ancient and modern. (and five teenagers who actually stayed awake and are already going
to see it again)” – Catherine O’Grady on A Midsummer Night’s Dream
“We’ve been subscribers to NAC Theatre for about 12 years and have enjoyed every year
of it. There have been some wonderful productions. But I think last year and this one have
been the most consistently excellent and exciting.” – Nigel Chippindale
“After every performance, we leave the theatre deep in

To celebrate the NAC’s 40th anniversary, we’re bringing you the very
best of Canadian, international and classical theatre. Our new season
is filled with passion and love, courage and song. It’s a lineup that opens
with a five-time Tony Award-winning musical and presents Dickens’
A Christmas Carol for the first time on the NAC stage. It sees the
return of former Artistic Director Marti Maraden at the helm of a world premiere. It brings a special musical theatre
presentation from Yellowknife—our first and long-overdue opportunity to work directly with artists from the North.
A very special part of this 40th anniversary season is the introduction of a national company of actors from across
Canada—many of them already familiar to NAC audiences and now to be a fixture of the NAC English Theatre,
appearing this season in A Christmas Carol and Mother Courage and Her Children. Look forward to opportunities to
engage directly with these outstanding performers through live forums and web events.
When we say, “There’s a theatre in here,” we mean within each of us. This is a playbill that celebrates live theatre’s
capacity to catch both our conscience and our need for pleasure and delight. And so we extend you this invitation for
2009-10: to play.

Theatre is an experience. It entertains and inspires. It creates opportunities to
discover—to explore and encounter.
This special 40th anniversary season at the NAC English Theatre delivers
an experience unlike any other. A Broadway smash musical. A 20th-century
masterwork. An early Shakespearean comedy. Our 2009-10 lineup of plays is
a celebration of the stage. Whether you come for thought-provoking works or
performances that lift your spirits, you’ll find the experience you’re looking for.
The NAC English Theatre 2009-10 season. It’s
“Let’s disappear for a while into the
decadent world of the 1920s. When the
champagne flowed while the caviar
chilled and all the world was a party.”
– Man in Chair
A Broadway star. A desperate producer. Gangsters, hi-jinks and madcap
misunderstandings. It’s a toe-tapping trip back to the jazz era and the golden
age of 1920s musicals—with a modern twist. A great kickoff to the NAC English Theatre’s
40th anniversary season! Fast and funny, The Drowsy Chaperone is the first Canadian musical to win
five Broadway Tony Awards. Perhaps the Globe and Mail summed it up best when it called the show
“big, brassy and stupidly fun... you won’t be disappointed.” Not to be missed.

A miser’s last chance for redemption comes in the shape of three strange
Christmas spirits. For the first time, a faithful telling of Charles Dickens’ cherished holiday
story comes to the NAC English Theatre stage. This lush period piece is presented on the full
Shakespearean thrust stage—where the transformation of cold-hearted Ebenezer Scrooge
is brought brilliantly to life by gifted actor Stephen Ouimette.

A mother turns war profiteer in this celebrated masterpiece about struggle,
opportunism and survival at any cost. Featuring 12 songs by Bertolt Brecht,
Paul Dessau and Kurt Weill. “If ever a time was ripe for a revival of Mother Courage and
Her Children, it would seem to be now,” wrote the New York Times. Tanja Jacobs tackles the
demanding role of Mother Courage in what some consider the greatest play of the 20th century—
about a resourceful woman during the Thirty Years’ War who plays both sides for gain in the effort to
keep her business and her family intact.

dazzling debut play was the hit of the Luminato Festival and The Magnetic North Festival in 2008.

Theatre research and
development at the
National Arts Centre
English Theatre
We’re committed to providing Canada with an
active, relevant national theatre—by fostering the
creation and production of new Canadian theatrical
works, and by offering meaningful professional
development opportunities to Canadian artists.
We enact this commitment through a number
of programs including The Ark, The Atelier and
Playwrights in Residence.
Through The Atelier, Artistic Director Peter Hinton and Company Dramaturg Paula Danckert travel
across the country to connect with playwrights in their home communities. One such visit—to Pond
Inlet, Nunavut—contributed to the creation of one of this season’s featured works, Night.
The Atelier focuses on dramaturgy, development workshops and readings of scripts commissioned
or in development by the NAC in partnership with theatres across Canada. Watch for upcoming
announcements of play readings and Atelier activities throughout the season. Subscribers are
first to learn of all play development activities.

Made possible with assistance from the Theatre Section, the Aboriginal Arts Secretariat and the
Equity Office of the Canada Council for the Arts.
Playwrights are at the heart of theatre development. The NAC English Theatre is delighted to
partner with the Canada Council for the Arts to offer a fourth season of the Playwrights in Residence
program, which every year invites two playwrights of Aboriginal or culturally diverse background to
join the English Theatre company.
In 2009-2010, renowned poet, novelist and essayist Dionne Brand and Kevin Loring—whose Where
the Blood Mixes is part of this season’s Studio series—will serve as NAC Playwrights in Residence.
Artists of enormous talent and vision, these two writers will participate in various projects, and
audiences will have an opportunity to meet and speak with them at events.

The Magnetic North Theatre Festival brings some of the nation’s top artists
together to share their stories and build a stronger community. This annual
gathering consistently challenges and expands our national vision of what
Canadian theatre can be.
And on top of that, two events
around two of The Drowsy
Chaperone’s co-creators, Don
McKellar and Greg Morrison.
On June 5, they will join Peter
Hinton for a Hinterview and
on June 6, they will lead the
audience in a choir practice
singalong to the music of
The Drowsy Chaperone.
Ottawa audiences can enjoy offerings from Vancouver to St. John’s: the uplifting Skydive; the
macabre Nevermore: The Imaginary Life and Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe; the sensual puppetry
of The Erotic Anguish of Don Juan; the heartfelt tribute to our nation’s veterans in Jake’s Gift; the view
of the Indian Diaspora in Letters to My Grandma / Pyaasa; the literary masterwork in Eternal Hydra;
and the astonishing choral work of Fear of Flight.
But a national community can only ever have resonance when it is local at the same time. In Ottawa,
the festival presents The Rideau Project / Project Rideau which brings Ottawa theatre artists working
in both French and English together, a rarity even in our nation’s capital. For the first time a student
production from the University of Ottawa will be presented and Trudeau Stories shares an intimate
portrait of one of Canada’s most famous Prime Ministers.
.........................................................
Our work with local community building doesn’t end with Ottawa. No sooner do we wrap up in Ottawa
than we begin drawing the nation’s attention to the vibrant cities of Kitchener-Waterloo in 2010 and
work year round to build a local community in a national context.

ticket policies
Subscription series are purchased and issued subject to the policies, rules and regulations of the
National Arts Centre. All remittances except post-dated cheques will be deposited immediately
upon receipt, without guaranteeing acceptance of order as requested. Since subscribers are paying
less than full Box Office prices, no refunds will be made or credit vouchers issued except in the case
of the cancellation of a performance. In the event of a cancellation, you have one year in which to
redeem your tickets at the NAC Box Office (in person or by mail), after which the tickets become null
and void. National Arts Centre policy requires that every person have a ticket in order to be admitted
to a performance. This policy applies to everyone, including children and infants.
– Ticket prices include GST and Facility Fee where applicable.
– The Facility Fee supports the maintenance of the National Arts Centre.
Programs and casting may be modified or cancelled without notice, and no guarantee can be given
as to the presentation of the events announced.

We are delighted to welcome more and more patrons to the NAC; however, increased attendance can
create parking challenges. Regrettably, the NAC CANNOT GUARANTEE a parking spot even to our
valued subscribers. The NAC parking garage is a first-come, first-served public lot with 920 spaces.
When all our stages are busy, or a large function or public event is taking place, the parking garage
fills up very quickly. We encourage you to arrive early if you prefer the convenience and proximity of
the NAC garage. Please also visit our website at www.nac-cna.ca for a list of public parking lots
near the NAC.
