It would be nice to speak of the lazy days of summer but as I write this, we are expecting a 73 degree high in July. Summer brings about relaxation, a break from routine for most, and vacation time. As summer turns to fall, it also brings about a return to all our responsibilities. As dentists we have many duties to our patients, families, and our profession. I also consider it one of my obligations to give care to those who cannot receive it due to medical and financial reasons. care each year. Though we have many contributing their services, we still need financial assistance to support these wonderful volunteers. You may have received a tax-deductible $100 ticket in the mail. I urge you to mail it in. If you could, would you consider purchasing one or more additional tickets. This can be done through our website at www.idfdhonline.org, or you can contact me or Mr. Steve Jambor, IFDH Vice President at 773263-9962 or via email at [email protected] . Entries must be received by September 13, after the conclusion of the ISDS annual meeting. Drawing will be held after the IFDH board meeting September 14, 2009. You can also visit our website at by Dr. Betty Haberkamp www.ifdhonline.org . Summer and Fall bring the return of the IFDH Raffle: Giving Back Smiles! including a Grand Prize of $2500. Economic times are tough now and even tougher for the elderly and disabled Illinois residents. The Illinois Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped (IFDH) is one of the charitable arms of both ISDS and IAGD. I would like to thank the 825 dentists and 202 labs Thank you for your support and for all the charitable that already volunteer. The DDS program helps works and acts performed by our Illinois dentists. hundreds of vulnerable people get over $1 million in Betty Here’s the scenario: It’s Saturday afternoon. The last patient of the day is in the chair. It’s a big case so I scheduled it late in the day so nobody would interrupt the procedure. Thirty minutes into the appointment a nice looking guy walks into the office. He is in pain. He holds his hand close to his left cheek. He states that his 70 year old dentist in Lake Zurich is unavailable. A week ago, a filling fell out and the dentist did something, but the pain has gotten worse over time. prescriptions that he gets. My face turned red. I looked at the man and told him that I truly do not know what to tell him but that I think I was getting screwed! While I said that to him, he was writing a check saying, “I would NEVER do that!” President Elect’s Report Caveat Doctor by Dr. Marta Speakman Coincidentally, the check he wrote was drawn on my bank! So before I cashed it, I told the teller what my suspicions were. When she opened the man’s account her eyes bulged out! He had over $10,000.00 in bounced checks. She was surprised that nobody What we did: Everyone knows the routine. He filled had caught it. “This account should have been out the papers. We scanned his ID. No insurance, closed a long time ago,” she said. he would pay by check. He was waiting in the reception room for two hours before I could get him And after that: On the next day, I visited my local into the operatory. Indeed, somebody before me had Walgreen’s Pharmacy. The pharmacist there performed a pulpotomy. The temporary had fallen confirmed what the one at Wal-Mart had said. She out and just a cotton pellet was left. So we took care not only echoed the information but gave me ten of him as best we could. At the front desk, on the pages of his records dating from late last year. She way out, he asks, “Am I supposed to be without also gave me the address of a web site which I could pain after what you did?” “Yes,” I said, “however, if have used to check on his record. The site was you are still in pain, here is my cell number. Call me organized last January by the Illinois Department of with the number of your pharmacy.” Human Services. What happened next: “It’s the week end so I would hate to bother you. I would like to have something right away—just in case,” he said. So I went on the internet and got the phone number of the pharmacy of his choice. Lessons learned: This patient has taught me so much. He looked nice and was very believable. He was not pushy. That worked and probably still works to his advantage. I have learned from a couple of dentists who were on the Walgreen list that he would alter a prescription: He would change #16 to 46 or It was the Wal-Mart in Vernon Hills. When I from 0 refills he would change it to 10. I’m still tracking reached the pharmacist she told me that she will him and it’s hard to believe what I have learned about NEVER fill a prescription for that person because he what goes on outside the confines of our offices.
