Every girl hopes their wedding
day will be one to remember,
but when Princess Therese
of Sachsen-Hildburghausen
said yes to Bavarian Crown
Prince Ludwig, she had no
idea her celebration would be
remembered and continued
for centuries to come.
No expense was spared
on behalf of King Maximilian
I Joseph of Bavaria. Ludwig
and Therese’s wedding was
a massive celebration that
included 40,000 guests and
featured a 36,000 foot horse
race in a large meadow just
outside of town. Due to the
overwhelming success of the
race, Maximilian I Joseph
was quick to agree that the
2 festivities be repeated every
year. Taverns and “eating
houses” were also allowed
to provide tempting fare;
among them was the original
Hofbräuhaus.
Two years later, the royal
brewers created a beer
especially for the festival.
With a deep golden color and
higher alcohol content, the
world-famous Oktoberfestbier
from Hofbräu Mϋnchen
was born.
Today people all over the
world still commemorate the
union of Ludwig and Therese
during Oktoberfest’s 16-day
celebration in Munich. Many
try, but no party comes
quite as close to the
original like Hofbräuhaus

At Hofbräuhaus Chicago we have been lucky enough to have some
amazing guests tap into your favorite flavors. Dr. Michael Möller, CEO
of Hofbräu Brewery in Munich, 97.9’s sexy Loop Girl Shannon and our
very own Mayor Stephens have all conquered the mallet, and we plan
to keep this tradition going well through Oktoberfest. Who will tap the
kegs of our Oktoberfestbier? Be here Friday, September 13th and

THE WALK OF FAME
The celebration of Oktoberfest
is not your average party. Dating
back to 1887, the opening day
ceremonies begin with a four-mile
parade featuring elaborate floats,
bands and more than 7,000 men,
women and children, many proudly
sporting the traditional lederhosen
and dirndls.
At promptly 11am the parade lead
by the Münchner Kindl-the little
Munich city’s coat of arms — enters
the grounds of the Wiesn (short for
Theresienwiese, or Therese’s fields).
The mayor arrives in a festive
coach followed by civic dignitaries
and horse-drawn brewer’s carts
adorned with flowers.
At noon the parade winds its way
to the “Schottenhammel” tent,
which also happens to be the oldest
private tent at Oktoberfest. It is here
that the mayor finally taps the first
keg of beer and declares O’zapft is!
— The keg is tapped. Now the fun
can really begin!
Besides the beer, another can’t miss
part of Oktoberfest is the famous
Ferris wheel, Riesenrad in German.
The Ferris wheel at the Oktoberfest
fairgrounds is a staggering 48
meters (158 feet) high and offers
riders breathtaking views of the
Munich skyline and the celebration
below. It is such a fairground fixture
that it was even incorporated into
the official Oktoberfest placards
in 2002 and 2004.
Temptation is in the Bag
Even with all the excitement
in the air, you can’t miss
the unmistakable aroma of
our fresh-roasted almonds
and pecans. These toasty
temptations are glazed with
cinnamon and come out piping
hot for a flavor you’d be nuts
to resist.
What sparked this sweet
tradition? In the 19th century
the world’s largest fair was held
annually in Munich; among
the array of Bavarian
food and beverages
like meats, delicacies
and Hofbräu brews, these
roasted confections became
a crowd favorite. The love for
this sweet snack continues
today and can be enjoyed with
any of our authentic German
cuisine and beer.

Even more excitement is being poured into Oktoberfest as we introduce the very
first Oktoberfest Stein-Holding Competition! Every Friday and Saturday from
September 13 - October 26, we will host two competitions per night and two winners
will take home a six-pack of our limited Oktoberfestbier. Each winner will also be in the
running to win the Grand Prize of a dinner for 10 (up to $500 value) at Hofbräuhaus
Chicago. Whoever has the longest time after the last competition on October 26 will
be crowned the very first Oktoberfest Stein-Holding Champion!

Martin Surges from Elmwood Park already has a taste
of stein-holding victory. This summer he held on for an impressive 7 minutes, 41 seconds and beat out other
champion hopefuls including the current best-time holder, Tony Christopher (7 minutes, 5 seconds). On the last
night, it came down to the ultimate showdown between Martin and Christopher. The crowd was on their feet
cheering on the duo, but it was Martin who came out victorious. He will go on to represent us at the Fifth National
Masskrugstemmen Championship in New York City. If he can prove victorious in New York City, he will win a trip
to where it all began — Munich, Germany! The trip includes round-trip airfare for two, hotel accommodations,
a guided tour at the Hofbräu brewery, and dinner at the original Hofbräuhaus. Good luck Martin!
