RAINBOW NEWS RAINBOW NEWS Rainbow Animal Assisted Therapy, Inc Fall 2008 IT’S BACK TO SCHOOL TIME AND RAINBOW GEARS UP FOR ITS FALL SCHOOL PROGRAMS! WELCOME BACK TO ALL OF OUR SCHOOLS AND STUDENTS RETURNING FOR FALL SESSION 2008 RAINBOW’S CRISIS RESPONSE TEAM VISITS NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY TO PROVIDE THE COMMUNITY WITH ANIMAL ASSISTED THERAPY On April 23, 2008, Rainbow Animal Assisted Therapy’s Crisis Response Team, led by Rainbow member, Mary Ramsden, provided animal assisted activities to the Northern Illinois University community. In a letter to Rainbow, Elizabeth Garcia, Ph.D., of NIU, wrote, “Several members of their team...interacted with students, faculty, and staff outside academic buildings, and residence halls. At the end of the day, the team attended a “National Stress Out” event, a program that provides healthy activities for students to help manage their stress at the end of the semester. In my observations, the team provided students, faculty and staff an opportunity to interact with the dogs in a way that allowed them to experience a sense of relief, calmness, and safety.” She goes on to say, “We received positive feedback from the community and have received numerous requests to offer additional animal assisted activities in the future.” In fact, Rainbow has already been invited back and is grateful to have been given the opportunity to An NIU student is comforted by Sadie, a Rainbow Crisis Response Dog. demonstrate how effective our Crisis Response Team has proven to be. The Rainbow dog therapy teams “work on the children’s IEP goals by incorporating skills into their time together. The gross motor skills of walking, independent sitting, reaching and throwing perfectly align with our goals…” Mrs. VandeHey, Sp. Education, Gray Sanborn School, Palatine SHARE THE MAGIC—A RAINBOW VOLUNTEER’S STORY by Judy Bennett All of us who work with Rainbow believe that what we do is very special. We often say that it’s always great and sometimes magical. With this issue of the newsletter, we’re starting a new feature… an opportunity to share that magic. We’re asking you to send us your stories of that special time. We’ll publish these as well as some of the great feedback we get from the teachers, parents, and staff members that work with our teams. I’ll start by sharing one of my favorites. I was working at Solomon School with some special needs youngsters. We started a new session that included a 5 or 6 year-old named “Jonah” who was terrified of my Bichon, Zoe. After a good deal of screaming and much careful work, Jonah would touch the tip of a finger to Zoe. But as we walked away in the hallway, Jonah ran to the door and yelled “GO AWAY AND DON’T EVER COME BACK AGAIN!” The second session was also challenging but Jonah advanced to really petting Zoe with just a small bit of coaching. Still as we left, Jonah was at the door, yelling “GO AWAY AND DON’T EVER COME BACK AGAIN!” By the third session, Jonah was feeding Zoe. One of Jonah’s classmates admonished him with “You need to be nice to Zoe because we like her.” Jonah again ran to the door as we left, but this time he yelled “THANK YOU FOR COMING!” I glowed all day. To share your story, send an email to: Judy Bennett at [email protected]. We may not be able to publish all of the stories we get, but we’ll love hearing from you.
