President’s Message:
“Points to Ponder”
Benjamin Franklin wrote a story called The Whistle in which he relates a moral lesson he
learned when he was but a wee lad. He coveted a tin whistle that belonged to another
boy; the boy sold it to him, and it brought young Ben much delight until his siblings
chided him because he had paid four times what the cheap tin whistle was worth. He was
so distraught, and upset with what other things he could have obtained with the money he
had squandered, that the whistle brought him no further joy. Thereafter, he would use the
phrase “he paid too much for his whistle” to describe any endeavor where too much
money or effort was expended for the benefit obtained.
How do we apply this to the military vehicle hobby? My own story is that for many
years, my WWII jeep windshield rifle bracket has sported a rubber M1 Garand replica
that I bought from an outfit in Mississippi. The rifle looked rough (like it had been
dropped on the beach from the movie it was used in); and it was permanently deformed in
a slight upward U-shape, which I guess was a result of improper cooling after it was
molded. In my treasures from previous rallies, I had an M1 wooden stock and the front
section of a demilitarized M1 rifle, and so I decided I would build up a new dummy
Garand to display in the jeep. I obtained all the needed metal parts; I bought a dummy
receiver from a parade rifle company, and worked out the details of how to assemble
these various parts into a much better replica. I particularly sweated over the rear sight
assembly, trying to strike a balance between reasonable authenticity and out-of- pocket
expenses. At last, I was satisfied with the result and I mounted my new replica Garand in
the bracket under the windshield. It fit perfectly. And you know what? The details I
sweated over aren’t even visible when that nice straight rifle is mounted in the bracket! I
hadn’t realized that the warped shape of the old rubber rifle allowed seeing details that
you can’t see otherwise.
So, I thought about Ben Franklin’s story-I concluded I spent way too much effort on a
detail most people will never see. Was the effort wasted? That, my fellow MV lovers, is
a matter of opinion. You know when you have correctly detailed something, even if it
can’t be seen. Only you can judge whether it was worth the effort.
Sometimes that extra effort to be accurate gives us satisfaction. I built a radio filter box
for my Willys jeep; the plans call for lead washers to mount it. I made my own lead
washers. As they are painted, you can’t even tell they are lead. Fortunately the effort to
make them wasn’t significant, and I know they are lead, fabricated from materials athand just like they would have been if the box had been installed in the field during
WWII.
Sometimes that extra effort works to our disadvantage. Years ago, one of our club
members was rebuilding the transmission in his WWII Dodge Carryall, and had a choice
of two intermediate shafts, a thin and a thick one. He chose the earlier (thinner) model, as
it was “factory correct”. Much to his chagrin, the original intermediate shaft failed one
evening, which was the exact problem that had prompted the manufacturer to produce the
thicker replacement shaft that he could have used in the first place.
So what is the point? Before you put in that extra effort to be accurate, make sure YOUR
satisfaction is worth the effort!

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by President Johnson at 1100 hrs.

Welcome by President Johnson: President Johnson welcomed the members present. He
expressed appreciation from the club to the members who are displaying vehicles today.
Secretary’s Report: Secretary Watt reported on the membership numbers. There are 71
Regular members, 9 Life members and 1 honorary member. He is unsure about the
Honorary member Guy Whidden of Frederick Md. If anyone knows his status please
report back to W W.
Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Mengele reviewed the latest financial report. The club
has over $52,000.00. We usually keep around $45,000.00. The expenses for the 2015
Rally are paid. Rally profit for 2015 is $7061.00. The profit is due mainly to the Ripken
stadium price drop. Today’s meeting will cost the club around $1000.00. Therefore, he
suggested that the club donate $6000.00 to various organizations per the donation criteria.
Event Coordinator’s Report: Coordinator Ketchum reviewed the latest version of the
events calendar. Any members who are not receiving the calendar via email should
contact Tim at [email protected] . Also, any member who wants an event
added to the calendar should contact him. Any member who wants a schedule mailed
should contact Tim.
Nov 7& 8 – Veteran’s Day parades in Manassas and Brunswick were discussed. Also, the
Tank Farm open house on October 3 & 4 in Nokesville Va.

Words from President Johnson: The future of the club is a pressing issue. Poor
attendance at the Rally is not a healthy trend. None of us are getting any younger. We
need to get young people interested in this hobby. Getting young people involved will be
a challenge. Reaching these young people will require new techniques. The internet will
be the primary tool used to recruit them. Social media and other new ideas will be the
key. The old way of doing things will not be effective anymore. Newer model surplus
vehicles and modified military vehicles will increase in numbers. The club has to adapt to
these new vehicles and this way of thinking. Reaching other groups like re-enactors is
encouraged. MV displays at motorcycle events such as Rolling Thunder may be effective.
If you know of an event, ask the organizers if they are interested in having a display. Air
shows are a good example. Any large scale exposure where young people are would be
helpful. Be creative as you think about ways of doing this.
Member Dean Hansen spoke about the judging at last year’s Rally which included
categories adapted to modified vehicles. The judging process is trying to be all inclusive.
He also spoke about the current MVPA Bankhead Convoy recreation. He participated in
a leg of the convoy. He spoke about the accommodations available on an MVPA
sponsored convoy. Perks like free U-Haul vehicles and trailers for the return trip. There
are sponsored meals at practically every stop, police escorts, lodging, and parade like
atmospheres at many towns along the route. Chase vehicles with trailers, repair parts
storage and tools. Breakdowns are a matter of interest to many and repairs are usually a
group effort. The cost to participate is $150.00 per segment. Dean challenged MV owners
to get involved. The convoys are best suited for people with that much time to spend. In
two years the Chicago to LA convoy happens. In four years, the DC to San Francisco
route is recreated. Member Lanny Moore is currently on the Bankhead convoy in his Jeep
station wagon. Lanny has completed every MVPA convoy. Again, Dean urges members
to consider getting involved.
New Business:
 Donation Committee Chairman: Clive Rowley spoke to the members present
about possible organizations to make club donations to this year. He suggested
that the club make the John Brown our pet project. He passed around a brochure
from the Hagerstown Aviation Museum. He also mentioned the Ft. Meade
Historical Museum, the Americans in Wartime Museum and the USS Olympia
Seaport Museum in Philadelphia (Admiral Downey’s Flagship).
The current criteria for donations are: MV Related, in our region and must be a
501 3C Non Profit organization.
He also asked the members present to consider expanding the region to the
Mississippi River. The club members present must decide who to donate to and
how much to give.
Bob Buker suggested the Eisenhower Farm / Friends of the Park and the New
Oxford Historical Society.
President Johnson thanked Chairman Rowley for his work on this issue. President
Johnson suggested the following donations be given:
$2000.00 to the USS John Brown and $1000.00 to these organizations: Fort
Meade Historical Museum, Hagerstown Aviation Museum, Americans in
Wartime Museum and the USS Olympia Seaport Museum. A motion was made
and seconded to make those donations. Motion approved.


Fred Lutes introduced several potential new members present and two WWII
veterans visiting the meeting. The membership present gave them a warm
welcome.
Joe Galletti spoke about the recent car show at the JBAB Air Force base. He
attended and suggested that the club produce an informational business card or
brochure to be handed out at events. This is an easy way to spread the news about





our hobby. President Johnson instructed Secretary Watt to investigate this
possibility.
Bob Buker spoke about scheduling a convoy during Father’s Day weekend in
2016. It would be at the Green Ridge state park in western Maryland. Open to all
vehicles. Primitive camping available.
Tim Clark is going to check into another convoy possibility at the National
Guard’s Baker Training Camp.
Doug Lutes told the members that he has entered the club on Facebook. We have
480 “likes”. He suggested that the club “like” related vendor pages to strengthen
the bond of the MV hobby.
Anja Taylor spoke of a need to have a more user friendly club website that
would not require “programming” access to make simple changes. She is
investigating.
Denis Mengele spoke about the upcoming John Brown cruise on October 3rd.
There are no more free cruises for veterans because of expenses. Each person
must buy a ticket. Denis may be able to get discount tickets for club members.
Members are invited to park their MV’s at the dock. Those that do will earn two
cruise tickets.
Old Business: None.
Next Meeting Location and Date: The next regular club meeting will be held in
January. Possible locations are the marine Corp Museum in Baltimore, the NRA Museum
in Fairfax or the USS John Brown. Members will be notified beforehand.
Door Prizes: Door prize tickets were drawn and 19 prizes were awarded. Tools and
military related books were among the prizes given out.
Adjourn Having no further business to conduct, President Johnson adjourned the
meeting at 1205 hours.
The members present enjoyed a catered lunch. Militaria sales were active in the big
garage. A good time was had by all.

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by President Johnson at 1102 hrs.

Welcome by President Johnson: President Johnson welcomed the members present.
He mentioned that the memorial service for former member Tony Norton was today.
Tony was only 69 years old. Scott shared some details of Tony’s club involvement over
the years to include Tony’s huge CRT monitor he used as a judging chairman and Rally
data hub many years ago. Tony will be missed. This is also a wake-up call for all
members to cherish the time we have and spend it wisely.
Scott’s “Safety Share” for this meeting began with three items, (a lug nut, a large rivet
and a short piece of leaf spring) and the question “What do these three things have in
common”? The answer is that they were all found on the side of the road. The lesson
today is to be watchful and wary regarding where you drive. Tire hazards are everywhere
you look.
He also expressed appreciation from the club to Don Rollette Sr for setting up the
meeting location.
Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Mengele reviewed the clubs financial status. The club
has assets of $63,000.00. There are no current expenses to be paid but there will be
shortly. He had some of the 2015 Rally shirts available for $5.00 each. Mostly XXL and
up.
Secretary’s Report: Secretary Watt reported that we have a new member Dave Antram
from Somerset PA. Dave owns a 1952 M37. New members Thomas Harrington and Eric
Neilson who both joined at the September 2015 meeting. There are 91 members on the
roster. As of April 1 2016, there are 46 Regular members who have paid, 7 Life
members,1 honorary member and 37 members who have not paid for 2016. (See
membership info at the end of the Newsletter – Ed.) The names of the members who have
not paid will be removed from the roster by mid-April. The 37 non-paying members were
sent a special reminder email on April 1st. Six email addresses came back as
undeliverable.
The club roster now has a column to indicate MVPA membership. We would like to
report our involvement to the MVPA to help maintain our Affiliate status.
Warren reported that he has not made any progress on the club “brochure”. He will work
to have a sample presented at the September meeting.
Event Coordinator’s Report: Coordinator Tim Ketchum was not able to attend the
meeting due to travel. Copies of the latest events calendar were available at the meeting.
Any members who are not receiving the calendar via email should contact Tim at
[email protected] . Also, any member who wants an event added to the
calendar should contact him.
Newsletter Editor’s Report: Editor Bob Taylor reported that the next edition will be
posted on the website before the 2016 Rally. There are only a few persons who still want
hardcopies mailed to them. It makes for a bit of extra work to do small quantities. This
may need to be revisited in the future.
The 2016 East Coast Rally:
Registrar Anja reported that there are 612 spaces for rent. So far only 50% of these are
sold. She has been calling vendors who attended previously to try and get them back.
Bob T. - If we reduce the cost of the spaces he did not think it would make much
difference.
Tom B. – He attends the MTA and Red Ball shows and the cost to rent a space is just
about the same. Plus the MTA shows charge a $5.00 admission! The car hobby is going
through a downward cycle. Other clubs and hobbies are feeling the same affects.
Tom is going to pay Ripken $3500.00 towards the lease and confirm the event insurance.
The Ripken management has reiterated that the lease starts on Tuesday. No one is
allowed on the property until then. The club has rented the parking lot at Ripken for
eleven years. Set up for the Rally begins on May 10 2016 at 0900 hours (soft). The club
will provide lunch to all volunteers who participate. Five golf carts are rented. One will
be the Chief Judge’s. Friday evening will feature an Italian dinner for the members and a
guest. Tom thanked Scott for getting this year’s dash plaques made up in memory of
Peter Lee. He recalled his last time recently spent with Peter at a recent event.
Anja – has contacted a local scout troop. They have agreed to help set up the Rally.
Fred – The lack of vendors is not good news and is alarming. The club needs to do
something different. He spoke of all the good times at previous Rallys and hopes they can
continue for many years.
Scott – The same problem can be found at events held at the Carlisle fairgrounds. Shows
that used to take days to see it all have dwindled in size.
Bob A. – We need to ask the question, “Are all the surplus parts becoming scarce?” It
seems like that is the case. Many vendors do not even sell MV parts.
Anja – Larger vendors who used to buy large blocks of spaces are not coming back for a
variety of reasons.
Clive – Can the club spend some money on advertising? Possibly on the radio? A motion
was made and carried to spend $1000.00 on local radio advertising.
Tom – We need more signage. A motion to have 50 more made up was made and carried.
He is going to have some more made. We also need to make our signs with brighter,
more noticeable colors.
Dean – Has posted our event on sites that can be found by searching “Car shows in MD”.
Tom – Be creative when placing flyers. Gun shows are great but so are local restaurants.
Bob T. – George Rich has a series of 2-way radios that he is lending us for the Rally.
Warren – Can we consider a nice give-away prize or prizes for the vendors?
Scott – Despite all of these points of discussion, there is always great value in being able
to physically touch these items that are sold at the Rally. You do not have the same
opportunity when purchasing items on the internet.
Bob A. – Can we consider downsizing the Rally?
Scott – That might put us back onto a grass site. That means a greater amount of work
will need to be done. The club does not have enough active members for that.
Dean – We need to target younger MV owners.
Tom B. The US Govt is auctioning off 100’s of Humvees. There are some of the new
owners that need to be pursued.
A discussion about private HMMV ownership and licensing was held.
Fred – Can we obtain lists of vendors from other clubs so we can call them?
Anja – We can but there is the issue of manpower to make the calls.
Fred – Can we contact the VMMV and ask them to advertise for us?
Tom B.- This has been attempted before with negative results.
Anja – If needed, vendors can pay her at the Rally.
Bob T. – No one wants to see the Rally get smaller but it previously was half the size it is
now. Our efforts to keep it like it is may or may not have a significant impact.
Scott – Actual vendor participation is usually about 80 to 90% that show up after buying
spaces. Some vendors only stay for part of the time. Anything you can do to help the
effort will be time well spent.
Bob A. – Beechwood Canvas told him that a trip to the Rally was too expensive.
Fred – Thanks to all who help out before, during and after the Rally.
Old Business:
Anja – has contacted our old webmaster Crafix. They have done some updating to our
website to make it look like the club still exists. They are being paid $60.00 per hour.
They are also attempting to get the site to a place that she can take over to make updates.
Warren – what is the status of the club dissolution language discussed at the September
meeting?
Scott – will work on incorporating “club dissolution” language added to the by-laws to be
reviewed and possibly voted on at the September meeting.
New Business:
Don R. - spoke about an upcoming show the first weekend of October. It will be held at
the Timonium Fairgrounds. It will be a militaria show covering the years of 1860 to
1945. The coordinator of the show is looking for display vehicles. His name is Steve
Silva. Don can connect those interested with Steve.
Warren – Can we get a “Taps” section added to the website and newsletter? If so, we
need to have some pictures on file of as many members as possible.
Scott – That is a good idea.
Bob T. – We should definitely have the officers pictures on the website and thumbnails
for the newsletter.
Bob A. – Announced that Clive received a letter from the MVPA recognizing his 40
years of membership. Clive holds #298. (Applause).
Warren – Announced that member Lanny Moore has moved to Jacksonville FL.
Anja – Announced that the 2016 Florida Rally had a lot of vehicles and few vendors.
Bob T. – Announced that the Florida Rally is held on the grounds of an antique mall type
area so there is another reason for some people to attend.
Scott – Tony Ankrom is recovering from heart surgery.

We are looking for a site. It will serve as a Rally debrief meeting so it is important.
Clive will ask Frank Buck about allowing us to meet at his place in Gettysburg. Others

From the Editor:
My sincere apologies to those who have submitted input for the newsletter which has not
appeared in a timely manner. (I believe this is called a euphemism –Ed.)
Anyway – here it is.
A sort of an apology also to Lanny Moore who has been active in previous and upcoming
grand convoys across the Nation. He has provided a wealth of material which I am not
including here, as it would now delay our publication. Lanny may have illustrated
reports on these adventures available by Rally time. I am looking forward to them.
We have all endured the loss of some old and dear members in the recent months. I do
not know what might be said on these insignificant pages that could begin to measure
their contributions - now gone forever except in memory. It is well beyond my skill to
say.

Event Report from Tim Ketchum:
Manassas St Patrick’s Day Parade
12 March 2016
The club participated in this year’s Manassas St Patrick’s Day parade on 12 March 2016.
There were six jeeps and two 2 ½ ton trucks. The weather was perfect with lots of sun
and not too cold. The parade went down the middle of Old Town Manassas. The street
was lined with many people and lots of little kids wearing green. We blended right in
with our own shades of green. We had a wounded Afghanistan War veteran riding in
Ted Lawson’s M35A2. He lost a leg, but that was OK since he still had three more. He
was used to sniff out IEDs and after his injury he was allowed to be kept by his Army
handler. Participants were:

Events Reports from Rick Skipper:
The ALR presented the veteran riders and 3 World War II guests to the students and in return they
sang songs, read memorials and displayed flags. The ALR will distribute the cards to local veterans,
and send many to active duty service members around the world. The outpouring of patriotic support
for the veterans and their service was phenomenal.
This collaboration between the ALR and the schools is not only an honorarium for the vets but to
bring military service, dedication to country, and the understanding that freedom is not free to school
age children in a very tangible, and somewhat loud format.
In addition, this drive thru town is a warm up to the Veterans Day parade scheduled for tomorrow on
some of the same streets.
As a veteran this
was a great opportunity to meet other vets, share my service time with very interested kids who are
enthusiastically patriotic and did a great job chanting ?U.S.A.!!? It was also my privilege to have two,
US Air Force, Vietnam veterans ride in my Humvee. At the conclusion we returned to Post 10 for
lunch. A special thank you to the 2 County Motor officers who escorted and cleared traffic for our
contingent, they did good.

Patriotism is Waterproof
Unfortunately, the local weather prognosticators were right and rain was the order of the
day for the, 7th Annual Greater Manassas Veterans Day Parade. At just under 60 degrees,
a strong wind and the heaviest of the rain commencing with the start of the parade, it
made for a cool, wet event. The theme of this year’s parade was; “A special tribute to our
women veterans from a grateful nation”, as the byline of the 40-page program
exclaimed! Women veterans and active duty service members were on hand from all
branches, with a strong showing from the Coast Guard.
The Washington Area Chapter Blue and Grey Military Vehicle Trust (WAC B&G MVT)
mustered fifteen historic military vehicles (HMV), for the conveyance of veterans and
honored guests alike. The Grand Marshal, Brigadier General Wilma L. Vaught, USAF
(Ret), road in the lead jeep followed by almost every HMV carrying more veterans. By
type the club posted: four- duce and half heavy trucks; 1 each: M37, M1009 CUCV, and
M998 Humvee; and eight- Jeeps, one with trailer.
While waiting for the call to first gear, I spent a few moments speaking with one of the
World War Two veterans. His grandson has fetched him from Erie, PA, a 13-hour round
trip, just so he could participate today. He wore his vintage paratrooper smock with his
ribbons and badges proudly displayed. He completed jump school in 1943 at age 18, he
would later jump into Europe and fight thru to the end of the war. He is one of the last
two soldiers of his jump school class, to still be alive today. As I walked away, rain
pelting the brim of my desert hat, two thoughts came to mind: wow, he was 35 years
ahead of me at jump school, and, he is the epitome of why his lot is called the “Greatest
Generation”.
Drivers received a 10$ fuel stipend, a souvenir program and a Chick-Fil-A picnic box
lunch at the conclusion of the parade and parking at the Museum. Military vehicles have
never been known for their environmental comforts, and today was no exception.
Despite being more than soaked thru, spirits were high, conversation lively and the
brother hood of shared dedication to duty and country unmistakable. Today in the rain,
Americans, be they: veterans, active duty, or citizens on the curbside, demonstrated their
strength character in that, Patriotism is Waterproof.

2 April, Sat: Club meeting starts at 1100. The address is 1426 Fort Ave., Baltimore.
This is the location of Marine Corps League, Detachment 565. The building is an old,
converted fire engine house. In addition to on-street parking, there is a school parking
lot located across the street.
23 April, Sat: Wreaths Across America family friendly event and car show. 5pm to
10pm. If you want to display your MV at the Carshow contact Leisa Billington, Local
Coordinator, 240-216-6261, email [email protected]. Event will be held at the
new Dominion Raceway off of exit 118 (Thornburg) I-95 south of Fredericksburg.

1600. Reenactors and military vehicles of all eras welcome. Participants can set up on
Friday afternoon and stay overnight in their tents. Also can drive in on Saturday arriving

3-5 June, Fri-Sun: WW 2 Weekend, Reading, Pa. Airshow and ground displays, large

4 June, Sat: D-Day remembrance event, Old Town Alexandria, VA. WW2 vehicles, GI

4 June, Sat: Run Amuck 4 mile and Mini Run Amuck 2 mile Mud Run on Quantico
Marine Corps Base. Vehicles requested for display. Run starts at 0700 to 1300. Must
setup between 0600 and 0630. Expecting 3000 runners. Dummy or airsoft weapons are

18 June, Sat: Military vehicle display at the Udvar Hazy National Air and Space
Museum in conjunction with their Innovations of Flight Family Day. 100th anniversary
of Coast Guard aviation. Any CG/Navy vehicles most welcome. All era vehicles
welcome. Need to arrive before 0900. Trailer parking available. Lunch provided.

Now is the time to renew your membership in our organization and participate with us in
the restoration, ownership and preservation of historic military vehicles.
Annual membership dues are $20.00. Checks should be made out to WAC B&G MVT.

Secretary Watt will have your membership card available at any Club meeting. If you
send a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your dues, your card can be mailed.
Two important reminders:
1. Membership is for the calendar year , not for the 12 months following the payment of
your dues. If you are a new member, or an old member whose membership is not
current, dues paid late in the year may be applied to the following year’s membership.
2. While we encourage all members to join and participate with the MVPA, membership
in the MVPA is totally unrelated to your active membership in the WAC B&G MVT.
This may be obvious to most - but occasionally this issue has come up.
