About the
CONFERENCE
For thirty-four years, Texas higher education professionals in the fields of learning support, developmental
education, student services, and first-year experience have come to the CASP Conference to share their
expertise and discover new knowledge and innovative practices. This year, experts from across the nation
join us as we explore the transformative process thousands of college and university students experience
in their academic and personal lives as they pursue higher education.
A Fusion of Innovation, Implementation and Investigation, the 2015 CASP theme, illuminates our
shared promise of ensuring every student gains access to resources, personnel, and experiences which
will assist each individual in realizing his or her dream. In recognition that every student has unique
needs and every higher education professional has a role in assisting on the journey to success, CASP
celebrates the interconnectedness of our efforts. From the moment a student seeks admission to the
collegiate environment to the evening the student walks across the stage to receive that coveted certificate
or diploma, we embrace the shared responsibility of feeding each student’s intellectual, social, and
emotional hunger to succeed. Regardless of the discipline, department or division with which we align,
it is our calling as higher education professionals to assist students in shaping their future with resources,
beneficial educational experiences, supportive peers and mentors, and relevant opportunities. Viewed in
their totality, all these create a seamless pathway which leads to the successful completion of educational
goals and culminates in the attainment of a desirable career.
The Texas Association for Developmental Education, the Texas Chapter of the College Reading and
Learning Association, and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, along with our regional
partner Collin College, are pleased to announce that the CASP 2015 Conference will be held in Allen,
Texas, on September 30 - October 2, 2015.

Building Social Justice Critical
Thinking via Multimodal
Literacies in IRW
Ren VanderLind, Doctoral Teaching Assistant
Texas State University
1 - 4 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30
College students may face, hear, or read about issues of social justice on a regular basis. They also need
to develop critical thinking skills to help them advance through their college careers. By infusing reading
and talking about social justice into the Integrated Reading & Writing curriculum, students can build
awareness about and begin to critically analyze social injustices at the local and global levels. One way
to spark student interest in reading and writing about these issues is using multimodal literacies such as
graphic novels in the classroom. Attendees will learn about theory related to social justice and multimodal
instruction, and then engage in field-tested classroom activities as both teachers and students. By the end
of the session, attendees will have a deep understanding of theory and practice. They will also walk away
with classroom materials and a sample curriculum ready to use or adapt for their IRW classrooms.
* Refreshment breaks included.

What We Can Do Outside the
Classroom to Help Students
Succeed Inside the Classroom
Stephen L. Chew, Professor of Psychology
Samford University
1 - 4 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30
Students often have difficulty adjusting to the academic demands of college. Traditional resources to help
students make this adjustment focus on tutoring content, improving time management, and reducing
stress. My approach is to help students become better learners. Research shows that students who are
explicitly taught how to learn do significantly better. This instruction can be given outside the classroom
and is just as relevant to academic support programs as academic ones. Furthermore, knowing how to
learn is an important life skill for success. My goal is to explain and demonstrate the principles of learning,
so participants can determine how to integrate them into their tutoring.

THECB
TEXAS TOWN HALL
Dr. Suzanne Morales-Vale
Director of Developmental and
Adult Basic Education
Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board
The Texas Town Hall has been a popular session at CASP Conferences for
over 30 years. Most practitioners know that in order to improve student
learning, persistence, and completion in Developmental Education, the
Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) has administered
many grants to the field designed to catalyze innovation. Beginning
several years ago, work began to rethink how placement could be more
efficient and accurate. The TSI placement assessment was implemented
in Fall 2014.
Simultaneously, significant innovations to improve the acceleration of Developmental Education students
and minimize the points where they might drop out are being piloted and scaled up. Mathways, NCBOs,
and Integrated Reading and Writing classes across the state are ongoing initiatives. More changes relating
to students who test at the Adult Basic Level may be coming soon. Discover what is working and what is
on the horizon in Texas by taking advantage of this opportunity to visit with THECB staff.

Motivation is Not Enough:
Supporting Students in
Developing the Skills for Success
Karen Huxtable-Jester, School of Behavioral and
Brain Sciences - University of Texas at Dallas
1 - 4 p.m. on Friday, October 2
Students bring high hopes to their pursuit of an education, but too often, they also experience obstacles
that can interfere with their success. In this workshop we will identify typical obstacles and then develop
a repertoire of strategies that will allow us to be proactive in helping students to cope with these obstacles.
We will discuss ways to improve students’ academic resilience and self-regulation as well as ways to create
an atmosphere that promotes help-seeking and autonomy. Being compassionate to students’ struggles
does not require that we lower our standards or our expectations — after all, if we do so then we really are
not preparing students for the next steps in achieving their goals. Rather, we can help students understand
what it takes to learn effectively, how to develop the self-discipline to do what it takes, and believe that
their efforts will be successful.

Closing the Gap
Laura Foster-Eason, Marti Miles-Rosenfield,
Candace Thomas-Cooper, and Suzanne Jones
Collin College
1 - 4 p.m. on Friday, October 2
Having fully integrated our Developmental Writing and Developmental Reading programs in Spring of
2014, we at Collin College have learned important lessons along the way about meeting state guidelines —
and staying sane. In this workshop, we will share our experiences developing an in-house professional
development program, the methods we followed creating and refining new assignments and departmental
finals, and the strategy we’re currently under-taking for our program assessment. We will also discuss ideas
for integrating faculty members in addition to courses, blending personalities, teaching perspectives, and
varying educational backgrounds.
