Mayor’s
Message
Preschool
& Children’s Programs
“Stay active
this season!”
Welcome
Welcome to the Resort Municipality of Whistler’s (RMOW)
Recreation Program Guide. We are fortunate to live in
Whistler, an active community with a wide variety of
recreational opportunities. The fall is a beautiful time in
our community, with fresh mountain air, crystal clear lakes,
beautiful fall colours and abundant activities such as worldclass golf, hiking and mountain biking.
This fall/winter guide provides a wide range of activities for
all interests, ages and abilities. From preschool programming
to tai chi, swimming, skating, squash, cross-country skiing,
and hockey, there is something for everyone.
One of the things that drew me to Whistler was the yearround recreational opportunities. In the fall and winter, I run
and walk with our dog frequently through the Emerald Forest
to the Valley Trail and on to Rainbow Park. Early fall hikes
with friends and family along the Flank Trail are a personal
favourite.
Whistler features two majestic mountains for epic winter skiing
and snowboarding; cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails;
and an outdoor skating rink located right in the heart of the
Village. In the winter, I personally enjoy downhill and crosscountry skiing, snowshoeing and an occasional spin on the new
ice sheet in Whistler Olympic Plaza.
I encourage you to get outdoors and explore the Lost Lake
cross-country trails and experience winter in Whistler from
an entirely different perspective. With approximately 25
kilometres of groomed and track set trails, maintained by the
municipality, Lost Lake offers incredible views of Whistler
and Blackcomb Mountains. Enjoy the new amenities with
family and friends at the Lost Lake PassivHaus and have fun
on the trails!
If you’re looking for a quick outdoor activity right in the
heart of the Village, why not rent some skates and hit the ice
at Whistler Olympic Plaza? In 2011, the RMOW transformed
part of Whistler Olympic Plaza’s Great Lawn and Pavilion
into a skating amenity for the winter season. Visitors and
residents loved it and in 2011, we welcomed close to 15,000
skaters to the plaza.
If you’re looking for a break from the outdoors, visit the
Meadow Park Sports Centre (MPSC), Whistler’s community
hub for sports, recreation and more. The multipurpose
facility provides residents and visitors with a services and
amenities including fitness programs, swimming lessons,
public skating, a six-lane pool, kids’ pool, sauna, steam room
and hot tub. The facility also houses an arena, squash courts,
weight room, and a fitness studio.
After thirty-nine years of living in Whistler, I continue to be
grateful for all the great things there are to do here.
Stay active this season and I’ll see you on the trails!

Registration Service Agreements
The Resort Municipality of Whistler has chosen to
partner with various organizations who provide quality
speciality programs that we can not offer ourselves. These
organizations are responsible for the delivery of the program

based and we require a minimum number of participants in
each course. Avoid disappointment – register early. Don’t wait!
Programs with insufficient registration will be cancelled up to
seven days prior to the start date, in which case, full refunds will
be granted. If an individual cancels from a program seven days
or more prior to the start of a program, a full refund, less a $20

after this period. In medical cases, refunds are pro-rated and a

free membership to the Meadow Park Sports Centre for all

participate in recreational activities which will support the trend
towards active living while addressing the issue of affordability.

A healthy life through swimming
When you choose the Red Cross Swim Kids program,
you’re getting:
• A program based on research
• Proven excellence in teaching
• Strokes and safety skills– the combination that saves lives
• A focus on fitness and personal performance
10-level program for children 6 to 12 years of age
Help your child develop a healthy lifestyle through
swimming. Your child will learn to swim and stay safe in a fun
environment that promotes a personal best and celebrates
individual success.
The 10 levels allow for solid progression. Children learn
competitive and survival strokes, and build their distance and
speed, while focusing on making safe decisions in, on and
around the water.
In each level, participants are evaluated based on
performance criteria and progress to the next level once all
criteria have been successfully completed.
RCSK 1 Swimmers receive an orientation to water and
the pool area and work on floats, glides and
kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by
working on the 5m front swim.
RCSK 2 Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move
through the water and to remain at the surface.
Swimmers work on the front swim (5m) and learn
about deep-water activities and proper use of a
Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Fitness activities
include the 10m flutter kick and a 10m distance swim.
Aquatics
RCSK 3 This level provides an introduction to diving, and
teaches swimmers how to make wise choices
about where and when to swim. Endurance is
achieved by building strength in the flutter kick
and a 15-metre swim.
RCSK 4 This level introduces the front crawl (10m) and
back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers
work on kneeling dives, surface support (45
seconds, deep water) and developing a greater
sense of self-safety by understanding their own
limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim.
RCSK 5 This level introduces the back crawl (15m),
sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives
and treading water. Front crawl increases to
15m. An introduction to safe boating skills is also
included. Endurance is developed through a 50m
swim.
RCSK 6 This level refines front crawl with a focus on
hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with
a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m),
and introduces elementary backstroke (15m),
safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing
assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive
and their ability to tread water in deep water for
1½ minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin
kick and a 75m swim.
RCSK 7 This level builds skills and endurance for
the front crawl (50m), back crawl (50m) and
elementary back stroke (25m) and introduces
whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about
airway and breathing obstructions, reach
assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is
increased to a 150m swim.
RCSK 8 This level is an introduction to breast stroke
(15m) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn
about the dangers of open water, hypothermia,
the performance of rescue breathing on children
and adults, and standing shallow dives. Swimmers
participate in timed treading water activities using
the eggbeater skill for 3 minutes to improve their
ability to remain at the surface in the event of an
unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a
300m swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances
are increased to 75m each.
Aquatics
RCSK 10 This level is a final assessment of the strokes for
technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back
crawl 100m, elementary back stroke 50m, breast
stroke 50m and sidestroke 25m). Swimmers learn
about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and
head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance
is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a
500m swim.

When it comes to body sculpting, Zumba® Tone raises
the bar (or rather, the toning stick). It combines targeted
body-sculpting exercises and high-energy cardio work with
Latin-infused Zumba moves to create a calorie-torching,
strength-training dance fitness-party. Students learn how to
use lightweight, maraca-like Toning Sticks to enhance rhythm
and tone all their target zones, including arms, abs and thighs.
Zumba Tone is the perfect way for enthusiasts to sculpt their
bodies naturally while having a total blast. For Zumba Tone,

that you are familiar with many of the steps. Zumba Tone is
great way to challenge your body in new ways and add some
variation from the Zumba classes you already know and love!

exercises alternating with cardio power surges, balance work
and core. Finish off with a full body stretch and relaxation
session.
Gentle Flow Yoga | End your hectic day with a slow paced
Yoga flow that’s easy on the body and the brain. Reap both
physical and mental benefits while we slowly move between
asanas and breaths. A great class for yoga ‘newbies’ or those
with injuries in our non-competitive environment. “Let the
pose fit your body, not your body fitting the pose.”
MAC | Exercise design with older adults in mind! Move to
music for increased strength, balance, and coordination
while socializing with your peers in a fun, non-competitive
environment. Classes will provide special assistance for

Yun Yoga | Unwind from your day in this calming class. Yin
yoga compliments a dynamic and active lifestyle well. In yin

asanas (postures) chosen in this practice stretch energy lines
stimulating healing and nourishment of the organs, and move
prana (life force) through the body.
Zumba | It is an exhilarating, effective, easy-to-follow, Latininspired, calorie-burning dance fitness-party™ No dance
experience required. Zumba is for all shapes and sizes. Bring
a smile and your sneakers and get ready to have fun dancing
