It was truly an honor recently to speak with Ms. Peggy Kirk Bell and inform her she is the newest member of the Carolinas PGA Hall of Fame. Ms. Bell has been a pioneer and ambassador of the game for many generations. Ms. Bell’s was a Charter Member of the LPGA, member of the Curtis Cup, won numerous amateur titles during her playing career and has been a published author of two books. For over 55 years, Ms. Bell and her husband Bullet Bell have owned and operated Pinehurst’s fame Pine Needles Resort. The family also owns and operates Mid Pines Inn and Country Club. The Donald Ross designed Pine Needles has hosted three US Women’s Opens since 1996. I could go on and on with Ms. Bell’s accomplishments and contributions to the game of golf. I hope you will join me to celebrate Ms. Peggy Kirk Bell’s induction into the Carolinas PGA Hall of Fame during February’s Awards & Honors Dinner in Greensboro. Our Section’s Area Meetings and Area Challenges for 2013 have concluded. We had a total of 493 CPGA professionals in attendance during our Area Meetings. Congratulation to the ten two-man teams that won their Area Challenge and qualified for the Area Challenge Finals at the Greensboro CC – Farm Course, in Greensboro on October 13th & 14th. Our Area Meetings are successful and informative due to the effort of many. I want to personally thank Vice President Chad Newton and Secretary John Marino for taking the time away from work and family to travel in order to attend several meetings. I commend our Area Directors for arranging and organizing the location for each meeting and for making the extra effort to reach out to the membership encouraging our professionals to attend the meeting and participate in the Area Challenge events. Our Executive Director always the meetings organized and running smoothly. Special thanks to Dick Bradow, PGA Career Service Consultant for a very informative PGA Employment Service Report delivered at all the Area Meeting. Finally, I want to thank each our sponsors for their support of our Area Meetings: Cleveland Golf/Srixon, Bionic Glove Fairway & Green and Zero Restriction. Next month, our Board will meet at headquarters and develop the Section’s 2014 Business Plan. The Board will review this year’s Business Plan and the progress made related to each of our key initiatives for 2013. If you have any ideas or suggestions the Board should consider as a part of next year’s business plan, please give me a call or send an email. We had over 80% of the golf clubs, courses and facilities register to support Patriot Golf Day, I want to remind everyone to report and forward all donations to the Fold of Honor Foundation as soon as possible. Remember, you will receive 2 MSR’s for conducting, reporting and forwarding the funds. Mike Mike Casto, PGA President The Official Golf Car of The PGA of America 2 Dear Carolinas PGA Professionals Letter from the Executive Director In the last issue of “On the Fringe”, we put out a request to Carolinas PGA members to volunteer as walking ambassadors for the 2013 Wyndham Championship. Without question, our members answered that call. On Monday and Wednesday, for 3 pro-am events, a Carolinas PGA professional could be seen in each and every one of the 80 groups that played. That was a great display of support. Thank you to all those who participated! Although President Casto has already mentioned the success of our Annual Summer Area Meetings, I too want to make a couple of comments concerning their success. First, I want to thank the nearly 500 professionals who took time out of their busy schedules to attend. This is an increase in participation by approximately 10% over 2012. There was an also an equal increase in participation for the Area Golf Challenge. Congratulations to the ten Area Challenge Championship teams, I wish them all the best as they shoot it out in the finals next month. I would also like to take time to thank our sponsor partners who have supported this year’s area meeting and golf series. Long standing partner, Cleveland Golf / Srixon was again represented at each meeting. They provided education, golf balls to each participant, and a wedge for each closest to the pin winner. We also had two newcomers for 2013, Bionic Glove attended each meeting and not only provided education, but fit every participant with a Bionic glove. Additionally, Fairway & Greene / Zero Restriction joined as a partner and will provide clothing to all participants in the Area Challenge finals. Thank you to everyone that made this year’s summer series one of the best ever! By the time you read this, I hope many of you have conducted successful Patriot Golf Day events. If for some reason, an event did not take place at your facility, it is still not too late to stand up and be counted. If you would like, you can simply write a check, regardless of the amount, and show your support. By doing so, you will be included on the list of participating facilities. For the last year, nine Player Development Regional Managers have been working diligently to help train PGA professionals on some of the “best practices” for player development and increasing rounds at facilities. Rich Richeson, Player Development National Manager, will be in the Carolinas the last week of October to help train many of our PGA professionals. Because of the size of our section, Rich’s schedule will be somewhat limited. If you have a desire to learn from the best, please contact me to check schedule availability. As I wrap up my letter for this month, it is bittersweet as I let you know that Dick Bradow, our PGA Employment Consultant, has been selected to fill a new role with the PGA of America. Dick has been asked to oversee all employment consultants in the eastern half of the country. By taking on this new responsibility, it means he will need to give up the Carolinas Section as Employment Consultant. Dick and I each started in 1999, and I have personally watched him develop into what I believe to be the best employment consultant. He has been available 24/7 and has put his heart and soul into helping the Carolinas PGA professionals. Although we hate to lose him for the day to day support he has provided, he will still be connected as he will oversee our new consultant who should be named in the next few months. Should you have time to do so, please drop Dick a note and wish him well. He can be reached at [email protected]. Dick has been a true friend to the Carolinas PGA! Sincerely, Ron Schmid, PGA Executive Director The Official Golf Car of The PGA of America 3 Career Notes September / October 2013 By Dick Bradow, PGA PGA of America Employment Consultant Thoughts for Fall With the arrival of fall, many PGA Professionals will be faced with contract negotiations, performance evaluations, and possible thoughts about a job change. With this in mind, ask yourself the following questions about your current job and career situation: • Do I know how my employer measures my performance? • How did I improve my facility’s operational or financial performance in the past year? • Is my current job meeting my expectations? • Is my career where I would like it to be? • Do I need to improve my skills for my current job or for future opportunities? • If my dream job suddenly came along, would I be ready to go after it? If you don’t already have a regular evaluation process in place, ask your employer to give you an annual or semi-annual performance review. With regularly scheduled reviews, you can find out if you are meeting your employer’s expectations, learn what areas and skills you need to improve, and address job and performance issues before it’s too late. You can find performance review information and evaluation forms on the PGA Employment Center on PGALinks.com. If there are areas where you need to improve your skills or knowledge, develop a self-improvement plan. This can include the PGA Certified Professional Program 2.0, education programs at the 2014 PGA Merchandise Show, PGA Section and Chapter seminars, local college classes, online education, etc. If you have some issues with your current job arrangement, work with your employer and try to find solutions to resolve your major concerns. If you feel there is no resolution possible, then it may be time to begin formulating a plan to search for another position where you can achieve your career goals. Here are some things you can do to get started: • Develop a “wish list” about your ideal next job – position type, job priorities, facility type and amenities, location, compensation, ownership or management structure, etc. Having a clear picture of what your next job will look like can help narrow your focus when multiple jobs become available. • Review the resources available to you on the PGALinks Employment Center. Two of the most valuable tools are the Job Hunter’s Tool Kit and the PGA Career Fitness Manual, comprehensive guides to a variety of career and employment topics. • Update your resume so it showcases your experience, skills, and accomplishments in the most favorable manner. To help you get started, there are resume and cover letter tips and samples on the PGA Employment Center. • Review and update your CareerLinks profile, also on the PGA Employment Center. To maximize your potential of being notified about opportunities where your profile matches an employer’s search criteria, it’s important that your profile accurately reflects your future job preferences, that your skills and experience are up to date, and that your work history is complete. Continued on next page The Official Golf Car of The PGA of America 4 Career Notes September / October 2013 • Work on building your network of contacts that can help when the right job becomes available. They may be able to assist you in learning about non-advertised jobs, researching a job opportunity, and helping get your foot in the door with a potential employer by using their own network, writing letters of recommendation, making calls on your behalf, etc. I am available to help you in developing your job search strategy, reviewing your CareerLinks profile, critiquing your resume, and utilizing the PGA employment resources available to you. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if I can help in any way. A Personal Note If you attended any of the August Carolinas PGA Area meetings, you may be aware of some recent staffing changes at the PGA of America office and within the Employment Services Department and how that will affect my service to the Carolinas PGA. The PGA has asked me, along with my colleague Jeff Beaudry, to move into new roles as Co-Directors of Employment, with me overseeing the Employment Consultants and PGA employment activities in the Eastern US, and Jeff in the Western US. To allow Jeff and me to best function in our new positions, our Employment Consultant territories and section responsibilities have been reduced. In my case, this will involve phasing out of my service to the Carolinas PGA and its members and employers. I will continue to serve the smaller Indiana and Kentucky sections in conjunction with my new Director duties. As a result of this, along with the retirement of long-tenured Employment Consultant Wayne Kauffman, a new Consultant position has been created to serve the Carolinas and Middle Atlantic Sections. I will be involved in training and onboarding of the new Consultant, as well as being a continuing resource for them in the future. The hiring process for this new Consultant position is currently in progress and the transition will take place over the next few months. During this time I will continue to be available as usual as your CPGA Consultant. While I am looking forward to the new challenge, this change also brings a great deal of emotion to me. Throughout my 14 years of service to the Carolinas PGA, I have enjoyed a warm and welcoming relationship with Ron and Jeanie Schmid, the CPGA staff, your officers and board, and the entire CPGA membership, and I have always enjoyed being a part of your section activities. It has been a privilege to serve as your Employment Consultant, and I will cherish the many fond memories of my association with the Carolinas PGA. Dick Bradow is an Employment Consultant for the PGA of America and a PGA Certified Professional. He can be contacted at (502) 458-2002 or by e-mail at [email protected]. Pine Needles GC The Official Golf Car of The PGA of America 7 Brahler Named 2012 Conrad Rehling Award Recipient PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – PGA Professional Alana-Marie Brahler, a PGA assistant professional at Forsyth Country Club in Winston-Salem, N.C., has been named the recipient of the 2012 Conrad Rehling Award for her contributions to Special Olympics Golf. Brahler was honored Aug. 27, at the Carolinas PGA Area IV Meeting at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. Brahler, 42, is a native of West Sunbury, Pa., and a 1994 graduate of Slippery Rock (Pa.) University, who turned professional in 2000 and was elected to PGA membership in 2010. Brahler has spent more than 20 years officiating and operating local, member and charitable competitions. She first volunteered with Special Olympics at a local level in 1998 teaching and organizing clinics. Since 2004, she has served as a technical delegate – organizing the golf venue and competition – at Special Olympics National InvitationalTournaments (NIT) across the country and at the 2011 Summer World Games in Athens, Greece. Brahler will be a technical delegate Oct. 17-20, at the 2013 Special Olympics NIT at the Seaview Resort in Absecon, N.J. “It is not about me; it’s about the athletes,” said Brahler. “It’s an honor and a privilege to work with them. I have been blessed to have worked with great people along the way. My mentor and someone who is an adopted father, Dr. Eric Wilson (the 2010 Conrad Rehling recipient of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and a Special Olympics Golf Committee member), along with Trey Holland (former USGA president), and all committee members, who have been inspirations to me. “It has been amazing how far Special Olympics has come since I have been involved. The highlight of any of these competitions is the interactions that I have had with my fellow PGA members from numerous golf courses throughout the U.S., current and former USGA staff members, golf course staffs, the Special Olympics delegations from each state and the families and coaches. The Special Olympics experience is a non-paying, fun job with the highest of rewards.” Brahler’s sports management expertise blended in Special Olympics where she serve at all National Invitational Tournaments since 2004, along with assignments at the 2005 South Carolina Fall Games, the 2007-09, and 2011 North Carolina Fall Games; the 2008 Virginia Winter Games Volunteer Individual Skill Testing, and the 2010 National Summer Games in Lincoln, Neb. “I got to know Alana when she worked at Grande Dunes Golf Club in Myrtle Beach as an apprentice then under Dr. Eric Wilson, and saw her work with Special Olympic athletes,” said Carolinas PGA Executive Director Ron Schmid. “I saw her passion, her tremendous love for the athletes. Her eyes lit up and their eyes lit up as they worked together. I know that Alana would say that it is all about the athletes. It also is about those who work with the athletes, people like Alana, who are committed to share with others.” Currently, 50 U.S. Special Olympic Programs offer golf training and competition, and nearly 23,000 participating in golf competitions in Special Olympics North America. The program is offered in more than 50 countries worldwide. The Official Golf Car of The PGA of America 8 Brahler Named 2012 Conrad Rehling Award Recipient “In the years that I have known Alana, I have seen how dedicated she is to serving any role to benefit Special Olympics,” said Craig Pippert, Special Olympics North America Senior Manager of Sports Development. “She is someone who goes both feet into an event to ensure that it is run at a top-notch level. I think that Conrad Rehling would be very proud of Alana receiving this award.” Special Olympics International reports that there are more than 4.2 million Special Olympics athletes – ages 8 and older— representing more than 170 countries. Golf is one of 30 Olympic-style summer and winter sports offered by Special Olympics. About Special Olympics Golf Special Olympics Golf, part of a worldwide sports program for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, offers five levels of competition for athletes with different ability levels. Ranging from individual skills competition to alternate-shot team play to individual stroke play, Special Olympics Golf allows athletes to grow in the game as they gain experience. The Official Golf Car of The PGA of America 10 CPGA Partners with Southeast Links Card We are pleased to announce an exciting partnership we have formed with the Southeast Links Card. Not only should this partnership raise a substantial amount of money for our Growth of the Game initiatives, it will also generate rounds and revenues for your courses. The Links Card was founded 22 years ago in the Northeast, where they dominate that market with 140 courses and thousands of members. The corporate offices were moved to SC six years ago, and they are now duplicating the success they have had in the Northeast here in the Southeast with the Southeast Links Card, which will include the premier courses throughout NC, SC, & GA. As part of our partnership, they have agreed to donate a percentage of each card sold back to the section and with an estimated membership base of 30k-50k, that is not only substantial money for the section, but also a great increase in revenues for your courses. It’s hard to imagine a course in the section that is not looking for additional revenues. We are excited about this partnership. The success of this partnership will depend on course participation, which is why we are asking all of you to enroll your courses into the Links Card Platform today. To enroll your course, simply click on the link below, fill out the form, and that’s it. As a Links Card course, besides an increase in rounds and revenues, you will also have complete marketing access to the entire Links Card database, at no cost to you. Patriot Golf Day 2013 Patriot Golf Day Weekend 2013 is here! Golf facilities all over the Carolinas hosted fundraising events for the Folds of Honor foundation over Labor Day weekend. The Folds of Honor Foundation awards scholarships to the families of soldiers who have been wounded or killed in action. Last year the Carolinas PGA Section raised over $515,000 and we hope to top that amount in 2013! We would love to hear what your facility did for Patriot Golf Day! Each year Carolinas PGA Patriot Golf Day events get bigger and better! The October Issue of the CPGA Newsletter will highlight various events from around the Carolinas. It can include anything from adding $1 to your greens fees for the weekend or as creative as CPGA Honorary President Karl Kimball got by painting the names of the fallen NC soldiers on the side of the 18th fairway at Hillandale GC. If your facility is hosting an event please send the story and photos to Sara Beth Gardocki, Media and Promotions Director of the Carolinas PGA Section at [email protected]! Half of the 76-team field, who began play at 7:30 AM this morning was able to finish their second round. The other half, beginning play at 11:40 AM, was not able to finish. At approximately 3:00 PM, torrential downpours caused the golf course to become unplayable and play was suspended. It was decided at 4:00 PM that play would not be able to be resumed. The tournament was then shortened to 18 holes, using the scores that were turned in from the first round of play on Monday. That left two teams tied for the two-man, four-ball stroke play championship with a score of 63 (-9). One team was comprised of River Landing Country Club’s host professionals Larry George, PGA and Jeff Hale. The other team included professionals Jason Toryk, PGA and Andy Gregory from Carmel Country Club in Charlotte, NC. The weather let up just enough to get both teams out on the course for a playoff to determine a champion. An 80-yard approach shot was chosen on the first hole of the River Course for the teams to duel it out, and that’s just what they did. The playoff went six rounds, with Jeff Hale finally sinking a 20-foot putt to secure the victory for the hometown team. The Carolinas PGA would like to thank Larry George, his staff, and the membership of River Landing Country Club for their hospitality. The champion Charles Frost is exempt into the 2013 Championship because of his outstanding play in the 2012 Assistant Championship; also Scooter Buhrman is exempt into the 2013 Championship like Frost off of his great play in 2012. The five qualifiers that will represent the Carolinas Section along with Frost and Buhrman are Patrick Rada, Aaron Black, Ray Franz, Burke Cromer and Ryan Tyndall. We look forward to cheering on all seven of our Carolinas Section players at the National Car Rental CPGA Assistant Championship. The Carolinas PGA Section would like to thank Patrick Mastandrea, PGA General Manager, his staff and the members of the Hasentree Club P for their hospitality this week. This event would also not be possible without the support of title sponsor National Car Rental and presenting sponsor Cobra Puma Golf.
