Its location and character made the rooms on the first floor of the Sukiennice a perfect place for the National Museum in Krakow. Initially the Museum shared premises with the Fine Arts Society. Polish Art Gallery of the nineteenth century, is open-museum. The exhibition in the „New Sukiennice” is divided into four sections: Hall of Chełmoński, Hall of Siemiradzki, Hall of Michałowski and Hall of Bacciarelli. The museum includes paintings and sculptures representing the era and the most important trends in Polish art of the nineteenth century. The exhibition in the Czartoryski Museum features close to 400 works from the main schools of painting in Europe, the most famous works in the collection are Leonardo de Vinci’s „Lady with an Ermine” and Rembrandt’s „Landscape with the Good Samaritan”. The exhibition also features works of ancient art and various military collections. Jan Matejko House – a Branch of the National Museum in Krakow and the oldest biographical museum in Poland is being re-opened to the public. The house at No. 41 Floriańska Street, where the famous painter once lived, has undergone extensive renovation and now holds a few surprises for visitors. And it is not only about the polychromy uncovered in one of the third floor rooms during the renovation work. First of all the whole exhibition layout has been rearranged to better allow us to get to know Jan Matejko as a husband and father, a student, painter and teacher, a traveller and collector, a pioneer in art conservation. City of Krakow History Museum – Ratusz Town Hall Tower A wonderful gothic building, built around 1383, the tower is the only remaining part of the now non-existent town hall. Visitors can observe the beautiful hall of the former chapel and in the ground floor hall a unique set of masonry seals. The third floor window offers a panoramic view of the city. The Main Building of the National Museum in Krakow features both permanent and temporary exhibitions. The permanent exhibition of the Gallery of XX Century Polish Art is intended to serve as a presentation of Polish art in the fields of painting, drawing, graphic art and sculpture. In the synagogue the most important cult object is a scroll with the text of the Torah. In synagogues still used for religious service, the Torah Scrolls are kept in an Ark placed on the east wall. In the old hall for women there is a display concerning the family and private life. There are exhibits connected with obeying the traditional nutrition rules in a Jewish home, everyday prayers and a life cycle from birth to death. A biographical museum devoted to the outstanding painter, playwright and stage designer Stanisław Wyspiański. The Palace of Bishop Erazm Ciołek (1474–1522), a great diplomat, humanist and patron of the arts, was build in the Gothic and Renaissance style in the early years of the 16th century as one of the most superb residences in Krakow. The history of the building, its architectural values and the proximity of the Archdiocesan Museum rendered it the best candidate to install the National Museum’s collection of Polish art from the Middle Ages to the end of the 18th century. But its story began much earlier... We need to go beneath the cobblestone surface of the Market Square to see the exposition. To wander into the depths of the earth is to travel back in time. The Barbakan is a round, brick construction, which is part of the city’s former fortifications. This Town House exposition of living interiors from the XVII to the XX centuries has three of the floors displaying the world in which Cracovians lived in bygone times. It includes temporary exhibitions on the history and historic buildings and monuments of Nowa Huta, Krakow’s youngest district. The NowaHutaMuseum gathers together all kinds of artifacts connected with the area, concerning both its recent history and the period before the town and steel plant were built, i.e. prior to 1949.
