The Birth of Christ
Andrew T. Miller, Artistic Director-Composer
I have been told by many that in order to become a
great artist you have had to endure great suffering.
It has felt, at times this year, that I have dealt with
enough to pass around an even share for the entire
Seattle artistic community! My mother also told me
that anything worth doing takes great courage and
perseverance -she was right. The work that you will
see today is the result of many years of writing, the
dedication of countless wonderful people, and the
unified vision of many organizations.
The Birth of Christ debuted in its original form in
2004, transformed and traveled to Ireland where it
was filmed to air on PBS during the 2007 Christmas
Holiday Season, and has now returned to the Northwest
for the Federal Way Chorale to present to you today.
It still moves me -- which means that I was only the
instrument by which God utilized to transcribe this
piece to the page. The Chorale has worked diligently to
prepare this work again, and it is better than the original.
The characters of this amazing story will come alive for
you in a new and impactful way through outstanding
solo, choral and orchestral performances. Mayall the
small statements of "yes" by these characters inspire you
that no positive act of ascent, however small, is ever unnoticed or un-necessary.
My good friend and mentor, Mr. Don Barrows passed
the baton to me at the end of last season to guide the
Chorale to a new era. We have an outstanding group of
dedicated individuals that love to sing and it will show
in their performance. Everyone in the Chorale willingly
displays their hearts on their sleeves and exposes their
soul during performance. If this group continues
to express themselves so genuinely and completely
through their music, the Federal Way Chorale will
prosper for years to come. I hope you enjoy the
performance and that it adds to the mystery we celebrate
at this most sacred time of year. If you enjoy The Birth
of Christ, please mark your calendar to join the chorale
in the spring for our presentation of the completion
of this trilogy in my new work entitled Passion and
Resurrection. The concerts will be held on May 12th
and 13th back here at St. Luke's Church.

Composed and Directed by
The Federal Way Chorale was formed in 1993 by a small
group of Federal Way musicians under the leadership
of Don Barrows. Our first concert was Handel's Messiah, and we have performed at least two concert series
each year since then, featuring major works by Bach,
Beethoven, Handel, Mozart, Vivaldi, and many others,
along with smaller works and octavos from Broadway
musicals, spirituals, and the general music repertoire.
The Chorale has performed both with the Auburn and
Federal Way Symphony Orchestras. Don Barrow passed
the baton to Andrew T. Miller last year, and we are
featuring his compositions during his first year as our
director.

The Federal Way Chorale is dedicated to prOViding the
opportunity for musicians of all ages in our community
to perform quality music. Our performances are held in
Federal Way in the hope that residents of Federal Way
and nearby communities can have a quality musical experience without having to journey to Seattle or Tacoma.
If you feel we have met that goal, please tell your friends
how much you enjoyed the performance, and encourage
them to attend. If you or any of your friends would like
to become a part of the Chorale, our auditions will be
held on Saturday, January 27, 2007 for the spring concert
series where we will feature new, original music from
Andrew T. Miller, Passion and Resurrection.
Call 253-250-3326 for more information. We also invite
you to become a Friend of the Federal Way Chorale,
helping with the many non-musical aspects of our
organization and concerts. As ticket sales do not cover
expenses, please remember us when you make your
year-end charitable contributions. We are a 501 (c) (3)
organization under IRS Rules and donations can be sent
to the Federal Way Chorale, PO Box 26182, Federal Way,

A performance is not a concert unless there is an audience - thank you for being part of our concert. Life's

Prologue lOne Blessed Night
One blessed night, a star shone bright;
A Symbol of loves' pure light.
Come from on high to stable low,
So that all the world might know It came for them.
Gloria, Gloria sing this blessed mom.
Gloria, Christ the Lord is born.
Gloria, Gloria, Gloria, sing Gloria.
One blessed night so long ago
Came into our lives the prophecy foretold.
The promise made of old had finally come to pass.
The Savior of the world had come at last.
A light for all the world to see,
That would save a sinner like me.
Then heaven and earth sang glories of praise,
And with one voice we still sing today!
The Annunciation of John
Standing within the sanctuary of our God
Do I offer this humble prayer.
And I hope, and I pray, that my people find a way,
and they heed the Lord - for He will answer our plea.

Fear not, Zecharias, for thy prayer is heard.
Thy wife, Elizabeth, shall bear thee a son, and thou
shalt call him John.
And thou shalt have joy and gladness and many
shall rejoice at his birth.
For 10,he shall be great in the sight of the Lord
And filled with the Holy Ghost even from his mother's
womb.
And many of the children of Israel shall turn to the Lord
their God!
He shall go before Him in the spirit and power of Elias
to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children

How can this be, this is impossible!
I am old and stricken in years. This is impossible!
I am Gabriel that stands in the presence of God
And am sent unto thee to share with thee these tidings.
But behold, thou shalt be dumb, not able to speak
Until the day that these tidings shall be performed,
Because thou believest not my words.
The Annunciation of Christ
One blessed night, a star shone bright
But out in the fields the shepherds shook with fright
For God had sent His angel to the earth
To tell them of the Christ Child's blessed birthLove's pure Light.

And the disobedient to the wisdom of the just - to make ready a
people prepared for the Lord. You son shall lead the way.
Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
And blessed art thou among women forever.
Hail, thou highly favored one.
Fear not, Mary, for thou has found favor with God.
For behold, thou shalt conceive and bring forth a Son
And shall call Him Jesus.
He shall be great and be called the Son of the Highest.
And the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of His father,
David
And He shall reign over the house of Jacob forever.
And of His Kingdom there shall be no end.
Fear not, Mary, the Holy Ghost shall come upon thee,
And the po~er of the Highest shall overshadow thee.
And that held Babe shall be the Son of God.
For with God, nothing shall be impossible!
I am Your humble servant, the handmaiden of the Lord;
The handmaiden of God. Be it unto me, according to Thy will.
She said yes for tomorrow, yes to the sorrow
Yes to the Almighty because she believed.
She said yes to be holy, yes to give fully;
Yes to the honor she would one day receive.
Hail, Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with thee.

And blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus, forever.
Hail, thou highly favored one.
She said yes to the promise of old that the prophets foretold
How a virgin would one day conceive.

By the blood of her Son, we will one day know peace.

Zecharias' Canticle
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel
For He has visited and redeemed His people.
Blessed be the Lord Who hath raised a horn of
Sleep, oh Babe, Babe of prophecy
The world has surely needed You.
Sleep, oh Babe, Babe that was foretold;
The world wonders what You will be .
This little tiny Child, He is my son .
This small and helpless Babe, He is the One
Sent from the throneroom of God, to me, for us.
Habein Yakir li, my dearest son.
I know He is the One, but first He is my son.
Is this the One we seek? Prophet, Lord, or Deity.
Worship Him as He sleeps? Could this be Him?
He is so meek. Messiah should gather His people,
Rule them as their Sovereign and King.
A descendent of David, to bring us back to the Law
A Ruler of rulers, peace He will bring for all.
Is this the One we seek? Prophet, Lord, or Deity?
Could this Child be the One, of lowly parents,
Their infant son?
He should be great to rule the nation of Israel!
He should be strong to bring us back to the Law!
He should stand firm, a proud descendent of David!
He should be mighty to bring peace for us all!
Is this the One? Could it be the One?
He's just a child so meek and mild. Is this the one?
Could it be the One? Is this the One?
Sleep, sleep little Babe, sleep for now
For one day Your sorrow will be their relief.
On the road You must travel, You will know such grief.
Despised, and rejected by those You came to save
But Your time has not yet come.

A Shepherd's Song
On this night, glorious night
We have seen marvels and wonders from heaven.
And on this night, glorious night
Christ the Savior is born in a stable.
We've heard the message of God born to man.
We go to worship, Messiah has come!
Why now? Why us?
We are shepherds, simple, lowly,
Watching our flocksby night.
When we saw the angel, we were terrified!
What had we done to anger our God?
But the angel said: "Fear not, for on this night
Shines a star over Bethlehembright.
The King of kings is born this night for you!"
