President’s Message
Fellow SCI Flint Chapter Members,
Many changes took place in Michigan this past year- more
than any year I can remember. These changes will affect
Michigan sportsmen far into the future. The license structure
has been completely revamped and a dollar of each base
license (hunting or fishing) will go into a fund controlled
by the newly formed Michigan Wildlife Council. This will
raise about $1.8 million annually and the Council will be
responsible for implementing a public relations and marketing
strategy to educate the non hunting and fishing community
about the benefits of being a Michigan sportsmen. Programs
such as Sportsmen Against Hunger and National Archery in
the Schools Program could be showcased to the general public.
A similar program was implemented in Colorado and the
general public now has a more positive opinion of hunting.
The Citizens Initiated Law will take effect in 2015, and
hopefully, we will be hunting wolves next fall. The anti hunter groups are threatening to litigate, as
they always do, but litigation will be extremely challenging and expensive for them. The odds are in
our favor this time- with both the process and the current attitude in Lansing. The most likely scenario
would have the State Attorney General, Bill Schuette, defending the Michigan State Constitution if a
lawsuit develops.
Congratulations to chapter member Dave Larsen, he has accepted a position on a 12-member bear
advisory council. This is a new board that will interact with the Natural Resources Commission and
the DNR. They will make recommendations to the NRC for future hunting regulations and policies
regarding Michigan bears. Dave can be reached at [email protected] if any chapter members
have any suggestions or concerns.
SCI’s Annual Convention is February 4-7, 2015. Every hunter should have this event on their
bucket list. It really is better than advertised. I’ve been to several of the national shows including
the Harrisburg Sportsman’s Show and nothing I’ve been to compares to SCI’s convention. Auctions,
Luncheons, Dinners, Shooting Events, Celebrities, the best outfitters in the world, the best taxidermy
work in the world, seminars by expert hunters, artwork, clothing, jewelry, firearms, archery
equipment- it’s all there and much more. Your wife or friend will enjoy it too, plus you’re in Las
Vegas. There is no place more fitting to celebrate our way of life. You never know who you’ll run
into at the convention either- several years ago, I bumped elbows with another hunter at an outfitter’s
booth. When our eyes met, I realized it was Wade Boggs. Wade recorded his hunt with the outfitter
and it was part of his television show. As this issue of our newsletter goes to press, I’m in British
Columbia hunting cats with the same outfitter.
Life is short, hunt hard, and pass it on,
Neal

2015 Fundraiser
Tickets are now available, bring your friends and support the future of our hunting heritage!
SCI Flint’s Annual Wild Game Dinner and
Fundraiser Banquet will be on Saturday March
14, 2015. The Board of Directors are hard at
work planning another great event while The
Hunt Donor Committee is busy assembling
another extraordinary group of outfitters and
donors. This year there will be several first time
donors joining us along with many returning
favorites.
Once more, The SCI Flint Regional Chapter
will host its Annual Outfitter Expo on the Friday
before our Annual Wild Game Dinner and
Fundraiser. Again this year, there will be a mini
auction at the Outfitters Expo. Stay tuned for
more details about this exciting return attraction.
Several of the outfitters will be present for both
events and attendees will be able to talk to them
and gain specific knowledge about various
donations, discuss hunting opportunities, book
trips for this year and next or just learn what they
have to offer.
The live auction on Saturday will include
opportunities for wing shooting, ranch hunting
exotics, a chance at the deer of a lifetime, adding
another North American species to your trophy
room, hunting in Africa and other international
locations, fishing trips and so much more.
and the gun raffle tables.
Dennis Gepfrey is developing a menu of wild
game. The hors d’oervres will feature venison
summer sausage and the main dishes will contain
several different wild game species. Dennis
modifies the menu from year to year for variety;
however, the wild game is always superb.
Hunters never tire of swapping tales of hunting
adventures. SCI Flint’s Annual Wild Game
Dinner and Fundraiser Banquet promises to be a
night that allows good friends to gather and enjoy
discussions of past hunts, plan for upcoming
hunts and dreams of that “hunt of a lifetime” that
is someday to come.
Join the fun and then gather round the table
to enjoy one of the best wild game dinners in
Michigan! Tickets are now available, bring your

“Hunting With Great Friends
Our unwelcomed goose camp guest
By Marc Somers
It’s not an obsession but I’ve always thought
it would be cool to someday say I’ve hunted all
thirteen Canadian Provinces (I’m currently at
seven) so when the opportunity to hunt Manitoba
and Saskatchewan with great friends occurred,
I jumped at the chance to check-off two more
territories.
I refer to my Manitoba trip as the “Goose
hunting with Polar Bears Hunt”. Good friend
Johnny Walker and I flew into a remote Hudson
Bay base camp near Churchill for some of the
greatest water fowling I’ve ever witnessed.
For three days we slept late (a Polar Bear was
walking though camp early each morning so the
outfitter wouldn’t allow us to venture out till after
first light) in our modern and comfortable cabins
6 F all 2014 | www.scif lint.com
Sea run Brook trout !!
is Bucket List Material”
and leisurely ate a late breakfast before
riding swamp buggies the our blinds.
I’ve never seen anything like this:
hundreds of thousands of geese arriving
from Quebec after a long fight over
Hudson Bay: Ross, Snow, Canadian, and
Blues in groups of 20 to 200 coming in
non-stop waves, we easily limited out
early every day. In the afternoon we’d
walk 100 yards from camp and fish hardfighting sea run Brook trout. What a
unique trip.
What a
unique trip.
The Saskatchewan trip didn’t have the
same amount of excitement as Manitoba
– until the very end, that is. Great
friends Mike Baxter and Mark Wendling
invited me on a Whitetail hunt near
Cold Lake so it was an offer I couldn’t
pass-up. The opportunity to harvest an
exceptional Whitetail is exciting but....
you have to pay your dues: the days are
long (ten hours in an unheated blind)
and cold (we averaged single digit temps
the entire trip) but there were constantly
deer nearby. I had a hard time judging
antlers on the big-bodied bucks so I
passed on several boarder-line shooters.
On the last day of my hunt I had to leave
early to catch a flight so I told the guide
to pick me up from the blind at 11 am
sharp. By 10:30 I was in the dreaded
acceptance stage of an unsuccessful
hunt: realizing you had a great time with
great friends but admitting a harvest
isn’t in the cards this time. I ate my
lunch and packed up the blind to wait
for the 11 am pick-up. At 10:50 I took
one last look around with the binocs
only to see a nice buck and doe 140
yards... aware – I didn’t even have time
to get nervous! I pulled up the .270 and
BANG! But when I looked through the
scope again the deer was still standing
and staring at me - dang it !! I racked
another shell but when I looked through
the scope the buck started listing right,
and then collapsed. I’d hit him with the
first shot…….with only seven minutes
to spare before my guide arrived. I felt
incredibly fortunate.
Getting closer to achieving my goal of
hunting all thirteen Provinces is a nice
thought but hunting with great friends is
bucket list material.

SCI Flint Delivers
Two SCIF Safari
Care Blue Bags to
RSA Orphanage
By Scott Chapman
With help from Anso Thormahlen and Mario
Tinkler of Thormahlen and Cochran Safaris, SCI
Flint Chapter members Dave and Jeanene Stoll
and Scott and Angela Chapman delivered two
SCIF Safari Care Blue Bags to an orphanage
in Malelane, South Africa. The Amazing
Grace Children’s Home is an orphanage for
underprivileged kids ranging from 0 months to 17
years, and was in desperate need for the donated
items to help with care of the children who live
there. Some of the resident orphans were victims
of human trafficking, and were too young to be
able to tell people were they came from when they
arrived.
Dave Stoll and Scott Chapman arrive at Orphanage with SCI Flint
Regional Chapter prepared SCIF Safari Care Blue Bags
The bags were prepared by Dennis Gepfrey,
SCI Flint Regional Board Member and Chapter
Humanitarian Services Chair. The contents
included bedding, blankets, food, toys, school
supplies and medical supplies that can be used by
the orphanage.

Scott with residents of the Amazing Grace Orphanage.
This was the fourth time that the
Chapman’s have taken part of the delivery
of SCI Flint prepared Safari Care Blue
Bags in Africa, and the Stoll’s quickly
agreed with their assumption that it is an
important part of any adventure taken in
areas of need.
The Safari Club International Foundation
Safari Care is a volunteer healthcare and
humanitarian outreach program serves
people in need in remote communities
around the globe.
In 1996, SCI members delivered mosquito
nets and other medical supplies to villagers
in remote areas of Namibia. This inaugural
step started Safari Care. SCI and SCI
Foundation, like so many organizations,
put forth enormous effort each year to help
improve the quality of life throughout the
world.
Since 2005, participants (affectionately
referred to as our “Blue Bag Brigade”) in
this program have reported taking 1,331
Blue Bags overseas. Shipping these bags
would cost hundreds of dollars apiece, and
filling each bag would cost anywhere from
$150 to $300. However, they are filled by
SCI chapters or individual members with
medical, educational, hygiene and other
relief supplies, clothing, and toys, which
are then taken to remote areas of the world
by hunters who have planned hunts in
these regions. The supplies are delivered
directly to villages, clinics, schools and
orphanages for villagers, doctors, teachers
and caregivers to utilize.
Jeanene Stoll and Angela Chapman with contents of Blue Bags and
residents of Orphanage.
The SCI Flint Regional Chapter began
sending Safari Care Blue Bags with chapter
members who wish to carry the bags and
deliver them while traveling abroad in
2007. Since that point in time, the chapter
has sent bags to Tanzania, South Africa,
Namibia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Mexico,
Ghana, and Mexico.
For more information on Safari Care or
to request a copy of our Guidelines for
Safari Care Missions (including suggested
items for Blue Bags), please contact the
SCI Foundation Humanitarian Services
Department at (520) 620-1220 or Dennis
Gepfrey at the SCI Flint Regional Chapter.
The Chapman’s and Stoll’s are grateful
to the Dennis Gepfrey and the SCI Flint
Regional Chapter for being able to deliver
the latest SCI Safari Care Blue Bags to the
folks at The Amazing Grace Orphanage in
Malelane, South Africa.

Musky with the
Medicine Man
My fishing
partner on this trip,
Mark Spiers, from
Pennsylvania, and I
had different goals.
His bucket list included
catching the elusive
40” Musky, but mine
was just to catch a
Musky. We chose to
fish with Captain Ed
Pascua of Medicine
Man Charters. He was
a donor at our fundraiser this year and I had been hearing about
great fishing trips by chapter members all summer.
Musky fishing reminds me of deer hunting- you’ve got to be
patient because they’re not easily fooled and it only takes 1 to be
successful. I eventually broke Mark’s 40” goal with a very heavy
21 pound, 41” long fish that Lake St. Clair is famous for. Mark
had a long distance release on his biggest fish of the day, a 40+
incher, and decided to come back to try again in early November.
He and another friend, Carlie Hinnenberger, had another good
day of fishing and Mark was able to land a 48”, 32 pound beauty10 F all 2014 | www.scif lint.com
his first true 40”
Musky. This was
the 31st Musky that
Mark had caught in
about 30 years of
fishing (mostly in
Pennsylvania) and
he finally crossed 1
off the bucket list.
Medicine Man is
a top notch fishing
experience on Lake
St. Clair. The vessel is a 31’ Tiara yacht and is equipped with
all the latest technology. It even has a specially designed and
locally built live well just for Musky. The 10” lures we used
were handmade in Marine City, carved out of cedar by local
artist Ziggy. They were individual pieces of art and looked more
like show pieces for a trophy room than lures we should put in
the water and troll for strikes. If you’re looking for a great local
fishing trip, contact Ed at www.medicinemancharters.com or see
him at the SCI Flint fundraiser in March. Ed also offers Walleye,
Bass, and other types of trips on Lake St. Clair.
Early Teal Season on Saginaw Bay
A
By Peter Filpansick and Zachary Goodheart
s summer winds down and the cool air moves in,
we all have one thing on our minds: when can I
go hunting? Unfortunately, we have to wait a few
more weeks until most seasons open. But this year
in Michigan, we were lucky enough to have an
Early Teal Season from September 1-7.
My wing shooting friends and I set out to try
hunting these small ducks on Saginaw Bay on
opening day. At a river mouth, we set up on the
edge of a cattail island directly in front of a mud
flat. Our decoy spread included mostly mallard
decoys, a few goose floaters, and two motion duck
decoys. We hunted morning and night, hammering
our calls to get the birds coming in.
The ducks were moving before the sun came up.
As we started seeing the groups set on our decoys,
we quickly realized that this teal season required a
keen eye for identifying the birds before they set.
We saw plenty of wood ducks and mallards, so we
chose to err on the side of caution and to not shoot
unless we made a positive identification of the teal.
By the end of the day we took our limit of 6 ducks
each, but it took longer than we expected because
we let most birds fly.
It had its challenges, but this early season helped
us get an early start on the hunting for the year. It
was also good practice for the regular waterfowl
seasons. This experimental early teal season is a
three-year program, so we’ll be out there on Labor
Day in 2015 and 2016. We hope to hear your shots
across the water.

YES YUKON!

YBGO Yukon Big Game Outfitters
served up all that they promised from
our wild game dinner and auction. The
scenery, accommodations, and guides are
all world class. The hunting conditions
were tough but, we succeeded in spite of
Mother Nature throwing all the curve balls
she had.
I set out
in early
September
on the moose
hunt that was
purchased last
spring after
upgrading to
a Stone Sheep
hunt. Five days
of climbing,
glassing
and riding horses produced zero game
sightings, heavy sleet, snow and cold
temperatures. On day six my guide Colby
and his wrangler Cole decided we were
going to hike a different mountain range to
see what it had to offer. After finishing off
a cold Mountain House oatmeal breakfast
with some fresh cowboy coffee, we set out
for an all day hike. Less than 500 yards
later we spotted a lone ram on the skyline
of the mountain we were set to climb. We
quickly ducked behind a pine tree and
glassed the ram, which looked real good,
to make sure he was one we wanted. He
was and lady luck
was on our side.
He decided to bed
down right there
in plain view for
us to set up for a
possible shot when
he stood up. My
range finder read
434 yards with the
angle compensator
reading 417. An
hour and half
passed by without
moving before the
10 ½ year old ram
stood up to stretch.
At that point I
aimed my trusty
300 Weatherby at
his front shoulders
and touched off a perfect shot dropping
him in his tracks.
He is a beautiful full curl ram with an
extremely large body and a gorgeous grey
and white coat. We celebrated our hunt,
caped the ram and headed to another camp
the next morning.
Two days of riding on a horse and
glassing different mountain ranges brought
us to a small
body of water
called Fire Lake
in search of a big
bull moose. Upon
arrival what we
spotted was 3 very
large bull caribou
on the opposite
side of the lake.
We quickly made
a decision to cross
the lake in a small
row boat and climb about 1,500
feet to get closer and possibly get
a shot at one of the three giants.
We made our move and within
two hours we were near the top of
the mountain in a light rain. Two
of the three caribou were in range
at about 180 yards. The third bull,
and the largest, was nowhere to
be found. As Colby and I glassed
in search of the third bull he
spotted us first from below and
began running away from us
bringing the other two bulls with
him. He
slowed to a trot at
about 375 yards and
I was able to anchor
him with a quartering
away shot through
the boiler room
putting him down.
Sometimes we pray
we are luckier than
good. This was one of
those moments. The
bull had bloody red
horns from velvet he
had shed earlier in the
day. He is a real high
end bull with lots
of mass, points and
symmetrical webbed
tops.
I was unable to spot a bull moose but,
as luck would have it, an opening in my
work schedule, and a cancellation moose
hunt provided me an opportunity to go
back after three weeks and search for a big
Alaska/Yukon moose. Upon my arrival I
met my new guide Jessie and his wrangler
was Cole from my first hunt. We flew to
a lake called Cook Lake in search of a
monster bull. After five days of hunting
in high winds, unusually cold weather
and some snow we had one small bull
sighting and very little rut activity. The
next morning while awaking in camp we
heard a loud bull grunt from what seemed
like a real old bull. After hunting all day,
climbing some small hills and glassing a
burn we decided to stay camped where we
were at. The next morning while we were
starting to eat breakfast, and before our
first cup of cowboy coffee was downed we
could hear what sounded like an animal
running in the lake. We ran out of the tent
and saw a nice Bull Moose running right
for our camp! I grabbed the trusty 300
Weatherby and let him keep running until
he reach a mere 15 yards from our boat
and tipped him over. We were hoping he
would run on shore but, unfortunately he
fell over in the water and made our clean
up a bit of a challenge. I spent the last two
days of my hunt prepping my cape for a
half body mount and in search of a Grizzly
bear without any success. 18 days of
climbing, glassing, and motoring around
several lakes produced three awesome
trophies.
A big shout out to the outfitter YBGO
for donating this moose hunt for bid at
our fundraiser. The game, the country and
the outfitter are all first class. For a big
game trophy hunt of a lifetime head to the
Yukon with YBGO.

Buck Pole 2015
By Dennis Gepfrey
Opening day has finally arrived ! After 2 months of
preparations and making my rounds to local businesses and
past sponsors, I was ready to go. Got some great items again
this year and want to thank everyone for their generosity and
continued support. Madden’s Lounge, Williams Gun Sight
and Outfitters, Larson’s Ace Hardware, Parky’s Taxidermy,
Johnny B’s taxidermy, Otisville Gun Barn, Chapman’s
Sports Center, Grab Bag Fishing and Tackle, Ed’s Archery,
Chris Paris Taxidermy, Mark Thomas Processing,
Hayward’s Processing and the S.C.I. Flint Chapter. This
could not happen without your help,Thank you all ! Our
first deer showed up at 11:08 am on Saturday morning,
which was unusual for opening day, especially when the
weather was excellent for hunting ! It was a nice 8 point
that weighed 121 lbs, not bad for a start. Then we
hung a 6 point and then we had a 12 point; this
deer was a monster ! He was shot 1 week ago by
John Talley with a crossbow, unfortunately I didn’t
include his trophy for the opening day event. I
did explain to him that this event was for opening
day only, but gave him a sweat shirt and hat for
bringing it down. We then had an 11 point brought
in which weighed 141 lbs, he was another monster.
The majority of deer this year were 8 points and
they all had nice racks on them, I would have
been proud to have taken anyone of them myself !
Congratulations to the successful hunters and to the
ones that didn’t get one opening day, good luck in
the next 2 weeks ! As I stated earlier we received
some great prizes; the top 3 prizes were winners
choice, which they got to pick depending on their
total scores. Our scoring system is quite simple;
you take the number of points and multiply it by
10, then you add that to the weight of the deer and
that is your total score. The top total score picks 1
st, then the 2 nd and on down. The 11 point with
a total score of 251 which was shot by Daniel
Phillips took the 50 cal. black power muzzle loader
rifle which was donated by the SCI Flint Chapter.
Then Michael Haney, with a really nice 8 point,
with a total score of 228 took the full shoulder
mount that was donated by Parky’s taxidermy in
16 Fall 2014 | www.scif lint.com
Indian River. The 3 rd
place prize was won by
Alan DeBuck with a 8
point, with a total score
of 227. Good job guys
! We didn’t have any
women bring in a deer
this year, which was very
disappointing because
I had a beautiful pink
camo 20 ga.shotgun
waiting for them ! So, we
raffled the gun off along
with a nice 270 rifle and
another full shoulder
mount. Awesome prizes
and some very happy
winners ! Everyone that
entered a deer received
a sweat shirt which was
donated by Madden’s
Lounge, which said
Madden’s Buck Pole
on it; very nice ! They also received a hat from
Williams Gun Sight and Outfitters, another tee
shirt and 50.00 gift certificate from Johnny B’s
Taxidermy. Not a bad
day at all ! During this
hunting season don’t
forget to donate to our
Sportsman Against
Hunger campaign
going on this year. Just
a 1 or 2 lb donation
helps ! Thank you
all; be safe and I will
see you next year at
Madden’s.

Kelsi Spurlin’s Wish Hunt 2014
By: Kelsi Spurlin
I was chosen from SCI to go on a Wish
Hunt. The owner Dan Yoder from World
Class Whitetails of Ohio invited me to
do my wish hunt there. On October 27,
2014, my dad, mom and I traveled from
Michigan to Ohio. When we finally
got to World Class Whitetails of Ohio
we met Ron from SCI. He showed us
where we were going to stay; it was
a really cool log cabin. I was excited
because I have never stayed in a real log
cabin before. The first day we relaxed
and met some really nice hunters. Ron
made breakfast for all the hunters that
were staying there. We had yummy
french toast and venison sausage. After
breakfast Ron took my dad, mom, me
and two other guys to see the deer. He
dropped us off at a really neat hunting
“
Finally we got
out of the blind
and looked at
my buck and it
was a 12 point
buck. I was so
excited!

”
blind. We watched the deer and took tons of
pictures. We saw a Piebald deer; it was white and
brown with a pink nose. It was a cool looking
buck. We also saw huge bucks; I was hoping one
of them was going to be mine. When Ron came
back to pick us up, we went to the main house
to eat lunch. We had sandwiches, chips, cookies
and pop. After lunch I got all my hunting stuff
on. Before we left Michigan I got a camouflage
outfit that Gander Mountain gave me. I felt like
a real hunter in my new clothes. I also had the
best gun ever that Zach Goodheart from SCI let
me borrow. I wish someday I will get a gun just
like it. It was loud, but comfortable and didn’t
hurt. Then we all got in the Polaris and drove
all over the hunting land. It was a blast riding
up and down the hills; it felt like a rollercoaster
ride. I never saw that many deer in my life, it
was awesome. While we were driving around
Ron was looking for my buck. He finally found
my buck right by a hunting blind. So Ron, me,
mom and dad tiptoed up to the hunting blind. I
got ready to shoot my big buck. I was not scared,
but Ron the guide was nervous for me to shoot.
I think he thought that I would miss or shoot it
in the gut. I didn’t miss; I shot him in the lungs.
Ron went to pick up Dan, the owner, so he
could see what I shot. I felt special because Dan
wanted to video me. Finally we got out of the
blind and looked at my buck and it was a 12 point
buck. I was so excited! They put my buck on the
back of Polaris and we drove back to the house.
Everyone was so proud of me. Ron cut my buck
up. He put the meat and cape in the freezer, so it
would be ready for when we left. That night Ron
took us out for dinner. I ate some of my favorite
foods steak, french fries, salad and of course pop.
We went back to the cabin and stayed there one
more night. Then next morning we woke up and
packed the car, and ate a pancake breakfast. It
was delicious. When it was time to leave we got
my meat out of the big freeze and put it in our
cooler. Then we said goodbye to everyone. I
wish we could have stayed longer, it was so much
fun. I kept the horns and the cape and we brought
it home. I will get it mounted with a smile. I
am going to hang it on the wall so I can see it
every day. I will always remember my first time
shooting a big buck. I had the time of my life.

Mayner Legacy Continues
According to the National Shooting Sports
Foundation the average age of a hunter in the
Midwest is 44, with the percentage of women
who hunt only being 8%. Malorie Mayner is
an exception to the statistic. This past August
her father Rodney Mayner, a member of
both Flint and Kenai Peninsula Safari Club
International Chapters, took the 13 year old
Malorie on a hunting trip of a lifetime.
Rodney purchased a hunt with Matsuri
Safaris out of South Africa at the Kenai
Peninsula fundraiser, and decided to have
Malorie tag along. In Rodney’s 2nd trip to
Africa he tagged a Kudu the first day with his
daughter Malorie sitting by his side. When
Malorie was asked how the 1st day went on a
scale of 110, she replied, “It was an 11”. Little
did she know, she was about to fill her trophy
room with animals even the best hunters in
the world didn’t have.
20 Fall 2014 | www.scif lint.com
Malorie has been hunting in youth hunts with her dad
ever since legal hunting age. Shes bagged a whitetail
every year. The Mayner family hunting heritage has
been passed down from Rodney’s Father and currently
has 8 men and 3 women that are active, avid hunters.
Malorie not only has 3 African animals mounted in the
trophy room, she has bragging rights over all 8 men;
except her Father who holds several records in the local
Flint Safari club chapter.
On the second day, Malorie bagged her first
international animal. Using her lucky bandana, authentic
African shooting sticks, and a 3006 provided by
Matsuri Safaris, she put a Zebra in the cross hairs and
only had to shoot once. Later in the week, Malorie hit
and injured her 2nd animal. With the help of the lead
dog, “Bella” tracking, she bagged a Wart Hog.
On one of the final days of the trip, Professional
Hunter Van Reenen and Trackers Philip and Simone had
such a good time, and were so impressed with Malorie
they let her shoot an Impala for free. Rodney highly
suggests Matsuri Safaris saying, “Van and His staff
were awesome. Their professionalism was great, and
hospitality was off the charts”.

Amazing Company. Amazing Trip.
Amazing Country!
By David Stoll
“Yes, everybody out! We will walk single
file up to the big tree, and sir, you and I
will step out to the left of the tree. I will
give you the yardage and which Impala to
shoot.”
This is when it hit me, “Oh my God we are hunting
in Africa and how did we get here?”
This dream adventure started one night at our friends
Scott and Angela Chapman’s bar. Jeanene made a
brief mention of her childhood dream to see and
photograph animals in Africa. This prompted Scott to
say, “Not only can we do a photo safari, but we can
do one better—we can hunt too! Why don’t you join
us on our next safari?”
From there the vision grew into reality. Several
months later, we had the pleasure of being introduced
to Erwin Kotze, a PH from Thormahlen & Cochran
Safaris. We felt an instant connection with him,
and booked our first Safari with Thormahlen and
Cochran.
As we made our way to the big tree, my first lesson
of African hunting was obvious—everything has
thorns!
We concluded our stalk by arriving at the tree
our Professional Hunter W.H. Knox targeted.
He stepped out from behind the tree, step-up the
shooting sticks, and whispered “165 yards. Take
the one on the right”.
22 Fall 2014 | www.scif lint.com
We both went without expectations, and full
intentions of making the most of our trip. Our
experience was better than we could have dreamed.
The beauty of the land, the beauty of its people and
the beauty of its animals was breathtaking.
Kruger National Park is a treasure. At one camp
there, our villa over-looked the river, where a herd of
Elephants enjoyed a leisurely lunch and playtime in
the water. We enjoyed a night tour of the park where
we were blessed by seeing a big male leopard. The
giraffes were magnificent against the African sunset.
Another highlight was an outstanding
grilled lamb dinner for Angela’s birthday,
the best meal we had during the hunting
portion of our trip.
The latter portion of our trip was to Cape
Town. How amazing to see such vastly
different areas! We took in sights such as
a boat tour to see the seals and a Penguin
colony at Chapman Bay; a cable car ride
to the top of Table Mountain where we
enjoyed a lunch with a magnificent view;
Cape Town Wine country touring; The
Cape of Good Hope, and so much more.
As the sun was setting on our first night
of hunting, with my heart pounding, I
squeezed the trigger, the rifle went off,
and our PH said “Fine shot Sir, he is
down.” With his excellent guidance, this
was the first of six fine trophy animals we
collected during our hunting trip in South
Africa.
Amazing company. Amazing trip.
Amazing country! We have the bug; Africa we will
see you in the future!
