Have you noticed something different about your Community News? Hope you

Once again thank you for sending your articles to me. I have received a few

We hope you enjoy the spring issue.

Sixty Plus Luncheon Club
In order to continue our service to the elderly residents in the borough,
we desperately need more volunteers to drive or escort on our
minibuses. This would take as little as one and a half hours a week.
Alternatively, if you do not wish to commit to a weekly slot, you may be
prepared to volunteer on a casual basis. Additionally we are looking for
volunteers to work in our kitchen.
Please help us to continue with our service! Phone Shirley or Carol on
01707 643602 between 8.30am and 1.30pm weekdays or Shirley on
07980 540232 anytime.
Please help us help your local
hospital
The Friends of Potters Bar Community Hospital are seeking new
members for their committee. People who are able to help with the
practical side of organising and setting up important fund raising events
such as the Hospital Fair and the Carnival stall would be very welcome.
Meetings are held quarterly and if you could be interested in this
worthwhile cause please telephone Alan Barth 01707 650866.
Given up blowing your trumpet?
We have helped to establish a secondary school and also a vocational
training centre in a very rural part of Eastern Uganda (2 years ago
readers kindly donated knitting machines that are being used to make
school uniform jumpers). We now plan to help the community to set up
a brass band for the District, but they have no instruments yet. Having a
band will not only be educational but it will also be income generating
as they will be able to charge to play at civic ceremonies, weddings, etc.
This is a remote community that is so far from the capital Kampala that
they do not get support from the charities that operate in and around
the capital. One of our objectives is to provide education and skills that
will enable people to support their families better in their community
without being tempted to leave and join the slums of the cities where
the streets are most certainly not paved with gold.
What we are wondering is whether any of your readers might have a
spare second hand instrument that they would be willing to donate.
The instruments we are looking for are: B flat Trumpets, B flat Cornets,
E flat Tenor horn, B flat Baritone, B flat Euphonium, B flat Tuba,
12"–14" cymbals.
If you would like to know more about the community, school and
Vocational Training Centre, we would be very happy to give more
information.

get to hospital appointments?
Hertsmere Community Transport is a charity that provides
accessible door-to-door transport for those who are unable to use
public transport or drive due to mobility problems. This service
provides better access to healthcare, greater community participation
and increased social inclusion.
Quote from a regular Shopper Scheme passenger: “When I get
on the bus and we all have a laugh, I really enjoy it”.
Three transport schemes are available to Potters Bar residents:
® The ‘Community Car Scheme’ which takes people to medical
appointments. Drivers for this scheme are volunteers who use their
own cars. This service operates Monday to Friday. Please give at least
3 days notice to book a trip. A local trip costs around £3 return, a
trip to a hospital such as Barnet could cost £9 return.
® The ‘Shopper Scheme’ uses a low floor accessible minibus which
picks people up from their homes and takes them to Tesco or
Sainsbury’s on a Wednesday and Thursday morning. The cost of a
shopping trip is £3 return. There is also a fortnightly trip on Friday
to other shops and town centres such as Sainsbury’s/M&S at London
Colney and Enfield. These longer trips cost £5 return.
® The ‘Ring and Ride’ scheme takes people to community activities,
classes, libraries, hairdressers and more.
All transport schemes are also available to wheelchair users.
Are you a wheelchair user or know somebody who is?
Wheelchair accessible cars are available for hire. These cars have space
for one wheelchair and up to three passengers plus the driver. There is a
£5 hire fee and then 45p per mile.
Would you like to make a difference to people in
Potters Bar?
Every year the Community Car Scheme carries out thousands of journeys
all of which are undertaken by volunteer drivers using their own cars.
Many trips are local and most are within a 10 mile radius. Some trips
will only take ½ an hour while others will take longer. Could you spare a
couple of hours a week/month to volunteer as a driver? Your expenses
will be covered.
If you would like to use any of the Schemes, or help as a
volunteer, please contact Christine on 020 8207 5055 or
[email protected] to find out more. If you
would like to use our Shopper Scheme please ring 020 8207 5115
on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday morning between 9.30am and
12.30pm. You can ‘Like’ Hertsmere Community Transport on
Facebook and/or ‘Follow’ HertsmereCT on Twitter. Website:
www.hertsmerecommunitytransport.org. If you wish to help
by making a donation please ring 020 8207 5055.

Annandale and Highview
Building nears completion
The new building, housing both Annandale Surgery and Highview
Medical Centre on the old Elms Clinic site, is nearing completion.
The roof has been finished and concentration is now on the
internal structure.
The expected completion date is in the first part of May and both
surgeries will keep their patients informed of progress.
Throughout the works care has been taken to ensure minimum
disruption to the locality, especially to visitors to Oakmere Library,
and this will continue to be the case up to finalisation of the move.
Both practices are eagerly awaiting the opportunity of working
from such modern facilities, and are sure that their patients will
share their enthusiasm when they visit the new building.
Working in the Community
– Care Home Activity
Co-ordinator
Starting as a Care Assistant, Shani Riley has worked in care since she
was 17. Her mother worked in a care home, and as a child, Shani
often helped the residents by reading stories, painting, and other
activities. At 22, she became Assistant Manager, but later left to have
her first child. When her second was born, Shani intended being a
stay-at-home Mum. But 5 years later she returned to the same care
home, soon to become a Senior Carer, and for the last 4 years has
taken on a newly created role as Activity Co-ordinator. Her training
includes NVQs 1–3, dementia care, separate courses in safeguarding
residents, health and safety, etc, and a specific course for activity coordinating.
After first checking her e-mails on arrival at the Home, Shani then
visits the sixty residents on three floors to wish them ‘good morning’.
On the ground floor the residents are mainly in residential care;
those on the first floor are in nursing care, and the upper floor is for
dementia nursing care. Ages range from early 50’s to over 100. Shani
plans activities that meet individual needs as well as for groups.
There’s a film club and swimming club; groups for art, music,
gardening, discussion, cookery and poetry; sing-alongs; trips to the
coast; fundraising events, both for the Home and other organisations;
and celebrations for birthdays, anniversaries and notable dates. They
also like to be involved in the local community, so the residents use
the Furzefield and Wyllyotts centres for activities, and also welcome
visitors to their shop and refreshment bar.
Shani looks out for individual needs, whether it be to talk, to do
something they have not done for some time, or to be comforted in
some way. For instance, a lady who said very little would fold her
arms as though she was holding a baby, so Shani gave her a doll to
hold. Her face lit up as she cuddled it and she became more relaxed.
Another, partially paralysed, lady who couldn’t speak, suddenly found
her voice during a sing-along, and called out to encourage other
residents who weren’t singing. Such responses, that make a person’s
day, give Shani enormous pleasure and satisfaction. She finds ideas
for activities on the internet, from talking with other co-ordinators,
and in all sorts of situations and interactions.
Everything about the job is good: the training, the workplace, the
staff. She loves elderly people and really enjoys working hands-on
with them, so she experiences a great loss when a resident sadly
passes away. Overall, Shani’s job is fun, positive and busy, and she
feels very privileged.

Potters Bar Brownies join
2,000 others to celebrate
the Brownies’ 100th
birthday
[email protected]
A New Dame for Potters Bar!
44 Brownies and their
leaders from the 2nd, 4th and
5th Potters Bar Brownie units joined over 2,000 Brownies from
every county in Anglia to enjoy the birthday party of a lifetime at
“Starburst” which was held at Butlins in Skegness marking the
big Brownie birthday!
The adventure-packed weekend was the first major event of
2014 to mark the 100th birthday, kicking off months of
celebrations involving thousands of Girlguiding members
around the UK.
During the weekend, Brownies and their leaders took part in a
range of adventurous activities including archery, circus skills
and street dancing. They were also entertained by the famous
Butlins’ Redcoats and a very special surprise appearance by X
Factor’s Sam Callahan!
A particularly special moment for the 2,500 Girlguiding
members was renewing their promise, in the first big
opportunity in the region to make the new promise for all
together.
Karen Smale Leader of the 5th Potters Bar Brownies, said, “In
25 years as a leader I’ve never seen so many Brownies in the
same place and at the same time having so much fun. We all
had a great time while we were at Starburst and will have many
memories to treasure; it was great to be part of something so
special – a fantastic way to kick off the big Brownie birthday.”
If anybody is interested in helping with Rainbows, Brownies or
Guides, or their daughter would like to join one of the units in
Potters Bar, please contact www.girlguiding.org.uk/interested
or Sue on 01707 850147.
Alison Peacock, Headteacher of the
Wroxham School in Potters Bar received a
Damehood (DBE) in the New Year’s
Honours 2014.
She led the school out of special measures
less than a year after her appointment as
Headteacher (Jan 2003) and it was
subsequently judged by Ofsted to be outstanding (2006, 2009,
2013). The Wroxham School was designated as a School of
Creativity in 2009 and as a Teaching School in 2011. The
Teaching School has established a Transformative Learning
Alliance of over sixty schools.
Alison’s teaching career spans primary, secondary and advisory
roles. Alison is a member of the Royal Society Vision committee
and is also a Senior Primary Partner of the Challenge Partners
group of schools. She is a consultant for the Cambridge
Primary Review Trust and a member of the Princes Trust
Commission for the proposed Royal College of Teaching. Alison
is a member of the DfE Expert Panel for Assessment and also
the NAHT Commission for primary assessment.
Alison’s biography sounds very grand but in fact she is an
extremely approachable, unassuming, kind and dedicated
teacher, much loved and respected by her staff, parents and
pupils. Her enthusiasm for educational development shines
through. She is very surprised and somewhat embarrassed by
her unexpected honour. Dame Alison (as she is now known) is
totally committed to teaching without labelling children’s ability
but instead encouraging them to achieve their full potential by
offering a wide curriculum. This inevitably ensures that
children have a joyous experience in school which is reflected
in the outstanding status of the school.

National Citizen Service (NCS)
Hertfordshire County Council’s
Youth Connexions Service is
recruiting young people in
Potters Bar and surrounding
area to take part in an exciting
and possibly life changing four
week summer adventure.
Supported by experienced staff young people will meet new people, make
new friends and gain new skills.
The National Citizen Service is a government funded once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity that helps young people build skills for work and life while
taking on new challenges and meeting new friends. Year 11 and 12 students
and 16–17 year olds not in education are supported to develop the tools
and beliefs to unlock their potential and make a positive impact in their
communities. Each place is worth approx £1,000 but the price to young
people is just £50, (or £35 for the shorter autumn programme) and there
are bursaries available to further reduce the price. There are no hidden
extra costs.
The programme is divided into five phases:
® Phase One – Induction and introducing the team members to each
other.
® Phase Two – A residential activity week packed full of team-building
problemsolving and challenging activities at a residential centre.
® Phase Three – A second residential week learning about the local
community and developing skills, meeting inspirational people and
organisations.
® Phase Four – Planning and developing a social action project. This is a
non residential week.
® Phase Five – A week delivering a social action project to make a
difference in the community.
For more information or to book a place on the July 2014 programme,
contact Youth Connexions on 01707 292645, or email Lily Webb at
[email protected] and put ‘NCS’ in the subject line.

Blue Ocean
The deep blue ocean full of beautiful fish, yellow, blue, orange
and red striped. Coral as pale as skin, a whale passes by taking a
huge mouthful of seawater and spraying it out, eating all the Krill.
Two scuba divers dive down and see a Hammer Head shark
sleeping in an underwater cave. They explore some more and see
a Great White shark munching and crunching on juicy meaty fish.
The jellyfish begin to come out and eat their food as it starts to get
dark. Some alligators start to come out as well; all daytime
animals go to sleep. Some crocs are awake in the morning and
night. When you come back from the Pacific, or any other sea,
you might be in hospital, injured or pouring with blood.

Winter Wonderland
Caramel rivers, as tasty as anything. Chocolate fountains, as brown
as a stick. Birds singing their magical, peaceful, beautiful songs.
Magic mice eating everyone’s cheese. Millions of sun patches on
everyone. Crystals hanging from chocolate houses. Amazing
shaped cake statues that you can eat but they will grow back.
Magical trees shining in the light. Shops have gingerbread shaped
into mansions and the size as well. Elves selling toys all around. A
unicorn running round and talking randomly.
Anthony P Costa
Winter
There is a creamy blue sky. There were silvery snowflakes falling
softly to the ground. I saw a flock of birds fluttering to a hotter
country. I see shimmering, sparkling and shining golden sun
patches through the skeleton-like trees. When night comes I see
the lights and there are red, orange, purple, blue, yellow, pink,
crimson, chocolate, mauve, ruby and green.
Spring – It was a sunny morning and there were gold, silver and
purple flowers popping through the green grassy ground. The
leaves were rustling on the ground. I wondered what it was as I
looked. It was a baby hedgehog with small prickles and a bird
with emerald eyes and he sang a song. I thought it was ‘frère
Jacques’.

Gala Evening at
Mount Grace School
Each year at the Mount Grace School Gala Evening, four special Awards are
presented to outstanding students.
® The Colonel Ross Award commemorates the work of Colonel Ross,
Chairman of Governors during the 1960’s and 70’s. It is awarded to
students whose contribution throughout their time at the school has
been particularly generous.
The 2013 winner of the Colonel Ross Award was George Bailey. George is at
Portsmouth University studying Civil Engineering.
® The 2013 Chris Jones Award was presented to Alex Nowak, who will go
to University in 2014 to study Astro-Physics. Chris Jones was an
outstanding pupil at the school who died tragically, shortly after starting
his medical training. His friends funded the award and it is presented to
students for an outstanding contribution to school life.
® The Gillian Hargreaves
Award is awarded for
Service to the School. Gillian
Hargreaves was a young
student who had been
successful in overcoming
educational disadvantage
before her death in a riding
accident at the end of her
first year at this school. This
year’s Award went to Gemma
Stanbrook (picture insert ).
Gemma has gone to Glasgow
University to study business
fashion.
® Gary Hudson was a young, unassuming student of great integrity who,
despite serious illness, stayed in the Lower Sixth to gain additional
qualifications, especially in technology. Sadly, he died before his success
was known. His family were anxious to mark his time at the school and
funded an award in his memory. This year it was awarded to Emma
Shewell-Cooper for Service to the School. Emma is now studying History
at Portsmouth University.

Cranborne Primary’s
Christmas Fayre
On Friday 29th November, Cranborne Primary School had their very
own Christmas Fayre in the school hall. We did this so that the
children in our school had a day to enjoy the Christmas festivities with
their friends.
On the morning of this day, some parents and teachers spent their
time decorating the hall for the fayre while the children were in their
classrooms doing their morning lessons. The dinner tables had
magnificent table cloths on them and were spread out all around the
hall. Each table had either an activity or a gift stall and it was
decorated in dazzling tinsel, and there was an enormous Christmas
tree in the corner.
All children brought in some money (£5 at the most) to spend on the
gifts they wanted to buy. There were loads of gifts such as: sugary
treats, accessories (for girls), practical jokes, gift bags, Christmas hats
and gifts for parents. As well as gifts, there were also activities like
‘decorate the cookie’, ‘guess the name of the teddy bear’, ‘adult
tombola’, ‘children’s tombola’ and ‘guess how many sweets in the jar’.
After the children put their gifts away, they went back in to Santa’s
grotto. Some of year six dressed up as elves. They called us in one by
one to visit Santa and he gave us a present.
When the fayre ended, we were positive that all the children had had
an amazing time. Thank you to Friends of Cranborne for organising
such a fun event. We were all ecstatic.

Year 5 pupils
Schools
Oakmere Primary has started 2014
with some new family focused events.
A weekly ‘Maths Lending Library’ has
been opened to encourage the
children to play a range of Maths
Games with their parents and practise
their calculation and problem solving
skills at home. The PTA of Oakmere
purchased the huge set of games that
cater for children from Nursery to
Year 6 and enables the children to spend quality time with their
family and learn in a fun and engaging way. “I’m really pleased
with the uptake in our first weeks!” said Liz Jones, the maths coordinator. “Many of our parents have asked how they can support
their children with their mathematical development and we think
these games allow parents and children to learn together.”
A growing tradition at Oakmere is for Year 6 pupils to put forward
charities they would like the school to support. The School
Council have selected Daniella’s choice to help the Lister Hospital
raise funds to build a fantastic new playroom for their young
patients. The children of Oakmere are raising funds for this
worthwhile cause through a variety of activities such as coin cards
and cake sales.
Later this term the whole school will be raising money for, and
learning about the work of UNICEF, whose Rights For Children
underpin the school’s behaviour policy. Oakmere thinks it is vital
children learn about their rights and accompanying
responsibilities, and want the pupils to become increasingly
curious about the lives of children around the world. “This really
enables our pupils to become more compassionate and caring
citizens for the future.” agreed Carolyn Hagger, PSHE subject
leader.
Oakmere has many events planned this academic year to share
with the school community its
belief in a broad engaging and
creative curriculum: an arts
exhibition, EYFS open
mornings, the annual Mini
Marathon and once again the
school will ring with music at
Oakfest! Exciting times!

Play Bowls
The Sport for All
Many of our new members came to the Potters Bar Bowls Club,
just off The Walk, having read about the Club in the Community
News. Bowls provides the opportunity to make new friends and
learn new skills. All who play bowls believe they feel fitter and
healthier, in mind and body, for the experience. Bowls
stretches the muscles you use and conditions others and in an
average game you bend more than 40 times, walk
approximately one mile, swing your arms more than 40 times
in delivering the bowls that weigh around 3 pounds.
The outdoor bowling season starts in late April and the Club
offers two Open Mornings on Saturday 3rd May and Sunday
11th May. All are welcomed, whatever age, gender, family,
partners or single. It costs nothing to try the sport of bowls,
just wear comfortable clothing and a flat soled pair of shoes.
The Club provides everything you need, equipment and
coaching staff. Plan to arrive by 9.45am, time for coffee,
registration and on to the green.
We continue to be a successful bowls club but extending the
warmest of welcomes to everyone and providing friendly and
focused help to quickly play the game of bowls from our
excellent coaching team.
Interested – what next?
If you would like to try bowls, come along on one of the
Open Mornings and if you would like more information
visit the Club’s website is www.pottersbar-bc.com to get
a feel for the Club, or contact Graham Marriner the Club
Secretary on 01707 660336, or better still email on
[email protected].
Finally, the social side of belonging to a bowls club cannot be
overstated. The Potters Bar BC playing season is from April to
September. However, through the winter months we continue to
provide members with a social programme that includes
Bridge, Crib, Quiz Evenings, Whist and Race Night. The New
Year party attended by over 60 members was a great success.
Make a date in your diary: 3rd May or 11th May ~ we look
forward to seeing you.

Potters Bar Tennis Club
get 3rd place for Herts
Community Club of the Year!
Potters Bar Tennis Club won
3rd place in the Community
Club of the Year category at
the 10th annual Herts Sports
Partnership Service to
Sports Awards 2013
ceremony held at the
University of Hertfordshire
on Thursday 5th December.
The award, sponsored by Watford Community Sports & Education Trust,
recognised and celebrated clubs who had delivered high quality sport
and commitment to their members and the Community throughout
2012/13.
The club’s community engagements and school/club links include their
coaching work with two mainstream schools (Wroxham and Essendon),
one girls-only independent school (Queenswood), a wheelchair tennis
group (Priory Grange) and a table tennis group (U3A – over 55s).
They’ve also added three additional coaching schemes in the last
eighteen months. These are with Park Education Support Centre,
Potters Bar Children with Special Needs Group and Four Swans (for the
visually impaired).
“We’re absolutely delighted to have even been considered for this
category, let alone to get in the top 3!” said Club Publicity Manager Paul
Holman, a member since the age of 10. “The success is even more
impressive considering we were up against 20 other sports clubs from
all over the county. It’s hugely rewarding to see all our hard work being
recognised at such a prestigious awards ceremony. This really is a great
club to be a part of!”
The Club’s internal successes also played a part in receiving the
accolade, particularly the introduction of two weekly Cardio Tennis
sessions, the continued Monday night annual Adult/Improvers session, a
successful Club Open Day in March 2013 and the integration of the
Club’s Junior and Adult Finals Days in September 2013.
Club Chairman Mike Wheeler said “The success of this award is down to
the continued hard work of our members. One of our core values is to
provide a community club that offers tennis for all standards and ages
and we’re delighted to have had this recognised. There’s a tremendous
spirit that exists within the club and we have magnificent volunteers who
work tirelessly all year round to help us achieve our goals.”

Formula One
With the 2014 season now getting under way, we
focus on Formula One.
Apex: The summit or, more relevantly, the point at which the
racing line meets the inside of a corner – providing the fastest
route.
Brake Balance: Maybe an equilibrium issue but really the
distribution of brake power between the front and rear wheels,
operated by a switch in the cockpit.
Blistering: Very quick you might think/can happen when a tyre
overheats and bits of rubber break off.
Clean air: Act of parliament perhaps or the situation for the
leader with his aerodynamics undisturbed in front.
Dirty Air: smog/disturbed air in front of a pursuing car.
Drag: Queen as an artist perhaps or the resistance to the air
encountered by a car at high speeds.
Drive through penalty: fine for jumping traffic lights/penalty
given by race stewards whereby the driver must enter the pits
and pass through at limited speed without stopping.
Call – Ian Cremin – 07833 678902
Email – [email protected]
Formation lap: a dance routine perhaps or a warm up lap
from the grid.
Green circuit: politically correct route/ a track surface that
has little rubber deposit on it and tends to produce slower lap
times as there is less grip.
Jump start: flat battery/when a driver moves away from his
place on the grid before the five red lights have been turned
off. This is monitored by sensors.
Lollipop: child crossing assistance or the stick held in front of
a driver during a pit stop, and used to signal to the driver when
he is clear to move.
Marbles: nothing to do with Elgin/small pieces of rubber that
wear off the tyres building up and making the track surface
slippery.
Paddles: oars maybe or the levers on either side of the
steering wheel which the driver uses to change the gears.
Pit: coal mine/the area of the circuit separated from the pit
straight by the pit wall in front of the garages. Where the cars
are brought for pit stops.
Pit Wall: seam in coal mine/where the team owner, manager
and engineers watch the race.
Pit Board: coal mine owners/a
board displayed to a driver from the
team to pass on information. This can
include race position, the gap to the
driver in front and as a signal to
come into the pits.
Plank: Sykes 1967 film or a strip
(originally wooden) fixed to the
bottom of the car to check that the
car is not running too low to the
ground.
Set up: heist/testing different settings
for wings, suspension and ride height
to find the optimum setting for a
race.
Tear off strips: series of reprimands
or see-through plastic strips which
drivers attach to their visor before a
race, the strips can be removed, one
by one, as they become dirty.

CHRISTMAS DAY LUNCH 2013
For those folk who wanted company that day
Once again wonderful support came from the community and churches,
and the whole day was so enjoyable for the 60 guests and the helpers.
Thank you to the United Reformed Church for the warm and ideal venue
for this special Christmas Day.
This 2014 Christmas Day I will be spending with my family and I hope
somebody, either in the community or from the many churches
represented in Potters Bar, will come forward and volunteer to coordinate the lunch and tea. Maybe there is another venue available. Please
consider how you might be involved and ring me on 01707 656311.
Thank you.

The Big Lottery (Awards for
All) comes up trumps
For tickets:
The availability of toilet facilities on the Potters Bar Allotment Assn.
(Highview Gdns) site has been on our radar for a number of years, with our
preference being an eco-friendly, composting type. Funding being a
stumbling block, we turned to the Big Lottery fund – Awards for All. After
much research and preparation, an application for £9,938 was submitted,
and amazingly granted. The toilet has been installed, a ramp built for wheel
chair access, and the area ‘beautified’. It is hoped that this improvement to
facilities available at Highview Gardens will enable even more people to
consider the practicalities of growing their own.
Committee members are available on site Sunday mornings between 9.30am
and 11.30am to discuss any matters arising relating to this article, including
requesting a plot.

Trip to New Delhi, India for
National Immunisation Day
Rotary’s involvement with Polio eradication started
in the 70’s and in 1988 the World Health Assembly
resolved to eradicate Polio from the world and the
Global Polio Eradication Initiative was born,
spearheaded by Rotary together with UNICEF, the
World Health Organisation and respective Federal
and State Governments.
In India Rotarians set up a National Polioplus Committee and their
advocacy efforts resulted in National Immunisation Days (NID)
taking place from 1995 onwards. On these days vaccination booths
are set up throughout the country involving vaccination teams
working to vaccinate millions of children under 5. Rotarians from
around the world have travelled to join their Indian colleagues in the
vaccination teams over the years resulting in the numbers of polio
cases reducing dramatically and there being no cases of polio
reported in India since 13th January 2011.
In 2013 I became one of those Rotarians travelling to Delhi with
others from Great Britain, Ireland, Belgium and Luxembourg joining
Indian Rotarians in administering the polio vaccine to all children
under 5 in a NID on Sunday 24th February.
On the 23rd February we were given a briefing about the NIDs, then
taken to two hospitals, the first one where we saw health clinics
being run in conjunction with the NID. In the second one we were
given a presentation by Dr Mathew Varghese, a pioneer in providing
treatment and corrective surgery for people affected by polio
followed by a brief tour of the wards where we saw some of his
patients receiving treatment.
On 24th February I worked at an Immunisation Booth inside a
nursery school in a very poor area of old Delhi together with
Rotarians from Dublin and Rajendra Place, Delhi. The health
workers and volunteers there gave me on the spot training before I
got involved in vaccinating the many children under 5 brought into
the Booth. I found there was a definite skill in administering just two
drops at a time, squeezing their cheeks gently to encourage them to
open their mouths and then placing the vaccine bottle to enable you
to manipulate the two drops in! The vaccines are in small glass
bottles stored inside cool boxes with ice blocks to keep them at an
even temperature until they were required. I also took a turn in
marking the little children’s ‘pinky’ fingers with a purple indelible
ink pen to show they had been vaccinated. Most little ones were
brought to the Booth by older siblings, who were keen to receive
coloured balls and masks being given out as gifts by us on behalf of
Rotary. Altogether we vaccinated 351 children at that Booth that day.
On 25th February with many other Rotarians I went to a health clinic
in Old Delhi to assist in one of the ‘mop up’ days, where the health
workers go house to house to check on all the under 5s living there
and those who hadn’t been brought to a Booth the previous day were
then vaccinated in the street and their ‘pinky’s marked. We
accompanied the health workers on foot and visited a number of
residential areas carrying coolboxes with the vaccines, medical
records and other documentation on which they recorded who was
seen and what action was taken. The Indian government, Rotary, the
World Health Organisation and Gates Foundation hoped that 157
million children would be immunised throughout India that day.
It was a very enjoyable and rewarding experience to take part and be
involved with India’s achievements to be declared Polio free. There
will be a formal Conclave ceremony on 25th February 2014 attended
by the President of India and leaders of a number of countries in that
area together with representatives of the World Health Organisation,
the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and obviously Rotarians to
witness India being formally declared Polio Free.
There are still 3 countries where Polio is endemic, Pakistan,
Afghanistan and Nigeria
and there has been
recent outbreak in Syria
so the efforts of Rotary
and the other partners
in the End Polio Now
campaign continues.
The photo shows me
administering the drops to a
young child watched by the
older sibling and Indian health
workers.

Potters Bar Community News
This is the first of a series of articles about
buildings of interest in Potters Bar.
Morven Park
Travelling out from Potters Bar towards Northaw and Cuffley,
along the Causeway, Morven Park is on the left and this contains a
Group of interesting buildings, Morven Park House, a former
stables, a cottage, farm buildings and Stormont School. The
buildings were built on the site of the Clock House, a former 16th
and 18th Century house that was demolished to make way for the
construction of Morven House, its lodge stables and farm
buildings. The style of Stormont School which is adjacent to the
Morven Park buildings is contemporary with Morven Park House
and was built at the same time.
The buildings are thought to have been constructed c1874 for
Arthur Sanderson. He was the owner of Sanderson and Sons Ltd a
wallpaper manufacturer in Chiswick. Sanderson worked closely
with Charles Voysey (1857–1941) a noted Architect , furniture
and textile designer who designed their printing works in
Chiswick (which is now a grade 2 listed building). Since 1923
Sanderson’s have supplied wallpapers, paints and fabrics to the
Crown. Although not documented it is implicit that Voysey may
have had a hand in the interior design of the Morven Park
Buildings.
The buildings (apart from what is now Stormont School) were
donated in 1928 to the National Trust by Mr Sanderson. Morven
Park house is currently a Care Home. The adjacent cottage is now
a residential property and the Farm Buildings are the
Headquarters of Potters Bar Girl Guides. In 1944 the owner of
what is now Stormont School was given permission to convert the
building into a private school.
Also it may be of note that the War memorial which now sits next
to Oakmere Park, once stood in the grounds of Morven, at the
junction of the Causeway and the A1000 until it was moved in the
70’s. This memorial was designed by Voysey, and Arthur
Sanderson’s son appears on it.
For anybody interested in the method of construction of the
buildings they can visit the Hertsmere Website to look at the list of
locally important buildings in Hertsmere.
This article is published with permission from Hertsmere
Borough Council. Community News is also grateful to Andrew
Gibbs, National Trust Warden of Morven, for his help in compiling
this article. If anybody is interested in the work of the National
Trust at Morven they can contact Andrew on

Re Mr Hicks the builder
Limerick House
In Mutton Lane opposite the fire station and just down a bit toward
the bridge is a rather pristine looking white building with a slate
roof called Limerick House. Today it is used as offices, and at first
glance not many would guess that it is in fact over 160 years old. So
why is it there, away from any other buildings and what is its Irish
connection?
It is all to do with the construction of the railways, built between
the late 1840's early 50's. The tunnel through from Hadley Wood
and the subsequent cutting were all dug out by hand; the JCB did
not exist in those days. To do this required a tremendous amount of
labour and of course by far the largest contingent of itinerant
labourers were the Irish, and a labour camp was set up for the
duration.
At this time Potters Bar was only a tiny little village centred along
the High Street area, nothing beyond this existed in the way of
buildings, so the labour camp was out on its own. The thing that
was most needed, you might have guessed by now was a pub and
this is what the building originally was. It was called the Pilot
Engine and existed for five or six years serving the thirsty
construction community. It also served the purpose of keeping
them out of the pubs in the High Street where fights between locals
and the builders were not uncommon. As the labour force moved
on there was no further need for the pub and it closed. However
instead of it being demolished, it continued to exist and, as a
tribute to the many Irish people that frequented it,became known
as Limerick House.
Les Chesson
Further to the article in the winter issue of the Potters Bar
Community News, by my old friend from Oakroyd Avenue, Derek
Oram, my parents purchased No. 19 Oakroyd, which was a
bungalow, early in 1932. In July the following year I was born in
the front bedroom, and as it turns out I was the first baby born on
the Hicks estate of Oakroyd and Elmroyd, and Mr Hicks became
one of my Godparents. In 1937 my father was elected to the
Urban District Council and because of this, he had a telephone
installed (the number 3027still forms part of my land line
number today). As we had the phone, 19 Oakroyd acted as a
temporary ARP post at the outbreak of the war until a permanent
one was established in Mr Hicks’ builders yard at the back of
Nos.15, 17and 19.
As Derek says, it was a great road to live in as kids with the fields
of Mr James the farmer from Bentley Heath, to play in. Another
memory of my time living in Oakroyd was during the latter years
of the war. During an air raid, the engine of a V1 rocket cut out
directly overhead and went on to crash into the field behind,
doing a lot of damage to our roof and rear windows and to the
backs of the houses in Oakroyd Close.

We’ll Meet Again
There’ll be bluebirds over Wyllyotts this spring as Potters Bar
Theatre Company marks the 75th anniversary of the outbreak
of World War II in 1939 with a nostalgic celebration of the
extraordinary songs, film music and comedy generated during
the six years of conflict.
The show offers much more than Vera Lynn’s wistful and
timeless classic after which it’s named. You can sing along to
Pack Up Your Troubles, Keep the Home Fire Burning and
Wish Me Luck, as well as movie music of the time from Wizard
of Oz to Oklahoma! and White Christmas.
‘Cheeky Chappie’ Max Miller and Flanagan and Allen will be
among the artists revived. And you’re bound to be humming
your way home to There’ll Always Be an England, Land of
Hope and Glory and Lambeth Walk, plus many, many more.
A chance to relive memories or discover the popular culture of
the wartime era for the first time, it’s a show not to be missed.

Cuffley’s main contribution to local history came in 1916 when German
Airship SL-11 crashed onto the village, having been shot down by Lieutenant
Leefe Robinson of the Royal Flying Corps. A mere 17 years later in 1933,
(meaning we have recently celebrated our 80th anniversary of course) The
Cuffley Players was formed to perform works written by one of its members.
For the next 38 years, plays were presented by the company in ‘The Cabin’,
the last remnant of a farm which had once occupied the site where the
Airship had crash landed. Conditions were basic; crossing backstage
involved a walk through the car park. If it was raining, an umbrella might
be provided. Then, in 1974, the field in which The Cabin stood gave way to
housing, some shops and a brand new village hall. As well as a health centre
and library, the new structure boasts a spacious main hall. This includes a
permanent bar and well equipped stage, incorporating a raised scenery
dock.
The Players have taken full advantage of their new home. Many technically
challenging shows have been made possible due to investment in
professional sound and lighting equipment and a hard working backstage
team. Their current membership numbers around 90, comprising those
wishing to be active in productions and those who are loyal supporters.
They present two full-length plays each year in March and November, and a
One-Act show in the summer, resources permitting.
They rehearse on Mondays and Thursdays in Cuffley (8pm to 10.30pm
approximately) for roughly 12 weeks, culminating in a run of five
performances, including a 3pm matinee on Saturday.
If your interest is in amateur drama done to a high standard within a small
group, please get in touch. If wild horses wouldn't drag you onto a stage,
no-one will try to coerce you into the limelight. If your skills are more
practical, there are numerous backstage jobs that make a show happen.
They are always on the lookout for new members in all departments and
there is no more rewarding hobby.
Why not pop in to say hello at one of their regular informal Rombouts
Coffee Mornings in the foyer of Cuffley Hall which run from 11am until
12.30pm? You will find someone to chat to about all aspects of amateur
drama in general and the Players in particular. Immediate future coffee
morning dates are: Saturday 22nd March, Saturday 12th April and
Saturday 17th May.
Their next Play is Table Manners, a comedy by Alan Ayckbourn which will
run from Wednesday 26th March to Saturday 29th. Tickets may be
purchased by calling the box office on 07857 841930. Why not follow
them on Twitter @cuffleyplayers, or ‘’like’’ them on facebook?

Choir
The Capital Arts Children’s choir, based at the Wyllyotts Centre
Potters Bar, is performing in the Raymond Gubbay Limited
production of ‘La Bohème’ at the Royal Albert Hall throughout
February and March. Music Director, Kathleen Shanks, said, ‘It
is an amazing experience for the Capital Arts children to be
working with world class singers, actors and dancers at the
Royal Albert Hall. Because of my work as a children’s music
director for West End shows and operas, the choir gets a lot of
professional work when a children’s chorus is needed. We start
to train the youngsters from the age of 5 in our ‘Stage Stars’
class before they move up to the children’s choir.
After ‘La Bohème’ the choir will be busy rehearsing for a
concert with boy band, ‘Blake’, as well as for a two day
recording session at the Abbey Road Studios. The Capital Arts
Children’s Choir also sing as the ‘Angelis’ choir for Simon

Stagecoach –
The stars of the future!
What an exciting year ahead for everyone at Stagecoach Potters Bar! Only a
month on from our last live performance of ‘Disney Mash Up’, we are well
into our technique term, and boy, do our talented students learn fast. With
our big summer show fast approaching, the children are busy learning
different dance styles such as hip hop, jazz, tap, Latin and contemporary,
taking on exciting harmonies in singing and learning challenging vocal
work, accents and physical theatre in their drama classes.
As always, our newest students have settled in fast as if they have always
been with us, and life-long friendships are blossoming. And those students
who were slightly shy last term, have come back like new children, full of
energy and excitement now that they know they are part of the Stagecoach
family.
Already this year we have had many of our students cast in professional TV
roles, and West End shows through our agency. It is always so rewarding for
us to see children performing, as for some it is a fulfilling hobby, and others
it is the first stepping stone to a professional career in the arts.
This year will see even more exciting and rewarding challenges for our
amazing students with our newly launched children’s parties, our big
summer show, our holiday workshops, our open meeting (for new
students/families to come and meet the teachers and principal and learn all
about us at Stagecoach). And we will even open a brand new Saturday
afternoon school in May due to our ever-increasing demand for places!
Our new Stagecoach parties mean that children aged 4–10 can have
amazing themed birthdays, and children aged 11–16 can host their own
murder mystery parties, with a ‘detective’ turning up to run the exciting
evening. What better way for your children to impress their school friends?
We look forward to seeing new faces at our open meeting – 6pm on
Thursday 1st May in our venue at Chancellor’s Secondary School.
If you know any local children who attend Stagecoach Potters Bar, I suggest
you get them to sign your autograph book, because they are well on their
way to being the stars of the future!
