The Heritage Society of Engineers Ireland present An evening lecture: BELFAST’S INDUSTRY AND INFRASTRUCTURE, 1750 - 1911 Image: Bird's eye view of Belfast, c.1863 by Dr Fred Hamond Monday, 9th February 2015 at 7.30pm At Engineers Ireland, 22 Clyde Road D4 This talk examines the transformation of Belfast from a regional commercial centre in the mid-1700s to a world industrial city by the eve of the First World War. Industries such as textiles and ship building enabled rapid population growth, the inception of public utilities such as water and gas, and the development of the region's road, canal and railway networks. Fred Hamond is a Belfast-based Industrial Archaeologist who has worked throughout Ireland for the past 35 years. His work mainly entails recording and evaluating industrial sites, but he has also been involved with restorations such as Blennerville Windmill and Carrickfergus Gasworks.
