Are you looking for an ideal weekend getaway or vacation
with a lot of excitement and pizzazz? Visit Scott Antique
Market in Atlanta, Ga., the second weekend of each month.
The event is the world’s largest treasure hunt with investment-quality antiques and has something for everyone.
From jewelry to pottery and pictures to furniture, you’re sure
to find something that piques your interest.
Each month over 2,800 exhibitor booths are filled by
vendors from around the globe buying and selling their
beautiful antiques. Converging on the Atlanta Expo Centers,
vendors set up their displays in anticipation of thousands
of buyers and/or “lookers” just browsing for something that
catches their eye or something they just can’t live without.
The success of the Atlanta market is due in part to the
geographical range in dealers. One can find pieces from any
period of time and from any place in the world. And there
are many one-of-a-kind, as well as very unique items sold
at the market. This market has become worthy of travel for
many southerners looking to refurnish their homes with
model, cherished pieces that will last a lifetime.
Located off I-285 on Jonesboro Road, the Atlanta market offers a festive and friendly atmosphere for everyone
involved. The numerous food vendors, a close proximity to hotels and the airport, and the size of the show only
add to the enjoyable
experience that keep
investors, vendors,
and buyers returning
month after month.
The Ohio Expo
Center in Columbus,
Ohio, also plays host
to Scott Antique
Markets
from
November through
March, and offers
an abundance of
antiques that everyone can appreciate
and enjoy. With over
800 exhibitor booths,
this is a market you
won’t want to miss.

quality antiques galore, you will discover those hard-to-find
items are easy to uncover. Located off I-71, this market is just
minutes from downtown Columbus, making it easily accessible and hard to miss.
Each month vendors are encouraged to bring “featured”
items that antique collectors seek and value the most. Items
include high-end furniture, glassware, vintage clothing, Civil
War collectibles, and antique jewelry just to name a few.
Whether you are looking to refurnish your home or just want
a special antique knick-knack, visit Scott Antique Markets.
These markets are very popular with interior decorators,
designers, shop owners and collectors who just love to shop
for antiques. And while some businesses may be on the
downslide with the economy, Scott Antique Market is the
ideal stock market alternative and a great way to invest your
hard-earned dollars.
Admission to the Atlanta market is a mere $5, which is
good for the entire weekend and provides access to both
indoor and outdoor vendors. While the Columbus market
has free admission for your shopping pleasure, there is a fee
for parking. The Ohio market is truly a favorite buying spot
for collectors and shop owners located in the Midwest.
Watch for the Ohio season opener Thanksgiving weekend,
Nov. 28-29.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – The 70th anniversary of the release
of the MGM musical “The Wizard of Oz” won’t pass unnoticed in the home state of its central character, the feisty
Kansas farm girl Dorothy Gale.
The capstone of Kansas celebrations of the August 1939
release of the iconic film will be Oct. 3-4 at a special edition of the annual OZtoberFEST in Wamego, the northeast
Kansas town that has embraced all things Oz more so than
any other in the state in which L. Frank Baum’s set the books
that inspired the movie.
However, commemoration of “The Wizard of Oz” at 70
already has commenced in Topeka, the capital city whose
capitol dome is the color of the Emerald City.
The Great Overland Station, the railroading museum,
is showing through October “All Aboard the Oz Express,’’
which contains just a fraction of the Oz memorabilia collected by Jane Albright since she was a girl growing up in
Topeka’s Potwin neighborhood.
“I grew up reading Oz books,” the former Jane McNeive
said recently at the display in the station’s Fink Exhibit
Gallery. The books, she said, “present Oz as a very real place,”
and one with which the young girl was fascinated.
“I remember when I was little, my parents were planning a
trip to Utah, and I was just
really cross that they
weren’t taking us to Oz,’’
she said. “It seemed
possible because when
you read these books,
Dorothy keeps getting
there.’’
By the time Albright
was a student at
Hayden
High
School and later
4
The University of Kansas, she was collecting more than
just Oz books. After friends gave her some Oz collectibles,
Albright began acquiring more, particularly vintage games
and toys.
Albright found items that date back to around 1900 when
Baum published the first Oz book. There are Valentine’s Day
cards, jars of Oz peanut butter, even an Oz snowboard. She
has posters of the original movie and its many international
editions. There are Oz books from around the world, especially Russia where Oz sequels have become so popular some
think it originated in that country.
One section is devoted to holiday ornaments, nutcrackers and other seasonal Oz items, with a nod to the fact that
Baum wrote non-Oz books, too, including “The Life and
Adventures of Santa Claus.”
Albright’s material also includes acknowledgement of the
spin-offs of Oz, including the Broadway musical “Wicked”
and other film adaptations of the Baum story or movies and
television programs that reference Oz or use it as a jumping-off point.
Although the walls are covered, display cases jammed and
exhibit areas crammed with Oz memorabilia, Albright said
visitors to her home wouldn’t think anything was missing
from her collection there because it is so extensive. She also
is putting together an exhibit of Oz dolls for the United
Fe d e r a t i o n
of Doll Clubs Museum in Kansas City,
Mo.
As an active member
of the International
Wizard of Oz Club,
Albright also is
organizing its
annual convention, which

All four of the still-living actors who portrayed Munchkins
in “The Wizard of Oz’’ who still make public appearances
will attend OZtoberFEST for autograph sessions and cameo
appearances in the Columbian Theatre’s annual production

will be hot-air balloon rides, presentations, a display of gowns
worn by Judy Garland and other activities.

Another much-anticipated lead-up to OZtoberFEST will be
the release next month of a 70th anniversary edition of “The

Each of the 1939 film’s original Technicolor camera negatives was scanned and reassembled in a new digital master
with twice the resolution seen in the master for the film’s

The one in Topeka will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Hollywood

We believe in “giving back”!
Why? Because the more you give the more you receive!
“I founded DealersMarketUSA.com because it was needed. It is an “Antique Dealers International
Network” and as members from countries from around the globe join we can all share in the
richness and flavor of these historic antiques and creative works of modern art. This is a “dealers
marketplace” where the public can shop and dealers can buy for them. We all love antiques, art,
pottery, books and a hundred other wonderful things from around the world, some we know, some
we’ve never seen before. Now, with DealersMarketUSA, under one umbrella, dealers and artists
can be more “easily found” and not lost in a sea of websites competing AGAINST one another!
We can and will compete WITH ONE ANOTHER and in doing so, we will provide a bonanza for
shoppers and some badly needed income for many of us in today’s marketplace and economy. Yes,
these are tough times, I know. All the more reason to use every tool at your disposal. If you have
items or art to sell, then why not expose it to even more people who don’t know who you are or how
to find your website? Times will get better again, and DealersMarketUSA.com can be one of the
“major tools” at your disposal to meet today’s challenges and tomorrow’s promises. Don’t judge too
quickly that this is just another website. It’s not! It is an affordable venue that in a short time will
put all the rest to shame because we offer more than “just a place to pay your money and list your
things”! We are all headed in the same direction. One can “go it alone” or join a network that helps
one another by helping ourselves!” Click on “About Us” on bottom of page for my “bio” if interested.

Treasures far and wide
at the 654 Mile Outdoor Sale
By Susan Eberman
T
hose “lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer” definitely
describes the Highway 127 corridor
from August 6-9. That’s when a 654 mile yard sale
billed as the “World’s Longest Outdoor
Sale” will wake up sleepy towns as it meanders from
West Unity, Ohio down through central Kentucky and east
Tennessee, scurrying through a corner of Georgia and ending
in Gadsden, Alabama on the Lookout Mountain Parkway.
“Lazy” refers to the
traffic as an estimated
half million shoppers
jockey for parking
places at an estimated
15,000 sales.
“Hazy”is the typical August weather in
this region - hot and
humid with frequent
afternoon thunderstorms.
And “crazy”....well,
that’s the fun part that
made it all worthwhile.
Anyone who enjoys
scurrying for bargains among friendly people and beautiful scenery will find
this one of their favorite events.
This tradition has been going on since 1987 when
Jamestown, Tennessee’s former County Executive, Mike
Walker, thought of it as a way to lure travelers off the interstates. Jamestown, Tennessee partnered with Jamestown,
Kentucky and yard sales were advertised along the 40 mile
stretch between these two tiny towns. This event has grown
as fast as the kudzu vine that invades the south.. It’s even
been featured on HGTV. The “new kid on the block” is a

Top Ten Tips for 654 Mile Outdoor Sale
1. Make motel reservations if you plan to stay overnight.
Accommodations along this predominately rural route fill
up fast.
2. Allow extra driving time The two lane roads are hilly
and winding, and the volume of traffic often moves at 15
mph.
3. Practice patience and defensive driving Often many
vehicles are jockeying for a few good parking places.
Sudden turns without proper turn signals are common.
4. Try the home cooked food Meals are offered by churches and civic groups. Prices are very reasonable.
5. Wear comfortable shoes Leave the sandals at home;
much of the walking from sale to sale will be through fields
or gravel lots. This is no time for a blister or broken show
strap.
6. Bring lots of small bills Don’t forget your own packing materials. Even the best prepared dealers run out of
change after thousands of sales.
7. Play like a tourist There are more than 400 attractions along the route. They are as diverse as the Bicycle
Museum in New Bremen, Ohio and Lake Cumberland
State Resort Park with a 50,250 acre lake perfect for fishermen and boaters.
8. You can sell, too You’re welcome to bring your
own inventory to sell. Anyone can set up free in a
safe place along the highway right-of-ways on a
first-come-first-served basis. Many flea market spots are
available on private land for an average price of $10 to $20
per day.
9. If you sell, think like a customer If you want to sell,
quality items in all categories that are fairly priced sell
best. Many dealers report that furniture, primitives, jewelry
and advertising items are their best sellers. No shoppers
are looking for common, chipped, or broken items.. New
items from wholesalers are quickly passed over because
there are dozens of dealers with identical inventories. Used
clothing is also difficult to sell.
10. Dress for success Consider wearing a shirt or cap promoting the Highway 127 sale. Items can be ordered online
from the sale website.: www.127sale.com.

New auction house
opens in Valentine Gallery
SUNBURY, Ohio – Jo Valentine, co-founder of central
Ohio’s multi-dealer Valentine Antique Gallery, has established a new offshoot company in partnership with Ohio
auctioneer Cynthia Schillig.
Known as The Antiques Auction Gallery, the new business
will base its operation and conduct its sales at the 12,000square-foot Valentine Antique Gallery in Sunbury. A debut
auction is planned for Oct. 9, and will include Internet live
bidding through LiveAuctioneers.com.
Valentine said the business will serve a growing need in
the region for a full-service auction house specializing in
antiques, fine and decorative art, collections and estates.
“When my husband John and I first opened our antique
gallery in 2003, we wanted to include auctions, but we were
so busy, those plans got sidetracked,” said Valentine. “During
the six years that we’ve operated our gallery, we’ve noticed
that there is a need here locally for an antiques and fine-art
auction house.”
Valentine said that when Cynthia Schillig expressed an
interest in co-founding an auction company, she knew she
had found the right partner for her new endeavor.
“Cindi is highly qualified. She has three auctioneer degrees
and is a certified estate specialist, but what impressed me
most was her love for the auction business and her incredible enthusiasm. For years she had been planning a trip to
Greece, but when she thought our first sale might be held
in September, at the same time as her trip, she was prepared
to change her travel arrangements. I told her, ‘Don’t do that.
Take your trip, have a great time, and come back refreshed
and ready to work.’ So that’s why we chose October 9th as
our first sale date.”
Valentine said the plan is to hold monthly auctions featuring fine art, porcelain, pottery, glass, silver, Oriental rugs,
lighting, and collections of various types, including antique
toys and dolls. The premiere auction will contain between
300 and 350 lots.
“Luckily, we have some very knowledgeable dealers selling
through our gallery who will serve as our expert appraisers
and catalogers,” said Valentine. “Another nice feature to our
operation is that we have ample gallery space, so the auction
goods can be previewed over an extended period of time
prior to auction day.”
For more information contact Valentine at 740-965-9519 or
[email protected]. Both galleries are online at
www.valentineantiquegallery.com.

The biggest dilemma shoppers face is where to stop. Larger
clusters of 50-100 dealers
seem an obvious choice. They’re the only way to shop if
time is of the essence. But at these
informal flea markets many dealers have already purchased from each other and this is also where tour buses
stop. While there are many good buys at larger sales, many
annual shoppers report finding their real bargains at the
individual yard sales.

A new generation enlivens the
Museum of the Confederacy
RICHMOND, Va.(AP) – When Ariel Brown was offered a
chance to transcribe the correspondence of the first family of
the Confederacy, the history major with a keen interest in the
South seized the opportunity.
Then the student from historically Black North Carolina
Central University in Durham let her colleagues know
she would be doing her research at The Museum of the
Confederacy.
“It was a stare of, ‘Oh, wow,
what is she doing there?’“
Brown, 25, said she
understands the reaction
from
fellow
African-Americans who
are offended by the
Confederacy.
Undaunted, Brown
was one of three N.C.
Central graduate students
who sorted through 42 boxes
of documents related to the family of Jefferson Davis, the Confederacy’s lone president. In a
museum that began as a memorial to the Confederate cause,
this was scholarship tinged with irony.
The paid interns worked in a second-floor room overlooking the back portico and garden of the former Confederate
White House, where Davis led the secessionist slave states
during the Civil War.
Museum president and CEO S. Waite Rawls III acknowledged there is a “gee whiz”’ element to students from an
historically Black university working amid the nation’s most
extensive collection of Confederate artifacts.
“Normal thought would be, a Black university in a
Confederate museum? That doesn’t make sense,” Rawls said
of the collaboration. “It’s a great statement, I think, to people
who look at everything through a political lens.”
Their work, he added, is consistent with the museum’s
growing mission to reflect the social history of the Civil War,
including the roles of women and African-Americans, not
just the generals, battles and weapons.
The door has not always been open to Black historians’
working on the Confederacy and the South. The late Dr.
John Hope Franklin wrote of the bigotry he encountered

documents.

– in the South and elsewhere – during
his distinguished career chronicling
African-American history.
Dr. Ervin L. Jordan Jr., an associate professor at the University of
Virginia who has written extensively on the Civil War, recalls
being turned away in 1986 by a
so-called Southern heritage group in
Richmond when he sought to examine
its records for a book he was researching.
“There have been African-Americans, myself
included, who find aspects of the Confederacy
to be of interest,”’ Jordan said. “But the response
of some Whites ... is something that has caused
me problems in terms of doing research.”
On the flip side, he said, “African-Americans
view the Confederacy as the evil empire.”
Still, Jordan credits the Museum of the Confederacy for
seeking connections with African-Americans and an historically Black institution such as N.C. Central.
Rawls and other museum officials are enthused with the
work of the interns, and the students in turn are grateful for
the opportunity.
Brown, Eric J. Richardson and
Clyde Wilson Sr. have painstakingly catalogued and transcribed
the handwritten correspondence
and other papers related to
Varina Davis, Jefferson’s second
wife, and their six children. The
Davis family’s story adds
nuance and some humanity to the patriarch, who has
been called the “Sphinx of
the Confederacy’’ because of
his private nature.
The work of the interns
will make the collections

more easily accessible to historians.
“It’s really essential to our
work,” said Lynda Crist, editor and project director of
“The Papers of Jefferson
Davis’’ at Rice University.
“We’re trying to put
Davis’s literary remains, as
someone called them, back
together in chronological
order. Any personal material is immensely valuable.”
Museum library manager Teresa E. Roane,
who has overseen the
work of the three, said
the transcriptions run from the mundane to the poignant:
from government-related materials to personal letters, such as
Varina’s tender correspondence with her husband after he was
jailed at Fort Monroe in Hampton for treason.
“These letters are both extremely revealing and intimate
because they both worried they might never see each other
again, that he might be executed
or exiled,” Crist said.
Wilson was especially taken
by Benjamin Montgomery, an
enslaved man who was Davis’s
personal secretary. He was given
extraordinary responsibilities
involving the family’s private
holdings. Wilson was dazzled
by Montgomery’s management
skills and his correspondence
with Davis, who obviously had
great confidence in this man.
“Benjamin
Montgomery
stands out as a star amidst a
dark situation,” Wilson, 54, said.
“Here is the possibility of what
can occur.”
Having grown up in the segregated South, Wilson said he
found these stories not only
inspirational but personal.

Museum of the Confederacy (cont.)
“I don’t want to disconnect from who I am,” he said. “Let’s
not be afraid of this Confederate narrative because we too are
a part of this narrative.”
Varina Davis offered a rich vein of material for all three
researchers. She was a supportive, loyal partner who did not
quite fit into proper Richmond society. After her husband’s
death in 1889, she left the South for a New York literary
career.
“The women here called her a squaw,” Richardson, 45, said
of Varina’s reception in Richmond. “They talked about how
dark her skin was, that she was not of a class that should have
married Jefferson Davis.”
“What it was was jealousy. This woman could hold her
own,” said Richardson, who proposed the internships to N.C.
Central and the museum.
There is some historical evidence Varina Davis was of
Native American heritage, he said.
The students also encountered the offbeat, including a letter dated Dec. 3, 1863, from Pope Pius IX. In a translation
from the Latin, the pontiff expresses “the spirit of Christian
charity and peace upon all those people of America and
deliver them from the evils so great with which they are
afflicted.”
“That is the beauty of it all, finding these interesting materials,” Roane said.
Rawls is hopeful he can build on the N.C. Central relationship with some of the nation’s more than 100 historically
Black colleges and universities.

Renovations turn tragedy into
history at Ford’s Theater
Site of President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, Ford’s Theater was closed for a significant renovation and restoration project since June 2007.
Patrons raised more than $50 million for the work and beyond. Below, an authentic wanted poster for Lincoln’s killers is in permanent archives at the
theater.
By Susan Eberman
O
n July 15 the museum at the Ford’s Theatre in
Washington, D. C. reopened to the public after being
closed two years for major renovations. This state of
the art attraction is sure to quickly become a “DC Must-See.”
Ford’s Theatre was the site of Lincoln’s
Assassination on April 14, 1865. Five days
after General Robert E. Lee’s surrender at
Appomattox Court House, the Lincolns
attended a performance of Our American
Cousin in this modern three story brick building. Well known actor John Wilkes Booth,
who was also a Confederate supporter, shot
Lincoln during the performance. Lincoln’s
mortally wounded body was carried out of
the theatre to the nearby home of William
Petersen, a tailor, who also had a rooming
house. It was here that the president died the
next morning.
20
Producer John Ford, Ford’s Theatre owner, planned to
reopen his theatre within a few months but public sentiment
prevented him from doing so. He sold the theatre to the federal government in 1866 and it was used as an office building.
In 1893 tragedy struck again when the third floor collapsed
and 22 government employees were killed.
The Petersen House remained in the family
until 1878 when it was purchased by newspaper publisher Louis Schade who used it as an
office and residence. Visitors showing up to
see the room where Lincoln died proved such
a distraction that he moved out in 1893 and
rented his residence to Osborn Oldroyd.
An avid Lincoln collector, Oldroyd created
a Lincoln museum and opened to the public.
Three years later, the federal government purchased Petersen House but allowed Oldroyd
