One CP Kelco Quality Standard
CP Kelco is a world-wide operation, with manufacturing facilities and a customer base
which spans the globe. This reach requires that CP Kelco abides by one global quality
standard that does not vary by the location of the production facility or the customer
location. Producing consistent, defect-free, high performance ingredients is what differentiates
CP Kelco and creates a sustainable business.
The one CP Kelco Quality Standard ensures the production of safe, high quality ingredients for our customers. The
new global regulatory environment requires elevated compliance and harmonized audit procedures, and requires
accountability and visibility to external parties.
Marketing to regulated industries such food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics, requires compliance with current Good
Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs). Compliance to cGMPs, along with fully developed and audited HACCP plans,
established raw material certification and qualification procedures and participating in customer and third party audits
makes up the foundation of the One CP Kelco Quality Standard.
All CP Kelco manufacturing facilities sustain ISO 9001:2008 certification to ensure compliance to internationally
recognized quality management standards. The benefits of a valid ISO 9001:2008 certificate demonstrate that CP Kelco
follows the most internationally recognized quality management requirements.
GMA-SAFE audits are currently being conducted at all CP Kelco facilities. The GMA-SAFE Assessment is a highly
intensive audit process that provides sufficient information to any customer to determine whether the inspected facility
meets global recognized standards for quality systems and regulatory compliance.
Added focus is being placed on food safety as all CP Kelco facilities are audited for compliance to the Global Food

CP Kelco is the innovation leader in the production of polysaccharides by microbial fermentation, extraction from land and sea plants, and
modification of cellulose-based raw materials CP Kelco’s goal is to be the preferred partner for providing innovative products and solutions
through the use of nature-based chemistry.
Our products are derived from natural, renewable raw materials, and CP Kelco strives to provide these products with minimal processing or
modification. These products serve many functions, including suspension, stabilization, film forming, unique spray patterns, and gelation, as well
as providing a range of sensory and texture attributes.
Given this leadership position, CP Kelco has evolved into more than just an ingredient supplier. We pride ourselves on how, with a combination
of a vast product portfolio and our application expertise, we provide solutions to the most creative and difficult product design challenges.
CP Kelco understands how to consider manufacturing needs and consumer desires when selecting the most appropriate product from our extensive
portfolio. Many factors must be taken into consideration, including desired flow behavior or texture, required shelf-life, production equipment available,
compatibility with other ingredients and regulatory compliance. Rheology is defined as the study of the flow of matter: primarily liquid state, but also as
‘soft solids’ or solids under conditions in which they respond with plastic flow rather than deforming elasticity in response to an applied force.
Within the consumer products industry, rheology control is vital. However, selecting the most appropriate rheology modifier from the wide range
commercially available is far from straightforward. Many factors must be taken into consideration, including the desired flow behavior or texture, the
required shelf-life, the production equipment available, compatibility with other ingredients, regulatory compliance and environmental friendliness.
Designed to offer solutions across the consumer products spectrum, CP Kelco’s vast ingredient choices enable the most challenging - and creative household and personal care concepts to become consumer products.
Whether it’s suspending botanicals in the latest new-age bodywash, manipulating gel textures in air fresheners, improving the sprayability of tanning
products, or creating cleaners from bio-based materials, CP Kelco offers a portfolio of products and application expertise to suit the needs of
consumer products manufacturers worldwide.
A Little About Our Chemistries
Rheological Terms
Shear Stress: the amount of force/presure that is applied to a sample
in order to cause movement at some rate.
Shear Rate: the rate or speed of fluid movement.
Viscosity: the relationship of shear rate to the shear stress applied.
Newtonian rheology: at a given temperature, the viscosity measured
is constant as the shear rate vaires (examples are water and thin
motor oil). Newtonian fluids in rality are not very common. Most
fluids are Non-Newtonian; i.e. as the shear rate varies, the shear stress
does not vary proprotionally.
Pseudoplastic rheology: viscosity decreases as shear rate increases
(shear-thinning).
CEKOL® & FINNFIX®
Carboxymethyl Cellulose
CP Kelco’s grades of carboxymethyl cellulose
(CMC) are highly-purified, cold watersoluble polymers derived from cellulose.
Carboxymethyl cellulose is versatile, costeffective way to add viscosity.
Thixotropic rheology: rheology decreases over a measurable period
of time as shear rate increases (time-dependent shear-thinning).
CP Kelco offers the industry’s most extensive range of
viscosity grades, with flow properties ranging from nearly-Newtonian to
pseudoplastic. Depending on the grade, they can have either thixotropic
or non-thixotropic rheology.
Our products are derived from natural, renewable raw materials, and
CP Kelco strives to provide these products with minimal processing
or modification. These products serve many functions, including
suspension, stabilization, film forming, unique spray patterns, and
gelation, as well as providing a range of sensory and texture attributes.
By choosing the right CEKOL or FINNFIX type, the formulator has the
ability to achieve the desired rheology for any aqueous system, including
suspensions and emulsions. Besides controlling the rheology, CEKOL
and FINNFIX are known for excellent water retaining and film forming
capacity. FINNFIX CMC is widely used within the fabric care industry as
the anti-redeposit agent of choice in powder laundry detergents.

Carrageenan
KELTROL® & KELZAN®
Xanthan Gum
GENUVISCO® and GENUGEL®
Carrageenan products are a family of
sulphated polysaccharides extracted
from certain species of red seaweed Rhodophyceae.
KELTROL® and KELZAN® Xanthan Gums
are produced by a fermentation process
using the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris.
The composition and structure of xanthan gum
produced by commercial fermentation is identical
Xanthan gum’s pseudoplastic flow behavior provides high viscosities
By using the appropriate carrageenan product, the
formulator can create textures ranging from free-flowing liquids to
solid gels. In addition to offering standard types, CP Kelco works
in conjunction with customers to develop new products and
formulations for specific applications.

to the naturally occurring polysaccharide formed by Xanthomonas
campestris on plants belonging to the cabbage family.
viscosities at high shear rates to give good flow properties when
poured or pumped. The slight increase in viscosity resulting from
very low use levels imparts the sensation of enhanced body.
GENU® Pectin
KELCOGEL® Gellan Gum
KELCOGEL® Gellan Gum is a polysaccharide
produced by fermentation of a pure culture
of Sphingomonas elodea. The composition
and structure of native gellan gum produced
by commercial fermentation is identical to
the naturally occurring polysaccharide formed by
Sphingomonas elodea on plants of water lily varieties.
The uniqueness of KELCOGEL is the ability to function while
contributing minimal viscosity via the formation of a uniquely
functioning “fluid gel” network. This network, consisting of a
low concentration of weakly associated molecules, is extremely
pseudoplastic. At rest, the fluid gel has a very high apparent viscosity
resulting in excellent suspension of insoluble ingredients. Because of
the weak molecular associations, the network is easily disrupted upon
agitation, resulting in a low viscosity and a smooth pour.
This multi-functional hydrocolloid can be used at low levels in a
wide variety of products that require gelling, texturizing, stabilizing,
suspending, spraying, film-forming and structuring.
KELCOGEL gellan gum is available in two grades: high and low acyl
content, which form soft and firm gels, respectively.
GENU® Pectins are partially methyl
esterified, anionic polysaccharides derived
from naturally occurring structural
components in fruits and vegetables.
Because of its traditional uses in food
products, pectin is well known by consumers and
accepted as label friendly. The major commercial raw
material source is citrus peel, although CP Kelco also produces
pectin derived from sugar beets.
There are two basic types of GENU pectin, differing in Degree of
methyl Esterification (DE):
•
High methylester (HM) pectin, DE higher than 50, forms gels and structured liquids under conditions of low pH and low water activity (for example, at high concentrations of sugar, sorbitol or glycerol).
•
Low methylester (LM) pectin, DE lower than 50, forms gels in
the presence of divalent cations, such as calcium and magnesium.

xanthan gum
The exceptional thickening and stabilizing
characteristics of CP Kelco’s xanthan gum family
provides a versatile performance for a range of
consumer products. Xanthan gum solutions are
pseudoplastic. At rest, they are viscous. When mixed,
pumped, sprayed or poured, the solution’s thin. Once
shear is removed, the solution recovers to starting viscosity
almost immediately. Xanthan gum has outstanding stability to
pH, salt and/or heat, and excellent compatibility with other ingredients. It
is readily soluble in both hot and cold water. CP Kelco’s xanthan gum grades are specifically
designed for use as hydrophilic colloids to thicken and stabilize emulsions, foams and suspensions.
Unique combinations of properties allow CP Kelco xanthan gum products to perform beyond
the limits of many other commercially available hydrocolloids.
The KELTROL CG xanthan gum family is designed specifically for cosmetic and personal
care micro requirements. All KELTROL CG products are tested to ensure compliance with
the purity criteria defined in the monographs for xanthan gum in the current editions of the
US Pharmacopoeia/National Formulary (USP/NF) Japanese Pharmaceutical Excipients (JPE),
and European Pharmacopoeia (EP). Formulators can choose from, a family of KELTROL CG
products designed to meet specific needs and processing conditions.

current USP Monograph.
Structure of Xanthan Gum
Xanthan gum is a high molecular weight polysaccharide produced
via fermentation. Its unique functionality compared to other commercial
polysaccharides is provided by the actual structure of
the xanthan gum molecule. The polymer backbone is made up
of -1,4-linked D-glucose residues and, therefore, is identical to
the cellulose molecule. A trisaccharide branch containing one
glucuronic acid unit between two mannose units is linked to
every other glucose unit at the C(3) position.

CEKOL® grades are stable over a wide pH range and can be used in products within a pH
range of 4.0 - 10.0. All CEKOL grades have a purity of minimum 99.5% and fully comply with
FCC and BP/EP/USP regulations.
Specially designed CEKOL toothpaste grades have very good water binding properties and provide a thick mouthfeel, as well as
very good process versatility and compatibility to a wide variety of formulations and processes.
FINNFIX® CMC is a proven anti-redeposition aid. The use of FINNFIX CMC in powder detergents is one of the product’s
oldest and most well-known applications. FINNFIX functions as a soil-suspending, anti-redeposition agent in powder detergent
formulas. The pH of the wash water and the presence of anionic and non-ionic surfactants do not affect the adsorption of
FINNFIX. During the rinse cycle, FINNFIX desorbs from the fabric surface, as a result of the reduced ionic strength. Certain
types of FINNFIX swell on contact with water, allowing them to function as tablet disintegrants.
The Best Choices table on the right is meant to provide ideas on how to get started. CP Kelco offers an extensive range of
CEKOL and FINNFIX products beyond what is listed to meet specific customer demands.

KELCOGEL
gellan gum
®
KELCOGEL® gellan gum is a water-soluble
polysaccharide produced by fermentation. This
multifunctional gelling agent can be used alone or
in combination with other products to produce a
wide variety of interesting textures.
KELCOGEL gellan gums are available in two types: low acyl
and high acyl.
Low acyl gellan gum forms firm, non-elastic, brittle gels. High acyl gellan gum forms soft, very
elastic, non-brittle gels. Combining and varying the ratios of the two forms of gellan gum
produces a wide variety of textures. Both low acyl and high acyl grades can be used at low

a smooth, homogenous, pourable structured liquid or “fluid gel.” Fluid gels are extremely
pseudoplastic and highly efficient at suspending a wide variety of items including solids and
liquids of differing densities. Suspension occurs without significantly impacting viscosity.
Gentle agitation of a weak gellan gum gel, after it is set, is also sufficient to form a smooth, pourable gel. This means that fluid
gels can be formed using standard filling operations.
KELCOGEL CG products are manufactured to food GMPs and are tested to ensure compliance with the purity criteria
defined in the monograph for gellan gum in the current edition of the US Pharmacopia/National Formulary.
Structure of Gellan Gum
The molecular structure of gellan gum is a linear chain based on repeating glucose, rhamnose and glucuronic acid units. In its
native or high acyl form, two acyl substituents – acetate and glycerate – are present. Both substituents are located on the same
glucose residue, and on average, there is one glycerate per repeat and one acetate per every two repeats. In low acyl gellan gum,
the acyl groups are removed completely. The acyl groups have a profound influence on gel characteristics. The high acyl form
produces soft, elastic, non-brittle gels, whereas the low acyl form produces firm, non-elastic, brittle gels.

GENU
pectin
®
GENU® pectin is first and foremost a gelling
agent and is used to impart a gelled texture
to products, traditionally used in food products
such as jams and jellies. The gelling ability is further
utilized where stabilization of multi-phases is required,
either in the final product or at an intermediate stage in
the process.
GENU pectins are finding increasing use, particularly as gelling agents, but also as viscosity

builders, protective colloids and stabilizers in a variety of consumer products.
CP Kelco works in close contact with the industry to develop new pectin types to meet specific technology and regulatory
requirements in the marketplace. To that end, GENU pectin USP/100 and GENU pectin USP/200 are tested to comply with
Chapters 61/62 of the current USP monograph.
Another unique property of GENU pectin is the ability to adjust the skin back to its natural pH when used in products such as
creams, lotions, shaving products, or as a complimentary treatment following harsh products (such as bleaching, dipilatory and
acne products). GENU pHresh™ pectin can be used to help protect the skin’s acid mantle and provide a normalizing effect to
skin pH after being exposed to harsh conditions like washing or abrasion. Unlike other acidic materials such as alpha Hydroxy
acid or citric acid, which penetrate the skin and cause irritations, GENU pectin is a longchain polysaccharide which means it is an
exceptionally mild acid.
Structure of Pectin
Pectin is a purified carbohydrate product obtained by aqueous extraction of appropriate edible plant material – usually citrus
peel. Pectin consists mainly of galacturonic acid and galacturonic acid methyl ester units forming linear polysaccharide chains and is
normally classified according to its Degree of Methoxylation/Esterification (DE).
There are three classifications of pectin:
• HM (High Methoxyl)
• LMC (Low Methoxyl Conventional)
• LMA (Low Methoxyl Amidated)
These pectins vary in their reactivity with calcium and what is required to form a gel. HM pectins require a certain amount of
soluble solids and a low pH for gelation. LMC and LMA are less dependent on pH and soluble solids, but do require the presence
of calcium or other divalent ions for gelation. LMA pectins provide processing tolerance and a controllable gel performance, while
LMC pectins provide a softer, more shear tolerant system.
