A Southeast summer like no other
Forget about “down the ocean.” Summer is the perfect time to take advantage of Baltimore City.
From take-out crabs to cold Natty Bohs to the Patterson Park pool, the sights, sounds, tastes and
smells of a southeast Baltimore summer live in the memory for a lifetime.

A Feast” by local artist Jackie Miller

The best part of summer in the Southeast?
Free activities—concerts, movies, festivals and more—abound. There’s always something
to do, whether it’s catching Jah Works in Patterson Park or a screening of “Cinema Paradiso”
in Little Italy.
Drop by a farmers market to grab some breakfast, take a seat, and people-watch.
Don’t forget the festivals—southeast Baltimore is the land of festivals. Immerse yourself in the
customs of another country while enjoying some of the best homemade food money can buy
at ethnic events like the Ukrainian Festival and the Feast of St. Gabriele Festival.
Other festivals, such as Highlandtown’s annual Art Cart Derby or the Fell’s Point Fun Festival,
showcase the city’s most colorful neighborhoods.
History is big here, too, especially this year, as we celebrate the 200-year anniversary of the Battle
of Baltimore, some of which happened right in Patterson Park!
This Summer Fun guide is meant to be a starting point for your summer and early fall activities.
Look further, poke around, and who knows what hidden gems will turn up.

Red Line panel

SERVING EAST BALTIMORE SINCE 1927
[email protected]
When public comment was curtailed
and an agenda item on Boston St.
construction was not reached, Canton
residents left more than fuming from a
Red Line Citizens’ Advisory Council
meeting.
Residents near the stretch of Boston St.
between Montford Ave. and Hudson St.-where the Red Line train would transition
to the surface as it heads east—have long
opposed that aspect of the project.
The last time Red Line plans were
presented to the Canton community, at a
January public forum, Maryland Transit
Administration engineers gave two traffic
re-routing options for the prolonged
construction of the Boston St. tunnel
transition. Both were soundly rejected by
the residents and Boston St.-area
businesses that attended that meeting.
One option was to close a stretch of Students of John Ruhrah Elementary and Middle School were excited about their new playground, even during summer
vacation. They are, from left: Jennifer Jara-Siza, Brian Perez, Jim Jara-Siza, Monica Lemus-Rodriguez, Dariana Lopez, Alex

Principals step outside the office, build playground in Greektown
BY ERIK ZYGMONT
[email protected]
“I think it’s nice,” said student Monica Lemus-Rodriguez of
John Ruhrah Elementary and Middle School’s new playground.
“We don’t have to grow up too fast. We’ve still got a little kid
inside of us.”
The playground was actually built last Wednesday, July 10, by
principals from across the country. The National Association of
Elementary School Principals chose Baltimore as the location for
its annual conference, and the association chose John Ruhrah
School, located in Greektown at Fait Ave. and Rappolla St., as the
beneficiary of its annual Community Service Day.
Mary Donnelly, principal of John Ruhrah, said that her school
had applied to receive the new playground. The old playground,
with missing pieces and safety issues, was dismantled in midMay, she said.
“Parents were raising money to put in a new playground, but we
weren’t anywhere near where we needed to be,” she said.

Bicentennial
of the War of 1812
Major events planned for the 200-year anniversary
of the Battle of Baltimore”
Historically speaking, 2014 is a huge year for Baltimore. It is the
culmination of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812, and Sept. 12-15
is the two-hundredth anniversary of the Battle of Baltimore. Two
hundred years ago, the British approached Baltimore by land and sea
with the intent of sacking the city and ending the War of 1812 with an
English victory.
Neither happened. The British land forces were delayed--and their
leader killed--by local and state militia forces on Sept. 12, 2014, in the
Battle of North Point, in today’s Dundalk. When the British made it to
Baltimore proper two days later, they saw a force of 10,000 waiting for
them in a defensive line that ran through today’s Patterson Park.
No thanks, they said, turning around.
In the meantime, British naval forces had been bombarding Fort
McHenry since Sept. 13. They gave up and left the following day, out
of ammunition.
This September, the focus will be on the War of 1812, and the Battle
of Baltimore.
September 6-7, Defenders Day celebration: Two full days of
activities--including music and drill demos, military camps, children’s
games, 1812-era music and more--culminate in a reenactment of the
Battle of North Point. Two reenactments will be held on Saturday; the
big one is Sunday at 4:15 p.m. Info: dundalkhistory.org.
September 14, The Hampstead Hill Festival in Patterson Park:
Come to Patterson Park and join Gov. Martin O’Malley to celebrate
the bicentennial of America’s victory in the War of 1812. The full day
of activities includes live music, a performance of “1812: The Rock
Opera,” a living history village, blacksmithing, historical re-enactors,
cannon firing, an 1814-1914-2014 fashion show and much more. The
Hampstead Hill Festival, presented by the Friends of Patterson Park
and the Creative Alliance, is 8 a.m.-8:30 p.m. in Patterson Park. Free to
the public. Info: creativealliance.org/1814.
September 10-16, Star-Spangled Spectacular: So much is
happening over these seven days, starting with the arrival of the
Tall Ships on Wednesday, Sept. 10. The week includes ship tours, air
shows, marches, festivals, concerts, fireworks and more. Events take
place in Baltimore City near the harbor and at Ft. McHenry. Info:
