This is the very first recordings of the opening night of the orchestra at the Village Vanguard.
The band that set the standard for modern, innovative, swinging bid band jazz and that it has been
unmatched since. There’s a palpable and contagious energy in the room. This is the first time they
are playing Thad Jones very innovative writing for a big band. Great melodies, superb solos and
lots of interplay. Thad is the cheerleader, conducting, waving, shouting, clapping… you can hear him
throughout the recordings… it is really special! This is music that changed the way big bands played
jazz and ever since then, fifty years ago, the influence of Thad Jones and his band lives on.

The Quintessence was the title of an iconic 1961 Impulse! LP by Quincy Jones & His Orchestra and one can
hardly think of a better way to describe the sound of Jones’ modern, progressive and groundbreaking big
band at its pinnacle. The same sound can be heard on the outstanding new release, presenting a performance
by the band recorded that same year in Ludwigshafen by the German radio SWR (formerly SWF).
This previously unreleased concert is one of the very few testimonies left by this star-packed but unfortunately
short-lived formation, which was disbanded shortly after this European tour due to the leader’s impossibility to
afford its costs. The amazing music captured for posterity and presented on this set speaks for itself.

Willie Jones III explores the soulful side of jazz, performing tunes by his former employer
and great influence Cedar Walton, and debuting new arrangements of tunes by Eric Reed,
Buster Williams and more. Groundwork key tracks include the title tune and ‘Hindsight,’
both by Cedar Walton. Eric Reed’s ‘New Boundary’ is a tribute to modern jazz musician
Dwayne Burno. Throughout his career, Willie Jones III has lent his supple rhythm and buoyant spirit to artists like Cedar Walton, Milt Jackson, Horace Silver, Sonny Rollins and Roy Hargrove. Today, he continues
to become one of jazz music’s most sought out bandleaders.

This release compiles all of Rollins’ known
recordings from the March 1959 European
tour, presented here for the first time ever
on a single set. Included here are many
hard to find performances and even a previously unissued set taped in Frankfurt.
Pete La Roca was replaced on two occasions by great American drummers who
were living in Europe at the time: Joe Harris and Kenny Clarke. The long unavailable Aix-en-Provence concert with Clarke
contains Rollins’ last existing notes before
his self-imposed exile from music. This set
also contains Rollins´ only existing versions
of “A Weaver of Dreams”, “Lady Bird”,
“Cocktails for Two”, and “Stay as Sweet
as You Are”.

In 1960, celebrated jazz critic Nat Hentoff called
Charles Mingus to record a number of small group
sessions for a new label that granted Mingus complete freedom in the studio. All of the music from
these sessions is included on this set. Taped during
the apex of Mingus’ creativity, they showcase such
stars as Eric Dolphy, Roy Eldridge, Booker Ervin,
Jimmy Knepper, Charles McPherson, Paul Bley,
Tommy Flanagan, Jo Jones, and Dannie Richmond.
The most emblematic album produced during those sessions was Charles Mingus Presents Charles
Mingus.

It’s good that Altschul’s 3dom Factor is not an isolated
experiment, or one would hope that this second release
indicates some longevity. Free improvisation is often license for an abrasiveness that can obscure the substantial
intelligence and effort involved in a project but Altschul,

Dexter Gordon went down in jazz history as one of its most influential tenor saxophonists. Some
giants came before him but most tenor saxophonists who emerged after the mid ‘40s were influenced
by him in some way, from Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane to Jimmy Heath, Gene Ammons, Eddie
“Lockjaw” Davis and Johnny Griffin. Although 26 years have passed since Gordon’s death at 67 on
Apr. 25th, 1990, his influence hasn’t waned: one hears echoes in everyone from Joe Lovano to Eric
Alexander to Joshua Redman.

De Doelen Concert was part of his European tour in 1969 and should appeal to all completitsts. However its meeting
with the legendary German producer Conny Plank stands out as a monumental one. The equivalent of such fabled
unions as Prince and Miles Davis or Keith Richards and Gram Parsons. A coming together of a great American icon
and an adventurous young soundman from Deutschland that is as beautiful as it is unorthodox.
