "Strange" and the ultra-cool, groovesaturated "How Many Times," the latter featuring harmony
vocals by superstar Vince Gill.
Randy grew up in central Mississippi. He was born in
Jackson and raised in Lake. But his true musical foundation
was the artistry of his father. Papa Houser was a fairly well
known performer in the Jackson, Mississippi nightclub scene
and was also a first call studio musician.
There will be three talent shows during the fair and on
Tuesday night there will be a free pork feed. Races will be held
Friday night and there will be a Demo Derby on Sunday afternoon. For more information contact the Martin County Fair,
1300 Bixby Road, Fairmont, call 507-235-9576, or online at

Agriculture
Martin County Corn and Soybean Growers Association
In 2008, Martin County corn farmers harvested 41,890,000
bushels of corn from 236,500 acres, averaging 179 bushels
per acre. Because of Martin County’s strong production history, we have two 100 million gallon ethanol plants in the
county. Each requires about 40,000,000 bushels of corn
annually.
Martin County soybean producers harvested 7,703,000
bushels from 168,800 acres averaging 45.5 bushels per acre.
With a Cenex Harvest State soybean crushing facility located
on the northwest corner of Fairmont, the majority of the
beans are processed locally. This means higher local farm
values because of lower transportation costs.
The local impact of the crop value is amazing:
Corn:
41,890,000 bushels at $3.70/bushel =
$154,993,000
Soybeans:
7,703,000 bushels at $9.80/bushel =
$75,489,000
$230,482,000
This would be gross receipts and all production costs, fuel,
transportation costs and marketing all have to be deducted
from this figure to arrive at net or profit from producing corn
or soybeans.
It needs to be remembered that there are "multiplier effects"
for "indirect" agricultural income that are figured at 1.5
times the gross receipts. This refers to support industries
such as manufacturing, transportation, wholesale and retail
trade, services, construction, banking, insurances and real
estate. Basically every agricultural production job supports
1.5 jobs in related fields. This means that the $230,482,000
actually generates an additional $115,241,000 for the local
communities. These figures do not include sweet corn and
green peas for canning, small grains and alfalfa hay nor the
value of the local livestock industries.
Martin County Pork Producers
The purpose of the Martin County Pork Producers shall be
to provide direction on educational, promotional, and public
policy efforts regarding pork production to be carried out in
conjunction with the Minnesota Pork Producers Association
and Minnesota Pork Board.
The primary function of the Martin County Board of
Directors is to keep the local pork producers informed as to
the programs, activities, and policies. The County Board also
supports and promotes local activities like the Martin County
Fair Swine Show.
During the 2008 year the Martin County Pork Producers
awarded $2,250 in scholarships to the Martin County Pork
Ambassadors, marketed "Martin County Magic" spice in local
grocery stores, sponsored Farm Safety Day Camp and "Book
Bundles" with Agricultural content for metro classrooms.
Martin County Producers donated five hogs along with the
processing costs to provide approximately 900 pounds of
Pork to the Salvation Army Food Shelf.
Martin County farmers sold 1.8 million market hogs in
2008. A market hog will weigh about 270 pounds when it is
sold and it will be 5 1/2 to 6 months-old at that time. Martin
County ranks first in Minnesota for producing pigs. Martin
County is also ranked in the top 10 Counties in the US for
producing pork.
Gross income generated in 2008 from the sale of Martin
County hogs: $238 million (This is the income received by
the farmer before paying for any costs associated with raising
the pigs like feed and labor.) Annual economic contribution
to the Martin County Area from 2008 hog sales: $667 million
in total economic contribution. (This is the associated economic activity generated by having the Pork Industry in
Martin County. Examples would be equipment sales, trucking, feed, utilities, etc. Each $1 in gross income generates
another $2.80 in economic activity.)
Martin County pigs consumed approximately 20 million
bushels of corn in 2008 and were fed another 6.6 million
bushels of soybeans as soybean meal. Martin County typically will produce about 40 million bushels of corn and around
8 million bushels of soybeans in a typical year. So the Pork
industry consumes about 50% of the corn and 83% of the
soybeans produced in Martin County.
