Registered Teams - Junior Slam Series
September 16, 17, 18, 2016 Welcome Welcome to the Phoenix Slam, the premier U18 event in the 2016 / 17 Junior Slam Series. Kitchener-Waterloo Granite Club sets the stage for the Phoenix with an outstanding field of high performance women’s and men’s teams from across Ontario and the United States. We wish our teams good curling and trust you will find the Phoenix Slam to be one of the top competitive experiences of your season. The Phoenix Slam features 15 Women’s and 15 Men’s teams seeded into balanced pools of five for a Friday and Saturday round-robin. Slam format sees the top eight from the round robin advance to Sunday’s Final Round. Reaching the Sunday Finals is significant, since the top two women’s and men’s finalists receive an invitation to our U18 Player’s Championship Slam in April 2017. Our ROCKTalk junior speaker series on Friday evening features a double-bill of two powerful presentations. Entitled “Master Your Mind. Maximize Your Body”, part one, by mental trainer, Nicole Westlund Stewart focuses on managing stress, fear and performance anxiety. Part two by Stephanie Thompson shows us new ways to remain fit and healthy all season. The ROCKTalk is included free of charge for Phoenix Slam coaches and athletes. Additional tickets are available for $40 (payable by cash or cheque at the event) for family, friends, or others. Another first at the Phoenix Slam is the chance for fans, coaches and athletes to follow game scores and standings online via LiveScores available at juniorslamseries.com. You can also track team schedules, team stats (wins / losses, forces, steals, etc) and overall event standings for the enti re Slam weekend. We thank the team at Curl Coach for developing LiveScores exclusively for us. Event Format & Qualification for Final Round Teams have been seeded into balanced pools of 5 for Round Robin play. Each team will play a Round Robin against those within their pool. Following each team’s first game a shootout will be conducted which will assist in determining final seeding and for potential tie-breakers if required. Standings can change dramatically every draw. Shootout Results will be posted for full visibility. Once the Round Robin is complete, teams will be reseeded based on win/loss record first, then shootout score. Head to head results are irrelevant in this format. The top six teams (sorted by record first, then shootout) automatically qualify for Sunday’s Final Round. Any team ranked 11th or lower are excluded from playoff scenarios. Should teams 7 and 8 have a clear record advantage over teams 9 and 10 there will be no tie-breakers. Tie-breaker scenarios: 1. Teams 7 - 10 are tied at 2 - 2 (7 vs 10 and 8 vs 9), winners earn spots 7 and 8 for Sunday’s Final Round. 2. Teams 8 - 10 area tied at 2 - 2, teams 8 & 9 will play a tie-breaker, team 10 is eliminated, winner earns spot 8 for Sunday’s Final Round. 3. Teams 7 - 9 are tied at 2 - 2, team 7 gets the 7 spot and teams 8 & 9 play a tie-breaker, winner earns spot 8 for Sunday’s Final Round. Sunday Final Round The Final Round seeds top 8 teams with 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, 4 vs 5 as first round matchups. A performance incentive is in place for the entire Sunday Final Round. The top seeded team in each matchup earns last rock advantage in the first end and choice of rock colour. Winners advance to the Semi-finals. First round non advancing teams are eliminated from further play. Winners of the Semi-final will earn their right to play in the Phoenix Slam Final. Non advancing teams from the Semi-final earn the right to play in the Phoenix Slam Consolation Final. The Phoenix Slam Finalists receive an automatic invitation to participate in our U18 Players Championship in April 2017. Consolation winners earn the right to be invited to the U18 Players Championship should opportunity arise for invitation. Special NOTE: Coaches / athletes: Should any team earn their way into a Tie-breaker be prepared to play back to back games Sunday morning and plan accordingly for the potential of a four game day should you earn your way to the Phoenix Slam Final or Consolation Final. Overall Slam Competition Rules and Sweeping Guidelines Slam Competition Rules: Junior Slam Series events are self regulating competitions. Athletes and coaches must guide themselves according to the standards outlined in o ur competition guidelines. Our convenors do not officiate or referee the competition. This signed waiver applies to all Slams a team has entered in the 2016/17 Junior Slam Series season. Sweeping Rules: Teams participating in the Junior Slam Series must abide by the World Curling Federation (WCF) standard for brushes and sweeping. In June 2016, the WCF issued a statement. Please read and familiarize with these sweeping standards. Further detail and an additional statement about sweeping standards is expected from the WCF in September 2016. Slow play, slow decision making, slow pre and post shot routines can all have negative impacts on the game, draw, and event. Convenors will monitor pace of play and communicate to both the Coach and the Team if the pace of play will negatively impact the game or draw. Teams have 2 hours and 15 minutes to play an 8 end game complete with LSD for hammer. Teams will not be permitted to start an end with less than 10 minutes remaining in the draw time. Teams can start their game when the ice is ready. Should pace of play become a problem for any team (s), the convenor will determine best course of action to ensure the game completes on time.
