History
Landscape
Famous Faces and places
The Lake runs a serpentine course
for eight miles through expansive
vistas of Lakeland’s highest
mountains. Helvellyn at 3,117ft
(950m) crowns Ullswater, at the
South-Western end of the valley,
standing on a mighty plateau
approximately 9 miles (14.5km) in
length and 4.5 miles (7km) wide.
Did you know Donald Campbell
broke the water speed record here
in 1955 and according to legend; the
valley was one of the last places in
England where fairies actually lived?
Romantic Insight
Its beauty has inspired famous
poets, artists and writers for
centuries. One of the most famous
poems ever written “The Daffodils”
was penned after a lakeshore walk
by William Wordsworth and his
sister Dorothy on 15th April 1802.
These delicate wild flowers can
still be seen on the lakeshore in the
Spring.

Kailpot Crag (Devil’s Kail-pot)
An old tale based on a outcrop of rock, taking its
name from a pothole at the base, thought to have
been created by the erosion in a depression. The
last appearance of fairies in Cumbria is said to have
been right here in 1850. Jack Wilson saw them
pack up and leave for good one moonlit night, at
Martindale, above the shores of Ullswater.
Explore Martindale and
Fusedale
One of Lakeland’s least visited
yet most stunning valleys.
Martindale is a real hidden gem
and home to one of the oldest
Red Deer herds in England.
