At Engineers Ireland, 22 Clyde Road D4
This talk examines the transformation of Belfast from a regional commercial centre in
the mid-1700s to a world industrial city by the eve of the First World War. Industries
such as textiles and ship building enabled rapid population growth, the inception of
public utilities such as water and gas, and the development of the region's road, canal
and railway networks.
Fred Hamond is a Belfast-based Industrial Archaeologist who has worked throughout
Ireland for the past 35 years. His work mainly entails recording and evaluating
industrial sites, but he has also been involved with restorations such as Blennerville
Windmill and Carrickfergus Gasworks. He co-authored Recording and Conserving
Ireland's Industrial Heritage (Heritage Council, 2002).
