Principal’s Message
Week 2 Term 2 2013
Dear Parents, Students and Staff
Welcome to Term 2. I hope you had an
enjoyable and relaxing holiday.
It was wonderful to see the positive
response by students to the various
ANZAC Day marches in the Bega Valley
Shire during the holidays. College Captain
Meg Reckord gave a wonderful ANZAC
Day remembrance speech at the
Pambula march, and College ViceCaptain Kate Smith addressed the march
in Merimbula. Wreaths were laid at
Pambula, Merimbula, Eden, Candelo and
Bega by Lumen Christi representatives. So
a big thanks to all who attended. Our
representation was the best for many
years, even though ANZAC Day fell during
the school holidays.

The College remembered those who had
represented Australia in the past, along
with those who are presently involved in
various conflicts around the world last
Thursday with a special ceremony. The
soldiers
and
their
families
were
remembered in our prayers and musician
Tom Burn played the last post. Staff
members Scott Lipsham, Jacinta Battista
and Eileen Reckord performed a song
which reflected the hardships of the First
World War in France. The students were
very respectful and reflective towards this
special remembrance ceremony.
Thank you to Martin McGee for all the
work that he put into organising our
students, staff and wreaths for each of the
ceremonies on ANZAC Day and our
ceremony here at the College.
I am pleased to see most students are
wearing their winter uniform as is College
policy from the beginning of Term 2. Some
items of clothing have not been available
from Coast Road Clothing during the
holidays and I have asked staff here at the
College to be mindful of this. I have been
working closely with Coast Road Clothing
and have been informed that all orders
should be filled by the end of Week Two.
The one exception is the College Blazer.
These were ordered in early February by Coast
Road Clothing with delivery from Fiji promised
within eight weeks. For many reasons the
supplier has not delivered. Please be patient
with staff at Coast Road Clothing as they are
doing all they can to get delivery of the
blazer.
Congratulations to Molly Campbell who, on
Saturday 27 April at the National Convention
Centre, won the National Final of the Lions'
Youth of the Year Quest. She was both the
overall winner and the public speaking winner.
Also congratulations to Stephen Thresher who
received Gold in the 50m fly and two silvers in
the 50m and 100m free at the Combined
Catholic Colleges Swimming Championships.
We wish him well when he represents
NSWCCC at the All Schools Swimming
Championships.
This week coincides with the official launch of
our enrolment period for prospective students
in 2013. Please contact Barb Gough on 6495
8813 for enrolment information, and let your
friends and neighbours know that applications
are now open for all classes from Kindergarten
to Year 12. Due to the overwhelming interest
in K-6 classes, the enrolment period for these
classes will finish at the end of Week 3 Term 3.
Class placements will then be offered in line
with the Catholic Education Office policy.
Open Day this year is Wednesday 22 May;
please invite your family, friends and
prospective parents to come and visit us
between 9.00am and 4.30 pm for a tour given
by our students and staff.
I would also like to take this opportunity to wish
all mothers a Happy Mother‘s Day this Sunday.
May you recognise God‘s blessings in your
daily lives.

Earn and Learn Program 2013
Last year our school participated in the Woolworths Earn & Learn program and we were able to get some great
equipment with the over 88,000 stickers that we collected. We were able to purchase maths and science
equipment, art and craft materials, sporting equipment, literacy resources for reading and writing, puzzles, Lego kits,
games and construction sets, music and aboriginal resources and more.
Judging by the excitement and the look
on our students faces (below) your donations of vouchers were very much appreciated!
From Monday 8 April to Sunday 9 June 2013 Lumen Christi will be collecting Woolworths Earn & Learn Points. You can
get one Woolworths Earn & Learn Point for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco and gift cards). Place the
Woolworths Earn & Learn Points onto a Woolworths Earn & Learn Points Sheet and when it‘s complete, the Points
Sheet can be dropped into the Collection Box here at the College or at your local store. At the end of the
promotion, we‘ll be able to get some great new equipment. The range is extensive and offers lots of items ideal for
our students. If you‘d like to know more visit woolworths.com.au/earnandlearn. Thank you for your support.
LCCC Cross Country carves up the grass!
Conforming to Lumen custom, the
Cross-Country
carnival
commenced with the ‗war-cry‘
competition. However, this year
defying tradition Baringa House
executed a mantra that surprised
the crowd by not finishing dead
last.
Bobberrer once again
proved victorious with the war cry,
supported by the antics of star
rapper House Captain, Anna
Cusack.
Mad Martin McGee,
again rallied his troops by
conforming to his usual maniacal
style. The course was a grueling
600 metre to 6 kilometre trek
through the untamed wilderness
of the Lumen surrounds.
Competitors battled mosquito and
leech infested scrub and
swampland, demonstrating
endurance and courage.
A
range of novelty activities
managed by teachers and senior
students entertained the littlies as
well as the young at heart. But
perhaps the main attraction was
the super slippery slide where
students braved the elements and
demonstrated their finesse while
DJ Fragnito set the pace. Energy
was at an all-time high for this

Lumen
Christi
held
a
commemorative assembly to honor
ANZAC day and to pay tribute to
our ‗diggers‘.
To begin,
acknowledgement was given to the
traditional indigenous custodians of
the land.
Next, Year 12 student Brittany Wallis
presented a moving recital of
renowned poem, ‗The Fallen‘ by
Laurence Binyon.
School Captain Meg Reckord gave
her ANZAC day address in which she
asked the crowd to consider the
damaging, ongoing after-effects of
war, especially those suffering Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder.
A rendition of ‗Christmas in the
Trenches‘ was sung by a teacher trio
and finally Year 7 student, Tom Burn
performed The Last Post.

College Winter Uniform
A reminder to parents and students
that from the beginning of Term 2
students should be wearing their
winter uniform.
A full list of uniform requirements is
available on the College website
and your child‘s Communication
Diary.
The College has been advised by
Coast Road clothing there will be
some delays in supply of College
winter uniform.
If parent/guardians are unable to
purchase College uniform we are
asking their child wear clothing as
close as possible to the College
uniform and provide your child with
a note, signed by a parent/
guardian, explaining the situation.

Thanks also to Ms Battista and Mrs
Errey, in particular, for their support
at various points.
Molly represented NSW against
strong competition from the other

achievement and a great tribute to
her against the backdrop of the
many demands of Year 12.
Molly is a great example to all

the Bega Valley.
It could be a documentary, a
cartoon, a drama, a comedy, a
filmed performance of music or
drama – its up to you and your
ideas, you could make the film
alone or in a group. It could be a
project as part of one of your
School subjects or just something
new that you would like to try.

Used stamps sought to support the Missions
Used postage stamps are collected
throughout Australia by the Mary
MacKillop Foundation to support the
various charitable works of this
organisation.
For many years the collection of
stamps has been raising much
needed funds. All it takes is a few
seconds to remove any postage
stamps from correspondence you
receive.
If you work in an office please ask
your staff to save the stamps.
Last week Sr Rosemary Hart and Sr
Brigid McMahon, St Joseph’s
Convent, Eden, received a letter
of thanks from the Sisters of St
Joseph. The stamps the College
community collected recently
went to auction and raised over
$3000!
Donations of stamps can be left at
the College Front Office.
Any further queries should be
directed to either Sr Rosemary or
Sr Brigid on 6496 1517.

dealt with a farming family battling
financial and emotional pressures. All
of Year 10 saw 'King Hit', a
performance looking at the
growing prevalence of alcohol
