Wherever they play, Boney Fields and The Bone`s Project leave
© Matthieu FAURE – Brenda TURNNIDGE Wherever they play, Boney Fields and The Bone’s Project leave behind them a lasting impression. Like a high energy gunpowder trail, dispensing a cross of blues and funk which unites and rallies the masses in a heavenly musical communion. Fronted by the dynamic, trumpet player, singer/songwriter Boney Fields, the combo has gained a bigger and bigger following. The bowler-hatted musician has come a long way since founding his own band, ten years ago. If he comes from Chicago Blues, he has expanded the contours with an iron willed determination. A lover of soul, groove, jazz, Boney Fields knows, as do certain other musicians of his generation, that the life of blues exists through constant evolution and rejuvenation. With humility and conviction, he follows his own path finding his own originality on the way. A man resolutely of his time, yet also immersed in the heritage of his musical forefathers, Boney Fields proves that the blues still has some great days ahead of it. Romain GROSMAN (Vibrations – Jazz News – Les Inrocks …) CHANGING FOR THE FUTURE BIOGRAPHY Boney Fields hails from the Chicago ghetto, where he was born at the end of the fifties. In his family, some played blues, others gospel. He studied jazz at college choosing the trumpet, « cause I loved Louis Armstrong » he recalls. Amongst his favourite artists : James Brown, Tina Turner and Otis Redding. Soon after, he started hanging out in the blues clubs in the « Windy City ». The guitarist and singer Jimmy Johnson gave him his first break. Then Little Milton, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, James Cotton, Junior Wells and Lucky Peterson called on his services. Always open to other styles, he found himself playing on TV shows and recordings alongside Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Bootsy Collins or George Clinton, the Kings of Funk. « I love music in all its diversity, the blues of course, but also rhythm’n’blues, soul… » In 1997, Boney Fields became the trumpet player, MC and musical arranger for Luther Allison as well as his son Bernard Allison, who performed regularly in France. The French music scene inspired him : he performed alongside Alpha Blondy, Patrick Verbeke, Liz McComb, Paco Sery and Cheick Tidiane Seck. Armed with this rich and varied background, Boney Fields could finally launch a solo career. He founded The Bone’s Project in 1998. Reflecting the plurality he so cherishes of, his band is composed of musicians from Senegal, Mauritius, America, Martinique, Britain, Italy, Denmark, France … In 1999 he produced « Hard Work » his first self produced album. An atmosphere « Blaxploitation » soul-blues horns : the musician wrote most of the tracks. On 2003’s « Red Wolf » released under Nocturne Label, Boney Fields follows several styles : from a JB’s style groove to classic ballads, from the Motown influences to autobiographical accounts, reminiscences of his blues conversion in Chicago, via pure funk recalling the greatest hours of Tower Of Power …The album was warmly welcomed by the public and received a well-deserved acknowledgement from the critics. With their third opus « We Play The Blues », (released by Nocturne), Boney and his band are setting the record straight, if ever there was any need to. The stance is really clear : Bone's Project music will not be confined to any cliché linked to the blues memorabilia. Martha High and Fred Wesley, (respectively backing singer and trombonist with the legendary James Brown), Lucky Peterson, Corey Harris and harmonica player Jean-Jacques Milteau backed up Boney Fields on this top level session. Boney Fields adds his name to the short list of musicians who have moved boundaries while above all staying relevant, with an open and contemporary sound, born from plural influences. With between eighty and hundred-andforty concerts a year, it’s with live performance that Boney Fields has forged his reputation. Live At Jazz A Vienne, his fourth album recorded in 2008 at the prestigious Festival “Jazz à Vienne” bears the most hard-hitting and passionate witness possible, remaining true to Boney’s original spirit : let the people have a good time !
