DeAnza College Case Study Innovative, High Performing, Solar Tracking June 8, 2012 Presentation Outline DeAnza College’s Project Objectives Meeting DeAnza College’s Project Objectives Integration with District’s Environmental Education Program 2 Project’s Objectives Maximize Utility Cost Savings and Rebates for the District Integrate with Existing Campus Clean Energy Program Complement Campus Architecture and Functions, Including – Monthly Flea Market – Autocross Minimize Disruptions to the Campus Deliver Compelling Environmental Savings Accommodate Electric Vehicle Charging Incorporate an Educational Component for Students & Faculty 3 DeAnza College’s Sustainability Committment “De Anza College has long been committed to environmental sustainability. Through the work of its College Environmental Advisory Group (CEAG), De Anza in 2007 became the first community college in the nation to develop its own Sustainability Management Plan to guide continual improvement. Significant recent improvements include completely biodegradable containers and utensils in the cafeteria, drought-tolerant landscaping and weatherresponsive irrigation on the grounds. The installation of photovoltaic arrays on campus will produce almost half a million dollars annually in electricity savings…” 4 DeAnza College’s Sustainability Committment “… Four of De Anza's new buildings have been certified as meeting national LEED building standards for environmental sustainability. The college's Environmental Studies Department, housed in the Kirsch Center for Environmental Studies, was the first "green" demonstration building in the California community colleges. The department has developed an extensive sustainability curriculum leading to certificates and degrees in four program areas.” 5 DeAnza College Flea Market 6 DeAnza College Autocross 7 The Solution: SunPower’s High Efficiency Elevated Tracker 1,146 kWp capacity, generating 2,290,000 kWh/year $1.3M in PG&E Rebate (over 5 years) $11.9M in Electric Savings (over 25 years) DeAnza College 1 MW SunPower Solar Electric Elevated Tracker Under Shade Tracking the Sun 8 9 10 SunPower Cells SunPower’s all-back contact, n-type solar cell is patented, hard to replicate and provides industry-leading efficiencies of 22.4% in production lines.
