One of the highlights of the year will undoubtedly be
Edward II’s triumphant return to the dmh stage. After
leaving fans on a high with a packed farewell gig in 1999, the band have reformed
for a special tour this year. They’re back at dmh almost 10 years to the day for the
final of the reunion gigs. We’re looking forward to another amazing evening, make
sure you’re here to be part of it.
Richard Haswell
Looking a bit further ahead, we know we are going to have a great Christmas
this year with the musical Scrooge and we are specially excited about having the
legendary Tommy Steele taking to the stage in the starring role. If you’re short of
ideas on finding the perfect Christmas present, tickets to Scrooge are bound to go
down well. Or you could opt for dmh gift vouchers for a present that’s a little bit
different. Turn to page 50 for more details.
Fans of musicals have plenty to enjoy with the classic Blood Brothers in November
and Rocky Horror Show in February. Other music highlights include Mercury Prizenominated folk band The Unthanks, as well as Courtney Pine, The Legendary Gypsy
Queens and Kings, Ojos De Brujo, Heather Small and Bill Wyman.
We’ve not forgotten to have a laugh either, with a return visit from Al Murray whose
show sold out last time, the team from BBC Radio 4’s I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue
and Ed Byrne. Add to that an exhilarating season of concerts from the world-class
Philharmonia Orchestra, children’s shows with Noddy In Toyland, Bob The Builder
Live! and The Chuckle Brothers in a Christmas Chuckle and dancing sensation
Tango Fire and we have only just begun to scratch the surface of our programme.
So, why not treat yourself – or a loved one – to a night of great entertainment here
at dmh. We look forward to seeing you.

The Philharmonia’s 2009/10 season gets underway in style with
Schumann’s deeply elegant Piano Concerto. Although not outwardly
showy, the work is renowned for its exquisite dialogue between the
soloist and orchestra and is often thought to have been a source
of inspiration for the concertos of Brahms and Grieg. To end is
Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, in which the bleak Fate motif is swept
away by the finale’s uplifting portrait of a Russian folk festival.

Direct from Buenos Aires comes Argentina’s hottest dance show Tango
Fire. A sell-out hit in the UK and a world-wide phenomenon, this sizzling
show features 10 sensational dancers accompanied by Quatrotango, a
quartet of brilliant musicians and a singer. This is tango at its fiery best.
Tango Fire is an irresistible journey through the history of this most
seductive of dance forms. Period duets evoke the glitter and danger
of the barrios where the dance was born, and the heady nostalgia of
the early dance halls where it was popularised, while the group’s
modern choreography is edged with the sharpness and style of
contemporary Argentina.
As one of the most popular dance forms world-wide, this show
combines the rawness and sophistication, sexy yet sensual side of
tango, in a true dance spectacular.

Elvis On Tour - The Legend

successful Elvis impersonator,

Weakest Link, both on BBC One. With
his outstanding band and singers,

Mercury nominated Geordie band formerly known as Rachel Unthank &
The Winterset. Having established themselves as the most innovative
and critically acclaimed English folk band in modern history The
Unthanks are ready to risk it all with another audacious step sideways.
While the abbreviated name reflects the reality that the band is
co-fronted by Rachel Unthank’s sister Becky Unthank, the real
development sees an extended line-up that includes string quartet, brass,
percussion, tuned percussion, bass, and The Unthanks’ producer Adrian

The main work in the opening concert
of the Bardi’s new season is Carl Orff’s
spectacular Cantata on medieval love,
fortune and fate, Carmina Burana.
Known for their timeless, unsentimental and quietly subversive tales,
new album Here’s The Tender Coming is a calmer, melancholic, warmer
colour of sad than the intense bleakness of its predecessor; The Bairns.
Forging links between folk worlds old, new and other, The Unthanks are
the inheritors, curators and distorters of Tyneside’s traditions. Don’t
miss the next chapter.
Music Director Claus Efland opens
the concert with Tchaikovsky’s
passionate ‘Romeo & Juliet’ Fantasy

The Legendary Gypsy Queens and Kings is an extraordinary celebration
of songs with some of Europe’s finest Gypsy singers. During the show,
20 Roma musicians and dancers cast a spell over their audiences, with
the great voices of their people and virtuoso instrumentals.

Dvorák Symphony No. 9, ‘From the

“Everyone was talking about Queens and Kings - the Barbican was in
party mode within the first few minutes and everybody knew it was
going to be a legendary night to remember.” Songlines
Although Glazunov was a
contemporary of Shostakovich and
Prokofiev, his work is reminiscent
of that of his more Romantic
compatriot Tchaikovsky. His
Violin Concerto contrasts Slavic
melancholy and cheery fanfares
while showcasing the soloist’s
technical brilliance. Dvorák’s Ninth
Symphony was composed to
celebrate Columbus’s discovery of
the ‘New World’ with American tunes
and rhythms, yet the composer’s
nostalgia for Czechoslovakia also
shines through.

In November 1999 Edward II played a farewell performance in a packed
De Montfort Hall. Afterwards, hundreds of people wound their way in to
the night, intoxicated from an astonishing show, but with the sadness
that comes from the end of an era.
Now, 10 years to the day (well almost), they’re back. Demand for the
legendary folk roots acts has been so huge that they have reformed for
selected dates throughout 2009 - again culminating in a final date here
in Leicester.
And what a party it’s going to be. Orignally called ‘Edward II and the Red
Hot Polkas’ their unique splicing of old England dance tunes with sunny
sexy grooves transcends superficial notions of ‘crossover’, forging a
truly original synthesis from their far-flung musical roots.
Support comes from the equally legendary Dhol Foundation and DJ
Pete Lawrence who kept 99’s crowd dancing in to the small hours.
Now he’s back too - Ten Years On.

Traditional in format, Mozart’s Third
Violin Concerto follows the convention
of the orchestra playing accompanist
to the solo violin. Although clearly
influenced by his travels through
Italy, the finale contains the lively
Hungarian folk-tune known as the
‘Strasbourger’. Mahler’s later works
were often associated with the idea of
farewell, an idea that was intensified
after the posthumous première of his
Ninth Symphony. The chaotic waltzes

die out to make way for a beautiful
final adagio.

Swan Lake is the greatest romantic ballet of all,

hauntingly beautiful music creates a truly

The OFFSITE Platform Prize IN:LANDS - Wayne Mitchelson
De Montfort Hall 21st August – 4th October
The City Gallery OFFSITE is proud to present the
OFFSITE Platform Prize. The ‘prize’, a six week
exhibition as part of the OFFSITE programme, is
awarded to one of the outstanding graduates
from De Montfort University’s Fine Art Degree,
Wayne Mitchelson.
Inspired by 19th century German Romantic painting,
the writings of Franz Kafka and a love of cinema;
Mitchelson creates what he refers to as “one frame
cinema”. Combining aesthetics and compositional
devises; of time of day, mood and use of light, from
his painting influences along with the many potential
story lines of Kafka’s writing he layers photographs
together creating a new and original scene. These
sourced images and ones taken by himself are merged
together creating an image similar to a movie still, a
scene frozen mid shot and left for the viewer to then
create a story.
