What’s happening at St Martin-in-the-Fields January | February | March | April 2016 www.smitf.org Special Services and Events Sunday 3 January, 5.00pm Epiphany Carols Welcome to St Martin’s Join us for our evening celebrations featuring readings and music for this wonderful season of light, discovery, miracle, and revelation. With reflections by the Vicar of St Martin’s, Revd Dr Sam Wells and music by the Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields. Sunday 24 January, 10.00am Homelessness Sunday: Where is Love? Easter this year falls on 27 March. It’s the hinge of the year: for six weeks before it we mark the disciplines of Lent and the intensity of Holy Week; for seven weeks after it we mark the celebration of the resurrection. For St Martin’s, highlights of this season include the Lent study evenings, which this year explore Rowan Williams’ book Silence and Honey Cakes, which relates the wisdom of the early saints who dwelt in and near the Syrian desert. Our attention focuses on the services to mark Jesus’ Last Supper and crucifixion; this year Sam Wells is the preacher at our Three-Hour Passion service on Good Friday. Holy Week and Easter are also a major focus for our music-making. Our choirs will all be in action and there are some riveting concerts in store. A cherished part of our annual musical calendar is the St Martin’s Chamber Music Competition which takes place in March. This offers all the enjoyment of magnificent performance with the thrill of a prize that could change the lives of the winners. Details on how to apply can be found on our website and information on the performances on page 19. The weekly Great Sacred Music series on Thursdays will also reflect the themes of the season. Meanwhile our Issues of our Time Sunday evening series continues to look at topical and challenging questions – including management, assisted dying, imprisonment and climate change. Paper from responsible sources C115465 This publication was produced to ISO 14001-2004 Environmental Management Standards and 95% of the waste created during the process is recycled. We are delighted to welcome you into the heart of this vibrant community. Sundays, 12noon-1.00pm Inspired to Follow: Art and the Bible Story Wednesday 10 February – Ash Wednesday 8.30am Said Holy Communion with Imposition of Ashes 1.00pm Choral Eucharist with Imposition of Ashes Preacher: Revd Richard Carter 6.30pm Sung Eucharist with Imposition of Ashes Preacher: Revd Richard Carter Sunday 20 March – Palm Sunday 8.00am Holy Communion (BCP) 9.45am Palm Sunday Procession Silence and Honey Cakes: The Wisdom of the Desert Each Wednesday in Lent from 17 February until 23 March we invite you to join us for our Bread for the World, an informal Eucharist at 6.30pm. We will be taking the wisdom of the 4th-5th century desert fathers and mothers as the theme for reflection. This will be followed by a simple Lenten supper before we divide into groups to share thoughts and our own response to this desert wisdom. We will be using former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams’ book: Silence and Honeycakes: The Wisdom of the Desert as our guide. In it he explores the extraordinary wisdom that comes from this desert spirituality much of which resonates so strongly with aspects of our own modern spiritual search: • How can we discover the truth about ourselves? • How can we live in relationship with others? • What does the desert say about recognising our priorities? • How do we learn to pray? • How can we create a fearless community? The desert fathers and mothers offer a message of both profound simplicity and depth. Join us as together we journey into the desert to rediscover some of the most vital truths about our lives and faith. All are welcome. 4 Weekly Worship Monday 21 March Holy Week 8.30am Morning Prayer 1.15pm Holy Communion (DSC) 6.00pm Holy Communion with homily 8.30am Morning Prayer 6.00pm Holy Communion with homily Wednesday 23 March Holy Week 8.30am Morning Prayer 1.00pm Choral Eucharist 4.30pm Choral Evensong 8.30am Morning Prayer 1.00pm Great Sacred Music 6.30pm Maundy Thursday Liturgy Preacher: Revd Richard Carter This programme of hour-long gatherings over three terms covers the Biblical story from Creation to Apocalypse.
