Lomita has been awarded Platinum status through Southern California
Edison’s Energy Leadership Program. The City of Lomita is the first South
Bay city to reach this status and results in an energy cost savings of over
$22,000 per year. The City has utilized several energy efficient strategies such as the use of a “cold process” built up roof qualifying it as a
“cool roof” and earning the city a rebate; automated HVAC controls
allowing the building to be offline when unoccupied and come back
online during business hours; installation of T8 ballasts and 32 watt
lamps reducing usage by an estimated 40%; installation of waterless
urinals and low-flow toilets at city facilities saving an estimated 3,900
gallons per year; and installation of low flow irrigation heads at all city
facilities where appropriate. Lomita is proud of its efforts in the area of
energy efficiency and water conservation.
The City’s water and energy conservation efforts were recently highlighted in the South Bay Watch Newsletter published by the South Bay
Cities Council of Governments. The article can be found on page 4 at
http://southbaycities.org/sites/default/files/newsletter/

City Water Production Facility
The City of Lomita supplies its customers with a combination of
pumped groundwater and imported water from the West
Basin Municipal Water District. The City constructed the Cypress Water Production Facility (CWPF) in 2012. THE CWPF
consists of a 5.3 million gallon reservoir and Well No. 5
(located onsite) and related water treatment system. The
treated water is blended with West Basin water. The blend
is 40% well water and 60% imported water. This approach
makes the city less reliant on imported water which could be
in shorter supply if the drought continues and imported water
costs, which continue to increase every year, are significantly
higher than well water.
Council Meetings
Regular City Council meetings are held the first and third Monday of the month at 7:00pm. Meetings are held in Council Chambers 24300 Narbonne Ave., Lomita 90717. In May 2014, the City Council approved a change in the day and time of regular Council meetings. Starting on August 13, 2014, the regular City Council meetings will be held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each
month starting at 6:30 p.m.
Council Agendas Available
To enhance service to residents, City Council agendas are posted at City Hall, Lomita Park and the Lomita Library bulletin boards at
least 72 hours before a meeting. Agenda and staff reports are also available online on the City website at www.lomita.com/cityhall.
If you are interested in receiving the agenda via email, please send your request to [email protected]. For more information
call City Hall at (310) 325-7110.

SUMMER NEWSLETTER
Drought 2014: What You Need To Know
Governor Brown has declared a statewide drought emergency and is asking all Californians to reduce their water use by 20%. The
year 2013 was the driest year in recorded history for many areas of California, and current conditions suggest no change in sight for
2014. No Californian can afford to waste any water. In fact, the State of California has created a website especially for the drought at
www.saveourh2o.org. Check it out for great water saving tips and the latest information on the drought.
Did you know that 50% of water is used in landscape irrigation? Now is a great time to get rid of the lawn and plant a “Water-Wise
Garden”. The City has two water-wise gardens for public display which can help with some great planting ideas. One is located right at
City Hall (24300 Narbonne Ave.) and the other is at 26255 Appian Way. Plus Metropolitan Water District is offering rebates for turf
removal and smart irrigation systems. Check out their website for more information on this rebate, plus many others, at
www.socalwatersmart.com. Also, it should be noted that within the City you may only irrigate your yard between the hours of 10pm and
8am, and do not over water to the point of water run-off on sidewalks and driveways. Further, sidewalks, driveways, and other nonpervious surfaces may not be hosed down for cleaning.
The City will continue to seek creative ways to conserve water and promote public participation as water conservation continues to grow
in importance. If you would like additional assistance with planting a water-wise garden, or need additional direction to the right rebate
websites contact Noriko Kikuchi, at 310-325-7110 x 156 or at [email protected].
Water Conservation: Voluntary Measures
There is a lot residents and businesses can do right now to conserve water. Here is a list of actions you can take today to conserve water
and save money at the same time:
 Within the City you are only permitted to irrigate your yard between the hours of 10pm and 8am.
 Plant drought tolerant landscaping
 Install low flow shower heads
 Minimize flushing the toilet
 Showers use less water than baths only if you take a short shower

SCHOOL & GROUP TRIPS
We take reservations for group field trips to the museum,
including pre-kindergarten and K-12 school groups, special
needs organizations, and senior groups. Our tours last approximately 30-45 minutes depending on the group and the
questions asked. We cover the history of our museum, our
Founder, history, and information about our trains and their
purpose. We have samples of coal and talk a little about
fuel types and what was used during the operation of our
1902 Southern Pacific steam locomotive.
PARTIES
Looking for that very special location for your next event?
The Lomita Railroad Museum offers a beautiful, secluded,
and secure park setting that will make your celebration
memorable. Birthday parties, family reunions, weddings,
business events. The Irene Lewis Annex Park, part of the Lomita Railroad Museum complex, is the perfect place for you.
The museum is a beautifully recreated turn of the century
passenger depot across the street and is filled with authentic
railroad memorabilia. Climb aboard the 1902 Southern
Pacific Mogul steam locomotive and the 1910 Union Pacific
caboose on the station platform and experience the grand
era of steam railroading. The museum is located in a quiet
residential area, just one city block east of Narbonne Avenue.
