February 2014 Programme of Events - 2014 Dear Members, Reflecting on the past year, I am proud to report that our membership has increased by over 50%. Our Committee is determined to keep building up our membership base through 2014, so if you have friends who have not yet joined, then please encourage them to do so. We will be continuing the free membership until July for those who wish to join. Hobart turned out to be great venue for our Teams and Championship Events and an excellent time was had by all participants. Of our 22 teams, 3 were winners, some came 2nd or 3rd, and the rest had a great time. Results of the Individuals are published in this copy of Vetscore and on the ‘net, with 2 noticeable winners being Mary Gordon who once again won the Teams’ Event and three other events contested. Igor Jovanovic showed outstanding form to beat a strong field in the 45 Singles. To cater for our new and regular members we anticipate having more tournaments and Social days, so look out for these days on our calendar. Country tournaments are great weekends and the country towns always have a lot of attractions, so if you haven't played in one of these, it could be a pleasant surprise and experience for you. If you are interested please look up our Programme of Events as there are many more tournaments coming up in the future. In Hobart I had the pleasure of accepting the TSA “Player of the Year” award on behalf of our World Dates R/R or Tournament Feb 7-9 Feb 15-16 Feb 22-23 Mar 7-9 Mar 29-30 Apr 12-13 Apr 12-13 Apr 18-20 Apr 25-27 May 2-4 May 3-4 May 16-18 May 16-18 May 24-25 June 7-9 June 21-22 July 4-6 July 12-13 July 26-27 Aug 1-4 Aug 15-17 Aug 22-24 Sep 12-14 Sep 20-21 Oct 3-6 Ulladulla Summer Games Val Crook Newcastle Topspin Tennis Nat 7 Richard Nicholls Southern Districts, Leumeah Nat 7 Craig Barrett Walcha Seniors R/Robin Betty Sweeney Gosford Seniors March Tournament Hadrian Cullum Narooma Combined Doubles R/R Brian Carmichael Howe Park Grass, Singleton Nat 7 Mark Rix Easter Fundraiser, Newcastle Frank Kitcher Gloucester Seniors Nat 7 Ruth Johnson Inverell Seniors R/Robin John Williams Jim Elphick TC, Wagga Wagga Nathan McNeill Picton Seniors R/Robin Nat 7 Alison Radford T’s Resort Port Macquarie Nat 7 Te Truong West Tamworth Seniors Bruce Murden Newcastle Mixed Teams Robyn Castle Lake Macquarie Seniors Nat 7 Keith Williams Cessnock Seniors Nat 7 Irene Crowley Manning River, Taree Chris Johnson Werris Creek Seniors R/Robin Nat 7 Gary Cohen Forster Seniors R/R Nat 6 Judy Halpin Muswellbrook Park Seniors Val Angel Eurobodalla, Moruya R/R Scott Colbourne West Port Macquarie Nat 7 Jo Clarke Gunnedah Seniors Duncan McGregor State Championships ITF Cat 2 Robyn Castle Eastwood Thornleigh District Courts, Pennant Hills Kiama Inaugural Seniors R/R Dave Graham Merimbula Annual Seniors Nat 6 John Rheinberger Dubbo Paramount Seniors Glenn Armstrong Raworth, Hunter Tennis Resort Linda Bullent Bathurst Carillon City TEAMS Andrew Mitton Nelson Bay Seniors TBA Oct 11-12 Oct 13 -16 Oct 18-19 Nov 1-2 Nov 15-16 Dec 5-7 Contact Phone 44 544 160 0412 089 777 0410 635 811 6777 2120 0459 485 564 0499 736 669 0419 996 553 0428 545 038 0418 763 041 0422 705 806 0438 599 835 4677 2072 6584 0144 6765 5575 9624 7075 0412 157 757 4938 3190 0432 788 901 0427 177 025 6554 9120 0408 436 443 4473 6180 0427 922 075 0439 722 005 9624 7075 0413 546 339 0438 928 516 0428 536 336 0447 800 206 0419 499 467 4981 4090 Tournaments in BOLD are for AUSTRALIAN RANKING points - NRT Social Days and Sydney Metro days will be added to this calendar as they are confirmed. A group of our younger members from Gosford Tennis Club is running a Round Robin tournament from March 29-30. We would be pleased if they can have your support. It would be great if members could encourage newcomers to attend – since it is within close proximity to the cities of both Newcastle and Sydney! To cut down costs, why not get a few friends to hire a house for the weekend, and make it a great social event as well? Champion Doug Corbett. Well done, Doug—not only a Champion but a real gentleman. The Committee is always open to suggestions that you may wish to discuss. Also if there are any prospective sponsors out there, it would be great to hear from you. I would like to wish our Seniors the best of luck whilst competing overseas, and may they all have a safe, successful and enjoyable trip . During a Tuesday Ladies Comp I met Robyn Castle who gave us some brochures about a veterans carnival in January. At first we thought it was just for all the "top" players and not for us. But Robyn said we could make up our own teams and have a lot of fun... we thought why not give it a go? We arrived in Hobart sat 11th Jan and raced off to Port Arthur for the afternoon for the girls in the team who had not been there. Great weather and beautiful surrounds meant a pleasant afternoon. We found our apartment at Sandy Bay and settled in for the week. Sunday saw us walking around Hobart city..Battery Point and Constitution Docks before we found our way to Rosney tennis centre 10 minutes away, for our team hit. We met great people from the club who made us feel really welcome. Then off to the Domain Centre Centre for registration, we met the huge NSW team in the stands, were given a goody bag (with chocolate sample, jelly beans and lip balm, water bottle, luggage tag) and took some great photos on centre court pretending we had just played Sam Stosur. Monday saw us at the Cadbury factory at 9am when they opened, to purchase our secret weapon (energy bars for the week) Cadbury chocolate... We then started the competition at 10.40-1.10 playing the Qld team who were a delight and great tennis players all from Redland Bay tennis club. We bought bbq salmon and salad from the club for $6 and enjoyed the break before we were back on court at 4pm-6.30 to play the other NSW team from Albury. A quick drive home, a change and we were at our State dinner in a city restaurant. Another great event with delicious food and I heard during the week talking to the other teams we had one of the best dinners...thanks Robyn.... Tuesday the weather warmed up and we were now at Glenorchy Courts for an early start of 8am-10.30. Lots of delicious sweets and sandwiches were made by the club for sale at very reasonable prices.. we played WA in the morning and then off to MONA to check out the Art. In the afternoon the weather was clocked at 36 degrees and after one set, one of our pair felt sick with the heat so they swapped and the rest of our team continued on. Fitness was surely tested that day... We then went home changed and headed off for a ghost tour of Hobart which lasted over 2 hours (8.30-11pm) but well worth the price, a great adventure around Battery Point. Wednesday we found ourselves at the Domain Tennis Centre again but this time playing on synthetic clay courts which was interesting and we were playing against the young Tassie team of big hitters. What a match, we were at this stage equal 2nd with Tassie on the table. The older team (us) just squeezed through the match winning by 1 game, 4 sets all. We again showered and dressed and raced off for another adventure - Louisa's walk (2hours) around the Cascades brewery getting to know the history of the Cascades Female Factory (more women were held here than men in Port Arthur) a brilliant drama held in the open, we loved it. Then off to Richmond to wander through the historic streets, we would see other teams wherever we went, a real friendly atmosphere all over the Apple Isle. Thursday saw our section split. We had realised this was a competition of attrition..... those who won must be the teams who could still field a team by Friday. Two of our players helped another team who had injuries and so our team of 4 played 8 sets that day but had a great result at Kingston only losing 11 games all day. We also managed another adventure to the Shot Tower and Devonshire tea... another drive to touristy train selling sweets and all kinds of antiques and European foods. Dinner at Fish Frenzy was another highlight.. so fresh and delicious! Friday saw us into the finals (35-49) of our first carnival, and very excited, our team had lasted and were still all standing. We found ourselves pitted against the QLD team in a State of Origin type match, we had all become really good friends throughout the week and so looked forward to the challenge, they never lost a match. The weather was humid for the first 2 sets and we had some great tennis, unfortunately we lost the final but had such a great time we all agreed to come and try again. We loved meeting so many like minded people who just LOVE playing competitive tennis mixed with touring the historical and tourist sites of Hobart. We created some beautiful memories and met some beautiful people and hope to see our new friends next year in Canberra 5-9th Jan. After a week of great tennis we concluded with a Gala Dinner Dance (Presentation Dinner). We all swapped our sweaty tennis gear and sandshoes for some sequinned sophistication, sometimes called “bling” and high heels, even though our feet and especially toes were crying out for freedom. We attended the Gala event at the Hobart City Hall which was decorated beautifully with balloons, in the shape of the Tennis Seniors logo and we danced the night away to a live band. We all assured our new found friends we would be back for more next year. Saturday morning was for a sleep-in and breakfast at Salamanca Markets where we again met all the tennis girls out and about before our flights home. Others stayed to play more tennis in the following week. Our team consisted of - L to R: Carol Ryan, Monique Spiller, Lusi Harper, Regina Schlemmer, Elizabeth Campbell, Sue Blackman 3 Robyn’s Moat S ome of our esteemed members passed a magic milestone late in 2013! Two such people are Peg Hoysted and Ray Reay. Peg celebrated in various ways, tennis parties, lunches and a family Zoo trip with grandchildren and great grandchildren! Her celebrations extended for a couple of weeks! But why not? Ray took his wife June’s ashes with him on a flight to Antarctica, on New Year’s Eve, his actual birthday, and was featured on the TV News! His family also celebrated with him at home a few days later. He’s something of a B daredevil – he took a “Red Baron” flight a few years ago for another birthday! One more thing – Ray bought every Kids’ Cancer Project Bear (7) and donated them to Wollongong Hospital, in honour of June. Welcome,to all these New Members! NOTE: Both these players participated at the Australian Championships in Hobart! (Peg was in the Finals of both Singles and Doubles!) However, in the Teams’ week she had to borrow Pat’s sandshoes! Oops Cheerio Corner est wishes to all our friends who have been experiencing ill health recently. John Day is presently in Liverpool Hospital, struggling with cancer treatment. To his wife Dutch, we extend our thoughts and prayers that she will have the fortitude to keep supporting him at this difficult time. Ken Taylor went to hospital late last year and has come home minus one lung! We wish him well in his recovery, and to Faye as well, who is looking after him. His eyesight is also troubling him...as it is with Doug Corbett who has had a couple of operations on his watery eyes…makes it a bit tricky to see the tennis ball, eh Doug! Back problems forced Tony Harkin to have surgery on his return from Hobart, but we hear that he is recovering well, and planning to make the trip to Norfolk Island! Graham Waller went in to Westmead Private for 2 short operations on his heart, and had 16 days there, with the second op. still pending! He hopes to have it over and done within the next few weeks. He wants to be back to form for Interdistrict, so we hope he will be! Kim Blackburne has struggled with her recurring knee problem since returning from Hobart, plus a hairline fracture of a bone I can hardly spell. She is getting around on crutches – that’s when she ventures out of bed! She says it’s easier to stay there! Preparing to go to Norfolk Island, Mike Hook has hit a snag, with another operation to remove a Melanoma from his foot. A few weeks in a fashionable “moon boot” and he says he will recover just in time! Another torn medial meniscus (as with a few of our members) is challenging Carol Campling, who had trouble with movement and knee pain in Tassie. She has to see a Specialist on March 5, so we wish her well. From Les Darcy, Newcastle: “Unable to play tennis at present, had hernia operation last Oct, saw surgeon last week have inflamed groin tendons, must rest. I am sure that you will appreciate how frustratingly keen I am to get back on the vets circuit.” Best wishes, Les! A cheery “hello” also to both Bob McWhinnie and Bruce Burns who are having ongoing Chemotherapy. Also to Ian Fisher, who is in “medical mode” after a fantastic effort in Hobart in the winning 75Men’s team.....who along with John Whittaker did not drop a set all week! Awesome! Tennis was in the family. Allan was proud to be the nephew of the famous Australian tennis player and 1933 Wimbledon champion, Jack Crawford, who was his mother’s brother. In 1939 Allan’s father built grass tennis courts in Albury, NSW, and ran a club where many future champions played, including Margaret Smith (later Court) and Rex Hartwig (Allan’s very successful doubles partner). Kendall and Hartwig were the first country pair to win the national junior doubles title, and eventually won 38 doubles titles together. Allan was coached by his father, although he used to declare that he was “uncoachable” with his unusual slices and chops on both forehand and backhand. His father was also a musician, performing in cinema orchestras, and obviously passed on some musical genes to his son. When he was 15, during the Second World War, Allan came to Sydney to attend The Scots’ College, and lived in his uncle Jack Crawford’s home in Bondi. In tennis, Allan won the 1946 NSW Schoolboys Singles Championship. In 1947 he had a magnificent final year in the juniors, winning the Australian, NSW and Victorian junior doubles titles with Rex Hartwig. A new chapter in Allan’s life began when he went to the University of Sydney. Allan loved personalities, little expecting that he would himself become one in the course of time. But even then, he moved among the university elite with grace and wit. He had emerged from his earlier, not so happy, university experience as a Medical student, to being what he was naturally, a student of the Humanities. Literature and History were his chosen favourites, but when the chips were down to find subjects whose lectures were scheduled for the late – with an emphasis on late – morning, he was obliged one year to select Zoology 1; whereupon his friends were obliged to help him classify shells and creatures so that his assignments could be lodged on time. Allan could be described as a leisurely student by day and a frenetic worker by night. He had a unique dilemma when it came to exams. While most of us could not sleep until the exam was over, Allan, having spent the night cramming, could not wake up in time to sit the exam. As a result he became a master of the Post, and took the entire allowable time span of nine years to stroll through his Bachelor of Arts degree. Allan had many groups of friends who met at parties occasionally, but were largely independent of each other. There were friends from Scots College, where he had his secondary schooling; tennis friends; friends from St. Andrew’s College where he resided; and now, at University, a new group with whom he shared, I think, his most intimate life. We skipped lectures to watch him play tennis, table tennis and squash, and applauded him when he was awarded a rare triple Blue, receiving the award for Lawn Tennis for the years 1948, 1949, 1950 and 1951, and for both Squash and Table Tennis in 1951. Allan, in turn, gave us his wit, his enthusiasm, and his endearing friendship. This core group had several ritual meeting places, the first of which was, as described, Manning House and the University campus itself. The Monte Carlo Revue Allan combined his interests in tennis and theatre by directing a revue at Monte Carlo for some years, in connection with the tennis championships. Australian tennis players who appeared included Bob Carmichael, Bob Howe, John Newcombe, and Fred Stolle. Monte Carlo was the first tournament of the European season. Allan wrote sketches, and produced and acted in the cabaret. In this he drew on his theatrical experience at university and his time as a repertory actor in England. The Monte Carlo show became more famous than the tournament, and was filmed by British, Italian and German TV. The ABC In 1965 Allan retired from the tennis circuit for a career in broadcasting. He worked for the ABC’s Education Department and in 1966 became the first producer of Play School, still the longest running Australian TV children’s show. Allan was associated with it for 20 years. In 2006, largely because of the long-time impact of Play School, the Bulletin magazine chose him as one of the 100 most influential Australians. In later years, when he was in his 50s, Allan was a prominent player in international veterans’ tennis, partnering Norma Marsh and Alan Bailey. In 1983 he had an extended tour of Europe and the United States, playing the veterans circuits. He won 36 national titles in a dozen different countries. In 1986 he was ranked No. 2 in the world in the veterans’ 55-year group and was the Australian national champion in that age group. In 1995 he was ranked No.5 in the ITF Veterans Rankings for Men’s 65. His long-term tennis doubles partner, Alan Bailey sent the following message: Allan on the “Play School” set with Benita Collings and Don Spencer Allan and I have had a close tie through tennis since our junior days. In those days he would stay on the court all day, never tired, and was unbeatable using his slice, lob and dropshots. During a 1959−60 overseas tour, Allan helped to organise a tennis circuit that included Wimbledon. Also we played together very successfully throughout Europe. Since 1970 until about ten years ago we had many doubles wins in senior events both overseas and here in Australia. We were close tennis pals and shared our sporting lives with enduring friendship. Mave and my memories of Allan include sitting at an outside café after a tennis match where Allan would light up his first cigarette of about six over one cup of coffee! This was the usual routine until he had emergency surgery for bowel cancer and there were no cigarettes after that. Allan had a remarkable memory for all his tennis matches played over more than 50 years. He could recall the place, whether overseas or at home, and whom he played and even remember the score. He could entertain you for many hours recalling the plays and skits he produced after the tournaments in Monte Carlo where he had the players dress up and take part. These are only a few of the memories that will stay with us forever — mind you, no doubt he will have the angels soon working on a heavenly version of Play School or perhaps he may even arrange a tennis match or two! You will be missed greatly, dear friend. Rest in peace. I had a huge passion for tennis and played everything and anything that I possibly could. I have played Junior Tennis, Junior Teams’ Tennis, Custom Credit, representing my club playing Tournament tennis with John and a few others. As far as being involved in clubs and Committees, my first role was Publicity Officer for the Delungra Tennis Club when I was 19. From then I was involved in taking junior teams and kids away and became a member on the Committee of the Inverell Tennis Club. After leaving Inverell we moved to Alstonville and with my children I have been involved in Junior Tennis taking on numerous small roles with North East Tennis. I Left Alstonville and moved to Port Macquarie and I became involved with Westport Tennis Club, where I’ve been most productive – still involved with North East Tennis at that stage. I persuaded the club to join Tennis NSW and formed a Junior arm at the club. My kids have veered away from tennis and now my role is Treasurer of the club, focusing on the growth of tennis seniors within the club and building up membership. Jo was honoured and overwhelmed by the whole experience. In a speech, she thanked all her peers for their support and for making her feel so welcome. She spoke of a tennis moment at a recent tournament in Dubbo where she played mixed doubles with her very first tennis coach (John Williams – Inverell) who had coached her from a young age and she made the comment ‘who would have thought 40 years ago that we would be playing tennis today in a Veterans’ tournament?’ Tennis is my life and my passion! I love my club and all my friends from all over NSW and Australia. I was truly honoured to receive such an award and I would encourage players to get involved. Tennis offers so much to your quality of life. I was very proud to represent my club and my state.” Mick Dunn Mick is a popular joint recipient of Senior of the Year. He has only been playing in the seniors for a short period but has played in nearly every tournament since joining as well as attending many functions. Mick’s friendly demeanour has ensured he has made many friends in seniors’ tennis. Since retirement from QANTAS, Mick has demonstrated that he has acquired many “people skills” which he uses in everyday life. This is particularly evident in the way in which he sends out “positive vibes” to all he meets. One member commented “we need more people like Mick around..he always makes you feel good. He has a way of making people feel important, and he speaks with a smile in his voice”. Others have said: “he is a warm, considerate, easy-going person who is wonderful company. He’s an entertainer, a great chef, a confidante and a good sport, which make him a well-rounded individual. ”His very broad general knowledge makes him an interesting conversationalist, and he is never “lost for words”! Mick hasn’t always had it easy – many years ago, he was badly injured by a truck and spent a long time in hospital. Far from becoming angry or sorry for himself he reached out to others who were in need of a helping hand, and sought to give them assistance with their own rehabilitation, teaching them how to help their body heal itself. Mick loves to travel, and has played in ITF tourneys overseas. He also has an interest in plants and the environment, running a small nursery from his property in Millbank in the state’s far north. RC 7 Membership Drive TSA Player of the Year Doug Corbett This has been a real success story for Tennis Seniors NSW. We have been conscientiously trying to attract new members since early last year which has netted around 400 new members from all around the state. Some of our country members have taken it on themselves to sign up club members, from Ballina, Kiama, Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Ulladulla, as well as from Eglinton and Tooraweena out west. February 2014 “Dave Matthews” Seniors’ Tournament Report Nelson Bay, December 6-8, 2013 Nelson Bay turned on its finest weather for the staging of the “Dave Matthews” Seniors’ Tennis Tournament between Friday 6 and Sunday 8 December 2013. With dreadful weather conditions leading up to the weekend, Tournament Director Greg Scott feared the worst. However, after some gusty winds on Friday, everything improved to almost perfect conditions for the remainder of the tournament. Over 180 players took part in the weekend of tennis and as usual, some outstanding feats of human endurance were observed. Many of them were on the dance floor at the social on the Saturday night. The main event, the “Dave Matthews” Trophy was contested by two divisions of 5 pairs in each of the Men’s Combined Age 70+ Doubles, with the winners of each division playing off for the trophy. Some great tennis resulted and coming out on top were Craig Edwards (Dural) and Glenn Armstrong (Dubbo) over local Port Stephens players Rod Stubbs and Barry Dunlop. NSW had 3 winning teams, the 50 Men’s, the 75 Men’s and the 70 Women’s. Our high number of teams (22) hampered our chances somewhat, but from all reports it was a great week. Where else do we get to play at tennis clubs with water views? It was with great pleasure that I accepted the inaugural “Player Recognition Award” at the Presentation Dinner on Friday January 17. Apparently it was deserved for “coming back” after adversity, Chemo, broken foot, BMT (bone marrow transplant), Shingles, Chicken pox and Encephalitis. Thanks to those who helped me with their loving care and inspiring messages , cards and emails along the way….especially Arthur – and a huge thanks to Mick Bruton for nominating me. Arthur and I took the TSA “Player of the Year” trophy and presented it to Doug Corbett (with great pleasure), and enjoyed his hospitality for lunch into the bargain! – is this what they call “fringe benefits”?? Some news from the Presidents’ and Secretaries’ meeting in Hobart…..The Teams’ Carnival and Championships will definitely be held in Canberra in 2015, but 2016 is in “limbo” as Victoria is struggling to find available tennis centres. Victoria is however able to host the BI Oceania Championships from 7-10 March and the “Tennis Festival” on the 22 grass courts in Yarrawonga in November 2014. Also that the teams will be reverting to 5-year age brackets. Best wishes to all our new members – I hope we enable you to have a new dimension in your tennis life! Welcome! I hope you can enjoy it as long as I have – since representing NSW in 1991. 9 A NEW BOOK NOT TO BE MISSED This book is a thorough and informative history written of one of Australia’s most successful, significant and largest sporting organisations. ULLADULLA ATTRACTS OVERSEAS VISITORS O ne Hundred and Ninety four players took part in the Annual Seniors Tournament at Ulladulla in perfect weather conditions. Players travelled from Queensland, Canberra, Sydney and many regional NSW centres. Adding an international flavour were players from San Diego and San Francisco in the U.S, who maintained they would tell their friends to visit Australia in February and play in the Ulladulla tournament, so impressed were they with the area and the friendliness of the people. On Saturday night, ninety two players and supporters attended the BBQ at the club, beautifully catered for by the local ladies. On the menu were fish (caught, cleaned and cooked by Bob Crook), rissoles and sausages along with a variety of salads. Cheesecake topped off the meal and along with the homemade cakes and lunches supplied in the canteen all weekend and the bacon and egg rolls for breakfast, this club prides itself on being the best canteen in NSW. The tennis was of a high quality with players ranging in age from 35 to 83 and this certainly makes the job of the convenor a very challenging one. But overall, competitive tennis was played in all divisions. The spirit of Tennis Seniors was to the fore with competition on the court and friendships being made off the court. The club is very appreciative of the support of major sponsor BIG 4 Bungalow Park, Burrill Lake, not only for the financial benefit to the club but also the fabulous accommodation deal they give to the players, many of whom took advantage of this and were very complimentary of the facilities provided. BIG 4 also donate the major prize for the raffle, being a week’s accommodation for 6 people in one of their cabins. Brian Skippen was the winner of this prize and now he finds himself with 16 new best friends willing to share his winnings. Val Crook, Tournament Director Understanding the chemicals in your body W hy is it when you play tennis you feel happy? Is it the sunshine or the good company? Partly both. Because sunshine gives you that vital dose of vitamin D and by nature we are social beasts and we welcome the approval we get when we hit a good shot. We need to go much deeper than that to understand the basic physiology and how to take advantage of what happens when we undertake physical activities and when our body reacts to our emotions. You have all heard John McEnroe yell "You've got to be kidding!" to an umpire or Lleyton Hewitt yell "Come on!" after he has played a good point. Essentially there is no difference what the two players are doing, except that John McEnroe is making it a negative event and Lleyton Hewitt is making it a positive event. They both release a chemical into their bodies that enable them to play better. We look down on McEnroe because it is against our social mores to berate our opponents or umpire or to throw one's racket. However we tolerate Lleyton Hewitt because it appears to be against himself. Of course it is a bit in your face to have someone remind you forcefully that they have just hit a good shot. So Lleyton is not quite as innocent as he seems. So why do they do it? And what's the magical substance they get from their body that enables them to play better? It’s the same chemical you release when being chased by an angry bear or when you stress over being a chubby person. The first chemical to look at is endorphins. Just being fit and playing tennis releases endorphins into your blood straight and they make you feel happy, but they don't give you the edge in a match. Endorphins are defined as hormone-like substances that are produced in the brain and function as the body’s natural painkillers. Of the approximately 40 million brain cells, most are influenced either directly or indirectly by serotonin. This hormone is mostly created in your gut and imbalances can occur when you are under stress. Hey we play tennis to reduce the stress from other activities and so it's immediately beneficial. Serotonin is mainly produced from proteins which we can almost consider as brain food. In terms of our body functions, serotonin can also affect the functioning of our cardiovascular system and muscles. Our digestive system normally has what we would call "good" bacteria and "bad" bacteria. Maintaining the correct balance between the "good" bacteria and the "bad" bacteria is necessary for optimal health and that includes the creation of serotonin. So the message is if you have to take a large dose of anti-biotics which kill off your gut bacteria, and hence reduce your ability to create serotonin, make sure you have a dose of a pro-biotic such as Yacult (which has 6.5 billion CFUs of bacteria). Next time I’ll look at why it is that you can play lots of tennis and still have a spare tyre.
